When I was in the Canadian Army reserves in 2001, my Gerber was my best friend in the field. When I released in 2008, I bought a 2nd, and they've been my EDC ever since.
Very cool tool ... I am still looking for a good quality but not so expensive multitool ... btw I just saw this on Amazon for $60,72
I will tell you that this is a bullet proof multi tool. I had one in afghanistan although it wasnt this exact one. absolutely love it! I recently bought this one for private use.
Best review of this tool on youtube. Great stuff
I got one of the old military issue ones from the mid 1990s and it still works great.
I got one of these in Asscrackistan- but I broke the pliers....Been thinking about pulling the trigger on another one.
Great review and a quality tool. One thing I'd like to point out however. In light use, this is a non-issue, but with heavy use of the pliers, such as when you are really squeezing down on something, don't let the jaws slip off. The handles come all the way together on Gerber, as opposed to staying slightly open in a V shape like most other tools. If you slip under force, you can get a NASTY and painful pinch of the flesh in your palm. There's a reason regular pliers have those curved handles.
Mine must be an older model. I actually found mine at roadside.
I have a MUT. I love the hammer end that can be used in conjunction with the intergrated punch, but I wish it had a front sight tool (like the Gerber) and another punch (for the Glock) in place of the saw (who needs a saw)? Too bad we can't have the best of both.
I think that with all the big names in this market (Leatherman, SOG, Victorinox, Gerber), you're pretty much safe choosing between them for a good MT. Just comes down to taste, brand bias and opinion after that. Folding pliers, saw, carbon scraper, titanium, spring loaded, portable bit sets, etc.; there's nothing new under the sun. Out of the 4 mentioned though, Gerber surprisingly looks to have the most edgy lineup in design. I would not have initially thought that. Listening, Leatherman??
If you buy EVERYTHING Sootch reviews then you are either A) independently wealthy or B) Broke (like me). LOL
Great video and review. Quick question, how well does that carbon scraper work at getting the carbon out of the bolt carrier at the bottom of the hole where the bolt goes in? I see the tip is angled, but I didn't see you show it in use. That's the hardest place to remove carbon on these things and it builds up if not removed. Thanks again for all the great videos and keep up the great work.
Gerber MP600 lack the scissor ,so I sold it off. I need scissor during my fishing expedition.
the Gerber 600 Pro scout is the best.
won't the replaceable cutter, cut line?
Looks like a great tool I saw in another review where the wire cutters could be rotated where they are a triangle shape to 2 more new edges great review as all ways!
Nice multitool. I have the Leatherman Surge in black oxide. I think one is about as good as the other. The Leatherman allows you to change bits where the Gerber has fixed bits. I like to be able to change bits but they changeable bits do get lost now and then. I'll probably pick up one of these Gerbers just to give it a try. Thanks for the video.
The replaceable cutters can be used in all 3 positions so if you damage one side you still have 2 sides left
9:05 I enjoyed the blooper reel.
In my opinion, the Leatherman OHT is superior over all the Gerber multi pliers being that in addition to the out-the-front pliers with replaceable cutters, all the tools are accessible on the outside with one-hand opening whereas with Gerber you have to use both hands to open the handles and access the tools on the inside.
Yeah but u can't run over the OHT with a military truck or drop it from descending off a cliff and the slide mechanism still work.....the gerber600 can
I ordered this yesterday after watching your review. Been looking at them for a little while, but this put it over the edge. Can not wait to get it! Thanks!
I wish Gerber would re-release the normal "civilian" MP600 with all these new upgrades and add other tools like a saw or new 3 sided file in place of the front sight tool or carbon scraper. That Phillips driver and knife are just too good an improvement to leave on one tool. What would be even better would be a replaceable bit driver, like on the MP1. Come on Gerber free ideas, make it happen!.
BTW. Is the carbon scraper made of bronze or metal other than steel like on the MUT? Could you also use it as an awl? looks pointier than the small screwdriver.
Sootch, I just want you to know that your vids are some of the best. Very rarely do people actually shot them using the tool in their review like you do. And for that, I thank you.
Dude, I'm an active duty soldier and I love the MP600!
It's a good thing those carbide cutters are replaceable. It looks like you damaged them on that wire you cut. Other than being easily damaged like the Leatherman I own. I'm interested in one.
Looks like it's built like a tank. Excellent review as always!! ;-)
I have both and I have to say MUT.Particularly if you have an AR-15, the MUT is better thought out with tools for your gun maintainance. The biggest difference however is the ability to get to the tools ESPECIALLY the knife blade. On the Gerber you must deploy the pliers to access any of the tools. On the MUT you can deploy the knife or saw one handed from the outside of the closed tool. The Gerber needs two hands to deploy the knife. Personally, I need a knife much more often than pliers.
Watch eBay. I just bought this a.m. "Buy it now" $49.99 with free shipping. New in original packaging. Score! Why is it I buy everything Sootch00 reviews. Lol
Want to test an amazing multi tool look at victorinox (swiss army). 12 tools plus a 9" ruler that's on the flat side. All the tools are accessible without opening. The steel is MUCH more durable. I've been carrying/using one now for 3 years and its still in great shape. In comparison I rounded off the screw driver of my Gerber in 2 months. Now its in my range bag as a "just in case" tool.
Gerber is junk. I've been through an assortment of multi tools and find Gerber to be the worst. The metal is too soft which is evident in the damage caused to the one in the video simple by using the screw driver and the cutting a paper clip. The design isn't that great, you need to open it to extract any tools. The blade is facing the wrong way so you can never push it on a flat surface and you'll surely bust your knuckles. Its range of tools is severely limited. Even the ruler is useless. cont
We get these issued to us and I can't stand it. I'm against Gerber in general because the steel they use is usually inferior to competitors, but I'm specifically against this model because the tools are on the inside of the handles, which makes them very inconvenient to get to.
Of course, that's just my personal preference. I know people in my unit that love this model, so it really just comes down to personal preference and what you personally like in a tool like this.
Good review though!
Your pivot is different than mine. You have two extra tools also. I have two of the Army issue ones. They are alright.
The worst part about the Gerber is that the handles come together when in use, and if you slip off what you are grabbing, the handles come together and take a chunk of meat out of the palm of your hand, and I can tell you that hurts like a &@$3€¥}¥!!!!
I have been issued this 4 times now. 3 are broken and 1 is brandnew and i have no plans of using it again. I did get issued a "Leatherman Change" and still works great and will never go back to Gerber. But thats just me.
I can't seem to stray far from leatherman wish my blast was spring loaded but what would you say is the best alternative to them like sog models or gerber or another brand I never heard of
I pretty much hate serrated blades. The pretty much ruin the tool by doing the half serrations. Leatherman does that on some of there tools also.
Only thing I don't like about the Gerbers are that the handles can pinch the palm of your hand if whatever you're wrenching on suddenly gives or slips.
CRAP music intro. Get rid of it. Really bad. Good multi tool review.
I have personally seen several of these tools fail in use but we were issued a different version of the MP600, so they might have changed the quality.
Leatherman wave all the way!
I got one for deployment. They are crap. The pliers will break pretty quickly and the blades have a tendency to snap off.
Can the carbide cutter inserts be rotated 1/3 turn and get 3 change of cutting edge? Good review. I want one if these now.
gerber stepping it up, nice to see, I used to used gerber but switched to leatherman when gerber quality sank some years ago. I do think the MUT wins with its saw and cleaning rod adapters, brass scraper.
just ordered the snap-on one, how durable are these?
Do you know if the phillips head screwdriver will accept the Gerber Driver Kit?
This is a great tool, but I prefer the Leatherman MUT - albeit at a higher cost.
Genere 600 ST VR Leatheman E.O.T. ? Chi vincerebbe ?
do they make one with a scissors? I have to have scissors.
OFF TOPIC: Israeli combat dressings can expire? How so? anyone?
"Gawd bless Amurica"
I can't find this tool anywhere in Winnipeg Canada!! I got the MP600 but I want to buy that model!!
I've been using Gerber multipliers since around '92/'93 or so; the original pair (the ones that did NOT have the locking blades) I bought were lost somewhere along the line, and I have a pair of MP600s now. Excellent tool.
Excellent review..especially when demonstrating utilities of the Gerber!
Thanks for another quality review Sootch! I just bought the normal standard issue MP600. So which multi-tool do you actually carry on a regular basis?
I have the older MP600, which I keep with me everywhere I go. Need to replace my carbide cutters. Good video.
I was issued two of them and gave 'em both away
Will the sheath fit on the LC-1 utility belt?
Im thinking of getting one idk yet though. Im deciding between this and the gerber suspension which would you prefer?
thank you for the great info. I found one of these on the ground at work a while back and wasn't sure what all the tools were designed to do, now i have more good reasoning for getting some more pew pews.. thanks again, y'all have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving
Hehehehe Multi-plier. ZING !!! Waka waka !!!
lol I have this tool..I am a wire sculpture artist ..it is one of my favorite tools ...I use this tool almost every day
I have a very nice leather case with a snap closure and has a loop for wearing on your belt I will send to you if you message me a place to send it ..as I do not use the case
I couldn't help but notice you didn't have a Boron bolt system where you don't need to scrape off the carbon. I'm shocked! lololo
I don't know if I'll ever get an AR-15, but for you guys that do, keep em close by! ;-)
Best regards
Thank you for answering that question. I was going to get the MUT for my ar platform but because of this review I think I will get the gerber. It's half the price and looks like it can hold it's own. Never thought I'd say that about anything gerber lol.
You didn't have any issues with tools lumping together? Or being to tight?
I don't like the way that blade is placed. If you compare it to the Leatherman you'll see that on the Leatherman the blade is on the lower half of the handles giving you more room to work and more usable knife blade to work with.
Leatherman is hands down better in my view. Ive had both brands and I use multitools all day at work. The gerber plier release buttons are cool for about 5 minutes imho...Good luck buy what you like...peace...
go for the leatherman ,ive had one for over 15 years awesome stuff.we where issued gerbers in the army and had a number of problems.to me gerber is ok but over priced
man it would have been nice to have gotten one of those issued to me... I have always had to use a nail or something found on the spot to adjust my front sight haha
Instead of the MP600, the Diesel is the other great alternative to this model.
I love Gerber products! My husband and I have a few of their products and are not disappointed, everything is well made and very functional. You can tell every product that is made is well thought out.
I love my 600, but mines the older version with a file, saw and short phillips driver. As much as I love it, I keep it in my range bag and carry my 400 daily.
Gerber is all I buy for multi-tool ... but they used to be made in USA.
If you had 3 kids in college & could only choose one - the Gerber MP600ST or the Leatherman MUT - which would you choose?
Outstanding review. Have you ever done a video comparing the Gerber MP600 ST Multi Plier with the Leatherman MUT?
My wife wants me to quit watching your videos...it's starting to get expensive up in here!
;^{P>
Dang, I bought a Gerber multi tool for Christmas. I like this one better as it geared toward the AR.
Gerber is good quality at lower price than most, I like it and looks like a tool I could use everyday.
I have one of the first production units from years ago, Gerber IMHO usually makes a very good product.
the carbide cutters you can turn in case of dulling since it hase 3 sides
You get to test all the cool stuff sootch....I'm jealous. God Bless Kevin
