The 2003 series is the best way to watch it, the dub is easiest to find on streaming but if you're interested in digging there exists fan subtitles for the japanese dub. After that the 1980 series is probably your next best option, the dub and sub are also available on streaming. Really great little show, I can't recommend it enough.

Pluto is the closing thing we have gotten to an Astro Boy Reboot. I really miss Astro Boy as I grew up watching the cartoon. Making cartoons is so expensive and I am glad they made Pluto, but a series focusing on Astro would be nice.

He's not really evil in most adaptations. I haven't read the manga or watched the OG anime, but as far as I'm aware, the only adaptations where Tenma really plays an antagonistic role is the 2003 anime and Pluto (due to a specific series of events)
Tenma is crazy in the manga. Sometimes he helps Astro, sometimes he tries to bring Astro back to him by force (like anime 03). But in the end he has to give up because Astro completely rejects him.

But when Atom was fixed he refused to accept Tenma as his father and used Tenma's own robot to rescue his family.The next chapter is Atom's rebellion: robbing the teacher's house, destroying property... until the robot family got angry, he stopped and left.

Well, there's a certain plot point that's revealed that kinda makes A:TB impossible to be a pure prequel to any preexisting version of Astroboy, but it is a fine manga. Just wish they didn't blow their load with getting an anime so early on in the story's life.
I wrote an alternate world where Astro has been used as a killer by the Japanese govt that didn't lose in World War 2. Over time some 30 years he is finally released of the programming for "Hammer Hand" so he can be free by his 2 dads. Then Gigantor is sent to bring him back even if it only his all important head. My character Night-Gaunt aids him.
As an extra little thing, in the episode Atlas vs Astro, in the Japanese version, Tokogawa does not have a backup of his son's memory but chose to give his son's body to Tenma in the hope that he could bring him back to life.
Here after watching the recent-ish Pluto series, without knowing anything about the story of the actual Astro Boy. I love to spot aspects that have been incorporated, but also seeing aspects that have been left out. The Pluto Anime has been criminally underrated. If you haven`t seen it, I can recommend it.
its honestly really strange to me that Astro (or whatever they called him) was in Pluto, it seemed like a separate story that Gesicht was the main driving force for anyway. but yes, its a very very good show, a must watch for anyone interested in robotic ethics crossed with cosmic horror XD

I remember watching most of this series as a kid in the late 2000s and early 2010s and absolutely loved it! It was even at one point aired on ABC3/ABC-ME in Australia back in 2013-2015! :)
I never really got into Astroboy but I do love Megaman and I found these timeline episode recaps very fun to watch in this video despite never seeing them, I’ve tried that GBA Astroboy game and it’s really good and worth checking out!
This looks like the 2003 series, I've watched it in full but I could probably use a refresher, especially since I don't think the Netflix listings were ever in the correct order even at netflix' peak in the mid-2010s when I watched the series. Like how Astro's sister existed for a while, then wasn't heard from for an even longer while, then is built for the first time. Or the clip-show episode that talked about major plot points that hadn't happened yet. I'll assume those are an issue of chronology versus air date, the kind of shenanigans that happen all the more often with a largely episodic series

Tried to get into the series once years after watching the movie but couldnt find where to enter and sort of gave up. I am just going to be honest I am a fan of the 2009 movie and let me be double honest. I think it is better at portraying a boy who got cloned into a robot. This movie was my childhood obsession. I played the DVD on my laptop so much that I wore out the disc and made it unusable. Wich was devestating for me but my parents were happy as they didnt have to watch the movie every day and night. I mean it literally I had that thing on loop every day even during meals. It took me a long while after I destroyed the disc that I realised there was pirated versions of the movie on the internet. I didnt care about piracy so I just watched the movie from those sites a few times too tho honestly I was pretty burnt out too. I havent watched the movie in over a decade and still remember all the scenes all the lines and all the sound effects thats how much I watched it back then. There was talks about a new astroboy series a few years back but I got no idea what happened to it.
@JarToon I know it's not exactly a traditional cartoon, but can you do a recap about Gorillaz? I'm interested if their music videos tell an overarching story and like I thought it was cool that Ace from The Gangreen Gang played bass for them for a while.
the japanese version of this show is much better. english dub isnt just bad (with the exception of tenma who actually has a fantastic VA) but messes up the more complex stuff from the japanese version. highly suggest watching a video here on youtube that shows the difference in dialogue during the climax scene in particular.
