This was actually a really dark movie if you think about it. Not only did Tenma lose his son but he had to face the reality that he spent NO time with the kid & in a desperate effort to 'turn back time' he created an AI robot to simulate what he wished he'd done when Toby was alive

I don't know what's sadder the fact that he made a perfect replica of his son to replace the boy that died or that he was so upset over the fact that he didn't actually know his kid that he convinced himself something had gone wrong instead of him just not having been around his son enough to actually know about his likes and dislikes
There was the scene from with the blue core saying it was "unpredictable" (whatever that means). That makes me think that the blue core had some effect on Astro's personality. Probably making him less reserved, more out spoken around his father. Not changing his personality from Toby, just enhancing the more "positive" aspects of the original's personality.
Your point is also super sad if that's the case. Also I do believe is a major contributing factor to the father's disconnection to Astro and inevitable breakdown.

The sad thing is that...it didn't create the perfect replica of Toby... He had a different personality and different interests. Toby was dead, and what he created was a new person with Toby's memories, something the doctor didn't want to accept as true. You can't bring back the dead, and Astro was proof of that. However, Tenma could be a better father to this one instead of his late one.

Good animations can only go so far. You need good writing, characters and story for it a successful movie. And good advertisement

That kid's death was very sad if you think about it. He only wanted a better relationship with his father and in doing so got disintegrated. Then his father goes ahead and creates an AI robot to replace his son. Bruh

Imagine that a machine exists which can move your conciousness over to a computer before you die. Nobody would know if you died and the machine just made a perfect copy of you or if you actually passed over to the computer

In the original manga Osamu Tezuka would often appear at the beginning of stories to introduce the story and to cover some of the issues with that stories (such as one where a dog is converted into a human android and that is coverted into a dog android.

You know, I hadn't seen it when I watched this movie as a kid, but this has some serious "Doctor Frankenstein" vibes, what with being raised high up and being brought to life with lightning and all. The whole "rejecting his creation' thing later in the movie really affirms that parallel for me

The part when he wakes up and says ' I feel weird' means that a continuation between the human and robotic version has been linked. Instead of being created, turned on and just going along, he makes self awarness questions, wich means its not just the memory but also the emotional/welfare wich have been natural like transmitted to him. As if one day a human, the other a robot and he notices that he feels odd, not two distinct forms, but one being.

Consider that this Toby isn’t the actual Toby as in sentience wise, you can replicate everything else but the actual person it was based upon.
That's anybody. Even in batman the Lazarus pit makes the resurrected insane. So coming from the dead pretty much means your not the same person.
Its a weird concept. Cuz here he has recreated Toby's body and inserted his conscious from DNA. Creating as stated, a perfect replica. This machine acts like Toby, feels like Toby. But it could be argued that the real Toby is still dead since the only thing that can't be replaced is a soul.
But then what is 'alive'? Do we all carry a soul or are we just a collection of thoughts and memories in our very matter?
actually ... you can theoretically ... in future more common ... there was a patiente with a cancer in his brain, he undergo surgery and after he wokes up, he was a totally different person ... same memories, but different person ... he likes things he disliked before operation and vice versa, his way of thinking was different, his mentality too ... its like brain is a big computer just based on biochemical reactions that are generating 0 1 ... switch some microprocessors (change generation line of 1 0) in this persons case change his biochemical proces in his brains and vuala ... you have another person altogether ... explains a schyzofrenia pretty much ... 2 paths which generates data and they are switching meaning you have 2 different persons living in 1 body ...in same knowledge ... copy somebodys proces and vuala you have the same person ... they are already studies undergoing this ... implications? imagine you altering people personas like being more active, not lazy ... more creative, more productive ... as time flies more and more we getting to 1 big conlucion ... human is just a robot but based on biomaterial base instead of metals and ceramics ...

I remember this movie really well, while I know is base on the anime by the same name and I think I heard that it was bad for others, for me it was the first time I heard of him, especially that I saw the film in my childhood when my parents bought the DVD, and looking back at it, it looks good like I remember, brings a nostalgia in me

It's hard to look at this scene from any angle, he could 'rebuild' his son down to the tiniest details, create a replica equal to the original down to the picometer.
Yet in the end, his son died by the blast of the defense droid. His real son has left the mortal coil. Sure he could put the memories in a replica, but in the end that's all it's going to be, a replica.

I grew up watching the 80s and 2003 versions so they'll always be the best versions to me. But for an americanized version of Astro Boy, this movie isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It has its flaws cinematically but it's still a great Astro Boy retelling

Memory bias, he knew his son very little while working, so interacting with Astro later with what little he knew about him caused cognitive dissonance to kick in and make him realize that his son and this person he created are two different people while sharing the same mind.

I really don't understand why this movie failed at the box office. I thought it was pretty good. And I really liked how, even though he probably still has a lot to do to make it official, Dr. Tenma redeemed himself in this version.
I think it’s because the TV spots were false advertising, the trailer spoiled the ending, and it came out in a month where kids Don’t go to the cinema that much due to school.

Why does the relationship between Toby and Tenma remind me of the relationship between Tony (Iron Man) and Howard Stark. Caring for his son more than he showed.
This movie was my childhood, BUT, I thought that the kid when he was in the explosion somehow got robotic abilities, like how the fantastic 4 were in that giant power field thing, but no I had to grow up and watch it again finally understanding that the kid died! 😂

In the manga this was inspired from, it took the realization that Astro would never grow up, never physically become an adult.
when you see the blueprints it looks like the actual Astro Boy from the manga that’s so cool. They had that detail.

Back when I used to watch this movie all the time in my childhood, I always thought that the reason that Astro ‘wasn’t the same as the Toby’ was because of the blue core that was used to make him, making him pure and light like it. But the more I rethink of it now while watching clips it’s because Doctor Tenga never had the time to know his son, that’s why he seemed ‘not like Toby’ because he never really knew how Toby really was, his likes, dislikes, his personality. And only remembers and knows his son by fragments. That’s really sad.

If you think this is sad never watch the Japanese version of the 2003 series. That will have you in tears in the final episode if this one gets to you like that =)

I'm still sadden that this movie flopped hard in the box office. Because of it, it killed the animation studio that made this movie and their animations is pretty good. They even planned to make a Legend of Zelda movie if this movie succeeded.
The Zelda trailer was just a concept made without Nintendo's approval. Their next feature was going to be a Gatchaman movie. There's even a trailer.

He wouldn't have thought anything because heaven isnt real. He was disintegrated. He is dead. So he was cloned and everything he had experienced had an impression on his DNA. That DNA was used to create a new Toby. This Toby is still the old Toby, just not a weak meat sack anymore. Still very much his son. I dont appreciate you being dismissive of robotic lifeforms. Consciousness is consciousness and needs to be respected regardless of how it came into existence. Of course since you're obviously Christian I'm going to assume you dont understand the beauty of quantum physics, genetics, and how AI furthering human life via extended consciousness via cybernetic links to artificial avatars. The vessel you call a body is nothing more than a meat sack containing your memories and experiences that you misinterpret as individuality or true consciousness. When in reality all you are is very easily mimicked and projected onto an AI which is just as much you as you are you.
P.s. how does a father desperately trying to cling onto the shred of his son that he has the power to bring back into existence make you feel like Toby was "expendable". I tell my grandma everyday that I promise I will bring her back one day and show her the beauty of what this world becomes and that she shouldn't fear death because death is an illusion and that we all exist inside a black hole as information stored on the event horizon and within the black hole and worst case scenario she will just relive her life over and over.

Nic Cage as Dr. Tenma was an amazing casting choice. Shame that we never got a chance to see him go crazy and become a villain, Cage's manic energy in acting can actually match Tenma's insanity.
I don't know if I'd call Tenma a villian in the source material. In the 2003 version, yes. But in Osamu Tezuka's manga, no. Tenma was always portrayed first and foremost as a man who allowed his grief to consume him and drive him to make relatively understandable but still abhorent actions. At most, Tenma is a conflicted, tortured man. His rejection of Astro was always, even in the original manga, motivated by a brutal reminder that the Tobio who died would never come back. The CG film just spelled it out the most blatantly, which wasn't really Tezuka's style. I do agree that I would've loved to see more of this version of the material, as it was my introduction to Tezuka's storied body of work.

If we knew anything from the original series, and even from the 2003 animated series. The go in some adaptions basically does go crazy. Nic Cage was always known for perfectly capturing this sort of unnerving craziness that for a moments in time, hides behind a calmness. Before he ultimately snaps.

I remember this scene very differently. I remember his endoskeleton being made of copper, he turned on immediately after the outer shell was applied and he hugged his dad and said ‘dad’ while still on the table thing.

As heartwarming as it is he technically gets his son back this probably only makes the pain worse as he knows he is treating a replica better than his own son and will never get the chance to.
I loved this movie as a kid. I never realized how dark it was until I became an adult. Although I did understand a little bit. Seeing Tenma sleeping at the foot of Astro's bed and seeing him cry over Tobi's hat got to me in a way I wasn't able to describe back then
