  • Paul McCarthy suggests that complex movements may have different affects than well learned movements on cognitive function. In this lively talk which includes demonstrations of the ancient martial art of Filipino Kali, drumming and some impromptu dancing, he suggests that we start our own ‘movement revolution’ as a pathway to greater health and wellbeing.

    Paul “The British Ninja” McCarthy has been studying movement and martial arts for over 20 years. He holds black belts in various martial arts including Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), Hapkido (4th degree) and Taekwondo (1st degree) and is an instructor of Savate, Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do. With an MS from Indiana University in Kinesiology and through his experience coaching, teaching and managing various movement practices, Paul is fascinated by what makes the body ‘tick’. He is currently working with Neuroscience Professors at UCLA, University of Victoria and University of Illinois to study how martial arts movement patterns improve cognitive function. Paul’s philosophy is that movement is vital to a happy and healthy life and that training and opening your mind to multiple arts, whether combative or healing, is the true path to maximizing your learning potential.

    We've noticed the same in our training group. We've had many instances we're students have reported increased creativity on the day following double stick training. I routinely use double stick drills to break through writers block and other plateaus. Thank you for sharing!

    Paul, I wrote this in September 2014:
    But I'm always in fear that not enough is being done to keep people using their brains active in ways that benefit them since the technology is doing so much for us.
    I have an unfounded theory that when we work in Kali with the “double sticks”, because we use right & left hand, do stationary & in-motion drills, hit inward & backhand strikes (with a hidden middle), strike on the high line & low line (again with a hidden middle), etc., etc., we engage many, many more brain cells than usual.
    So I think this type of training could be significant in brain development.
    One of these days I'm going to have it scientifically tested.
    Can you imagine if I'm right and we find that older people with failing mental faculties could benefit from simple exercises in Kali double sticks?

    Great work and presentation. Bridging the relationship of FMA movements and techniques with scientific research to its health benefits will only add more credibility to the art.

    Paul, for whatever reason the post is connecting to my training center so my name is Tammy Yard-McCracken - I have a Psy.D. in holistic psych and have been 'prescribing' for years concepts similar to what you are presenting, it was very cool to watch your TEDX talk. The link was forwarded by a friend and fellow martial artist who is connected to a small group of us pushing learning models on the mat from a brain science perspective, including the creative problem solving of play demonstrated in the Kali sparring by your phenom. guys at the end. Thank you for putting this talk together. You tied a series of concepts and learning principles together in a direct, clear and forward-thinking approach. I will be sharing this.

    Very nice presentation! I fell in love with Kali and this style of training 16 years ago when I met my hubby- lots of benefits to marrying the instructor! ;) What Paul says is so true... I went from being extremely uncoordinated to now being able to do more of the non-structured Kali movements and have added ballet in the last 5 years and mountain biking recently. The cross-training does wonders, but a solid foundation in Kali will jump-start you into any discipline. Best wishes! Tara Baklund

      Thank you Tara, your last line really resonates, I was just talking to a movement specialist and we were going back and forth on how many athletes (or groups who need to move) can be very fast, very strong etc....but may not have a high level of motor skill performance. Kali provides a baseline of coordination and movement that can be translated to most sports, dancing, functional movements in everyday life and of course combatives. Good luck in your continued journey! As I said Kali is a way of life! :)

    My parents both suffer from dementia and I have made peace that there's a fair chance I will also get it. Kali has been my passion for many years now and this video gives me hope.

    I love training/teaching FMA. And it's a plus that world class percussionist formerly of Weather Report and Koinonoia is involved with the art of my ancestors.

      Yes we were very lucky to have him as part of our presentation. He trains at the Inosanto Academy regularly and we have all benefited from his knowledge and skill in rhythm and drumming!! The connections between; music/rhythm, dance and martial movement have been around for millennia. We just need to get back to focusing on them!

    Paul...excellent presentation...I have been a student/instructor under Guro Dan since the 80's...everything you say is spot on...and it is inspiring me to start training again after some time off...thank you for such and intelligent and insightful piece...bravo!

      I trained a short time at Inosanto Academy in 2003. I trained in Muay Thai but was mostly into grappling at that time and mostly trained with Erik Paulsen. But I do remember that Guro Dan is a good teacher.

    I can honestly say Martial Arts has changed my life. I began training in a blended system with my current instructor in JKD-Kali and Japaness Jujisu in the early 2000's. Started full contact stick fighting in 2012. I was never an athlete type growing up, last to get picked for the football team etc however I have personally felt the transform powers that dedication to martial arts brings. I have been fortunate enough to gain multiple gold medals at National (British), European and World Levels. Seriously, if anyone feels that there is something missing within their lives who is reading this... go find a reputable club / instructor and begin your journey. You never know where it might take you!

      I don't really know, but I think you should check TED Talks website and try to ask them if they have a transcription available. I did a search but there are no direct links offering text, but this video has closed captions, so a written version exists. Good luck :)

      We teach anyone who wishes to be taught. The UCLA Applied Martial Arts class provides individual instruction depending on the students needs and I provide personal training and martial arts instruction in the Los Angeles area.

      Thank you akolodesh for replying, Guro Dan is the source indeed. BeautifulFocus there are many many Kali schools in LA in case MDR is too far, I also teach seminars/workshops and privates in Los Angeles.

      Sorry as an addition...hundreds of folks travel across the country and from many countries around the world to train with Guro Dan, I know traffic is bad in LA, but even if it is just for one of his seminars it is well worth it. Also if you sign up for regular classes (very cheap) you get to experience a living legend every week for as much as 6 hours a week! (after re-reading my first comment I thought it was important to highlight this!)

      Kali is mostly known in the Visayas region... but seem to be usually, only familiar with fellow martial artists
