This is the most modern and forward thinking acoustic jazz quartet on the planet. They make me feel like a kid hearing Jazz for the first time, and wondering, "How do they play music like that?!" And I've been a working professional musician for close to 40yrs. Their mastery of improvisation is simply awe inspiring.
Ditto. Just no idea what they’re doing, whether it’s free or whether they have some loose structure at times. There are a couple of pieces they play where you can follow it all the way through but so many bits where I’m just huhhhhhhh
Aye, and while we all know that 'best' is kind of meaningless just like infinity or eternity, etc., he reminds me of what Wayne Shorter said about Lester Young, noting that it wasn't that Lester was so amazingly this or that above the rest of the pack, it was that "he got more into what the music is ABOUT". That's how Blade feels to me. Yes, his technique is beyond comprehension and his time tighter than a pinhead's toupee, but he uses them to get into everything the music is about, with Blade's special emphasis on timbre. He gets more "drummy" sounds from his drums than any drummer I've heard. He hardly even has a "style" other than vast array of styles that aren't even styles, more like moods, and maybe his unique way of hunkering down in dialog between his hi-hat and snare. Like another jazz legend wrote in a song about Lester, "Lester Young is playing what he's feeling."
The most creative and inventive saxophonist alive today. The band is exhilarating. This performance is masterful and breathtaking. Pure genius and futuristic.
Just heard of Wayne’s passing and feeling the loss of another master musician. This guy’s music was an early wake up call for me in life to the power of jazz, the strength of an individual voice, and the mystery of art. The man is now at one with the universal sound and spirit. Thank you Mr Shorter!
i saw them play at oberlin college in 2006. they played a chapel building... i was up in the balcony directly above the piano stage right... the best jazz I have ever seen played live.
I'm a professional musician and teacher. I have no idea what the hell is going on here. It's absolutely nuts. But it sure is fun!! Phenomenal musicianship!
I saw this quartet perform at Yoshi's--I guess it must have been around this same year. It took almost an hour for me to wrap my brain around what they were doing. It's definitely not the Wayne Shorter quartet of the '60s. But that's the nature of great artists, great composers and improvisers. And Shorter is my absolute favorite. It takes jazz to a new place without losing its foothold in the tradition or spirit of the past.
Otherworldy is the word. My deepest respect for Wayne Shorter, RIP, after years of listening to him and playing his songs, and especially after learning his story. And Brian Blades! Watching Brian play the tune is the most perfect expression of the way I feel inside when I listen to this perfectly realized jazz...deep inside me is a mini-Brian shouting and lunging and exploding to swirl of musical tension.
Watched a documentary on Wayne Shorter recently, it was nice to be able to see the man behind the music that I hear played on our local jazz station. Great behinds the scenes look especially his relationship with his brother and how that influenced Waynes view of the world and his music.
This must be some of the best footage in jazz ever - Thank you so much for that, this is simply amazingly great stuff. Some of the best musicians produce some of the finest music and the respect and love those three young giants pay to Wayne shows us how happy life can be.
from 6:00 - 7:00 thats just sick! i have seldom seen such brilliant interplay, brian blade is truly one of the greatest drummers in history of jazz. the entire group is more than amazing, such a incredible joy listening to them :)
There’s absolutely no reason for 20 dislikes if you came to this video or site because maybe you’re a jazz enthusiast🤔 You can’t find anything you like by none of the musicians notwithstanding Brian Blades on drums then perhaps you shouldn’t have came here😠 Enjoy your lives peoples’ and most of all be safe during this pandemic🎶😷🦠
I don't understand why nobody has said anything about the sound of the Bass in this video. Someone needs to contact the original producers of this video and inform them that the sub-frequencies of this video are out of phase. Its such a shame..... video is so well produced. This would be my favorite youtube video of all time if you could actually hear the bass at a level it is intended to be heard. How has there not been a riot to re-release this video with an appropriate mix? Its quite depressing. Seriously, why has nobody said anything about this?
You know it was an electronic music festival so bass frequencies aren't that important to them I guess... But seriously the mix sounds pretty good except I wish the drums weren't so loud/everything else was so quiet. Hard to get it to a good level where I can hear the piano solo without blasting out my eardrums every time he hits a floor tom.
Recording live is not easy. There is quite a bit of bleed from drums into the other mics. It means they can't turn the piano up more than it is without getting more drums. without baffling there's no way to get enough separation with the mics to make it fit. Did you check the recording with a phase meter? The shift you may be getting is likely bleed from the bass amp into the drum/piano mics. The engineer tries to compensate for these things, but in the end you get what you get. A jazz group will always play physically close to each other and baffles are a buzz kill live. Likewise amplification muddies things.
Somehow this precise quartet is very important in jazz and music history. It brings back the classic knowledge, traditional soul, experimental courage, the ACOUSTIC master and purity coming back from any electr(on)ic devices, the wisdom in « free » to reach collective consciousness in simple « popular » evidence... This is both antique and futuristic, this is kind of prophetic sincerity in any and every direction. I wish could be more influential, mainstream is really going creepy ...
Fantastic recording and performance, such crisp HD on stage in the action, great rhythm section interplay, laid back Wayne Shorter, until the end. Please identify the other band members...
My experience studying with him confirms this. He was generous with all of his character and attention. Not to mention, he was more than happy to make us some espresso before lessons!
I am so new to this sound, were they like testing something out, each other? So strange , I love how it sounds somewhat like exploring a cave, the deeper they go in , they become more brave.
R.I.P. Legend
Dear Wayne, you were the one who inspired me to become a musician and a saxophone player. Thanks for everything. May you forever be at peace.

Concordo ! Shorter ha aperto la strada x i prossimi 50 anni!
Thank you again for sharing this... Rest in peace, Wayne.
Brian Blade is the best living drummer for me, period

This is literally the most amazing musical group I’ve ever seen in my entire life...

it's like Wayne is just babysitting his three kids
This isn't music it's a miracle.
They're having such a nice time

Long live Wayne!
+OldVillain indeed
Rest In Peace Maestro 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I saw this group in Miami Beach around the time of this concert. It was a spiritual experience.
6:28 In this moment, when i was 19 years old, i fell in love with jazz. I cant even describe my feelings at the time, it was magical.
It truly is an epic moment!!! So much raw power, mastery and joy! Truly being the best versions of themselves.

Thank you for all the great music, Wayne!! RIP.
No words for Brian Blade. Nothing short of excellence from this quartet. Great upload!
We just lost a true master in music. I first heard your mysterious travels with Weather Report in 1974, when I was only 14. RIP Maestro Shorter.
웨인쇼터선생님!!! 정말 멋져요!!! 감사합니다!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤;;;
I love Brian's explosiveness
+I Know Jazz

Absolutely perfect playing from all of them, but man, Brian’s drumming was just insane. And his kit sounds sooooo good.
This must be some of the best footage in jazz ever - Thank you so much for that, this is simply amazingly great stuff.

I know what you mean, but lets forget about living legend and just listen. This Shorter's quartet is today one of the best jazz bands
Minutes: 7:40-7:59Danilo plays in the heaven 🙃👌
Brian Blade is a god.
Brian Blade in this group is what Elvin Jones was to John Coltrane.
Blade especially made this enjoyable! Much to be said for the drummer
This is simply on an other Level! Long live the Night Dreamer!
I've heard these pieces for years now and they always get me going. This particular video has all of them in great form...love it!
Got to see this group............stoned.
Major Mazzaroth my jealousy cannot be put into words
Mágico este muchacho, además, encanta todo lo que tiene a su alrededor...!
OMG!!! Brain Blade at the 6:28 mark!!

Wayne's like a father who plays with his children.😹
Perfect way to describe it
But also can sound like an infant just discovering the beauty of sound

BytrStudios I heard him quote orbits at the end of the first tune. not too quiet.
Yeah, it's quite strange to see him so ecstatic, but not hear him.

Ya I was thinking the same thing.
It sounded pretty good in the second tune though.

Otra dimensión, descansa en paz maestro
No mega drum-kit with a hundred different varieties, just minimal equipment and a bucket load of talent.
RIP Wayne Shorter.
Blown away! wish the bass was up a little in the mix

The look Shorter gives that rhythm section at 6:05 is priceless.
Brian Blade on drums, John Patitucci on Bass and Danilo Pérez (piano)
Patitucci looks so kind, always :)
