    Over a year ago now I visited Springbank distillery in Campbeltown and brought these samples back for us both to try. We didn't mean to leave it this long but here we are finally getting to them! I think we were both quite surprised with these drams.

    Your tasting notes are so good to listen to. Wet paper towel, muddy puddle, bark under the swings when you're wee. Thank you for a good, relaxing tasting. Cheers!

    Sprinbank 15 was always in my collection, its a tragedy their supply issues have turned it into an investors flip Scotch. I do have about 2 pours of it left in fact I might finish it off. Fingers crossed things will get back to normal soon.

      I think the 15 was my favourite probably! I'm not sure if Rachel has tried it? Maybe it would change her mind about Springbank?!

    Kilchoman distillery my fav at the mo, with Sanaig my flavour of the month. I have tried the springbank 10 and 15, and nice, but hyped as you say.

    Love Springbank, always have done, love the worm tub aspect at other distilleries too.
    The distillery is a great tour for me, nice to see the in house working malting floor - Cadenhead's warehouse tasting after always a bonus ;)

    Re: infinity cask system, you could also describe it as similar to the Solera system used in Sherry.

    Fantastic video. Y'all need to make another trip to Campbeltown now, yes? Longrow Red 13 Malbec (2017/18 version?) is my favorite Springbank so far, also enjoyed two other LRs, Hazelburn 10, Springbank 10 and Springbank 12 CS. Springbank 15 was a bit of a miss for me considering price. Here in Texas in early to mid-2020 our shelves were full of Springbank bottles ... I bought three different versions of Longrow Red over a two-week span that March. Those days appear to be over. We still see some offerings but typically just Springbank 10 and Longrow's NAS version. Cheers!

    Isn't it just Springbank that's "2½" times distilled? Longrow is double distilled and Hazelburn is fully triple distilled, if I'm not mistaken.

    • @TheGrailTastings
      @TheGrailTastings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! I have reviewed the photos of the diagrams I took at the distillery and you are indeed correct. Longrow twice distilled, Springbank 2.5 times distilled and Hazelburn triple distilled. Thanks for pointing this out!

    Great video - nice tasting notes (interesting). I am definitely a Hazelburn -and Springbank fan - haven't tried Longrow - maybe it is time now :-) The hype is just a bit too much around Springbank.

  • @blackfen
    @blackfen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I reckon the hype about Springbank & Kilkerran is largely justified, with the possible exception that I don't rate Longrow 18 as highly as some folk seem to. For the same price I'd rather have a bottle each of Hazelburn 10 & standard NAS Longrow! I buy J & A Mitchell stuff when I see it online at recommended retail price or thereabouts, but that's not often these days & I'm certainly not interested in paying secondary market prices. To a certain degree I've gravitated towards getting my 'farmyard' whisky fix from Edradour in recent times because it's usually *a bit* more available. You can't go too far wrong with their 12yo Caledonia, and Ballechin 15 cask strength is incredible stuff.

    • @TheGrailTastings
      @TheGrailTastings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed - we also think that the Ardnamurchan has a wee farmy hint too!

    Haven’t had Longrow yet, it’s on my shortlist for quite a while now… so far for a shortlist. I have a Hazelburn 10 and a Springbank 10 and after half a bottle each I still don’t know what to think of Hazelburn…. it’s probably science. Love the Springbank definitely (it’s a beautiful secluded island, nothing’s like it] BUT next to those bottles stands a Kilkerran 12 and that… yes that is undeniably incredible in my book.

    I'm with Rachel. I don't understand all the Springbank hype. It's good, but is it that good? I'm not so sure. I have the 10 and 15, but always gravitate towards the Longrow. Although I will reach for my Springbanks over my Hazelburn. Hazelburn is good. I just don't reach for it over the other 2.

    Great to see your side-by-side tasting of the handfills. It reminds me of my consideration when I was sampling the handfills when I was in the SB shop last month. I gravitated towards the Longrow as it had the most interesting nose & palate, which really surprised me, as I would have thought I would be most likely going for the Hazelburn or Kilkerran. Of course, my experience would have been quite different as I was tasting them a year after your samples.
    I do love the whiskies from those distilleries but, to be honest, I'm never going to pay over RRP for them. Don't get me wrong, I do think they do deserve the hype - they're doing pretty much everything right. However, I still feel the whiskies aren't really worth losing your head/wallet over. I do intend on returning to Campbeltown one day & picking up whatever takes my fancy then. But if it's not available while I'm elsewhere, I'm not going to waste energy chasing it. There's so much more whiskies out there that's available & can stand up to the whisky from SB/Glengyle.
    On another note, Rachel, I meant to remind you a while back about the sour beer I recommended when I was in the shop with you. Check out the Tamarind & Lime Leaf Sour from Brick. A fascinating beer to sit with. Totally unusual but delicious!

      This is exactly how we feel about Springbank stuff at the moment. Great stuff but its too stressful to even thins about securing a bottle! Plenty other stuff out there to try!

    Here on the German market, you can occasionally find Springbank 10 for about €65 to €80 (double its price of just 2 years back) and Longrow Peated (NAS) for around €50 to €60, if you're lucky. In other words, they're as rare as hen's teeth, and when they do pop up they're sold out within the hour. That's not a source of fun or enjoyment in any form - so I've given up. I refuse to chase them. Luckily I can still drink from my own stash for a few years yet, due to purchases made 3 or 4 years ago when prices were sensible. As a substitute for SB 10, I'd go for Benromach 10 (even though it only has 43%) or a Glen Scotia Victoriana. As a substitute for Longrow, I'd definitely recommend the brilliant Ledaig 10, which in my opinion, is a better dram anyway, irrespective of price. Don't get me wrong - I do love Springbank products, but as long as the madness continues (not caused by the distillery I should say) I'll go a-wandering in other pastures. Cheers.

      I've just looked back at my photos of the trip after another commented pointed this out but the Hazelburn is actually fully triple distilled and it the Springbank that is 2.5 times distilled!
      I know Auchentoshan is fully three times distilled in a third dedicated still but I think they are the only ones who do this. Most other distilleries that triple distil will just reuse the spirit still/stills like Benromach. Mortlach I think is one that do a 2.81 times distilled spirit.

    Springbank's hype and FOMO come from Ralfy's and Aquavitae's Online Scotch Whiskey Awards.
    Nonetheless, here's the situation: "Hmm, this whiskey has hints of an acorn washed through a drain pipe and languished in a drainage pond. It also has overtones of rotten cabbage, Vegemite and pickled pigs' feet. I'm also tasting some reminders of wombat droppings and an old, moldy leather shoe from a boot sale that got rained on."
    Jen: "I...MUST...TRY...IT...!!!!!!!"

    • @blackfen

      Springbank / Hazelburn / Longrow core range started to get much harder to find shortly after the first covid lockdown started. Kilkerran was still available for a little longer, but then also disappeared. By the time nominations were announced for the OSWA's they were already pretty unavailable. That's almost certainly why Springbank won best distillery, but neither SB10 or KK12 got nominated.

    • @bdwilcox
      @bdwilcox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@blackfen Here by me, in the East Coast of the US, Springbank and Kilkerran were widely available until the OSWAs and then, poof, disappeared. Of late, I've started to see Campbeltown offerings creeping back onto shelves, albeit with inflated prices. I suspect that's because most of the hype has died down and people realized it's just whiskey in the bottle and not some kind of magical unicorn milk.

    OK so springbank isn't for me, love all the farmy Funk but find it too woody (a note I hate in whisky and find in most unpeated drams).
    I think longrow is underrated and I think it's because the only one available to most people is the NAS.
    The hype is due to rarity, springbank refuse to increase their output as they know it'll impact the quality, this makes it an investment opportunity and it is also a status symbol for people to show off that they can afford auction prices.
    I bought a bottle of the 10 and gave it half a bottle, now it just sits in my liqour cabinet waiting for a guest who'd like a dram

    no age statement...so you know the samples you have are very young....that probably explains why it doesnt taste like any other springbank you have tried before... the longrow had some color to it, so spent more time in the barrel....and that translates to a nicer nose and taste......great review still!
