Thanks, I've owned a 2019 CX-5 Signature since Dec. 2018 and now have 36,000 trouble free miles on it. Overall I love it. My only compliant is that the dark brown seats are too dark. They should be a lighter brown or saddle color. I'm very happy with the power and gas mileage. I think this car compares well with luxury brands costing $10-15,000 more and is more reliable also.

My two cents on seat comfort. I know this is an entirely subjective category, but I have a chronically bad back. I’ve owned a 2019 Signature for over two years, and find the seats extremely comfortable and supportive. Just took a trip from Chicago to Detroit, and had no back issues for over 300 miles. My previous car was a 2015 Accord that drove my back crazy!

I know it would be nice to have a touch screen as well. But I have to say I like the dial more while driving. Feels safer as I can maneuver the menus without spending so much time looking where I point when comparing my Mazda and Honda's infotainment.

Morning, Kirk! It's so great that YOUR GIRLS keep so much composure during the whole take (I've seen some "adult" YT'ers faring worse as passengers).
AFAIK, the next (3G) CX-5 would be kept as an upgraded FWD-based one while a new (OG) CX-50 on the new RWD platform would take the RDX and the other luxury compact crossovers.

I have a 2020 CX-5 Signature and it's been a great vehicle with lots of luxury under $40,000. I have a narrow one-car garage, so the 360 degree surround view camera helps as well as the power folding mirrors. Although, I can touch the infotainment screen, on the old Mazda Connect, I don't find myself touching the screen very often. Mazda's control knob was easy for me to get comfortable with. I agree with you about the seats in the CX-5, they're ok but could be better. The seats in my 2018 Mazda 6 G/T were much more comfortable. Hopefully the new Mazda 6 will be in the showrooms when my lease ends.

Kirk, a little late to your show, but some comments. I currently have a 2020 Mazda CX-5 Touring (base) FWD. It's my third Mazda. First was a 2016 Mazda3 hatchback 2.0 Touring (leased May 2016), followed by a 2018 CX-5 AWD Touring (base) (leased March 2018 - replaced the Mazda3). Those were both leased on Long Island, NY. Number 3 (current) leased June 2020 here in Florida (Delray Beach). I've been very happy with them. All three red, Soul Red Metallic (Mazda3), Soul Red Crystal Metallic (CX-5). The first two had black seats, the 2020 has beige seats. 2.5 non-turbo engines in both CX-5s.
I love the driving dynamics of these vehicles. Plenty of acceleration, great handling and brakes. Excellent ergonomics, layout of instrumentation and gauges. Mine has the base audio system (no BOSE). I prefer that because I use the space in the spare tire for my jumper cables. And I do like that Mazda includes a spare tire. Back in early 2017 on Long Island I hit a pot hole the size of Lake Okeechobee. I broke the rim of the right front tire. Because I had a spare I was able to drive to my dealer and buy a new one without needing to be towed.
Regarding the interior color of your test car, perhaps a different exterior color would have had a nicer interior color.
I laughed as you experienced "Florida driver" at the intersection. The problem with driving in Florida is two fold. First as the native Florida drivers, and second are those that came down here from other states with their bad driving habits.
One issue I take about modern cars is that about insulation from exterior noise. If a car had perfect noise insulation how would the driver hear horns and sirens? Along that same train of thought is the audio system. Shouldn't there be restrictions on the maximum volume so that again the driver can hear outside sounds like horns and sirens?
Is there room for improvement for the CX-5? Yes. Let's see what happens in 2022 when the next generation CX-5/CX-50 is released.
Finally, your daughters are adorable. Enjoy them as much as you can because they do grow quickly (mine is 23 - how did that happen?).

Excellent review Kirk! Anyone looking at a BMW X3 or a Mercedes GLC really ought to test drive the CX-5 first. I think it's a hidden gem that's terrific value, great to drive, and I guarantee it'll be more reliable than the German cars, too. For the sweet spot in the CX-5 range, I'd go for the Grand Touring Reserve trim, which saves >$2K over the Signature trim, but you still get the turbo engine, Bose sound system, and the ventilated seats. Winner!

One nit picky thing about the DRL's. When parked, they look really cool with the light ring and the "signature" lighting. However the minute you hit about 5 mph, the headlights come on at about 1/2 brightness, essentially making it look like you have your headlights on. You are suppose to be able to change this, but Mazda dealership said you can't.

I ended up getting a 2021 CX-5 Carbon Turbo AWD edition back In March as a daily driver, I already have a weekend/fun far, and I wanted something that was fun to drive didn't break the bank, and was kid/dogs friendly. I have to say after 3 months of owning the CX-5 Carbon Turbo AWD the 250 HP 320 TQ is such a beast. Here in Texas we get 93 octane for cheap, and it's been one of the greatest decisions I've been in my life in getting the Carbon Turbo AWD. Gas milage on my previous M5 is terrible and granted that the M5 was so much more faster and fun to drive, it wasn't a good daily driver for me.

I thought the same thing with the seats. I have a 2021.5 signature as well. I'm a bigger guy 6'1 275lb and after 30 mins of driving (which is why I didn't notice on test drive) I was very uncomfortable. I was very upset thinking I had to deal with this for yrs, then after about 1000 miles the seats broke in and are very comfortable. I can drive for hours now without any discomfort. Thank God lol.

I'm very proud of Mazda and how far they've come over the years. When Mazda came up with this Kodos design language, I wasn't too thrilled with it, but as they do their minor updates it looks more and more better from every angle and it's growing on me. I cant wait to see this upcoming rear drive CX-50 I feel it's going to be a big hit

In regards to the infotainment display... A plus is not having finger prints all over it. My 2017 Mazda 3 always had those show up at certain angles and lighting conditions. My 2021 RF forces me to never touch the screen now. Thanks for another great real world evaluation on the CX-5!

My wife just bought a 21 CX5 gran touring reserve and I totally agree with you about the seats. They are hard, narrow and short. I have a 2018 Mazda6 and the seats are absolutely perfect in every way. I also feel the CX5 is louder and has a harsher ride.

  • @InexplicableBill

My wife has the 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve. The turbo power is incredible and the driving experience is best served with 93 octane fuel. The acceleration is swift and puts a smile on my face every time, especially when it shifts to second gear. Second gear is magical in this car! Kirk, I 100% agree with you about the seats; the leather feels great to the touch but it is very taught so you feel like you're sitting "on" it instead of "in" it, and the seat backside bolsters are average at best. I also notice every time I get in either of the front seats that the metal seat frame below the cushions is narrow and my outer hip bones feel like they're wedged between the side bolsters. It's terrible for long-distance drives. I'm surprised you felt the rear seat legroom is sufficient. My wife is 5-10. I'm 6-0, and my sons are 6-3 & 6-5. For our family, this is a 2 person vehicle when considering a long-distance trip. NObody wants to be in the back seat for very long when we're all traveling together. And that small rear seatback recline feature is almost useless since the seat cushions feel a little flat and unsupportive. I never want to be in the back. So we have this great car and we never use it for road trips with the fam. We have to use our 13-year-old Highlander. Womp.
Finally, and something I consider a big deal with my 30+ year history of driving Mazdas, is the brakes you thought felt so awesome. I've been fixing my own cars since forever, and one thing I can bank on is having to replace the brake calipers in any of the 5 older Mazdas we've owned. I buy remanufactured calipers from a reputable auto parts store and swap them in every 2 or 3 years under their lifetime warranty when they start to corrode and bind. The weak link with these calipers is the seals on the glide pins, which allow water into the pin pocket and cause corrosion and binding. I usually know it's time when I'm in stop-and-go traffic and the car slows itself to a stop when coasting... It's very frustrating but it's one of those qualities I expect from the Mazda-specified (meaning cheap) Akebono brakes in 5 of the 7 Mazdas my wife and I have owned over the decades. I mention this, Kirk, as you waxed eloquently about Mazdas brakes. It's an interesting subject for me, as we've been watching Mazda reach for the Premium label for a decade now, yet I still see Akebono brakes on their cars, a decidedly non-premium component, at least the way Mazda specs them for their vehicles. They're just fine for about a year, and Mazda needs to step the hell up and follow Toyota's lead with how they design and specify their brake calipers. Our 2008 Highlander has its original calipers. My 2004 Mazda 6 is on it's 4th or 5th set by now. And my wife's CX-5, despite being a hoot to drive, has always had very spongy brakes. I always brake late after driving any of our other cars because it takes me 100 feet or more of travel to figure out where the brakes start to bite. My wife is used to it, but our Highlander, Mazda 6 and my GS350 all brake deliberately with zero guesswork. I've complained to the dealer and they said they were working according to specs. In disbelief, I bled the brakes and got air bubbles out of 3 of the 4 calipers, and topped off with synthetic fluid. Almost no improvement. So it's either a fluke or I'm missing something.
Sorry for the diatribe. I really enjoy your videos Kirk, especially when you go "Squirrel!" over something your camera caught. :)

As noted in the video the CX-5 is a tremendously important vehicle for Mazda. Not only is it the best selling Mazda vehicle in the US, it outsells all other models put together! It's an appealing vehicle in many ways but it does have one glaring weakness -- the cramped interior space especially for cargo. At 179" long it's firmly in the "compact" SUV category, only 3" inches shorter than a CR-V. Yet the CX-5 has 37.6 cubic ft of cargo space behind the second row and 75.8 cf overall. The CX-5 counters with 30.9 cf behind the rear seats and only 59.6 cf overall. In fact, not only does the CX-5 rank at the bottom of all "compact" SUVs, it offers less cargo space than several SUVs in the "subcompact" category. (e.g. Kia Seltos, VW Taos). Even telling is that the CX-5's cargo capacity barely exceeds that of a GTI (54 cf), a vehicle that's nearly a foot shorter than the Mazda.

Thanks for this in-depth review of a truly top quality SUV (per Consumer Reports).. I have a 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve (2.5 L., AWD) and love it. OK, I don't have the new paddle shifters ;o(, the larger screen, the Nappa leather or the extra 10 ft. lbs. of torque. BUT... I do have about 5 more horsepower (drop-in K&N air filter) and less turbo lag with a CorkSport down pipe. Much stiffer than the OEM pipe so noticeably better throttle response/less turbo lag.
I added a CorkSport oil catch can to condense crankcase vapors so they don't get to the air/oil separator and the back of my intake valves.
"DRESS-UP" MODS: Dealer roof racks, interior trunk cover, lighted door sill plates and rear bumper protector plate. Ali Express (China) dual hood gas props, stainless & rubber pedal covers and many brushed aluminum trim pieces. All "Ali stuff" is of amazingly good quality - it just takes 5 weeks to arrive!

I now have a WRX and my friend has the new Mazda 3 turbo and he agrees my seats are more comfortable. I think all top luxury brands focus heavily on seat comfort, Mazda needs to do some market research here in the states. Subaru most comfortable seats are the Outback with the leg extension great idea and not even trying to be a luxury brand.

This cx5 is hard to say. The interior is nice, but drive smooth is not. My wife cx5 2018 top spec, gives chock feeling whenever i release gas pedal at a low speed (~30km/h). Steering wheel, hmm it's like Play station race steering wheel. It feels hard and has a bit of room to play around, definitely difference feeling from Toyota steering wheel (in a negative way). But the car is super reliable.

What's the matter with cancelled Mazda6, rebranding the inline 6 RWD?

Yes that's the point. Rwd inline 6 can no longer be called 6. Smart move by Mazda
