Instinct is incredible. Animals don’t read the “what to expect when you’re expecting” books and they seem to be doing just fine. I think it’s amazing
Technically we are animals but it can be different from bird to bird, some can be great mothers and some can horrible mothers.
I mean 7/10 of her babies died so maybe they could use a book lol imagine if humans were allowed that sort of leeway with our kids lives...
I think Lurkey was extra careful with her babies, she was helping her baby hatch out....
She was so responsible of them and so calm.....
Here's what google says: When you mate a Blue Slate to a Blue Slate, there are 3 possible outcomes. Fifty percent should be Blue Slate, twenty-five percent should be Self Blue (aka Lavender) and 25% should be black. To get those ratios you have to produce lots of poults.
The Blue Slate poults will be a darker grayish blue. The Self Blue will be a visibly lighter color grayish blue and the Blacks will be black.
The reason for the 3 different colors is that the Blue Slate are heterozygous for the slate color gene (Dd).

Most blue poultry don’t breed “true”, meaning blue to blue can give you blue, black or splash offspring. I’m not super familiar with turkey genetics, but I would assume that may be the case.

"When breeding Blue to Blue, the results are turkeys of three different colors: Slate, Blue, and Black. When breeding Slate to Slate, the results are just Slates and Slates will breed true. When breeding the Blue to Black, both Blues and Blacks result with no Slates. When breeding the Black to Black, just Blacks result, which breed true." (from www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Turkeys/BRKSlate.html). So, while we've been calling them interchangeably "Slate", "Blue Slate", and "Slate Blue", it would seem that Lurkey and Slater are the "Blue" variety of the officially recognized "Slate Blue Turkey" heritage breed. If they weren't then they couldn't have chicks of several different colors.
Lurkey is amazingly calm when you're near her eggs. I have at least 23 scars all over from hatching mine! That's one special girl right there. I must try raising a Slate!

I was raised on a farm and so were my kids. We all learned at a very young age, why you need to put the bull in with the cows. And you see mating all around you, chickens and ducks, barn cats, sheep etc etc. It’s just normal. No big deal.

The baby turkeys are beautiful. I am happy they get to see the world for the first time. Its emotional seeing a new creature see the world.

It's crazy how all of your boys look almost identical to each other! They're all getting so big. What an amazing experience to have that chick hatch in your hand!

I'm 13 and I have 6 duck eggs due to hatch arould the 26th. I also hatched 3 chicks last year, but they were killed by a coyote.

So rewarding to have chicks. I had a batch but it was too cold and the mom abandoned them. Only one that hatched got cold and I saved it for 3 days but then it died from a heating error due to me. I’m gonna hatch some more in the June!wish me luck lol

@@nobletarabas1 I don't like the interference, the man handling, but know that without people like this showing how life is and how life happens then 90% of the population just see a frozen piece of meat in the supermarket called Turkey and their is no connection - with connection comes empathy and from empathy comes as we are seeing changes to farmed animal cruelty. Not fast enough for my liking. This is not disgusting as you write its at times unnecessary and may well have led to the death of some... but the life bursting from a shell is truly amazing.

Joleen you Have to let them make their own way out. Theirs veins attached to the egg and an umbilical cord. If you pull the pieces of shell off, you risk tearing a vein and the chic bleeding to death

I raised bb bronze turkeys as pets. When the hen wouldn't set anymore I would put the remaining eggs in the incubator. One poult that hatched was having problems. I put him in a broader box. He was really wobbly but I continued to make sure he eat and was warm. He grew huge. I called him wobbly. He followed me around like a dog. He would strut back and forth in front of me to keep everything else away from me. If I were out in the yard and he heard me he would gobble. I had him for several years. He was a wonderful boy.
Nature makes me so happy and if we didn’t have nature then half of my life wouldn’t be where I am now 🥺 it’s very very stunning

Also I got to scratch some little chick heads at the feed store yesterday, a breed they had that I found Super Friendly it was so healing to love on those babies. I wanted to bring them all home but I'm in an apartment lol

Hey guys not sure if you'll see my comment, but thought it was worth the try. My boyfriend and I love your videos and you really inspired us to get on the road towards a hobby farm. We recently purchased top hat polish hatching eggs from Murray McMurray and tried our first shot at incubation. It was going really well in the beginning, but only one chick ended up hatching, and it had lots of problems. The humidity must've not been good enough because the chick stated hatching and then was almost glued shut into the egg and couldn't move to hatch the rest of the way. With the help of your videos and other online resources we were able to successfully help the chick hatch. Then when he came out we thought it was going to be okay, but ended up having curly toes. I also researched this and we made "chick boots" for him to correct his toes so he could walk. Unfortunately, I think we may have done it too late because he hadn't been able to eat and drink much for a day or two because he really couldn't move around. I though fixing his feet would save him and allow him to eat and drink. However, this morning he was extremely weak. He couldn't move at all and I had to keep his head up for him. He was barely alive at that point but saw him opening up his mouth so I used a syringe to give him water. He was able to get a few drops down. I also mixed his food with some water and he was able to get a little piece down. Unfortunately, after that he had passed away. I'm devastated because he was the only chick that hatched and we had done so much to try to get it to live. I'm writing this comment because I really need the motivation to keep trying with this hobby that I've recently realized that I love. I don't want to give up, but it was hard seeing him pass. Any advice for next time if we choose to try incubation again? Or may just some encouraging words would be a lot. You guys are a huge inspiration to us, and we have seen nearly every single one of your videos. We love seeing your family and animals grow, and it's amazing to feel apart of your journey! So proud of how far you guys have come, and we will continue to support you guys!

Agree I only hatched two out of like 7? And the where eaten by cruel racoons so gotta try again this year!
Hobbies with animals have a steep learning curve. There's joy in success and sorrow in failures, but the most important thing is to learn from the bad so you know how to handle similar challenges going forward. But it's also important to keep in mind that it's not always something you did or didn't do. Deaths can happen that are out of our control and it's important to remember that we can't control nature, only eliminate variables. It still hurts, I know it does, but you have to press on.
I wish you the best with your future hobby farm endeavors. It's always sad seeing a creature pass, but you can't let that stop you from doing something you love.
I hope my words are of some comfort. And if I may, have a virtual hug too.
Please try again. I grew up in the farming country of NE Ohio. We worked hard with the livestock.
Hard weather is coming; rule of law is badly damaged. Federal->state->local May go beyond crazy. You just gotta learn how to produce your own food to survive.

Lurky is SUCH A GOOD MOM~ So very gentle compared to some new Moms who literally butt their babies away from them and refused to let them eat or take care of them!! Oh really you can tell that Lurky is a gentle & patient Mother!!! I really love the color of Lurky❣️❣️❣️❣️
It was really unfortunate that the first baby died from exposure/being cold before it even had a chance to live in another one was killed by his dad. You just don’t know about Father’s, if they’re going to be good or not kind a like people!! This song that was sung while Lurky was walking out in the grass with her babies was very sweet and appropriate oh! I really like your videos and enjoy your family. It was honest what your son said when you asked him what did the baby jerky look like and he said “a chicken!”😊♥️ because in truth a child would not really be able to discern the difference especially as young as your child is. They might eventually be able to tell if you begin taking down the difference but that would be challenging. I thought he gave a great answer LOL. Until next time.
By the way, Between the ages of one and 10 we always said we lived in the White House😊❣️❣️ in truth, we were living on a big farm with a Victorian two-story house that was quite large and it was on the hill and we didn’t know anything about the presidents house at that point in our lives but it sounded good so that’s why we told everybody we left LOL!!

Id love lavender orpington eggs! I live on a small homestead in southern MO and I have been raising chickens for a long time but have never had lavenders! I have always enjoyed watching the incubating process!
My son in law and I have Lavender Orpingtons and they are a huge disappointment! The roosters don't take care of the girls and the girls are very flighty like Leghorns. Never again. Maybe the roosters will make good stew though as they aren't good for much else.

These boys will grow up and truly have a grasp and understanding for responsibly, and I love that most parents, just put there kids in front of TV, I myself am guilty of this sometimes, but if I had the resources and way my child would grown up this way too
Where I live there are quite a few houses for sale that are 60k or below. Lots only need minor repairs (paint, new carpet in 1 or 2 rooms, etc.) We rent for 450 right now but the house we are looking at, our mortgage should be about 300-350/month. That's with about an acre. Some have 3+ acres(just hard to get anyone on the phone to see the houses. Lol) Just have to deal with the headache of looking and looking and looking for the right one. Then headache of realtors 😂

Turkeys are such loving and smart beings. They make wonderful pets. Many are kept inside the house at night and hang out with the dogs. Then during the day they're allowed to roam in fenced in areas that are covered to keep birds of prey from killing them. They can even be litter box trained so no accidents inside the house. Rescue a turkey bound for the slaughter house and you'll have a loyal and forever grateful new best friend.

Had goosebumps...that's creation right there. We had chickens growing up and I always felt deeply hurt whenever one of them died. It broke my heart seeing the first one dying.
I agree, I've raised plenty of foul on my farm previously and to prevent them from dying from cold I would have a heat lamp on them or at least next to the nest. If he doesn't have electric ran to The building he could at least install a solar heat lamp and have alot less death.

My 6 yr old granddaughter and I watch your channel often. Em is fascinated with eggs and loves to watch hatching videos. We tried hatching eggs with a cheap incubator this Spring, but none of the eggs survived, so I bought 4 day old Silkies. It looks like at least 2 are hens. Em is very gentle with the chickens. She loves interacting with them, petting and singing to them. I would love to have some Orpington eggs for the Silkie hens to hatch out early next Spring. Em would love that! She said she would want to cuddle them. Thanks!
Turkey chicks are so adorable! Great job Lurkey. I have pet budgies. They are great moms. I enjoy watching my hen taking care of the before they hatch. My name is Jacqueline I’m twelve years old and I’m quarantining with my grandmother, we just built a large chicken coop and we have a incubator. We would love to have some Lavender Orpington eggs. Me too. I am going to try to buy some fertile eggs, and put them under a hen. We have 2 roosters, but they are worthless. They are 3, and NO fertilized eggs, despite frequent breedings! Worthless I tell you.

"Slate: (Slate, Blue Slate and Splash): is black based with a single dominant slate gene. (Genotype: BBDd), their phenotype is slate or ashy blue with specks of black 'spackles' scattered over the feathers. Blue: (Blue, Self Blue and Lavender): is black based but has two dominant slate genes." if they work anything like pigeon colour genetics that means with 2 blue slate parents you can get a variety of gene combinations. Babies with a single slate gene, double slate gene or no slate gene. So my guess is the dark babies have not inherited the slate gene, while the pale baby either has a sinlge (and is a blue slate) or inherited 2 copies of the slate gene and is a self Blue :)

There are a lot of resources online esp regarding pigeon colour genetics as they are a lot and very actively studied. That plus 7 years of breeding colour pigeons with multiple recessive genes :)
