Kanami took up guitar for the same reason many men do Impress the girls. Only band where the lead singer fired her self and hired someone else so the band could be better and then learned to play guitar to go with backing vocals.

NitPicc welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

When someone reacting to Band Maid for the first time hears the mini breakdown after the first chorus and is blown away I just lean back, put my feet up and wait for the full breakdown.
    Awesome reaction!
Welcome to Band Maid! This is the best hard rock band on the planet (in my humble opinion anyway). They have 10 years of incredible music, which is 120+ songs. They're all good. All of them. Most are fantastic. It's unbelievable. I think you'll enjoy going down the pigeon hole and discovering so much more.
You watch a lot of Anime, they've done songs for a few intros/outros.
Check out: Sense, Shambles, or Different for their anime stuff.
They also do pure intrumentals which you may appreciate as a musician, so check out: From Now On, Onset, and Without Holding Back
You seemed to really like Saiki's singing, for more stuff with that I'd recommend Wonderland, Daydreaming, and Puzzle (accoustic) (or really any of their acoustic stuff if you want, it's beautiful, yeah, they can do everything, it's nuts)
You're about to get a lot of Madiacs explaining the members and history and recommending things from what we all think is a very special band.

Since this is a new reaction channel, if you want some other bands to react to as well, the two I recommend are The Warning, another great rock band formed by a trio of sisters from Mexico. Evolve is a good place to start for them
Back to Japan, a group called Hanabie is a crazy metal band of girls from Japan who is more screamy than I usually like, but I find them so entertaining that it works for me. Pardon Me I a Have to Go Now is probably a decent place to start.

Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume? MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
Interviewer: What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”? Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
Interviewer: How did BAND-MAID come together? Did any of you know each other before joining the band? Kanami: Miku was looking for members to be in BAND-MAID. I was approached to join the band, and then I brought my friend, the drummer Akane, with me. Then, Akane brought her friend, the bassist Misa. So the instrumental performers were all gathered through connections between musicians. After that, our vocalist Saiki joined through an audition.

Welcome to Band-Maid and welcome to Japan, the new frontier of rock and metal, and it's pretty much all female lead. Band-Maid are part of what I consider the big 4. Band-Maid, Babymetal, Lovebites, and Nemophila. If you want to see more of Saiki (the lead singer) emotional voice check out the live video of Puzzle from the Tokyo garden theater. Her voice truly tells the story of the song and Kamani (the lead guitar) also puts her soul into that guitar part. Both of them together, really all of them, give that song such a strong feeling.

Welcome aboard, NittPicc. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 190 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): th-cam.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/w-d-xo.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” th-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/w-d-xo.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html

 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
 “P and D⁴” Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinDakaPanic810
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: th-cam.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/w-d-xo.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: th-cam.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/w-d-xo.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21!
The Maids are one of the hardest working super groups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids, and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE!

Great reaction, NP, you picked up on all the elements of Band-Maid that make it such a great band. Kanami (Ka-nah-me), besides being a great guitarist, is also IMHO one of the greatest rock songwriters composing today. The lead singer, Saiki (Sigh-key), is an amazing singer with a stage presence to match. The rhythm guitarist/backup vocalist is Miku (Mee-koo), and she also writes most of the lyrics. Then you have one of the greatest rhythm sections in all of hard rock: Misa (Mee-sah) on bass and Akane (Ah-kah-nay) on drums. Band-Maid has a very diverse catalog, incorporating lots of styles, but their core sound is hard rock. Examples of songs on their channel: harder stuff: Shambles, Warning, Blooming, etc.; ballads: Daydreaming and endless story; a two-fer live video, showing bluesy and progressive: Manners and Black Hole. You like Japanese culture? Try their alter-ego band, Band-Maiko, e.g. Gion-Cho.

Bad musicians make easy songs seem difficult.
Ordinary musicians just make difficult songs sound difficult as they are.
Only a really limited number of great musicians can make difficult songs sound easy.
In BAND-MAID's recent works in particular, each of the members play extremely skillful, and (seemingly) free solos at the same time throughout the entire songs, and they intertwine with each other in a complex and multi-layered way to form a single brilliant piece of music, yet it is really catchy and easy to listen to.
It is as if Stravinsky's originality and R. Strauss's brilliant orchestration were wrapped with Mozart's depth and simplicity.

Great respect for them as they keep the flame of Rock lit; I will always preach the gospel of Band Maid. I greatly respect your music theory knowledge and the fact that you appreciate and admire this song lends great credence to this band's amazingness.

I understand. For me, having seen BAND-MAID twice in the past 15 months and by grading their highly entertaining, high energy live performances, songwriting abilities, instrumental virtuosity, large catalog of terrific music, and their ability to mix in pop, punk, metal, etc. into their unique sound, imho, makes them the best overall band.

Yes, that is a good suggestion for the next song. Then maybe "Play Live". Later then the faster and harder songs or their ballads or instrumentals or acoustic performances, listen to Miku singing and some "Band Maiko" ... So much to hear, so much to see...
Nevertheless: you can pick really any song.

Welcome to the world of Japanese rock and metal! What makes these ladies special (and others like them) is that they have not abandoned their femininity in order to play this genre of music. In most of the world, women in rock are really just imitating what the men do...not so in Japan. The female rock and metal groups in Japan are doing their own thing, fully embracing their femininity and doing it while melting faces! It makes for an amazing contrast to what we in the West are accustomed to seeing. Feminine, girly-girl women kicking @$$ and taking names. They are every bit if not more talented than most all male bands are. Goes to show what can be accomplished when you are not competing with men and are doing your own thing. As an old metal head, I fully support all the Japanese all female rock and metal bands. They are a breath of fresh air in a genre that has been on life support for decades.

I highly , highly recoomend BUBBLE 8 for the vibe and a good showcase), WARNING ( for driving- no pun- and thrilling blast), CORALLIUM or BLACK HOLE ( for progressive elements and rocking out- might take a few listens to pick all the subtle stuff they put in there out^^) and last but not least SENSE or SHAMBLES ( both anime tracks- like legit used fot the anime ). By faaaaaaaaar not all their bangers , they have 120+ songs and not a single dud in there.

These 5 young Ladies remind us old heads of the music of our youth, in a good way. And for many of us they are their generations version of those great bands.
And MISA the bassist, can play with multiple styles without ever dropping her pick. She can go from pick to slap, and back to pick in half a beat or less, and she does it many times during most of the songs.
And if you want more to the file about the Ladies, please don't hesitate to ask.

BAND-MAID is a five-member girls rock band. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary last year. The members have not changed. They are a hard rock band and fans consider them one of the best hard rock bands in the world. They usually have 20 songs and 2 hour gig. Formed in Japan in 2013, led by side guitarist Miku Kobato. Kobato has experience working at a maid cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo, and came up with the idea of playing cool music in her maid outfit. That's why the band was named BAND-MAID. "Thrill" was the first music video of 2014, reaching 2 million views in 2 weeks, and they escaped disbandment and decided to become a hard rock band. Also, they perform LIVE overseas and increase the number of fans. Now they write, compose and arrange all their songs. 130 original songs. And 51 music videos have been released on the official TH-cam, all of which are killer songs.

So something you can see on display here you might not have noticed is something the bass player MISA is quite famous is her insanely slick hybrid picking technique. During her solo she alternates fro pick to slap a couple of times and she flips the pick so quick and seemlessly into her pointer finger while plucking with her middle and pinky/ring fingers. She does this all the time and I've necer heard of her dropping a pick.

I caught BAND-MAID in Minneapolis this year, right after they were at Lalapalooza. They are amazing live, and given the smaller US venue, I got to listen stationed about ten feet in front of Kanami (lead guitaris). BAND-MAID is my favorite band on earth. And you have plenty more BAND-MAID material to enjoy---I suggest the "Choose Me" music video, as a nice next stop.
But I consider BAND-MAID hard rock, maybe punk. If you want some ladies who play metal, also out of Japan, you have some high quality options. Lovebites (try "Holy War (live)"), Nemophila ("Dissension" MV), or... I dare you... Hanabie ("We Love Sweets" MV)

The band founder (lady with red flower, 2nd vocalist, rhythm guitar, main lyricist) used to work at a Maid Cafe. Since she wanted to form a band that looks "idol" but played Rock music, the maid persona came about. :) The lead vocalist and bassist didn't want to conform hence the black (not) maid-like outfits.

That difference actually makes the entire aesthetic even stronger. I love that while they all are pushing back against societal expectations of how women are "supposed to dress" they aren't all alike in their presentation. And after all, rock and metal have ALWAYS been counter to societal expectations. I'm new to Band-Maid, but not to metal, and these ladies are worthy heirs to the legacy of the bands who came before them. ❤

Hard rock. Some of their songs do get to heavy progressive -- look at the double feature "Manners/Black Hole". Manners is funky and groovy. Black Hole is chaos -- and great. You'll also like "From Now On" (a great instrumental) and "Blooming" (every member composed a bit and the lead guitarist put it all together).
Oh, and the lead singer is a part time model -- she is gorgeous, as you say. You should watch their song "Gion-Cho" for beauty. They jokingly gave up the maid costumes and wore traditional Japanese geisha clothing and rebranded themselves as "Band-Maiko" (maiko is apprentice geisha) as an April 1st prank -- classiest prank ever.

Best reaction in some time! They consider themselves to be Hard Rock, however Metal is among their many influence. They do it all! Rock, Punk, Funk, Power Pop, Jazz & Metal, even Traditional Japanese and Acoustic Ballads. If you want more Metal influenced songs try 'Different', Black Hole' or 'Rinne'. But first I'd suggest a very Hard Rock song that was commissioned as the season two closing theme for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura, 'Shambles'. Welcome to the Best Band In The World with well over 100 songs in the last 10 years! And, Maidiacs being the loyal fans that they are, your subs are about to blow up! Enjoy the ride!

Our MAIDs have been together over 10 years now. We are expecting a new album shortly. The current catalog is approaching 150 songs. They have indeed been invited to write music for some pretty big anime franchises. I'll just say you have a lot of work to do ;) .
    BAND MAID is:
Miku Kobato (小鳩 ミク) - rhythm guitar, vocals, PR (Band founder, lyricist ... our flappy pigeon, po!)
Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波) - lead guitar (musical composer extraordinaire - the princess)
Akane Hirose (廣瀬 茜) - drums, percussion (see bananas ... and ramen - the gorilla)
MISA MISA MISA - bass guitar (drinks hard liquor and performs without shoes on stage - the barefoot assassin)
Saiki Atsumi (厚見 彩姫) - lead vocals ("we dance in the palm of her hand" - Domination - The Queen)

Discovered them in January of '23. Saw them live in May in Houston. Incredibly talented musicians.

Band Maid has something for everyone. Strong and intricate compositions, highly skilled instrumental talents, great vocal melodies, wide variety of styles. They have about 100 self composed songs, about 125 including music written for them in their early years. None are bad, starts at good and goes up. So just pick any to experience more.

Now you need to attend at least one of their concerts. "Domination" is the first video I saw of theirs, so I had to see them live. I have now been to two of their concerts and believe me they are awesome live. Hopefully they will tour the U.S. again this year.

The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing demure maids vs what you are hearing Hard Rock.
They write all their songs, music by Kanami, lead guitar; Akane, drums and MISA bass. The lyrics are written by Miku, rhythm guitar, vocals , spokes pigeon and band founder.

hope you're ready for the invasion of the Maidiacs... Kanami has somehow become my favorite guitarist in just a few months, she seems to have an unlimited supply of incredible riffs.

It’s so much fun to watch the reaction of someone who really gets this band. If you explore further, you might be surprised with the variety of styles BAND-MAID plays, as well as how their sound has evolved over the past ten years. You might want to go back to their earliest Official Music Videos and work your way forward to really appreciate the journey: THRILL, THE NON-FICTION DAYS, and DON’T LET ME DOWN.
If you like the Hard and Heavy, here are three more amazing all-female Japanese bands, all with a twin-guitar attack, starting with the most senior, and a recommended song to start with for each of them:
I truly have heard no band that sounds like GACHARIC SPIN, who started 14 years ago, and have gone through a number of line-up and stylistic changes. See their current line up, comprising three lead vocalists, and experience the ferocity with which they opened their set at NAONのYAON 2023, the Tokyo festival produced by SHOW-YA, an all-female Heavy Metal band formed in 1981, celebrating multiple generations of female musicians. The clip starts with an abbreviated version of REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY, and then switches to the absolutely crushing THE COME UP CHAPTER - th-cam.com/video/eEFYh3WiybA/w-d-xo.html . Note that drummer Yuri and pink-haired Angelina 1/3 are recent additions to the band, and are about ten years younger than the other members.
“We are LOVEBITES, and we play Heavy Metal!” That’s how these five ladies introduce themselves. Formed in 2016, they take the familiar sounds of Power/Speed/Thrash metal and spin them into something new and refreshing. Many old Metal-heads say they are the best band in the past 20-years. Start with this performance, before checking out their latest line-up.
    HOLY WAR - th-cam.com/video/bgAxpEpEcno/w-d-xo.html
The members of NEMOPHILA first got together in 2019, but they are all veteran musicians who have played in other bands previously. They are all extremely talented, but it is the unique voice of MAYU that makes them stand out. It’s impossible to pin down their style; they have a MetalCore edge, with excursions to the realms of Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, and most recently 80’s-style power ballads. Start with the official live video in which they close the show with their first original song, OIRAN - th-cam.com/video/5qABnfChpbk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zByH1Kcxe8gHAMz_

Great to see a reactor so passionate about the actual music. There will be so much in this band for you to enjoy. You are right about Saiki- the lead singer, she is a real star inter own right. Be ready to smile, cry, sweat and jump up and down to the passion that they bring to their songs. Welcome to the wonderful world of Band-Maid. Their mix or styles is their own genre.

Saiki is simply mesmerizing live. For a naturally shy person, she absolutely transforms into a force of nature in front of an audience.

Misa, their bassist, switches from picking to slapping effortlessly quite often, which is amazing to watch. I don't know how she manages it, but it's impressive! I got to see her up close in the front row twice in 2022. She just blew me away with how great she is. She never misses.
