The symptoms of lymphoma

  • A medical film featuring Dr Andrew Davies, Consultant in Medical Oncology at the University of Southampton, talking about the most common symptoms of lymphoma, and the types of B-symptoms and local symptoms that lymphoma may cause.
    Important note: Because the symptoms of lymphoma are very general, and can occur in other, more common illnesses, it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. Having one or more of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have lymphoma. However, it is important that you don’t ignore symptoms that could be serious. If you think you might have lymphoma, or you are worried that you might have possible symptoms of lymphoma, please contact your GP surgery for advice.

    I have made several check ups with my doctors last year that was November and September 2019, I got my swollen lymph nodes from August until now due to my Sore Throat.... But many doctors and specialists concluded that it's just a swollen lymph node healing very slow and I have nothing to worry about. Anyways, I don't have to worry because I know that Jesus Christ holds my future. So Never Worry.. it's just a Lymph Node.. That's Normal.

    In 2007 i diagnosed with Hodgkin disease. My right armpit had a big tumor. Back then i was only 9 years old. In 2008 i went on a surgery, where the doctors removed the tumor, and in the same year i got a chemotherapy. In the next year (2009) i went on a radiation therapy and after that everything was fine (at least with my health, not to mention school bullying, loneliness, the loss of my father, and depression). Now, in 2022 few days ago i experienced that my left leg groin lymph nodes became swollen. Not as big as were my armpit one, but also not so small. Its medium hard and a little bit painfull. I read somewhere that its is very rare that after 10 years of Hodgkin treatment the disease will return. I hope its just some minor infection or something. . .

    • @LymphomaAction
      @LymphomaAction  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Archer, we are sorry hear of your lymphoma diagnosis in 2007 and subsequent treatment and note that your leg groin lymph nodes have recently become swollen. Lymph nodes can become swollen for lots of reasons and for most people swollen lymph nodes don’t mean that they have lymphoma or that it has returned. We hope that in this case it is as you say a minor infection but suggest that if your lymph nodes don’t go down within 2-3 weeks or if they become more swollen that you speak to your GP.

    @carle5538 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Yes, " it is important to discuss this with your doctor if you have these symptoms ", but that would depend a lot if your doctor is interested in your case. I knew someone who had lymphoma with the symptoms described here for the chest. Very frequently she would get breathing problems where she could not even breath. She would suddenly start coughing nonstop. All they were doing were chest X rays in the hospital and giving her antibiotics because her lymph nodes were swollen in the neck and armpit area. It was not until she started bleeding in the stool and having more severe symptoms that they decided to do a CT scan of their entire body , oohhh finally. I remember telling her for months to ask them to do a FULL CT scan of her body and she kept saying to me that she could not tell them what to do because they were not going to pay attention to her. She was elderly (75) and could not speak the French language fluently. The real Doctors call CT scans the differential test for lymphoma because that is how they can see it is lymphoma. When they finally decided to do the CT scan that is when they noticed that all her lymph nodes were swollen all over her body (abdomen, groin, etc) . The patient had lymphoma. And they failed to see this early. They also did not even do a biopsy which would dictate the kind of treatment she would need as there are many subtypes of lymphoma, under Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma based on the literature out there. Instead they would give her albuterol inhalers, the so called " pump inhalers ". This of course did not help. They also ended up giving the patient an infectious bacterial infection with Clostridium Difficile because of the too many antibiotics . The patient was also bleeding in the stool and they knew this for a while. They wanted to do a colonoscopy to see why she was bleeding so much. It did not sound like a hospital right? The patient passed away. This happened in Montreal, Canada. So much for licensed physicians. Give me a break. Even the best of the best are making mistakes. If you have symptoms do not just depend on one opinion. That might be deadly for you. Get a second or a third opinion even. Read up on your condition. Buy health family books. Use the internet. Information about Good health is more accessible now because of the internet, but do not diagnose yourself. Get involved because no one else will care !!!! Be careful if you get sick in Canada and you are over 50. Start getting involved with your health early, not when you are 70 because no one there, or even in the USA, will pay much attention to everything you say. You will hear them say things like " What is the one thing that bothers you the most? " or " it is all age related ". This proves lack of concern and care on their part and this is wrong. If you hear these comments start walking out the door and go to someone else. Do not waste your time. This has been my experience for decades with the system. Good health is so priceless, but it can only start with you. The person who died here was my aunt.

It hasn't gotten any bigger. My mom is an RN and told me not to worry about it but if it's easier for a little longer I might just go get it checked out. Hopefully it goes down after a few dentists visits to get rid of my gum infection

    Those rashes might be misdiagnosed as ezecma and psoriasis but they are actually group of Lymphomas called the Cutaneous T Cell Lymphomas and generally the most common kind Mycosis Fungoides.I discovered this to my cost and what had been diagnosed as ezecma and then psoriasis turned into tumours leading to an amputation and what it really was, Stage 2b Mycosis Fungoides, came out .

      Sorry to hear this. My lymphoma was misdiagnosed as psoriasis for years. It didn't help that when I told the consultant that my skin hurt, he told me that it didn't hurt because psoriasis doesn't hurt. I did ask whether this might call the original diagnosis into question, but he wasn't in the business of giving people sick notes, which is what he thought I was up to. However, Guy's Hospital was bloody brilliant, so I would suggest that anyone having trouble with their local hospital, try Guy's for another opinion. I ended up at Stage 4 before they worked it out, but it was having that second opinion that got me the right diagnosis. I met a number of other patients at Guy's with similar stories.

      Hi Angeli, thanks for your post. There are many possible symptoms of lymphoma, and the symptoms can also be caused by other conditions. We would always suggest that if you are having symptoms that you are worried about, that you speak to your doctors about this. They can talk to you about your medical history and the symptoms you are having, and see whether further tests might be helpful. It can be a really worrying time, and so seeking support can be really helpful. If you are in the UK, you can read more about our services here: lymphoma-action.org.uk/support-you

    My tonsil started to swell one day. Not much pain. Only one side. I could see it growing in my mouth. It enlarged huge within a few weeks or so. I went to doctors. First my home doctor and then ear, nose and throat doctor. All said it's just infection. I got antibiotics even though they didn't find bacteria. It didn't help. I just got side effects of the medicine and the tonsil kept being large. I insisted something wrong as I never experienced such thing (I know some experience it often from usual infection but it had never happened to me). Finally the ear, nose and throat doctor agreed to take biopsy while saying she was not expecting finding anything. A few days later, she called me and told that lymphoma was found.
    I was at stage 1. I didn't have other symptoms. Just super large tonsil at one side. it was 7 years ago and I was just 40 yo. Got chemo and radiation.

Recently my state became worse so I have a lot of exams to do. At the same time I have a painful lump in my left breast. I have a swollen lymph node on the left side of my groin that seemingly came from nowhere, but it’s very sore. It’s been present for about a week now with no signs of getting better. The node itself isn’t terribly sore, but its location right in the crease of my hip means that it gets ‘pinched’ every time I raise my leg or sit down. This has led to a near constant pain in my thigh and lower abdomen around my hip. I have an intense phobia of hospitals and doctors that has existed since childhood (I’m 22), but it’s getting to the point where I feel like I should go. Absolutely terrified to think what could be causing it, as there are no external symptoms (rash, discoloration, etc.) and no other symptoms apart from the ones already mentioned. Here’s to hoping that it will resolve itself within the next few days, and save me the tremendous anxiety of having to go to a hospital.

      Hi Jayne. Naturally it can be very worrying when you feel you are experiencing symptoms. We would encourage anyone who is worried, or feels that they might have symptoms of lymphoma, to talk to their healthcare professionals for help. We have lots of information on our website to help too, so please do have a look if that would be helpful.

    I've had a swollen lymph node for years on the left side of my neck, and I had it checked a few months ago, and my doc. Said it was definitely benign and I didn't have to get a biopsy. *btw it is almost the size of a purple grape* so I felt fine about it. Until this year *2020* came and I started getting stomach cramps, along with a bit of the runs. I also had nausea, but these sypmtoms were not extremely intense. I also lost my appetite, and lost weight *which is reasonable since I didn't really eat and I had a bit of the runs* but when I was washing my face I have a habit of cleaning my neck, and I felt the back of my neck right below the skull. I felt a reallly tiny bump * normally I wouldn't worry, since it's very small* but it didn't feel like my other normal ones, this one felt hard and didn't move easily. I went to the doc and he said it was most likely because of how I've been feeling lately, but I forgot to mention to him that I've also been itching like crazy... so... idk anymore
    Update: the tiny pump on back of my head went down. And my benign lymph node that's almost the size of a grape remains the same. However I still feel a little sick so i guess i did have an infection or something.

      @@lilmikey2203 yes, it's still scary since it's still there, but I'm assuming it remained that size because when I was in elementary I had an extremely bad tooth infection that spread on the left side of my face almost causing me to become blind. Thank God it didn't come to that, but I guess maybe the slightly enlarged lymph node that still remains is from that time. Since I read that lymph nodes can stay slightly enlarged from tooth infection and infections in general.

    I think a lymph node is swollen on my left arm, inside of my armpit. However, I am not too sure, there is slight pain around the area, and the lymph node does appear prominent in touching it, and it does feel a bit swollen?* Asterisk mark besides swollen because I am not too sure if it actually is swollen. I will have to wait and see for a bit what comes out of it, it may go away in a few days, or not. I will see a doctor if it does worsen, as I have no patience in getting anxious over something I am strictly uneducated in, and would also cause me to jump to major conclusions.

    I've been experiencing symptoms for the past 3 weeks, went to an urgent care and they told me it was probably an infection and nothing to worry about for an 18 year old. Yet my problems persist, then I went to the ER, got a blood test and they said I was fine even though in the data it shows that my lymphocytes are down. I've been very frustrated with the doctors I've dealt with since they look at me and figure since I'm so young the likelihood is so low. Yet my lymph nodes are enlarging and expanding and now some of them are even hard. The healthcare in this country fucking sucks and it doesn't help that I'm a hypochondriac. While I understand this is hard to diagnose a patient being ignored while his/her problems get worse while there is still time for treatment is a goddamn shame.

    • @LymphomaAction
      @LymphomaAction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Anionic. I'm not sure which country you are writing from? It sounds like you are very worried about your symptoms, and feel that you want more input from your medical team. Sometimes it helps to keep a diary of any symptoms you feel you are having, so that you can take it to the doctors. (You can read more about symptoms on our website here: lymphoma-action.org.uk/symptoms-of-lymphoma )
      Symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes can be caused by other, less serious conditions, but it can be helpful for doctors to explain what they think the cause might be, if they think it isn't lymphoma. You might also find our information about being referred for tests helpful (here: lymphoma-action.org.uk/about-lymphoma-tests-diagnosis-and-staging/being-referred-tests-and-scans ).
      You mention that you had a blood test? This is a test that is often done to check overall health and the cause of possible symptoms, but it is not usually a test that can specifically diagnose lymphoma on its own (and so other tests might be needed). You can see our information on tests here: lymphoma-action.org.uk/about-lymphoma/tests-diagnosis-and-staging
      Our information is for a UK audience so if you are outside of the UK the health system may be different.
