XV1000 [VIRAGO] High Compression Engine Build - RUINED CAMSHAFTS - EP1

  • Hey all , in this episode we begin the process of bumping the compression of my 1000 engine by firstly tearing down the donor 750cc motor for its cylinder heads, upgrading the camshaft bearings and discovering issues with the 750 heads along the way.

      Haha! Made this a few days before my partner and I had our first child. Time is precious at the moment but honestly I’ll probably attack it very VERY soon :) I’m glad you’re following along. Keep an eye out!

      @@mattfranco8715 I'm super interested! I have an '86 Virago xv750. This will be my first season riding. But I just purchased an '84 xv1000 bike with no title. the bike is rough but motor runs mint. I want to do the head swap and put the 1000 in my '86.

      Mate! I’m absolutely chomping at the bone to get it done. But it’s so hard to find time atm. Life is busy with a kid now hahah
      But yeah that’s awesome mate good on ya. I’m pumped for ya haha.
      I love these bikes, they are super reliable.

    Hey, nice work, you can also grind valves and replace valve stem seals, check rockers/shafts

      These heads are the ones off my engine that came out of the cafe before I swapped the 1000 in.
      That engine, I lapped the valves and it had valve stem seals through them.
      Should be good enough for now I reckon :)

      😂😂😂 haha! Gotta pop out and get some speed runs and sound clips before I rip it apart. Hoping to get it done in the next couple of weeks :) just had my first kid a few days ago so I’ll be home for a month and I’m sure I’ll get some time here or there.

    Hi Matt, great work! You've upgraded the bearing on the cam chain side, what supports the other end of the cam, is it already a ball bearing?

      Thanks mate! The other side looks like it’s just part of the head I guess. Not 100% sure. Good question haha

    So do you put the headgasket ontop of the firering ? or taking it out and then put on the headgasket ?

      Hey mate. Nah you just completely swap the fire ring for the xv1000 style head gasket. The jugs on the 1000 have like an insert or part of the cylinder sleeve that fills the spot where the fire ring would normally be.

      Yeah so am I. Hahah sadly no more progress.
      Well the bike is in the shed on the lift but I’ve been overhauling an Johnson outboard motor for my tinny.
      But I’ve got everything ready to go.
      I would love to have it sorted before DGR in may.
      Should be possible. Might just pull a few early mornings before work! Stay tuned. It’s happening!

      @@mattfranco8715 I totally understand. I've started my rebuild project of the 750. To recap, the plan is to have an XV920R (chain drive) case, with the 1000 cylinders and gen 2 starter components. So far, I've completely disassembled the 1000 and installed the 920R transmission in the 920R case (I bought the case and transmission separately). I currently have the crankshaft from the 1000 in the freezer. Hopefully after heating the 920R crankcase bearing seat I can coax the crankshaft into place.
      Regarding the 750 heads and cams, I was wondering if any benefits will be cancelled out by the fact that the valves are smaller. Any thoughts on the difference in valve size?

      @@paulanstett8852 hahah! Well you’ll be glad to know. Filming has begun 😂. Heads are swapped on and the compression is healthy to say the least.
      Motor should be back in the bike tomorrow maybe.
      Get excited!

      Oooft, that seems like such a good combo!
      I wish I went down that route! Maybe in the future I’ll have to build one.
      Yeah so from what I’ve heard/read it’s all about the low/mid range punch with the upgrade. The top end will suffer but honestly, I’m never up in that area anyway, these engines don’t want to be there anyway.
      I guess we shall find out!
