Kinamincho is the Mozart of the 21st century. She is able to put down on paper all the intricate details of what each instrument should sound like effortlessly. She has the confidence in her bandmates to put their own personalities into each note. She understands that silence is just as important as sound within a song. It's just magic !

The lead guitarist is Kanami Tōno, and she started playing piano very young (like three, if memory serves). She writes most of their music, with contributions from everyone. They are all so musical. MISA is the bassist, and I would consider her one of the best in the world. She is not flashy in the way Jaco Pastorius or Bootsy Collins or Les Claypool or Flea, but exceedingly lyrical and expressive, and continually innovative. The same goes for Akane Hirose on drums. Keep listening to this song and you'll continue to find interesting things in it. It's uncanny.

Name me a band that has released an MV without their vocalist and you don't even feel that something is missing... Which doesn't mean that Saiki isn't needed or missed. She is a pillar as strong as any of these ladies in the B-M construct. But damn, even 4/5 of this band can leave others out in the rain. 🔥🤘🏻
Wouldn't be a bad idea to go back to the beginnings of this interesting band history, and the song that saved this band from being broken up by their management at the time after it went viral here on YT after a page on FB posted it. Their first MV titled 'Thrill'. The ladies were so surprised by the number of views within a few weeks that at first they thought their account had been hacked. 🤭

Hi NittPicc! Saiki the lead singer has had throat surgery in the past so the band are very careful with her voice. They play 2+ hour sets so to give Saiki a break around mid-set they do three things. 1. Play an instrumental, 2. Miku (rhythm guitar) takes lead vocals for a song or two (she usually has one track per album where she is lead vocalist) and 3. Miku will do her legendary and hilarious "Magic Time" MC set. Then Saiki comes back on to finish the set. Even though Saiki no longer needs a break nowadays, it's become more of a tradition. So yeah, they have a number of really cool instrumental tracks. Check out the live MV of "Onset" for another instrumental banger!
Kanami (lead guitar) is the main composer, and she composes on piano. She writes the backing track music too, sometimes it is orchestral. When they play live they still use the backing track and it sounds awesome!

The thing that makes Band Maid truly unique is that each one of the maids is absolutely insanely talented, but none of them try to take the spotlight over each other. Each of them are total and absolute badasses in their roles within the band. And none of them have a typical "rock star ego" about them....they are all just so humble about it!
The drummer, Akane, once said it best about what makes Band Maid so effective: "We all decided to make this kind of music together. If one of us suddenly decided to do something else, it wouldn't work."

From Now On is Kanami's skill demonstration and with the band's arrangement accompanying her as she goes through the emotional technicality is what makes this a masterpiece. It's like concertos from classical music. This time, it's a hard rock progressive guitar concerto. ^^

Open shot “how to look badass wearing maid outfits” lol. The “one finger” chromatic part is not as simple as it looks it’s a bit buried in the mix but if you look at Kanami right hand she’s also playing an open string alternating. This is a common technique for her. You will also find out that Kanami LOVES playing with time in compositions. Another instrumental Onset has a number of quick time changes just to make you think “wait what was that” lol which happens a lot to musicians listening to BandMaid. They are “sneaky progressive”.

gone to see our girls play live and let me tell you ...they are the real deal. The musicianship is second to none....these are well trained
musicians that have been playing together for 10 year perfecting their craft. Then throw in that Kanami (lead guitar) writes all their songs
with input from Misa (bass) and Akane (drums my fav lol) just blows me away. Miku the(rhythm guitar) writes the lyrics with input from
Saki (lead vocal) makes this band so special. I would luv to hear you review PLAY LIVE. but really any song is great from them.

Great remarks. The lead guitar, bass, and drummer all started on piano at an early age. The drummer and bass played other instruments before choosing their current instruments. The lead guitar did not pick up a guitar until high school. The lead guitar, Kanami, composes all their music on a keyboard. Rough drafts are sent to the other members. They are expected to refine their own sections, bass, drums, vocals. The vocal lines of the two singers are awesome. Pick anything for your next Band Maid song. They will amaze you.

I know, it's Krazy to think that although Misa, Akane and Kanami are all heavily musically inclined from a young age, none of them started playing their final form instruments until highschool, somewhere between the ages of 15 - 17 yrs old.
With the Band just finishing up 10 years together and everyone being about 30 (except Saiki who's a year younger) That means they've only been playing their instruments for about 13 years on average. When you see how skilled they are within that time it seems extra Krazy.

@@Studio-Coast_KidDid anyone mention that Miku, 2nd vocals and rhythm guitarists could not play guitar at the start? Some one suggested it would look better if there was another guitar on stage. Saiki said NO, I am the singer. So Miku stepped up, learned how to play, taught by Kanami. And then during Covid lockdown, Saiki decided to learn both guitar and piano. That culminated in Saiki singing and playing solo piano at their 10th anniversary concert last November.

I saw Band-Maid perform "From Now On" at St Andrews Hall in Detroit last May. They sound exactly like this live. - they're that exacting. They don't release songs they can't perform live. Band-Maid fans had 'fan-cam'd' all the prior tour shows and I knew to expect the orchestral backing track. The Band Maid members all contribute to each song's backing track, adding orchestral synth, bass pedal, tympany, electronic drum, distorted vocals, and Band-Maid's 'sing-alongs' to beef up and encourage the audience when appropriate. It augments their live performance, it never overshadows their live play. At the Detroit Okyu-ji, I was about three rows back from Kanami and I can verify that she is playing LIVE and that she is an awesome player, often improvising on the fly. Misa never seems to miss a note, totally immersed in stone faced concentration, but if you watch carefully you'll catch her mischievous smile. Akane too is always on beat, perfection, but half the time she's got that big smile on her face or is singing along even though she isn't mic'd.
And then Miku and Saiki are out front singing as God intended: sans AutoTune!

The important thing to know as a classical musician about bandmaid is that each song starts as a basic score written by kanami. Generally starting in her head and developing far before she touches an instrument, then it gets shared around the band for their contributions that too get scored. Kanami also writes the second guitar part and miku learns it from the score, she is the only one not classically trained. Even Akane the drummer sees the score in her minds eye as she performs and alters the score if she wishes to make changes before a performance. This enables them to deliver a long and hectic performance 44 times a year changing the set list every time. Last year they chose from 77 different songs.
All the instrumentals have names jesting with the idea that saiki is taking a pee.
This one was composed especially to open in front of audiences who might not know them at a festival or as a support act, lest anyone have any illusion that they are anything but very serious musicians. "From now on" you're going to pin back your ears.
It has since taken its place as a pee track too.
So basically they're a chamber quartet who happen to play very hard rock music that they compose themselves according to the rules of musicology but play on the day as if it was written by a third party.
This makes them very relaxed and focused for the at least two and a half hours they play, even after three and a half they show few signs of fatigue or loss of concentration.
They're just following the set list and the score (and the metronome in the drummer's ear). People may say "this isn't rock".
Duke Ellington worked in a similar way, no improvisation. Nobody says his band were not Jazz.
This is also why they have that incredible tightness and precision, like the Glen Miller band, absolutely in the pocket.

One Hallmark of their music is constant variety. That's why as a musician you just don't get tired of listening to a song because you'll always hear something you haven't heard before and they never do the same thing for more than four measures. And the more you listen to them the more you'll like them and the more you'll find out that they make you happy every time you hear them. Then after about 30 songs the sheer awe of their songwriting and arranging will hit you. Yes you will still have 90 plus songs to go and there are no duds. I mean Lennon and McCartney have nothing on these ladies for songwriting. The fact that some people can't get past the language barrier is almost criminal.

I can petite Kanami "The Wonderful Little Genius". She (and the rest of the band) are incredible musicians. Since Saiki, the lead vocalist did not perform on "From Now On", I hope you will react to her vocal range with "Puzzle", the official live video from their Tokyo Garden concert this past year. This was the song that threw me over the edge into full blown Maidiac.
Congrats on being anointed as a princess so early in your Band Maid journey!
Kanami is a classically trained pianist; she writes songs from that perspective. The chromatic note choices you noticed are inspired by an opera.
She also writes and records the backing tracks and the Maids use them in their live shows.
Kanami-san, the rock goddess in sensible shoes!
Live is where they truly shine. I would like to recommend two for you to consider:
“Play,” official live. Originally written as a funky rock instrumental, but Saiki (vocals) liked so much that she demanded lyrics! Miku (🌹) is the principal lyricist and this is the final product.
The second? You probably won’t see anyone else recommending this, but if you took a fan poll? It would be top ten for almost everyone. “Moratorium,” live @Zepp Tokyo 2018. It’s special.
Many fans will, however, recommend “DICE/Hate?” from Lollapalooza. I’m not one of them because “DICE” needs to be seen as the official music video first. That, and the camera work is terrible. Solos will be heard and the cameraman is off doing something else. The final rub is the sound mix is less than the Maids deserve. If you do choose to watch the video, please keep all these flaws in mind. ❤

You are correct about the underlying melodies. Band maid uses backing tracks to fill out the parts that they cannot play on stage live. However, unlike a great many groups, ALL of the backing track music and vocals are performed by the members themselves. They simply don't want the music to suffer just because they don't have enough hands to play it all live. Also, their songwriting (Kanami, Lead Guitar is the main songwriter and Miku, Rythum Guitar and Backing vocals is the main Lyricist) is INSANE!

Kanami is the master in the synth/piano layering. Now, I think you should try a better band than these guys. They are called Band Maiko, and react to "Secret Maiko Lips" (a Band Maid cover of "Secret My lips"). You will hear Kanoemi (lead G and main composer) at her master layering best, Po! The band is better live than in music videos. I grew up in the ‘70s so I’ve been to a lot of concerts. Nothing is comparable to a BAND-MAID ‘okyu-ji.’ If you are in the mood to be blown away try, “Dice/Hate,” from Lollapalooza 2023. It’s 2 songs bridged together by Akane. During ‘Hate,’ Misa and Kanami have a back and forth section followed by Kanami’s solo. Watch Saiki in the background, smiling while the bass and guitar conversation is taking place. This band is very important to music in general and rock-n-roll specifically.

I hope you enjoy making these, cause you're really good at it. It'll come as no surprise that the lead guitar is the songwriter and music leader. She's also a keyboard player and self taught engineer/editor so she creates the backing tracks and mixes the demos before the studio. She gets max input from the bassist and drummer who rewrite her placeholder bass and drum parts, and send them back to her as data files. And you are so right. Singing is a much better description than shredding for the lead guitar and bass playing. There are tons of players with more technical chops, but the lead guitar, drummer and bass player ooze musicality out of their pores. Take a listen to Corallium Live at Shibuya Eggman and Black Hole Official Live Video (its the second song in a two song video with Manners). You'll be blown away again.

I didn't read all comments so maybe this was explained before: "Welcome home, masters and princesses" is a very common Band Maid greeting at the beginning of a concert. So we MAIDIACS sometimes do the same for someone like you, who is entering the world of Band Maid. ... I hope I didn't destroy the magic behind that "phrase" ... it is all about magic 😅
Band Maid uses some typical wording and acting from the Maid Cafe culture in Japan: They call their concerts "OKYU-JI" (Serving) and their audience "Masters and Princesses". And Miku (founder, rythm guitarist, lyricist) casts a kind of magical spell (Omajinai-Time) during a short break 🪄. It's a comedic and entertaining interlude where sometimes all Band Members are involved. Each Omajinai-Time is different. You have to watch some of those amateur live videos, too :-)
👉I have a public playlist with special videos with Band Maid, if you are interested.
The music is fantastic, but the personalities and stories make the difference (🕊just get to know Miku better, then you'll understand 🕊). You may also find some interesting interviews out there (from "gold rush" for example). And of course Ohrenje's wonderful documentaries, all of which he wants to revise again this year... even though they're already so great.
I myself am one of those who really don't need the Maid image here, but Band Maid makes something of it. And I have to say that their latest dresses that they introduced in fall/autumn are really great. 💃

When I first listened to this masterpiece, I thought Kanami had written a classical concerto and arranged it into a heavy rock version. Misa's bass solo in this particular song is so soothing and tasty, providing a calm moment when the others are going crazy.
To be honest, I don't usually say this because I don't want to offend the fans of the other bands, but since I discovered Band-Maid, no other band has sounded as interesting as they do. The last time I felt this excitement was almost 40 years ago when I was a teenager discovering all the legendary rock bands of the late 60's and 70's.

You can absolutely call yourself a Band Maiden! The more common term is Maidiac, but I gotta admit that has a good ring to it. The band themselves refer to their fans as Masters and Princesses as per Maid Cafe tradition.
As a person that appreciates a variety of instruments, I think you’d very much enjoy Secret My Lips followed by Secret Maiko Lips.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this song performed live four times with this MV quality in Japan and dropped my jaw four times 😲. I believe so did many of American audience in their recent three US tours. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki, lead vocalist, some break. They played this song, however, as opening at festivals and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!" 😄
Band-Maid did not play this song in the final concert of 2022 US Tour in Chicago. In an interview Kanami explained the reason saying "From Now On requires a lot of adrenaline to play, but I was a bit anemic that day. I would have passed out if we did it". [source : Japanese magazine "PMC vol.25" page 100] .... I don't blame you, Kanami 💛。Then B-M played "From Now On" as 21st in the total 26-song setlist at Tokyo Garden Theater on Jan.9 last year. If Kanami is in good shape, her adrenaline is inexhaustible 😍

It is so wonderful that you are still at the very beginning of a great journey that most of us already enjoyed so much. 🎶 During your second reaction so many other recommendations came into my mind .... But you will hopefully listen to all of them, eventually: "Freedom" for a great chorus, a drum solo and fun live performance. "Play live" for real instrumental power including Saiki and Miku interacting with the crowd, "Manners, Blackhole" for a double feature that shows two (of many) very different sides of band maid, "Corallium" for so many layers and changes during one song, "Onset" ... another instrumental, "Carthasis Acoustic" for a wonderful acoustic setting where you can enjoy each member, ... and so many more
    Go on and enjoy:
Saiki's singing, Kanami's compositions and lead guitar work, Misa's wonderful bass lines (that bass tone!!!), Akane's driving drum fills and emotions behind the drums and finally my personal highlight when Miku (rhythm guitar, vocal, lyrics, Omajinai time) completes the songs with her voice, po 🕊️
But let me make one final statement: You have a great feel for music and see so much more in the songs than many of us do when we first hear them: it's great to be able to go on this journey with you again 👸🏼

Hi! I love your Band-Maid reactions. It's always fun to see that amazement combined with curiosity, and a little disbelief that I also felt when I discovered this band. It's ok if you want to call yourself a fan. As you've noticed with the Band-Maid community, it's very welcoming. There's no gatekeeping with this band and new fans are celebrated rather than ridiculed. As you listen to more songs, you will continue to be surprised. Discovering this band has been as fun a musical journey as I can remember.
These ladies are not only next level players individually, they all manage to do the individual shining in a way that still makes the song better. None of their parts ever seem excessive or unnecessary. Also, with the songs that you've heard and will hear, notice how the second verse is NEVER played the same way as the first. There is always some sort of variation. They NEVER just cut and paste repeat anything. They throw all kinds of other little musical trinkets in their songs that you might only catch the 20th time you listen, even with a musician's ears. Kanami (lead guitar) is the principal songwriter and arranger, and in my opinion, she is a genius in the literal sense of the word. Her arrangements walk the line between catchy and straight up progressive in a manner that manages to appeal to lovers of both without alienating either. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that quite like she does. Miku (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) writes most of the lyrics and vocal melodies to go with Kanami's Instrumentation. Miku also started the band.
I heard in your "Domination" reaction that you like anime. With that in mind, I would def recommend "Unleash". That video is mostly anime. It's really well done too. Then again, everything these ladies do is at bare minimum well done. This is one of those bands that you remember the time and place that you were at when you first saw or heard them.
    Cheers NittPicc!

I started listening to Band Maid in 2015, and became a full-blown Maidiac in the summer of 2017. They've had four U.S. tours (the last was a two-pronged attack), and I've seen them live on each tour. I've been to two meet-and-greets (back when they still had them). I have a room (and attached bathroom) with the walls and doors covered in (mostly)* Band Maid merchandise and photos (which draw comments from my wife such as "This is an embarassment"; "Grow-up, fool!"; "How much money have you thrown-away on this band?"). {Picture the scene in "Seinfeld" where Jerry is discussing the weight of a fellow subway passenger: the passenger says, "I'm not embarrassed", to which Jerry responds "That's the problem -- you should be"}. How can money and time spent on Band Maid be any form of waste? *There's also material from kindred Japanese all-female rock and metal bands: Lovebites, Nemophila, Hanabie, Aldious, Telecide, Mary's Blood, Disqualia, Fate Gear, Galmet, Lonesome Blue, Passcode, Destrose, and others (but most of the stuff is Band Maid-related. You mentioned about seeing this song live ... I can assure you, they play note for note live.
Whatever they do in the studio, they take to the stage.
While you're doing the instrumental, you might want to continue on with another ... "Onset" live (on their TH-cam channel) ... just awesome. Oh, and if you do, keep an eye on Misa (the Bassist) when she does her solo. She switches from plucking to slapping flawlessly. Brilliant musicians.
Long long way to go ... and you won't find a bad one.

They use backing tracks on a lot of stuff. Want to know what I like about Band-Maid? Wait, no, wrong... Want to know many things I LOVE about Band-Maid? They can do anything. They once did an April Fools Joke called Band-Maiko that turned into a whole album. They did an acoustic Christmas concert that was unforgettable. Sometimes MISA (bassist) plays lead! Saiki did a piano solo! They are hard rock/pop/punk/pop punk/prog/metal/alt with jazz and blues thrown in to spice it up. If you listen to a song multiple times you will pick up something new every time. Enjoy them as a rocker, or enjoy them as a teacher. They're so good. That's why we're Madiacs!

Great reaction subbed. I was just lost when I reacted to this honestly. Just kicked my ass with complexity almost but I did pick up the lyrical tone off Kanamis lead guitar.

In 2016, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin caught a performance of Band-Maid in Tokyo and asked for a photo-op with their drummer, Akane Hirose. Akane thought that she was being prank...can look up the photo of Page and Akane.

Mozart never composed better pieces for quartets and quintets than Kanami-sama composes for either 4 or 5 members of Band-Maid. A true genius. Her arrangements of 14 well-known Band-Maid songs for their acoustic gig was masterful. Kanami has an angelic voice but you'll have to hunt down the performance of just her and Saiki and an acoustic guitar to hear it. There are some great live cams of them performing this song, from their recent tour.

I get choked up every time I watch From Now On. Even though I know what is coming i still get choked up. I think you put it best, "...so much epicness."
Again, great video. Your reactions are honest and cute, and great musical analysis.

Saw this live at Aftershock in 2022. They opened their set with it and it was GLORIOUS! I need to get to a full concert one day. A 30 min set was not long enough..

Great tune. Now if you want a great demonstration of Saiki singing, "Puzzle acoustic live".
