    I had a very good hatch rate this time; 9 chicks hatched out of 12 eggs. I did nothing different as far as procedure from the last totally unsuccessful attempt. I did find a way to perform a factory type reset on the incubator, so that may have been my problem in the past. Thank you for continuing with all the insightful and helpful videos

      I am so glad this hatch was better than your previous. We too haven't had great success this year. We have another batch due in the next week but so far we have 7 chicks from two previous hatches. That is good to know, perhaps its time I reset mine also. Thanks for the tip. Glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂

    What a great, interesting, captivating, video. We just bought our 5-acre retirement home and chickens will be the first animal; I will want to raise them for meat, for eggs, and for hatching for more meat. Your very informative video gave me a lot of things to think about and to watch for as we start our chickens. I am going to peruse your list of videos next to see what else you might be sharing that will help us with things like, pigs, ducks, geese, bees, rabbits, etc. I tend to think I'm a pretty good gardener but every move means new soil and new conditions so I'll look for those videos as well, as we get started.
    There are lots of videos on all these topics on TH-cam but what I loved most about this one was the positive, confident, presentation and I know I'll be watching many more. Thank you from us both.

    I had the exact same incubator & one hatchling out of 9. I held the +/- down for 3 seconds and also did a factory reset. I find the temperature fluctuates a lot with this type of incubator.

      Yes incubators can be a common factor. We never had too many issues with our incubator over a few years. That being said I knew how it worked so I made adjustments, such as increased the temp, wrapped it in a towel and had better success with it. Sorry your having issues. We upgraded to a new incubator that holds more eggs.

    Hi Kendra. You said a failure could happen because the humidity was too low on day 21 but you didn't mention what the successful humidity range should be. What is too dry? What is too much humidity so they don't drown? I'm just learning and hearing a lot of conflicting information. The dry method for instance is being reported to be more successful hatch rates however shrink wrapping danger makes sense to me. Please help. Thanks.

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, I'm sorry. Yes a good % for humidity for the remaining 3 days of incubation and hatch day should be around 65-70% humidity. I have never tried the fry method so I can't speak for that method. I haven't experienced too much of having too high humidity but I have experienced shrink wrapped, and have helped some along with there hatch. I think if you stick to the 70% you should be fine. Keep an eye on the eggs and if they have peeped through usually within 5-8 hours they should hatch out if not and you see there beaks slowing down with breathing and less chirping you may need to help them along. A lot of the time the shrink wrap happens when you open the incubator lid. It's important not to open it until they are all hatched. Hope this helps.

      @thedeadgypsy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I do dry hatching and keep it about 35-40% during lockdown and hatching with no shrink wrapping problems. People make low humidity a far bigger problem than it is.

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AshGreen359 we have broody hens too. Some times they do a great job and sometimes it's flop. It really depends on if the hen is new at it, it takes practice for her. A good broody hen that's been successful before and turns out to be a good momma, is the best hen to use. She usually never fails. Unfortunately they need to learn to hatch them out, you may loose a few batches of chicks before she gets it right.

      Buy a separate thermometer/hygrometer with wire leads that you can run into your incubator. Not all incubators give good temp/humidity readings on the unit, especially cheaper “no name” brands.

    • @maishair
      @maishair 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Monitor your incubator readings with a good hygrometer and calibrate it if needed...
      Temperature is usually the issue in the first 18 days and humidity in the last 3

  • @loriburton4416
    @loriburton4416 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If the humidity temp is off, why wouldnt this cause a failure in all eggs, instead of some?

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could be many reasons. Some eggs have softer shells then others. Like a Maran egg, the darker the egg the tougher the shell. You may have certain areas in your incubator that perform better than others, temperature/humidity pockets etc... all play a roll in a successful hatch.

    • @PloughmansBackyard
      @PloughmansBackyard  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not sure if you have seen the manual. I have never left the incubator at one temp the whole time so i am not 100% sure how that would affect the eggs. I have adjusted the temps to keep the internal temperatures where they needed to be. The idea of changing the temps are to mimic the brooder mother as she does get on and off her eggs from time to time and moves them around to keep them a certain temps for different stages of development. Here is a link to the manual for this incubator on our merch store. You can check out the proper temperatures for the specific days. I hope this helps. ploughmansbackyard.com/en-cad/products/amazon-16-egg-incubator-instructions

      Its possible. Have you tried cracking your eggs and seeing if they are fertile? Have you also tried after trying to hatch them to see if there was any development in the eggs after the incubation period?
