A look at the Gerber MP600 multitool. This was military issue for a long time, however this is a civilian version of the multiplier. It uses a sliding one hand opening for the pliers. There is some wiggle in the pliers and the tools do not lock up perfect, but it is a tough tool and built to last. It is not pretty at all, and reminds me of the ak47. Tough, and built to last.

You did an excellent job of explaining exactly how this tool works - very educational. Each person has to decide what features they are looking for, and make their own choice. The Gerber Diesel is kind of interesting too. Thanks for sharing with us, brother!

I've had the non-military issue version of these since about 1993 and love em. I actually got them from saving Marlboro UPC in a program they used to run. The older these get the better they get n i beat the crap out of them almost daily. Push, pry, prod, beat on em with hammers n i cant break or even bend em. Leatherman suck. These are the best tool by far n the sliding pliers become the best feature after they wear in. U can just hold them by the buttons n let the handles drop down, not like the leatherman handles that end up folding backwards without opening the pliers.

I've had my Gerber MP600 since 2010 and I always reach for it as my first tool for the job because I always carry it with me. Recently I have purchased my first Leatherman (sidekick) for the sake of variety and because my Gerber MP600 has seen many miles and it may be time to retire the tool.
I really like the Leatherman because it's new to me but I have never doubted my Gerber MP600's toughness and capability for one moment. I suppose if I were to criticize the MP600 it would be that the blade isn't very sharp, however that could be my own unique case because it's been properly used and I haven't sharpened in quite some time.
I may return the Leatherman Sidekick and upgrade to the Charge with has a boat load of tools (gonna stick with Leatherman, again just for the sake of variety).

I have had the Gerber Diesel for 3 years now, and all I can say is...win. I know most people these days hate on Gerber, and I can't blame them. I had a Gerber Paraframe 2 that I was NOT impressed with even for a low cost Walmart knife. However, this is not the case with the Diesel. I have put this tool through some very hard use around the house and working outdoors while landscaping. It has always performed above expectations even if it is a little counter-intuitive to open at first. Give it a chance, and it will help restore some faith in a once great company.

Leatherman is overrated...my pliers failed on the very first use! Sent it back for the warranty, and they sent a refurbished beat up piece of crap...not to mention a tattered case! Like I said first use meaning it was brand new $70 purchase, and they sent my someone old used garbage! I'll take a gerber over a leatherman any day now, you don't always get what you pay for!

My take on Gerber multitools, and the leatherman rivalry: I initially gathered that leathermans were just better, tougher tools. Better quality control probably means more good leathermans. BUT.
    1. I did digging around on reviews and , there are people who swear by one and at the other. And they say the same things about the other brand. The one they liked served them well, the other failed on them.
    2. I KNEW when I picked up my mp600 that I could break it , and what types of things would break it. I know what to expect from my tools, and my mp600 has served me well. Within reason, it's been rugged.
    3. Given my first point, that's just my mileage.

Great review bro. I carried one very simular for well over fifteen years until I lost it a few months ago. I used I at work and home and in the woods. It never let me down and I have no complaints with it. I just seen some at the local army surplus and plan on going back and getting a pair when I get paid. The parts may be imported from other countries but it's one heck of a tool. Thanks for the great review. Atb. Robert

I just bought this tool like half an hour ago and I love this thing!!! It's super sturdy and the military uses them and swears by them. I don't care what anyone else says cuz they're just a bunch of morons anyway!!! I don't even think some people know what to do with a multi-tool anyway!! But this tool rocks!!! You can tell just by holding it, that it's made for tough jobs. I have no complaints about this tool. It does what it's supposed to and I am happy I bought it. Highly recommend it instead of overpriced Leatherman's and their proprietary shit bits!!! The Centerdrive is my next Gerber Multitool!!

two years ago i found a normal one without the locks on the inside tools, it is a silver one, i found it in an old boot along side the road, it didn't have a sheath, i was walking the tracks about a month later and found a craftsman sheath so i took off the craftsman tag and started using it. today i was again walking down by the local courthouse and someone in their stupidity must have forgotten to leave their one of these (mp-600) at home because the one i found was laying in the bush's half covered with snow now the snow has been melting for a few days now so i know it has been there at least a month but this one had the sheath with it so now i got the first one i carry everywhere and the new one i am going to put on my pack the sheath has the plastic strip to add to the moly webbing the strap on the back is as long as the sheath but has the seperations for stringing it to the pack beautiful. this is exactly like the first one i found except for the knife blade, the first one is a drop point and as i said no locks
. i think i did find the military version because the wire cutter jaws are removable by allen wrench, not like this one is

I personally prefer the Gerber multi tools over the Leatherman with the exception of the scissors they make. I prefer the Gerber over the Leatherman because of the sliding head. When you pull out the Leatherman one and you go to put a lot of force on to whatever it is that you're doing, you're meat seeps into the tool compartment! Which makes it damn near impossible to get a comfortable grip on the tool when you're gripping on to it and applying a lot of force! My only gripe with the Gerber multi-tool is that you cannot purchase extra fold out tool accessories.

This was my first multitool; I received as a gift the original matte (silver) stainless back in the mid-'90s and EDC'd it for a few years. Then I received, also as a gift, the original Victorinox Swisstool. Still later I received a SOG military issue multitool, again as a gift. I currently have and occasionally use a black oxide MP600 with the carbide inserts. That's a great feature IMO. I currently have or have had others too, including the Schrade/Vicegrip tool.
Gotta say though; I still carry and use the Swisstool more than any other. It wins hands down in terms of durability and usefulness of its tool compliment. If it had carbide inserts it would be almost perfect.

Another thing also, this tool is so awesome, that you can put a bit extender on the 3D Phillips and this way, you can use ANY bit. I have a bit extender from a cheap multi-tool that came with a bit adapter and the Leatherman bit adapter works on this too! Now my Gerber is a Kick ass universal tool!!! Why spend well over a hundred dollars when you can own this tool and a bit extender and be able to use any bit to take apart and fix anything and everything?!?

  • @riddnic
    @riddnic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The AR of Multitools definitely not an AK(leatherman)... A hell of a lot more reliable/quality than an old leatherman... incredible hidden features(remove pliers)... I just hate the plastic clips. You have to prepare to use anything but the pliers(definitely a military tool) improved in newer models... Not as practical for everyday street use as a leatherman or swiss army knife. Speed is its weakness. Quality is its strength!

Still have a 600 model (don't know the exact one) that I bought . . . can't remember for certain; somewhere between '96 and '98 (nearly 20 years). I sometimes forget I still have it; never used it much. Found it again in my toolbox; still works (even found the scissors; didn't know they had them). Maybe not as good as a full-sized Leatherman, but not bad for the price.

You should mention that once the pliers grip onto anything, including something as thin as a sheet of paper, they don't wobble anymore and are in fact quite solid. The tolerances for the tool are quite workable, and the handle never bothered me when cutting things. I've only had an issue with the plastic on the lock popping off, but warranty fixed that and it never happened again. I carry a wave now because it's expensive(can't afford another now), has most of the tools I need, and one handed opening knife was quite nice. I still wish I had an MP600 though, thinking about getting another one, or a MP400.

My brother gave me his military issued Multi tool once he returned from Iraq. So why is the one-handed operation a bad thing? I use this multi-tool in the race car while I'm racing to fix broken or malfunctioning parts all while my left hand is on steering wheel. I wouldn't be able to open a regular multi-tool while I'm still racing. The only reason I can do that is because it's one handed operating system. Rip it off my dash, slide it open, fix what ever it is, slide it back closed, put it back on the dash holder and never even lose a position. My brother said he'd use it with his left hand while operating his M4 with his right hand. Literally a life saver. If he had to stop and put his rifle down to use it he might not be alive today. He can fix whatever hes fixing all while keeping the targets heads down by throwing cover fire. If He put his gun down and stop shooting he'd be a open Target to shoot! I'd like to see Leatherman do that.

Nice review on the Gerber. I've carried the same Gerber 600 for over 20 yrs, so I know they hold up. I also have an original Leatherman and it has loosened up over the years. Since I use the pliers most of the time, I prefer the Gerber. BTW, Nutnfancy is an officer (Lt. Col, I think) so he probably has a different use than the average person ( and more money). I ride a motor cycle daily and the Gerber pliers are the most used for me and it has gotten me out of a lot of binds. I really like the AK 47 of multi-tools title, too.

I think he ment, m600 has loose tolerances and very rigid, workhorse not show horse, while the leatherman wave or charge can be easily relatable to the AR-15, tight tolerances and very precise, definitely a on the show horse side of things, while still being able to do everything the gerber can, just looks better doing it lol i own both and plenty of versions of the gerber m600 (blackoxide needle nose with and without carbide cutters and a blackoxide blunt nose which are freakn beastly) and plenty of leathermans, kind of an MT nut, theyre all good for something. Makes sense the m600 are army issue by the way, open design and loose tolerance makes it a good fit for the sandy environment of the desert.
