  • The Mazda CX-5 has been updated with a new infotainment system. The old MZD Connect system is gone and Mazda has replaced it with a big new infotainment system for the 2021 Mazda CX-5. Is it any good? Paul Maric tests out the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Akera to find out.

Hey guys - there’s a mistake in this video - sorry! We’ve quoted figures for the diesel in the video. The petrol outputs are 170kW of power and 420Nm of torque, not 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque. Apologies again!

Right within the new Escape’s alley power output. 0-100 though, priti good.
Mazda now is what the Korean cars are trying to be. A cheaper option against the European counterparts.

I have just bought one (Akera Turbo) after comparing with RAV-4 Hybrid. The Mazda won despite the fact I was certain I wanted the RAV initially. Mazda are the Japanese BMW. Refined, polished and poised on the road. Toyotas CVT gearbox was annoying as was the overly rubberised interior. Toyota won on fuel economy but that was it. I am very impressed with the Mazda !

Picked up my Akera Turbo on Monday 12/04 in the same colour as the test vehicle. 450kms later, including 300 country klm's, we are in love with the car. The toss up between the Rav4 Hybrid was real but overall we felt the Mazda is a better car, apart from fuel economy. (got used to the heads up display in a Mazda 3). A very good review that validated our decision. The improvements in this model showed that Mazda is listening to it's customers. Found the car to be very quite on the country roads that we travelled on and super quiet in the freeway at 110 km/h. Thanks for the review

Not sure how your comment is in reference to mine, But, so what happened with your CX-9? you said it was towed back to the dealership. Did they fix it? was it separate problems? what was the problem you experienced aside from your not likening Mazada now, which is ok, not everyone has the same experience with the same vehicle model or same dealership. How did the dealership treat you? you said they didn't tell you what was wrong with the car? what was on the work order they gave you as part of the receipt? I am curious, because this matters in some models of cars, where is the CX-9 made? was your problem a design issue or a production issue at the factory?

After doing my research and test driving some cars I bit the bullet today and put a deposit down for this Akera. At 6ft 1and a bit inches, when I sat in the front passenger seat of the Hybrid Rav4 Cruiser my head touched the ceiling and there was no height adjustment available, even in that top trim, so I had to rule it out. This Akera is beautifully appointed and goes really well with the turbo. Can't wait to take delivery.

Rav 4 may be cheaper and have just as many features if not more, but I would argue that what is more important is how the car makes you feel on a day to day basis. The better driving experience, the more elegant interior and exterior design (that match the likes of Lexus), and in my opinion more intuitive infotainment make the CX 5 a better car to use on a daily basis. A car which has character and not just a tool to get you places. These are areas where Mazda have spent R&D on and should not go unappreciated. Otherwise, Mazda may no longer have a purpose to continue trying to excel in these areas and just slap on as many crude features as possible. Consumers would then have to spend Mercedes or BMW amounts of money to get a similar experience and character. As such, I would spend the extra to get a CX 5.
P.s. I think the CX 5 is a much more timeless and elegant design than the RAV 4. I think the RAV 4 just looks excessively designed and crudely bold. It lacks cohesion.

    • @onlyhuman2015

Toyota still makes whitegoods on wheels, just with a sports bodykit as standard now. Mazda's drive like a BMW and are built like a Lexus. Toyota can't get too nice with the interior or risk caniballising Lexus. Mazda has the freedom to push into the near-luxury space and win sales from potential Audi or Lexus buyers who would pay more for a car with zero standard features compared to the Akera (everything delegated to the option$ li$t.

I own a 2016 CX 5...bought in 2017. The only thing that is lousy about it is that the infotainment center never worked well. The Bluetooth signal will drop out from time to time. Sometimes I think it’s weather related the hotter it is the quicker the signal seems to drop. But that might be a coincidence
    1. It’s reliable and the gas mileage is good. Doesn’t cost that much to fill it up
    2. It’s quick. I wanted a car that accelerated quickly to get onto freeways and this does and the boost button is a good feature for this
    3. I don’t have rear AC/heater vents or controls, but the front vents do ok with cooling or heating the cab
    4. I have the cloth seats and were a little stiff for my liking, but tolerable
    5. Surprisingly the back space has decent room for storage. It works fairly well when you have the seats down to if you need to haul stuff
    6. I’m going on my fourth year with the car at 60,000+ miles and no major problems.

Great review Paul, and spot on with your observations. I've owned the 2020 model for a year now and love it. I do a bit of towing, and the torque converter auto is perfect for my needs, and is a bit of a rarity these days with so many CVT's and DSG's being used instead. I agree that the road noise is a bit louder than it should be for a car pitched at this sort of price, and hopefully as you say Mazda will sort that out with the next generation model. I was lucky enough to get mine pretty much a year ago at the start of the Covid lockdown in Victoria and got about an 8k discount on it. The next gen 6 sounds very tempting for me next time around though, with RWD and the new in line 6 engine.

Good day Paul, I'm from South Africa. Here the CX-5 has been recently revised, but there is no 10.25" infotainment screen. The only thing new is that carbon edition with the new paint and red interior. It really frustrated me when I heard this because the only thing I hated from the old CX-5 was the small screen... Also not impressed with the fuel economy as readout - was showing 13.5 per 100ks naturally aspirated, 11.5 for the diesel, and 12.8 turbo. Yes I was pushing the cars a bit but not that much.

Being a ford man i found the VF2 to be a damn good car that i actually bought a VF2 Motorsport. Such a shame that these sedans are no longer made, and now we only get crappy dual cabs and suvs. Oh well i have my XR8 Sprint and my VF2 Motorsport and I'll keep these and drive them as much as i can, but the prices off both of these cars are going for more than i paid for them and now i wonder if i should be driving them at all.
For a 2017 car, the VF2 is such a well built and well handling car that beats out most things today and for the price you couldn't go wrong. I don't understand peoples love for SUVs, they are all useless compared to a sedan. Don't people realize that in a sedan you had more room in the back row and in the boot. The only other car i would consider is a petrol ute (dpf issues is a big turn off) if one would come out but in the mean time the car market has lost the plot.
