You cant believe RF is almost 10years old,its still one of my favourite retro case
I loved, loved, LOVED the Retro Freak. I gave mine to a friend once I got into MiSTer but now that i've got some ordered an old Super Famicom with some cartridges I kind of miss the thing. I loved that you could disconnect the base and just use that once I've dumped or copied some games.
Still have my original Retro Freak and love it, especially the option to use HU cards
I really like this system. You can even use translations to play japanese games in english.
ok., that I did not know.
That is awesome !
Always liked look of the RetroFreak System, who needs PolyMega lol
Polymega ... would cool to be reviewing that
The polymega is trash! It's an overpriced piece of crap that uses a celeron processor that can't even play n64. It's a total waste of money!
Just imagine if the Retrofreak played N64 games🤯
@@ericochoa4034 You can put a better CPU in it, but you may as well just buy a better used PC for a fraction of the price
@@WickedGamerCollectorcan you still get 10 men on super c with the retro trio
There’s an adapter for the game gear games, aspect ratio is in the A/V settings 👍
Yes made me laugh about aspect ratio complaint. When I saw it in the av settings lol.
Lol. I was shouting at the screen, especially when you were looking for the aspect ratio settings! Under Video options, the first setting is Aspect Ratio.
And right from the beginning you left it on *Stretch*. See 5:05 . I was _really_ hoping you would change that as soon as we saw it. I really wanted to see what options were there, and how it would scale the various systems.
Can you check, and let us know?
Lol. It's in the A/V settings! I shouted as well.
2:30 - Wiggle or not that is a nice dust guard. I like that.
This is looking kinda wicked! ;) Very cool vid and system.
i had mine for years by now and i have the Sega Adapter for playing GameGear, Master System and the SG1000 carts but you can always just load from the SD card.
Are the Game Gear games having any display issues? I've often heard how the Genesis and Master System cannot flawlessly play Game Gear.
@@ultraspinalki11 there are no display issue with the retronfresk since its software emulation and the adapter wont work on a real console
@@rickthegamefox823 Ah, thanks for the info!
So in a way it's like a emulation console if you can load roms through the Micro SD card
Kinda lame , that RF just didn't add a 4th Slot for Sega Master System .
got mine 2 years ago, its a capable console with modular design, it does not support everdrive, but you can copy your games rom that you have on it, the controller are not that great and it support other controllers. it has a mini sd slot so you save your games or roms there. it has several filters for you to try.
Quite nice that it plays 12 different consoles.
Why do you have a famicom version of Mortal Kombat deadly alliance? That was a six generation console game which was on a disc
I have an interest in these multi-system consoles. I'd like to play handheld games on a TV.
It works great.
It would be so much cooler if they release a new one with a cd reader added where we can play sega cd and pc engine cd games.
Its called the Polymega. And it costs hundreds of dollars haha
@@TheRestartPoint
Holy crap. I totally forgot about the Polymega. Thank you for reminding me.
Great review. I wonder why the GameGear never gets any love.
sold seperately according to the link
Hopefully, there is a Western 1 made for the NES , wonder why this thing doesn't have a Sega Master System , Atari 2600 , 7800 slot 😐 ? Cool concept, probably way cheaper than the PolyMega
You are the wind beneath my wings.
😮
I have it's firmware on my Retron 5. It's way better then the original firmware. The retro freak is hard to come by and super expensive. I believe you can find a Retron 5 cheaper and then find the retro freak firmware and bam.
You need an SD card to unlock its full potential. With it you can dump your cartridges and use patches like English translations and QOL hacks.
Or just use it to play downloaded roms and hacks in general. Only thing is this emulation console is from 2014 so the emulators that are built-in this are from 2013 which means it won't had the latest version of emulators like those found on RetroArch nowadays. That also means games that had glitches and bugs fix on the latest emulators (Nestopia, Kega Fusion, SNES9x, Magic Engine, VisualBoyAdvance, etc.) will still had those on this.
Now this is new I like 👍🏾
It reminds me of the Retron 3 only it plays more games like the Retron 5.
seems like you are not running the most modern firmware. Retrofreak is very similar hardware wise to retron 5. They also made a 3 in one adapter to play SMS, game gear and sega cards on it. Retron5 also runs sonic + knuckles and add on's fine on retron5. I'd assume it's the same here once you update.
I always wished Nintendo made one of these you could connect to their current gen system, kind of like the gb player for Gamecube, but better
Have you heard of the Polymega? I think you would be interested in it. Would you consider getting one? Thanks for the great video!
Yes, would love to get one to review.
Main problem is buying it i'm based in the EU here.
There's an official adapter that allows gamegear and sg1000 and mark 3 carts and cards too
The Hyperkin RetroN 5 3-in-1 adapter also works if the RetroFreak is fully updated , which is a complicated task . Edit *It also needs to be updated to use the official adapter as well*
It's a cool system for those who doesn't seek game collecting that much.
Welcome to the club the systems been out for years
I just got mine too
LOL, that is kinda funny 😄
Earthworm Jim 3 is my favorite nes bootleg! Along with Tom and Jerry 3
Wicked back on the original channel
Yes, i'm trying to get a message shedule out.
Main problem is these video's need so much work 😂
thumbnail makes it look like I can play these all at once
This is awesome, wish it had a N64 cartridge slot too.
This device so whicked & so decent at the same time, wow!
it looks like u can use a mirco sd to add different games to play from it! it looks fun!
How exactly do you buy one? The link you provided didnt have a price
Ebay .. local marketplace .. it's a challange.
I came across it some time ago.
Is this thing still available?
I believe it’s still available on playasia for $199
What do you think of a console that plays games for Famicom, NES, Famicom Disk System, Game Boy, Super Famicom/Super NES, Virtual Boy, N64, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, DS, Wii, 3DS, Wii U, and Switch?
I think they don't use the special FX chips on the cartridges themselves but make a rom dump and emulate the entire thing on the system itself. Pretty neat thing though, but a version for the western market with the other systems like Coleco and Atari 2600/7800 would be more fun here? Not many people have PC Engine stuff here anyway.
Yes, Europe missed out with most PC Engine unless you really got into imports in late 80's.
@@TheKayliedGamerChannel-TH-cam just play the roms...
it is only sold in asia...
The US had the TurboGrafx16 which are easy to find and also play on the RetroFreak .
@@zemmik This is only a usefull thing if you have the cartridges off course. Most recent PCs can emulate them all of course if you have the rom dumps.
Freaking sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
the firmware can randomly break when your updating it like mine did and now i have to agree to the legal notices, choose my language and input all my video settings every time i turn the power on.
I’d love to see one that can also play n64 games
Hyperkin was working on that 😮
If you run custom firmware you can load ROMs via SD. That may allow you to play Sonic and Knuckles+ Sonic 3 etc.
I think... you can get an Super Console X and have the same results 😅
@@WickedGamerCollector I was thinking about getting some kind of raspberry pi, but I bought a dell i7 laptop with 16gb ram (64gb max). Eventually I'll buy a 3D printer so my son and I can design custom figures, i.e. Mario, Sonic, and Mega Man characters that aren't made by toy companies. I can play emulators as a bonus. Once I get a larger hard drive, I'll buy some Steam games.
mine does run roms out of the box
It plays game boy games do they have them on eBay or Amazon need to know
Thanks for the warning and heads-up about this knock-off unit.
I have the Retron 5. This one is too expensive. Looks better though. I know it's possible to install Retrofreak firmware on the Retron 5 but I bricked one trying and couldn't unbrick it so I stick with the stock firmware. 😊
I always wanted to get that Retron 5.
Most of them I find are broken or at least 1 slot.
Or they ask 200+ euro for it 😂
@@WickedGamerCollector Yeah I saw people having issues with the slots. I've never really had that happen but I did burn one out because there's no label for the power supply. That's also a common issue. Lol. I printed a label for the power supply.
@WickedGamerCollector ...yes wicked...they are often faulty...I wanted a Retro 5 years ago and could only find one in France faulty on eBay...it's never worked..and cost me 40 Euros..I intended to try to get it repaired but I still haven't..the company is in the north America and it costs a fortune to ship it
Hi man really got to ask you what is your killer app well best game to you that you love me it was hafe life 2 real gravity in game opened the door for FPS game
retrofreak and retron 5 use the same retroarch cores they bought from the same person, i havn't heard of this device in a long time now but it is definitely the better of the two.
So, do these kinds of devices have a preloaded library within them and when you plug in a cartridge it determines the game and lets you play it? That sounds counterintuitive but I'm probably wrong in my assumptions.
This is made for you to play all your old games on an HDMI display.
With some extra build-in emulator features.
It does recognize the ROM either on the cartridge or SD slot and presents it by the name associated with it. I believe it has a list of recognized games on it that it uses to display the names when the cartridges are put in but there are no roms installed when you get it. For the Roms on the SD, it just displays the name of the ROM title.
Is there possible to buy it somewhere somehow?
Ugh, I really want their (retro freak) nes-to-famicom adapter. So hard to come by
A/V settings possibly?
yes it was visible in the very beginning.
Does it play repro cartridges?
Why wouldn't it ? clone consoles have a hard time running reproduction carts ?
You didn't tried Streets of Rage 2. But, since Sonic & Knuckles sounded correctly, Streets of Rage 2 should be fine.
It will work.
I decided to go for the Retron 5 because although it can't play the turbo or PC engine stuff (which really wasn't popular in the USA anyway), I really liked the integrated controller ports and the overall style of the console. While I was waiting for it to ship I found out I can load the Retro Freak software to my Retron so I could load ROM files from an SD card. Now I'm able to play the PCE, and Turbo games (and other systems the Retron was designed to play) from the files on the SD card or I can play them by loading them off my old cartridges.
Does it run mega Everdrive?
I just ordered one off eBay 🎉 $196
These devices are great, but the build quality needs to be better. Fantastic way to play all sorts of classic games without holding onto all of the consoles.
I think Game Freak did a console similar to this years ago but don't remember the results. This one looks awesome! Is this the version being sold or a prototype? Good review and cool video Wicked!👉🙂👈
It's a pretty cool machine, had this existence back when the Retron 3 was out I may have got that instead.
Now that I have a steam deck and MiSTer FPGA I've been getting rid of my physical collection because it's all on 2 macines now.
Yeah, that is indeed another way to go
You could say there was wiggle room for improvement
Yeah ... 🤣

I got a question you just play the Nintendo 64 did it go through or does it not work for Nintendo 64
N64 isn't supported as explained in the video
That is one strange clone console.
5:04 You have the aspect ratio option there...
Only works with normal consoles.
When using GB or GBA i could find it anymore.
Or do I have a brainfart here 😆
I think you are having a brain fart 😅 you can change the aspect in a/v settings, what you was doing was going on game settings.
Tbf i dont know how anyone can play retro games stretched @@WickedGamerCollector
I remember earthworm jim having better graphics on sega mega drive 16 bit
Maybe don’t set to auto play for flash carts? Is there no work around?
Nope, the only other way is to flash roms through a microSD card via the microSD port and just load em from there. Also flash cartridge won't be recognize cause they contain no rom datas. An emulation console used emulators to read the rom data from a cartridge game and dump it into the system then allows for that rom to run on the system. A flash cartridge replace rom data with a card reader and that card reader won't be recognize by the emulator. On a regular clone console or native system, the card reader on a multicart or flash cartridge could easily trick those systems into thinking it's a multi cartridge game but on emulation that can't be done. It's the same reason why the Super Game Boy will only work on native or clone consoles but not on an emulation console cause the Super Game Boy doesn't had rom data for the GB game in it but instead feature a cartridge slot reader and that cartridge slot reader won't be recognize on emulator. If you insert a Super Game Boy with a GB game on this thing, only the Super Game Boy bio screen will load but not the actual GB game in it.
@@VOAN thanks, ok, I understand a bit more. If u find a cheap pc engine clone console, definitely b into that. The current options r expensive.
I like this
👍👍™️
Bummer doesn't play multi carts,
Nice for some, however I prefer the Retrobit Super Trio Plus as its hardware not emulation. But thanks for the nice alternative to the Retron 5.
i have a retron 5 n luv it.. but ive always wanted too try the super retro tro plus.. they have a retro trio plus with a 4/3 16/9 switch on the front now.
Where do you buy ?
Aliexpress ?
Nope .. from Japan or Evil-Bay.

@@Memememe-is1yn ok thanks
The Retron5 is a clone of Retro Freaks. It is apparent when some accessories like the Master System/Game Gear adapter works on both systems.
Mmm... yeah no idea where to find those LOL

How much does this retro freak console cost?? 🎮🕹️🎮
$199
Aspect ratio zit onder de a/v settings.
I was also missing out bazel options maybe 😅 specially with the GB
can overclock game?
its a emulator. creates the rom with the cartdrige, and play it...
Why do u never tell the prices of the stuff? Makes me crazy. Always have to look it up after video.
Prices go up and down on ali-express.
And.... this old product needs to be bought on used marked.
can you use multi rom cartridges
Isn't the Hyperkin RetroN 5 a much better console?
Don't know never got that one.
Hard to get and crazy expensive used if they are not broken 🤣
I have both and I only play RetroFreak. Way above the RetroN5. Anyway most Hyperkin products are garbage.
No, it really isn't. Mine has NO lag and the controller/setting options are far superior, as is the library of games that can be played via the SD card.
Where can I get one
But can you turn off that annoying noise when your moving through the menus?😊
Did not see any settings for that 🤣
No. The only drawback for me.
not gonna waste my time with people who don't wanna sell , they dont even list the price on the site
Imagine all this when you were a kid?
Yeah would be mind blowing 🤣
I bought a RetroFreak some years ago and it bricked only a few months after owning it. I was disappointed to say the least, but now that I own a Polymega and all the different modules all is great!
Get a snes FXPAK PRO it worth it totally
Can it run Crysis 😅
Looks like a more basic version of the retron 5(unless you're a huge TG16 guy)
Not a fan of having to use adapters to use original controllers.
I wish you tested a GBC enhanced game that runs on the OG gameboy but plays better on the GBC.
For example if you try to play Links Awakening DX on the Super gameboy it will have a special fancy boarder but the game will play like on an original game boy.
This was something that botherd me with the retron 5.
There's gives and takes to using adapters . The best advantage is that it gives you 5 different controller ports instead of just 3 and it can be replaced if a port goes bad . I would say that the RetroFreak is more advanced than the RetroN 5 . I had both and gave away the Retron 5 , at the time the Retron 5 couldn't even dump ROMs .
The RetroFreak is also able to use multiple USB controllers as it has 3 USB ports in the front of the unit , the RetroN has 1 USB in the back .
do action replay cards work with it
It has a cheat code thing built in

Nope, I tested this 👍
@@WickedGamerCollector Thanks
Can this play multicarts, EZ drive and everdrive cartridges.

no
So where did you buy it from?

This clone emulation console use to be a hot item back in 2014 as a competitor to the Retron 5 when it comes to retro HD emulation. Unlike the Retron 5 this one support the PC Engine and unlike the Retron 5 you could easily flash roms through microSD and just play it through that using the built in emulators the console came with. Retron 5 is the same way as well but flashing roms to that one is a bit tricky. Using adapters, you could also play SG-1000, Game Gear, and Sega Master System games on it as well but not Sega CD, Sega 32X, N64, and Turbo CD games. Back then I too was going to get this console but I realize the cartridge slot on there only support Famicom and not NES games out of the box so I passed on it and choose Retron 5 instead.
WHATS INSIDE IT WHY YOU DID NOT DO TERDOWN
Hahaha... always when I skip the teardown or I just forget I read it back in the comments 😆
I bought mine several years ago, but unfortunately the input lag was too much for me. They should update the core module with a new processor.
I got mine in 2017. Never had ANY lag. It is FAR superior to almost all other emulation systems (besides Mister) in this respect in my opinion.
ay spanish steve o reviewing game systems. subbed
mister is still leagues better but this is cheaper id assume. pi 5 probably a better option over this
Great vid but why are you torturing us with the stretched aspect ratio?
All I need to know is desert play Nintendo games if it does I'm sold
Update the firmware!
There are actually two updates on the RetroFreak that both need to be done for full functionality . They have a System update 2.0 and Data update 2.7 .
No Master System? So close to perfect!
Can't anything that plays Genesis also play Master System?
It runs Master System fine. You either plug in an adapter or put a rom on an sd card.
