No, I did not remove the retaining ring before removing the ccv joint . In these ccv joints it is not possible to remove the ring, so when a new one comes or in the bellows a new ring usually comes in.
I see, nice idea for a dedicated puller. I just tapped it off with a drift and 3 lb sledge. 3 hits and it came right off. That is on a 1996 Isuzu Trooper outer CV joint. This only works on the round profile rings. Other square shaped rings, access is granted where ball carrier meets shaft where you can reach with the plier type tool where shaft enters ball carrier.

I just replace the entire axle changing the boots ended in the 80's if done correctly dollar for dollar it cost more to replace the boots than it does to just replace the complete axle assembly
Yes it is true . But if it doesn't tighten on the transmission shaft, you'll need to get a new CV joint. That's why you can remove it with a hammer and it won't damage any more than it already has.
How often is the thread damaged when you are going to change the CV joint? Almost never. If the thread is damaged you have to replace the axle and no need to replace the joint on it. Stupid comment
@peterboden6130 wrong. I damaged my thread whilst trying to remove the axle over zelously, so I just cut the CV joint off with a grinder and replaced it... do you realise that outer and some inner CV joints are pretty common for most cars and pretty cheap too? New axles for my bmw were going to cost £1000 per axle new and I got a CV kit for £50.... not saying that the threads are damaged when you get to them, but sometimes they end up damaged when you are trying to remove the axle from hub assembly!! My friend who's a mechanic has done it quite a few times over the years he said, even screwing the nut on the end before hitting and using copper hammers or bits of wood, they still seem to knurle the threads!! So my comment isn't as daft as you think! P.S I have this exact tool and it doesn't even work for removing CV joints. Realistically what happens is the circlip is in that tight that when you try tightening this up it will just slide down the axle shaft no matter how tight you clamp it! Again, ask me how it know!! If you're doing CV joints the simplest way by far that saves hours of time ie using a dremil with mini grinder disc. Cut the boot off. Wipe out the grease. Spray brake clean for rest. Pull it all way down to show the bearing race. Cut between the balls of the race on 3 of them. Takes seconds. Then the full CV drops off. Then you can carefully cut to rest of it that's still stuck on the shaft with the circlip cause there no chance your pulling the full CV off intact with one of these pullers!! They just slide! The clips are under far too much tension unless the off-chance you get lucky and have a weak clip!! But chances are youl use this thing then realise how much of a piece of junk it is and then resort to cutting the CV off whilst the axles are still on the car!! Done it millions of times and it never fails!! Can do the CV's in 30 mins. Quicker than even removing the axles from a car and then changing the gearbox fluid too!!

If I'm going to go that far I just replace the whole axle. So much faster, so much easier. Also, cheap repair.
This type of service of just replacing the bellows is much cheaper, and if the rest of the transmission is good, why replace everything?
The thing is, here in Brazil the whole axle assembly is really expensive in most cases.
Aqui no Brasil , produtos industrializados , são muito caro, e a mão de obra barata, compensa trocar somente a ponta.
Mas EA trava, não vai tirar?, tem que mostrar isso,se não tem gente que acha que vai sacar sem tirar as travas.
It won't always work. I have one and it worked once only. The soconf time I used it it slipped and didnt help with anything.
