As a vocalist myself, it is very welcomed that you have taken some time to speak about Saiki and Miku's vocals. In the early days, they would share lead vocals more often. Miku actually won an idol contest in Japan before Band-Maid, so she is no slouch vocally. In fact, she usually has a song to herself on each album where she sings solo lead (Beauty and the Beast, Time, Rock in Me,. Sayonakidori). Saiki actually had vocal cord polyp surgery in 2017, and there is a bit of a difference in her tonality pre and post, which you will probably pick up on as you progress. And, yes, Miku is the spice-mistress. Just wait til you hear Why Why Why.

There is a moment in a video of Miku tuning a Zemaitis 12-string guitar with Kanami humming the note(s) for her - someone watching asked if Kanami has perfect pitch and one the staff says yes. Kanami smiles and says she's a "human tuner." (side note: BAND-MAID's music evolved mainly because management finally allowed them to record a Kanami composition. After that, Kanami and her mates have taken control of their music allowing Kanami, a great composer in my mind, to originate some amazing songs like FROM NOW ON and DOMINATION and 100+ more tunes.)

This is Band Maid baby pictures. Yes, the “simpler side.”
However, the bass solo into a guitar solo was a distinct feature that made the biggest impact, in my opinion. And that has remained a “Band Maid Thing” to this very day.
Kanami, the lead guitarist and primary songwriter has “relative pitch.” She has been known to help Miku tune her guitar by voice.
The perfect follow up to this would be “Choose Me,” the B-side of their third single. And if you’re feeling adventurous? Do a double reaction with this third single. The A-side was “Daydreaming.”
P.S. Here’s an inside Maidiac secret: notice the tiny hat on the drummer, Akane? It was retired with a costume change in 2018. It’s a little way to tell whether the music is before or after their breakout album, World Domination of that year. “Pre- and Post- Tiny-hat Era”

For all us Maidiacs that Thrill was our first exposure to BM this song has a real soft spot in our hearts !!!!! Couple of fun facts....it's the only
video you will see Misa wearing shoes....she has morphed into "The Barefoot Assassin " Secondly, Kanami is the member with perfect
pitch and does the majority of their writing. I really think the vocals often get over looked because of how strong this band is musically.

Miku didn't know how to play her guitar here, look closely....so this was only MISA, Akane and Kanami. I always LOVE Saiki's little puffy cheek exasperation exhale at the very end of her vocals.....poor thing had a rough shoot, probably tired of changing uniforms....Lol! I always felt Miku and Saiki are the best duo in rock since the B-52's, not range wise but the compliment each other. No two could ever match Kate and Cindy....IMHO. If you like their harmonies check out "Blooming".....you'll think you died and went to Heaven.

Also, they seem to utilize vocal octaves maybe even more than pure harmonization, with Miku on both the high and low end. I have heard Miku sing mezzo soprano all the way down to high baritone. She has an insane range, maybe 4+ octaves.

    • @paulbame865
      @paulbame865 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think their harmonies (I love their octaves) are secret sauce, as are Kanami's supportive bits during vocals -- neither HAS to be there and both make the music better but fit so well it's easy to overlook. I think they often add a different effect on Miku's voice (chorus seems common) than Saiki's which makes the combined vocal texture even more interesting. The 10th-anniv Yokohama concert mixed Miku's vocals a little hotter, and I enjoyed hearing how creative and precise they can be.
In Domination, there are parts where no instruments seem to be on the beat, so they use vocals as rhythm too.

The first recording and management company for the Band did not have the same idea for them as a rock/metal band. They saw their appeal as "cute" pop rock and for whateve reason they went largely ignored by the public. They presented nymerous songs they wrote and wanted to perform, but were denied the chance to do so. Finally their company , thinking to release them from contract (unknown to Band Maid), allowed them one chance to do what they wanted, thinking it would demonstrate that their harder rock idea was fallacious. Band Maid chose this song. Almost immediately it found a huge audience outside of Japan, largely because in Japan they were not known or not known for this kind of music. Thus their career was saved. To this day, they are still more popular outside Japan than in. What you see here is that first attempt to push into that musical genre they are known for today. Though not their best song, thank God for it! Great reaction btw!!!!!

Back to the very beginning. The song that saved the band. This is the original version that went viral. This is very linear and simple as you observed. To be clear they did not "write" any of the songs on their first 3 albums, including this one. It was one of the things they fought for - control of their music and musical destiny. The only exception was the song ALONE, the final song on the third album Brand New Maid. After that the single YOLO was produced with some of the best B side music ever. That was followed by the album Just Bring It ... which is why the music on that album is so important.
Fun fact - Miku is NOT playing her guitar in this video. She was told to go to the music store and buy one she liked so the band looked better balanced out on camera. The Rickenbacker is effectively a prop. She could not play a note and was later taught by Kanami. She is quite good now. It is also important to note that Miku gets at least one song on every album where she sings lead. Originally She was the bands sole vocalist but did not think she had the voice to carry a full rock sound.

The members were surprised to see a sudden increase in access from overseas, and Kanami investigated and found out that it was J-Rock Radio.

This song set the hook for me, next song, "Dice", reeled me in! Been headed down the Pigeon Hole ever since! This is the first song off their third album, so yes, they had established who each one was as a musician and the direction they wanted to go. Gotta give major thanks to Miku for being willing to push forward with the idea for Band-Maid! Saiki and Miku blend so well!

"Thrill" is the music video that saved the band. Band-Maid was still struggling for an audience and management was contemplating ending the band. (The members didn't know this, they learned it -two years- _sometime_ later.) When J-Rock News (a US publication for Japanese music interest) linked the video on their FB it went viral. After that all it took was hard work and talent to establish their international fan base. Thanks for the reaction!

Not to be too picky, but I wonder about that info about the members not knowing until two years later management was contemplating ending the band. In one of the radio shows that Miku and Saiki did, Miku talked about crying really hard when she heard about it, so it must have been before they knew the band was safe, or she wouldn't have had that reaction. Maybe it was some detail they learned of two years later?

@@artomatt I dunno anything about it, but I could see it being a big deal even if you find out much later. It's like learning how close you came to losing everything, y'know? That can hit even harder when you actually understand what you almost lost, how different your life would be. A single decision in someone else's hands and all this might not exist, that's pretty heavy. If that had a big emotional impact on Miku I can totally understand!

*Miku Kobato* (from hereunder, Kobato): Actually, BAND-MAID was about to end after two years of starting the band. But we were saved by our overseas audience, and we were able to continue as we were getting good responses from them. If our old selves saw us, I don’t think we would be like, “it’s impressive you’ve come this far,” but instead, they’d be surprised like “wow, you guys are doing this for nine years!?”
*SAIKI:* We’ve never really told this story before [laughs].
*――I didn’t know about it! Was it the “Thrill” MV that made you to be recognized overseas?*
*Kobato:* That’s right. If we didn’t have that, the band was going to end.
*SAIKI:* But back then, we still didn’t know about it, and _we were told sometime later,_ “that was going to be your last release.” And we all went, “What!?”
*Kobato:* One day, the head of our agency told us so, and we were all surprised like, “are you serious!?”

The band didn't actually write this one - early in their career their label basically gave them songs to play, which might be part of why they sound different. But the band kept pushing to write their own stuff, the label finally relented and let them record Alone. And they've been writing all their songs ever since! So that one might be a cool one to check out, in a way it feels like the start of the real Band-Maid to me, but still different to their later stuff. And really cool harmonising with the voices, I think you'd enjoy it a lot!

I recommend you to react to them because you will lear a lot of what they been paying trough. Saiki vocals are different from this video to the actual vocals of today and is because she almost lost her voice. See how she go trough a rough time and never give up coming back with stronger vocal falls is quite amazing and open your mind making you see the band totally different. Each member have one video where you lear the history of them and how they get together; except Miku, her story needed 3 videos. I hope you react to them because I will love to see them again with you.

NittPicc, suggestion. The next Band Maid song you should react to is "Play", the official live version. It's the song the band played right before "Domination", the official live video, during their concert. Every member gets to shine. After that, please react to "Daydreaming", the official music video. It shows that Band Maid is more than just a hard rock band. "Daydreaming" is a rock ballad that Kanami, their lead guitarist and composer, wrote to give a softer song for Saiki, their lead vocalist, perform because, at the time, she was having difficulty with her voice. Afterward Saiki had surgery to remove polyps from her vocal cords. Saiki's voice is so much more powerful now.

Love your enthusiasm towards planet Earth’s greatest band. This song was my first exposure to Band-Maid and even though admittedly simple compared to their later songs it nevertheless KICKS ASS! Most bands would love to have their BEST as good as “Thrill”, but to Band-Maid, it was just a beginning. This song actually saved Band-Maid as their record company was going to cut them loose. That is, until this video went viral and the rest is history. I love every member of this band and can write a book praising them. The line “Just Breaking new Gate” refers to the fact that even though they are cute maids looking more K-POP than rock, watch out because no one (NO ONE) can match us, we are here to dominate and if you want, you can come along for the Thrill. I LOVE THESE LADIES, QUEENS of ROCK… and metal and progressive and so on.

If you are interested in lyrics. I recommend BAND-MAID's About us. This song has a special meaning as it was dedicated to the fans while we were unable to meet them due to COVID-19. This is Saiki's wonderful vocal ballad.
    Words:MIKU KOBATO Music & Arrangement:BAND-MAID
I wonder how they’re all doing now.
    A vision in my dreams,
    It makes me feel nostalgic.
Even if you are far away.
My heart will always be with you.
    Even when we’re apart.
Drowning in thoughts of the uncertain tomorrow,
    I can’t do anything; so faint-hearted.
    Just wanting, just only
    Longing for the everyday.
The days pass by in a haze
    Cast over this vast world.
    Yet we live on.
    It’s alright! See, I'm here.
    Neither of us is alone.
    Cries…
I did. Good old days, Ooh...
    ‘I’m back home!’
    ‘Just a moment!’
    Whatever happens,
    Don't feel the distance.
    Recalling those times,
    It makes me feel nostalgic.
    Even now,
Accept someone for who they are.
In the days we can’t meet
My silent cries well up inside me, but I can’t move.
There’s no release for my troubled heart.
I just implore you, just only
    Don't feel forlorn.
The flowers will bloom and be reborn
    Into this Unseen World,
    Into the new dawn.
    It’s alright! See, I'm here.
    Neither of us is alone.
    Cries... ...
I did. Good old days, Ooh...
    ‘Welcome back home’
    ‘See you later’
In my corner of the world, I dream my dreams.
    Flow
    Believe me-
I will light up your life with my voice.
    It can’t be helped,
    There will be,
    Again, and once more,
    For certain, there will be
    Meetings and farewells, and
Each time sorrow will rend our hearts.

    Don’t dwell on the meaning.
I'm here, cherishing the memories reaching out from that time.
(Yeah, we won't forget this day-an engraving of our love)
Even in the days we can't meet,
    We still grow together.
These feelings that never change, wrap them carefully and
    Just forwards, just forwards, onwards.
    Take my hand, and
Let us brighten the gloom with our smiles.
    Let's build a future
    In this emerald world.
It’s alright! See, we are all here.
    No one is alone.
    Fly more...
I did. Good old days, Ooh...
    ‘Thank you’
    For now and tomorrow.

If you want to continue in chronological order, and that would not be a bad idea, I'd consider Real Existence Live (MV is good, but live is really electric). It's a real face ripper. Keep in mind, someone else is writing their songs at this point in time - but they are good songs. You are dead on when you point out how far they've come. Their work ethic is extremely inspiring to the fan base. For me, Miku's progress as a rhythm guitarist and lyricist has inspired me on more than one occasion to get off my bum and practice, write - whatever. Their later versions of this song have a little bit more complex bass solo too - although still easy peasy for MISA-san, who is IMO one of the best rock bassists alive today. Good job noticing how well the voices complement each other too - both in harmonizing and also some very effectively placed unison (octave apart.) They have worked their butts off for ten years!!

The video that saved the band.
Except for 1 song on their 3rd album, their first 3 albums were written for them. Their first album was very pop/punk. They made a single after that and this song was a b-side. They told the studio they would prefer to do this song as their first video instead as it’s the style of music they want to make. A little while after its release it got picked up by a j-rock news site. They introduce western audiences to Japanese bands. The video went viral, hit over a million views, the girls thought that their account had been hacked or something. They got invited to play at a festival in Seattle (I think).
Meanwhile the studio was planning on dissolving the band and this basically forced them to keep them together.
The rest as they say, is history. So while I like this song well enough, it’s beloved within the fan base because without it we don’t have Band Maid.

This was before they were able to get their own compositions supported by management. So this was written by an outside songwriter specifically for them and Band-Maid gave it their treatment.
But this was their first YT video and it brought attention to them that boosted them a lot.
My first listen was Choose Me, which was their next YT drop.

This was my first Band-Maid music video. I didn't know what to make of it but that riff got stuck in my head so I kept going back to this song. I eventually clicked on two more and liked them so I bought the album. Shortly afterward Alone came out and I ordered that album too and was hooked.

This was before both Saiki and Miku had vocal nodule work done, and the music (lyrics and score) were fed (approved) to them by upper mgmt. Now, they are the mgmt of their destiny and music, i.e., they include instrumentals in a nearly 3 hr. show to give Saiki a voices rest, but most call it Saiki's "pee" break, Po! Thanks for the music lesson! 🦍🍌

I love seeing Kanami, our pure-hearted princess, rock'in out on this MV.
If you like the vocals, please try Corallium and Why Why Why. Both have great vocal arrangement.
If you're stunned by the groovy bass and guitar solo, again, recommend you to try Manners and Blackhole, 2 in 1 live video.
    Thanks for sharing Band-Maid!!

For the first 2 albums, their company had the songs written for them, despite the fact that Kanami - their lead guitarist - was constantly writing songs. But the record company rejected all of them. there were a lot of them. The very first song they wrote and arranged all by themselves was Alone, which is a really great song. And yes, there is a video for it on TH-cam.

Although Mike and Saiki can sing in the same registers, Saiki's voice has more depth and body? Miku's voice is leaner. The combo for harmonies is gold.

Miku's low register sounds lower than what actually is because it's more froggy and works like vocal effect. How they switch register depending on the song is pure genius. The outro of Manners is the best example imo.

I know you have gotten a lot of Band Maid recommendations but Band Maiko “Gion-Cho” has some flute in the background and it’s a really beautiful video. Band Maiko is their alternate version they created for April fools day.

Miku and Saiki harmonize a lot live. Wait until you see the MV of INFLUENCER. Watch NO GOD live if you want to see how good Misa (the barefoot assassin) is on bass. They don't have a bad song, just some you might like more than others.

This is the song I found in the side panel that got me hooked on Band Maid. I wasn't searching for them, I hadn't even heard of them, it was a total accident. I decided to take a chance, after all, if they sucked, all I've lost is 4:11 of my life. Well, it didn't suck. Click. Play. BOOM! 30 seconds in, I was hooked! for far too long, there was just nothing new in rock and I had given up hope of ever finding another band I could really get excited about. That was 6.5 years ago. I am a Maidiac! Kuruppo!

I must say that I became a real fan of Band Maid because of Real Existence, Puzzle and Domination although I had already heard Thrill, however it is in my heart and even more so when I learned how important it was for the band. Greetings from a maidiac from Argentina.

One of the other "early" items in this video is their Battle Armor - there are others who have done a detailed study of their outfits, but what you see in the video represents some of their earliest outfits. Saiki hated the early maid look and they were careful to not tell her what she would be wearing at first, just that it would be a costume. She pulled the apron off right away. As the band progressed, they changed their designs to suit the tastes and needs of each member while trying to maintain the maid esthetic. They have said that they are all very shy outside of the stage and wearing the outfits has allowed them to get past that. They update and tweak their outfits regularly and it is a lot of fun to see where they are going next. One of the biggest shockers was their Christmas acoustic performance where they were non-maid outfits. Some amazing music that I'm sure you will enjoy when you get there.
    Love the reactions and analysis!
