I adore this mini-series. So incredible. I've seen it at least three times since it originally aired all the way back in '03. The music is so beautiful, and the drama is great to. It manages to combine epic war imagery, political unrest, and true love so well. And the ending. Man, I love the ending.
I am old enough and lucky enough to see the master piece of the original in 1965. I was only 10 and still loved the movie and understood it. it got me interested in the history of the Russian Revolution. I guess being raised around classical music, the score was unbelievable. Omar Shariff and Julie christy were outstanding as well as Rod Steiger. I am like most people, they should never remake the classics. They just can't compair. The only two remakes are actually ok are Sci-fi's The Time Machine and The Day the Earth Stood Still. The problem with remakes is they have to over do with special effects and the WOW factor to the movie and not what the movie is trying to really say. It actually came out the same year as The Sound Of Music. Two huge movies in the same year rarely happens. It still doesn't compair to 1939 which is considered the greatest movie year in history. I will let you look that one up.
Русский писатель Борис Пастернак, так поздно мы узнали о Докторе Живаго:-( и книгу вначале издали зарубежом и фильмы снимали... Мой любимый поэт и писатель!
Not hating on this, but the original is stellar on every level (acting, directing, scenery, music, photography). Hardly needed another version, be it a movie or a mini-series.
It's all a matter of perspective. I was born in the 90s and the way actors acted in the 60s always seems a bit unnatural to me. I actually prefer this version: the soundtrack is just as good, they changed the story a bit but that's the whole idea of an adaptation and I like what they did with it and I don't think Tonya is forgotten. When Yuri finds out she has been deported with the children, he is obviously devestated. There is such a huge time gap between the two, that it is hard to compare them.
Catherine H. You don't have to apologize for having a preference. ;) That's kind of my point. Some people prefer the first, some prefer the second and it often (not always) has something to do with the generation they are from. I'm from 1994 and I like the second version better, but it's everybody's own choice.
Catherine H. Ah, but here lies the difficulty: who decides which ones are "good" classics and which ones are "bad" movies? Not everyone will say the same thing.
Alright, if that's the criterium you want to use. All I'm saying is, that there is no one truth in this kind of discussions. It's all very subjective. You might disagree with me, but I'm not wrong to like the second version better. ;)
I was born in the 80's and I absolutely love the 60's version. I like Keira Knightley as an actress a lot, but I prefer Julie Christie in Lara's role. She's so ethereal, and so is Keira, but Julie gives me the whole feeling of a Russian Venus of another time that Keira simply doesn't. The way she looks and the way she speaks. And so does Omar Shariff, he is so imponent and sweet at the same time. I guess it has to do with taste: I prefer a certain idealization in characters, your prefer them more relatable.
I feel the same way. The 90s version feels more natural to me and the feelings of the characters come across better. Maybe it’s because the sound system got better, so ppl don’t seem like they are shouting all the time.
Whatever you want to say about the new cast, the magic in this film comes from the haunting film score of Ludovico Einaudi, with a little dark Pavel Chesnokov tossed in.
Pasternsk's novel is very harding. Lean's movie had another sence. It is auteur "Zhivago", but It is not Ideal "Zhivago" I have dream that cool russian movie will be made. But it is my dream. Russians had made TV-series of 2006 year by Aleksand Proshkin, but it is bad film
Why they feel the need to make a remake of the original is beyond me,because it never lives up to it,its like a cheap copy, you don't have the star quality or the original, the music, the cinematography, etc that made it an epic movie, you also don't get the love that Zhivago had for two women but at different degrees, here only one side of one woman is covered, his wife Tonya is mostly forgotten and with that Zhivago's divided loyalties to both women, here they are just pretty actors with somewhat limited acting ability...stop with the remakes of great movies.
It is not a remake of the David Lean movie, but an adaptation of Pasternak's novel, thirty seven years later. It is for a different generation. I love both versions on their own merit. The book came first, and both directors began with Pasternak's great literary work to create their respective versions, together with the screen writers of both versions.
If you want to watch really beautiful and true to the time, feelings/emotions version - watch the Russian one, (2005) it seem so obvious, yet everyone is going on and on around around this hollow ecranisation, full of artificial "glamour". I can not watch it, it seem too shallow to me. Might be without being truly involved into book and characters it is OK, but it is not Pasternak's soul and heart, not truth of his book. It is just... a movie.
Modern actors simply Do Not Access societal mores of the past. The Brits and Aussies approach the closest, with Italy 50's b&w like bedrock of human behavior. Consider the subtlety of Juiie Christie, born in the forties or so against this modern sex looks are the only looks acting. Modern continues to pale in comparison because of "money shots" and gratuity of every sort. Compare that to Julie Christie's knowledge of older world behaviors of women not so obvious in style. Like40's actors who began in vaudeville. Thee folks did not grow up with HVAC, tv or https and it shows in their personal ingenuity. Not the actress's fault, but the culture. There's no innocence or quick escape to rules of the time here. The tension of Limits is safe and sexy. Moderns don't get that - directors, actors, etc. New Hollywood, get here.
I agree! She’s dull and boring. Ruined every character she ever played. Nothing but a pretty face. Would be better if they hired her twin, Natalie Portman, if it was just for the face, at least she knows how to act and possess a true charisma
Keira knightly somehow manages to appear in my every single favorite movies of all times
I'm currently watching the 1965 version and only see one reason to give this version a try, the breathtakingly beautiful Keira Knightly.
You sure are a thirsty one, too bad she is too old for you now son.
Mine would be to see if they did anything differently, but keep on trying to get with her
😂😂
You can’t remake perfection , the original is like a diamond , no way can you remake that artistry
My dad still watches it every year and he likes hockey

I was a senior in high school. I saw it in a local theater a number of times.

это наш проклятый роман противоречащий русской идеи. Как для немцев "На западном фронте без перемен"
Not hating on this, but the original is stellar on every level (acting, directing, scenery, music, photography). Hardly needed another version, be it a movie or a mini-series.
the movie n life of the author of novel Boris Pasternak ...Dr.Zhivago...are equally tragic.

forever with the original one of mastero David lean
I loved the movie from the 1960's but this was also a beautiful version.

this is good but, impossible be better than 60s vesion
Yeah :) It's just so good and real. What do you think made it so good?
I think it’s better.
@@kmm2442 Omar shérif make it so good!
Love this series
i haven't seen the 60s version yet but i did love this one and that piece of music makes me cry every time
i want to watch but am nt sure which one to watch
Outstanding trailer and movie 🙄🙄🙄🙄
They remade Dr. Zhivago? WHY?
Omar Sharif and Julie Christie are immortal in roles dr.Zhivago & Lara
where can i watch it?
I just don't understand the idea behind remakes, especially with classics.
DISCO-INFERNO-70 take a great movie, cast a minimally talented actress who flashes her titties and a pretty boy who can't act. WHY????
It isn't a remake.

A masterpiece, much better than the original.

Trash. The original is gorgeous perfect art
Sorry Keira Knightley for me is the same in everything she does hopelessly limited in her acting ability
