THANK YOU for the video on the screen arrestor. About ready to throw away a 10 year old Homelite weed eater. When I flipped the speed from 2 to 3 it would die. Removed the screen arrestor discovering it was 100% totally blocked with black hardened carbon. A wire brush wouldn't touch it, so I soaked the screen in solvent for two hours. Cleaned, I replaced it and was stunned how it fired up on the first pull, running exactly like it was brand new! Again....thank you for the video.
You threw the screen out haha. Isn’t it loud as hell. Why the heck you want something loud as shit cutting the grass sounding like some fireworks. It’s got an engine but I wish it purred like a hybrid like some future alien crap ha
my weed eater won't stay running but intel i watch your video on here start cleaning screen and got done and try it and now it run. Thank you for your helpful video.
I used to have this problem until I switched to non ethanol gas and opti 2 oil. I would clean the exhaust once a year, but I would take it all the way down and clean the muffler and the exhaust port as well.
If I had the engine apart, I would clean the piston top with a wire brush, also use a wire brush to clean the spark plug. Then I would clean the carb or replace the carb. And I’m sure it would fire up.
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
Thanks for this post brother I have a Honda line trimmer 4 stroke gx25 when I try to start it it starts for about 2 seconds and then it turns off if I don’t hit the gas and when I let go of the gas it turns off what do you think could be the issue? Cheers brother 🍻
That sounds interesting. Did you ever try cleaning the carburetor with carburetor cleaner? Maybe it's not getting enough fuel to stay on. Wish I could take it apart myself and find out for you. But I would start with cleaning the carburetor, and be careful not to tear any gaskets when you take it apart. Use a flat head to pry and remove the gaskets if they are stuck against the carburetor. Let me know anything.
So I’m guessing I should just invest in the 40:1 gas/oil like Trufuel. I put the quart you get with the weed eater and then filled the gas tank with as much gas as that little container will hold so I probably just screwed up the ratio causing the filter to get clogged. This is only my second time using it. I really appreciate that you explained how it could be the gas/oil because I never thought about that until I didn’t use it again for a few weeks. Thanks a lot dude
no problem. I enjoyed reading everything you said. you are a smart person with a lot of sense. I'm glad you figured it. this is probably going to be a comment ill remember forever.
Carb cleaner. Na, it’s mainly used to clear out ports, that’s why it evaporates and drys out quickly so nothing stays in the pipes. You’re supposed to use a degreaser. Then you can let it soak for a couple min and brush it off clean.
Thanks for such a detailed video! I had a quick question. My craftsman/Troy-built weed eater starts fine and runs fine for about 30 mins or so. When I shut it off to refuel or change the attachment it won’t start again… after letting it cool down for 5-10 minutes it will start but only run for maybe 30 seconds. Any thoughts on how I should troubleshoot? It’s a 4-stroke btw.
It sounds like the engine might be going bad on the inside. I'm not positive on this, but from what you're saying, maybe it could be on the inside of the motor. If it starts and runs fine for 30 mins, then shut it off to refuel and wont start again, it might be inside the motor, or could be the spark plug ignition magneto getting too too hot and becoming dead. The ignition magneto is the spark plug boot that you pop on the spark plug. Grab the boot and follow the wire back to where ever it leads too and that is the magneto at the end of that spark plug wire. maybe that is messed up. But I dont know. You make me want to figure this out too. Let me know whats going on more.
I cleaned the spark arrestor and it still does not stay running. I bought a new carburetor and no matter how I adjust it. It does not stay running, so what is the issue here?
I don’t know. I’d have to put my time into figuring it out. The machine has to be in front of me to diagnose it, then I’ll be able to help out. But if it doesn’t stay running, it could probably be the carburetor or the spark plug, or the fuel lines. Those are some of the places I would check for.
Thanks for this post. Quick question. Weed eater was working, but I refilled the weed eater with a different mix and afterwards it won't stay cranked. Could it still be the same thing or something different?
That's a good question. But I couldn't know. I would have to see the weed eater to diagnose it. But for the mix, you can use any kind of weed eater oil. It doesn't matter which brand, long as the oil is for 2 cycle/2 stroke engines. You will be fine. And make sure to follow the directions and use 2.6oz of 2 stroke oil per 1 gallon of 89octane gasoline.
@@ChrisSlack it will just be louder, thats all. much louder. but some states prohibit that. I dont think you would want to be holding that thing with it being that loud anyways.
I don’t know. All weed eaters get hot after they are cranked on. I’d have to have it in my hands to see why it shuts off though. There’s too many variables. I would check the carburetor if anything. Or check the spark arrestor screen that’s located inside the muffler. See if that’s clogged.
haha. i never changed the air filter in my life. lol probably a good enough time to do it since you said something haha. thanks. ordering some now. lol

You sure can remove the screen. But the weed eater will be much louder if you do. Lol try it out and see. But it might be too loud to your liking. If it is, you can clean the screen and replace it back on.
Yeah. It's probably louder isn't it. It's already loud with the spark arrestor screen on. I can imagine how much louder it is with it off. My neighbors would go crazy. Lol I think the screen is there to suppress the noise of the engine and not pollute the breathable air as much. Either way, I personally would keep the screen on because weed eaters are loud as crap. Lol
@@JohnDoe-ef3wo thats actually wrong, spark arrestors are located directly in the muffler, you can see it in the video. Its for emission control. to suppress the exhaust from coming out too much. thats why its louder when you take it off. more air is coming out.
