      I have a power window that doesn't work at all, the switch on the door doesn't move it up or down and the switch on the driver door doesn't move it up or down. Can I move the window down once I get the door panel off?

    watched it 3 times and just finished my 2002 Accord front drivers side. Everything went well....except it appears the speaker now only has 3 screws holding it in. I think I'll live with it. I'm not much of a mechanic but this site has saved me hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars in recent years.

    I originally clicked on your channel because of fond memories of Kilmer's IGA, in Rhinebeck, NY. So funny that you're doing this on the same car that I'm working on lol! You're the best!
    EDIT: Never buy an aftermarket regulator. Less than a year and it's loose and sending my window outside of the frame. Lesson learned.

    Thank you Scotty! I had to do this today. Your video helped! I tested the window before I put everything back together like you suggested. The window was not in the track properly so it would not go all the way up. I put it in the track properly and then it worked. Good thing I checked!

    Scotty, just a tip: whem you plug the switch in, raise the regulator to line up to the two holes in the door. You can get right on the window bolts with your socket and extension. You don't have to reach around to the inside of the door.

    This is my exact car, lol. 01 Accord 317k miles. I'm watching this in 2023 and getting inspired for a weekend project. Both my driver side and passenger window seems to be off track but I won't know until I look. I know it's gonna take me at least a few hours. It might end up being both the first and last time I ever have to do it, so I have no delusions of a quick repair. Thanks Scotty!

    Before you do any buying take the panel off and have a look.! I just repaired my vw .when I took the panel off I could see the plastic dowel through the glass connecting it to the whole regulator gizmo, had worked its way out .popped it back in and hey presto working perfectly.

    Well Scott, I must say. Watching your video was more informative than most others I've watched so far. Most of those produced by Auto Companies usually end up telling you it's too hard for a DIY person & to give them a call and let them do the work for $$$. Now one minor critique, your demonstration was like trying to keep up with a roadrunner. Beep Beep ! I realize we all have our own particular personalities and I wouldn't dare imply you should change. Thanks for the Demo !

      😂 I did mine about 2 weeks ago. Got it working so i could at least close it so rain doesn’t get in but it wasn’t smooth so I disconnected the motor to protect it from burning out until I have time to try again. I need a hand to help hold that glass in place to line it up better. Professionals make it look so easy 😂

    Scotty, I have a 2008 Honda CRX. The other day I went to put the power driver's side window up. I heard a sound like something snapped, then the window fell down most of the way and stopped. I grabbed hold of it with both hands and could move it up and down. It moved almost without resistance. I held it in place half way down and tried to see if making the switch go up would engage the window. No luck. I pushed the window up and wedged it in place till I got home and tried again to see if the window would engage, again no luck. I then used some clear packing tape to keep it in place till repairs could be affected.
    I could hear the motor working easily in both up and down switch positions. Have you ever heard of the two screws at the bottom of the window working themselves loose? If not is there anything that a little JB Weld could fix? Thanks for your well filmed and clear sounding videos? I just noticed that you have a live Sat program. I hope to see it soon.
    Thanks,
    Frank in NC

    That Accord looks a lot easier than my 2002 Cavalier was. The brain surgeons at GM used pop rivets to attach the regulator to the door instead of bolts. Took some ingenuity and four letter words to make that repair.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      BUT, think of the money GM saved by using rivets instead of small bolts. Gotta be at least 50 cents per car there.

    • @ScubaCat3
      @ScubaCat3 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can replace them with cheap screws from Home Depot or something; you don't have to put rivets back. Ford does the same crap too, so you're not alone...

    I've had this happen before, but mainly just because the glass fell off the assembly and was easily slapped back in place. yet another reason to keep sure your seals are good and clean so water and junk doesn't get in there and destroy your door from the inside out. good tips Scotty!

    As usual, good job in the very educational video! :) This is too much work for most people in the Philippines. We may get into a sticky situation if we don't get it right the first time.
    It only costs $25 or less to have someone do all the repairs (with parts) for us. Good auto mechanic/repairmen are everywhere in the Philippines. :)
    Again, I love watching your channel. Very educational, at least I would somewhat understand what the repairmen are saying when they explain to me the process. :)

    I have a 2002 Honda Odyssey with 160K miles on it that has never had any kind of mechanical breakdown and has run almost perfectly since I bought it ....
    BUT, every GOD-DAMNED thing else has gone wrong ... the headlights and tail-lights burn out regularly of course, the clock light has gone out, and the little light under the "D" for drive for the transmission indicator is out. The motors for the rear windows have both gone out twice, and this is the third regulator I have to have replaced not.
    I am so glad the car runs well, but these annoying little things are expensive, time consuming and a major pain in the ass.
    I like how you make it seem so easy. How hard it the original part to repair? Is that possible?
    I tried it on my own originally, but one major pain was that plastic wrap, another was could not get the window separated from the regulator ... so I just took it in. This is a very expensive repair for a part that should not fail as much as it does.

    he makes it seem so simple and easy... since he has worked on thousands of cars. a regular guy who never did this before better be careful not to get hurt, to break the window, to mount the assembly wrong, or damage something taking out the old or installing the new. It is not simple or intuitive.

    Thanks Scotty. My Regulator cable broke and I plan to fix it myself. Great video to get me started. Why is't this guy working for NASA. He could make flying the Shuttle look like flying a kite.

    hey scotty, thanks for all your videos. I have saved tons of money thanks to them. I have a 2002 ford crown victoria with a standard open differential. is it possible to get a limited slip differential or a kit to make the differential limited slip? normally i would leave it alone, but we had a very snowy winter here in NJ

    Fixed my back window using the same principle. THANK YOU!
    I have a question: My passenger front window has started to "slow" on rising. If I let it down a few inches, it'll go back up just fine. But if I let it down halfway, it'll "slowly" creep up and stop within four inches of the top. Over a period of 15-20 minutes, I can inch it up. (The motor sounds pitiful to have exert such an effort.)
    Is that a bad motor or assembly? I'm thinking the tension spring in the assembly, but if I need the whole shebang, I'll order the kit. Just trying to save $$$ on this poor little 99 Toyota Camry. (She's been a good car, though.)
    Thank you in advance!
    Trish

    The biggest difference between power windows and the old crank ones is that the latter usually lasted the life of the car while power windows seem to be designed to fail.

    Yeah, I remember when this happened to my 1997 Crown Vic I used to have. My mom was rolling the window down one day and CRUNCH!!!...busted. Thankfully one of the LDS missionaries that I'd been helping out with tracting knew how to work on cars and was able to find the problem and prop up the window with a board. Turned out that the cable got tangled in the motor and ended up shredding itself!

    Hi Scotty,
    My driver side power window won't work anymore. After it broke, It used to make a noise when I pressed the power window buttons but now it doesn't make any noise at all. Does that mean the power window motor is damaged too?

    I actually fixed it , not replaced . I replaced plastic parts that broken with self-made brass ones , fixed them with steel wire , rewinded cable and put it all back in place . Only problem was that cable pulley was not held by sreews , but by rivets . That is how I maintain car with no budget .

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      sure, it can be done. But you must not be an American, cause we don't have the time or energy to do that. We just throw the crap away and put another one back on. Keeps the economy rolling

      You live differetnly . My house in made in 1978 , out of solid bricks . My grandfathet's house is almost as old as he is , it is made buy his father out of wood from his forest and clay from his well . Youngest car in my familly is from year 2000 , and oldest from 1985 . We fix things as long as possible , not replace them . Even laptop on which I write is 6 years old , and I disasmbled it for at least 8 times fixing it . I am from country where Yugo was made , and you would not belive how many Yugos from period when they were exported in US and rusted away there are still on the road here . My friend about year ago paid $700 for repainting his , for that money he could get at least 10 years younger and more modern car , but he decided to keep his on the road . Imagine yourself dumping (I believe your) Stingray if it becomes pile of rust . Or you would rather remake every panel yourself ?

      Mladen Milić here in America the government gives people money every month and they buy new stuff all the time..hey they don't even try to resale the old stuff they just throw it out and buy the new thing they want...
      what would buy if it was free ?

    • @Psalm_27.4
      @Psalm_27.4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mladen Milić I am American, but I say you're doing thingd the right way. Scotty's comment about throwing crap away and buy another to keep the economy rolling--I don't think it's the only way to keep the economy rolling. I truly wish I had been raised to learn to repair rather than replace. Perhaps there is still some time left for me to learn. I have two strikes against me--I'm a woman, and I'm no longer a "spring chicken" (an american idiom for "young"), but hopefully I can go on TH-cam and learn from people like you, who are much smarter and economical than we Americans are. Frankly, if everyone knew how to repair things and keep them going, we wouldn't have the economic exploitation that we do, and no one would be truly "poor." Thank you SO MUCH for posting.

    Question Scotty, My 97 firebird started making a squeaking noise from the front passenger side wheel. Only when I'm driving up to 35mph and over it squeaks constant. When I'm driving and tap the brakes it goes away. I installed new calipers and pads. The rest is original.
