  • PARTS & VENDOR LIST
For a full list of parts & suppliers I used so far, I've provided a spreadsheet for you to see and download at www.tinyurl.com/kensworld. That spreadsheet has some built-in cost features also.
Below is a list of most of the stuff I sourced. I have absolutely no affiliation with these suppliers whatsoever - I just wanted to share the information with you all. This TH-cam thing is just a hobby and it's just more about sharing information. I make an honest living flying helicopters offshore in the North Atlantic. Look around, I know a guy who can push and pull the dents out of the tank. My XJ650 had 2 significant ones and he managed to sort it.

The dents are so small they'll just need to be filled - nothing that requires pulling. I'll probably keep this tank original, get the larger 1100 tank and paint it.

If I were to shoot the tank, I'd remove the pin striping first. Having said that, if the tank is not damaged I'd thoroughly clean and degrease it, hit it with 800 (being careful around the pinstripes), clean it again and then hit it with a few of coats of rattle can 2K clear -- then remove the orange peel (1000, 1500, 2500), polish with 3000, and seal and wax. Fantastic job so far. I find the VX1100 to be uncomfortable to ride, though. Have you considered forward controls?

Wish I could do that - the pinstripe is actually a vinyl graphic buried in 3 coats of clear. I'll buy another tank from the 1100 - it's bigger than the 1000 tank and I can swap it as required. I might mod the next Virago build with the forward controls - definitely more comfy on the longer rides.

Hi, lovely looking bike, just brought the same 1000 version, saw you replaced the seat cover- is it the same cover for the 1000 and 1100 seat, are they the same seat? Thanks Mark

They're the same size and yeah, it's for the 1100. In 1986, Yamaha went to the double row of buttons. Both the backrest and the seat cover are from MikesXS.

I’d leave the tank original you can always do it in the future if you decide to.

I was actually thinking of buying a spare tank from an 1100. They mount the same and all the hardware is the same but the 1100 tank is bigger. I could paint that one in '84 livery and use it for road trips to get a longer range out of the bike.

Keep the tank as-is. This way you will have a harder time selling it because of the dents. Can’t say that it was never dropped :)
In all seriousness: the bike looks stunning!
