I know this song was created well before social media but it feels like it was written about it. More and more and more all the time. That screechy sound in the beginning is the discomfort before you like what they’re giving you. Next thing you know they’re elbow deep and you’re wanting more.

Part of me is jealous of anyone getting to experience Tool songs for the first time.

I met Danny Carey at a Meshuggah concert. Listen to Bleed by Meshuggah. The drumming is incredible. Even Danny Carey's jaw was on the floor. Tomas Hakke is by no means better than Danny, but the difficulty of the drums in that song is crazy. The guitarist created the drum part on a computer, and it took Tomas almost 9 months to learn it.

I remember on MTV, this video was called Track 1 as opposed to Stinkfist...can't imagine why?....possibly my favorite Tool song...playing with the question (both literally and metaphysically) of alternatives to boredom...like a lot of Maynard's lyrics, there is the face value, and then there's the layers of symbolism that he leaves for you to discover, if you do choose. It's not mandatory to enjoy the experience, it's just there for those who care for such things. For thirty years, I have greatly appreciated those options...

    (I) Message to Harry Manback 2 (can be skipped or added to You Lied)
You Lied (live Peach cover - Justin's former band)
    Merkaba (live)
    No Quarter (Led Zeppelin Cover)

    Descending (you've done)
    Culling Voices
    Chocolate Chip Trip (drum solo)
    7empest (you've done)
*Opiate 2* this was a special 30-year anniversary re-issue as a gift to the fans
I hope this list inspires you to do their entire catalogue!!!
PS - don't worry about video length, the Tool Army doesn't care.

The reason the drums stand out so much is because while most bands highlight the vocals, Tool always just treated the vocals as just another instrument in the band. That can make it difficult to hear Maynard sometimes, but it really highlights the skill of the rest of the band.

When you refer to the "structure", I think your referring to, what in music is called the time signature. Most commercial music is in 4/4 time and probably what your used to. This song is in 4/4 which is unusual for Tool, but this song was played on the radio, and most radio friendly songs are in 4/4. Tools time signatures are usually all over the place and take awhile or a trained ear to get used to. Having said that, I love the poly rhythms and time signatures Tool plays with.

This is my favorite song of all time, ever, by anyone. It’s one of those songs that means different things to different people. For me, I had a moment of revelation listening to this in a really dark time in my life, and the lyrics “How can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel a thing at all” brought me a point of view I desperately needed.
I base my outlook on almost everything on that sentiment now. If it means nothing, if I don’t feel anything positive, I dismiss it from my life entirely. Which is one way of interpreting the meaning here. The pointless clinging to a negative need that hurts you, and the realization to let that go for yourself.

Thank you for not reading into the lyrics too much. It's my pet peve when people go on tangents about what they think this song is about. To your point, their songs mean something different to everyone and it totally loses its luster and appeal when people try to dissect every single piece of it. Just go with it. They are the GOAT...just enjoy the magical journey you experience when listening to them. You rock , Polo!

Those "bad mic sounds" are excellent to boost your tension quickly. heh
Adam does those sounds using a metal guitar pick (I believe) scratching it against the cords around the pickups area.

Love your reacts. Basic song structure is Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-Outro or ring out. Drums and bass are referred to as the rhythm section as they usually set the foundation for the time of a song. Also, usually what you're liking is the arrangement as well as where they are setting in the mix. (the frequencies they are in as well as how forward placed or loud they are in the final version of the song)For example, some times people complain Maynard is sometimes too low in the mix. Usually when you say note, you're meaning key. Just some music jargon for ya. Keep doing you!

Dude, I am loving watching you react to Tool. Like others have said, I am a bit jealous of getting to hear them for the first time again but that is why these reactions are so great to watch. I love that you get it and are enjoying it as much as many of Tool's fans got to the first time through. I can't wait to see your reaction to Parabol/Parabola, Right In Two and Rosetta Stoned. Those are my jams.

Between the verse and chorus, Adam just rolls back his volume knob and palm mutes the notes. For the chorus it's volume up and no muting. Danny just hits the drums slightly harder with more cymbals. They're masters of variation of the same riff. Exhibit A: Jami. Learning that on guitar is an exercise in memorization.

yeah, the intro can smart a little, but it's nothing to worry about, merely danny tuning up his tablas and adam turning up his guitar. this (the video, which is an amazing piece of art in itself) was my baptism into Tool. it is truly one of their greatest, so many brilliant sections, such darkness and fragility among such power and then euphoria as the song reaches its crescendo, and not toooooo long. i'm off to listen to it again.

    you won't regret either.

It's an utter joy to watch you react to music I've loved from the time I was a kid. Sometimes Tool just finds us when we are ready and need it. Can't wait until you get through their whole discography.

Aenima was my first experience with Tool in 96 I was 14. It’s a far more digestible album in terms of song length and structure. It’s still my favorite. Now that I’m older I dig all their stuff but the long songs couldn’t keep my attention as a youth so it was aenima and A Perfect Circle for me back then. Thoroughly enjoying listening to them again for the first time with you. Keep it up.

The TooL reactions are starting to go the way of how the Harry Mack reactions started. You become aware of the fact that you want to listen to and experience all of these as quickly as you can so that you can get them into your rotation and listen to them on your own....so the videos are coming out rapid fire....and I'm here for it just like I was for the Harry Mack collection. :D

That sound you "don't like" is feedback through Adam's guitar. He's a master at controling feedback to add ambience. Adam uses an EQ and Flanger pedals. Or you can just crank up the amp and stand in front of it with the guitar but with the pedals you can really dial in the sound you want.

Danny does hit hard, but the real reason you're able to hear the drums so clearly is because he's got perfect tempo. His heads ring so clean and crisp that you hear how on-tempo he really is.
