I really like this fugue. It seems there are a growing number, of Bach, and Fugue enthusiasts, who are dedicating themselves to a Renaissance of composition in the Baroque Fugal tradition, and practice. I'm glad that the YT search engine relented a bit and revealed this one to me after only 2 months of daily search on this topic,.. just now I am finding fugues, that have been posted 3-5 years ago. Almost every time , I think i am finding something new, I find Mr. Eskeland has left some constructive observations, already in the comment section. I was surprised to find that the lists of video's I had been compiling for my own amusement had been "released" by YT and show up in searches on a given subject, for instance the one I call "Art of Fugue" . Perhaps Geir Eskeland would consider doing the same,.. as he always seems to find the gems that have been uploaded, first. Thank You John Vogt, for sharing Your efforts in composition with us, and adding to the scholarship on the subject.

Thanks, Geopholus. I look forward to checking out your playlist and discovering new works of the kind you describe. It really is a special art, and it's great that people are rediscovering it. Hopefully I'll be adding more of my own contributions as well.

And now your comment is the same 4 years old to me, which makes me sad, as it worries me if everything is alright after all that time with people appreciating this beauty. I feel the pressure in my chest that comes with nostalgic feelings, all so heavy... How much I would like to hear it all, to meet and greet each great mind who composed, who composes, and who listens and appreciates, shake their hands, have hours of talking to remember great society of theirs from...

@@fatitankeris6327 ,... Yes there are people in this world who do appreciate this beauty and Your attention adds to those ranks. Some of those who contribute to that art are right here in the comment section including. Sergio Valenzuela,... others are Nicholas Papadimitriou,, Steveistheman84,, Jack Levinson, Nicholas Jackson, Zoltan Goncz, Thomas Brunner, Thomas Matyas, "Baroque Noise", "theDiasneb", Pablo Escande, Orlando Aponte, Richard Atkinson, and of Course John Voigt, not to mention many others. I have compiled a list of some fugue composers that have uploaded some of their excellent work to You Tube . If You look at my channel: Geopholus, that list is called: Great New Fugues. Another focuses on the: Art of Fugue, but includes generally many works that inform our knowledge on Fugue writing.

This impresses me more than mastering the performance of music by past composers. Attempting to work out something that has not quite been said before, that to me is the real dedication and inspiration.

It is like that to me as well, which got me into composing. All great I wish to you, again me turning sad from matter that it have been years since this was uploaded, and how much of this great audience might be far from here, how much I could've missed. All of the great minds, composing and listening, I greatly wish well-being to.

Im impressed how a “slow and dissonant” theme can become something like this. Good work!

Great job! Compositionally and stylistically it is a convincing fugue. However, you may want to check the playability at bars 9, 11, 13, 30, 36 and 45. Some of those stretches are a bit awkward on a keyboard instrument, especially at that speed. At bar 36, you have a trill in the left hand and very wide double-sixteenths the in the right hand. In general, when there are 2 voices of a 3-voice fugue moving briskly, consider whether or not it is distributable between two hands. If it has to be played by one hand, check its playability. But otherwise, I'm pleasantly surprised to see this on my TH-cam feed. Fugues are a dying art and I'm glad to see they're still practised, even in academia. :)

Hey, thanks! And I appreciate the feedback. I didn't envision this being a keyboard piece per se--I just wrote it to demonstrate the key features of fugue as part of a larger project--so I didn't put a ton of thought into into playability and whatnot. I'll definitely keep your thoughts in mind, though, if ever do write a piece for an actual keyboardist!

Beautiful work, with a hefty development, congratulations, love it!.
Happy to find another curious soul experimenting on channelling the language of Bach,
This is so analog to a jazz player emulating her (his) musical heroes.
(BTW, curiously we used a very similar subject on the first notes : ))

    Hello
Just out of curiosity i searched for original fugue. I have to admit im somewhat skeptical of things particularly music in general.
But i was pleasently suprised by your piece. I hope you take this as a compliment but if someone told me this was a bach fugue i wouldnt think twice
I kind of wrote one. I dont know what to think of mine. I tried playing it to a small audience but im not a great keyboard player.
Id love to talk to you about fugues. And counterpoint.
My fugue doesent sound like this. I think one reason is my theme is slower. I did think i havent listened to a lot of bach but im pretty sure he wrote some fugues with slower tempos.
I thouhht my theme doesent play like this on a piano atleast the way i play it hear it.
One question id love to ask is how you compose? Like how did you come up with this subject?
Anyway im really impressed and suprised how much i like your fugue

The only thing that I feel like is not very Bachian (just a feeling don't exactly know why) is the theme itself xD

Have you heard the prelude and fugue in D (I think bk 1)? The fugue has a similar theme to this one.

It is very Bachian, for example fugue in g minor for violin starts exactly like this.

Sorry for my inadequate English. Thumbs up from me. But the pace is too fast in my opinion. This is not your first attempt how to write a fugue. Is it possible to find other works by John Vogt on TH-cam?

It’s really far from Bach. Maybe it’s handelsque fugue but with such simply theme Bach piece evolving would be much more musical. But it’s really nice for its purpose.
