  • The Enigmata is a path that has been mentioned in game for a while now, but it seems now one of its pathstriders is in the forefront of the story. Hi, I'm Seraph Lore, and in this video I'll be talking about Mythus, the Aeon of the Enigmata.

    Very good look at Mythus!
As the Aeon and Path I would most likely follow myself It's really interesting to see people take Mythus at face value, or anything that is "said" by any of his Pathstriders as well. (Like you mentioned, people taking "I'm Thirteen." at face value is downright hilarious.) I've seen a fair amount of people refer to Mythus as a "god of gaslighting" and "ignorance" but I think many people are disregarding the absolutely nihilistic (heh) impact of Nous across the entire universe of HSR.
Nous is basically reducing the entire universe to a completely defined and extrapolated series of events.
There is no choice, no freedom, no hope, no faith, and no mystery allowed in a universe dominated by Nous. If Nous had his way and was able to completely simulate every possible future and every possible outcome from all choices (which brings up some weird overlap with Terminus as well as Elio) then there's really no point to living.
Mythus's biggest blessing to humanity is the gift of hope and mystery. Without his blessings beings like Nous and Terminus would define everything that can happen and reduce your entire life to a footnote without any importance.
Is there really any point to living a life when every single decision has been made for you? When every good, bad, and surprise event in your life has already been spoiled?
It's like the saying goes; "Optimization is the death of joy." THAT is the future that Nous desires.
Mythus's birth from Remembrance is incredibly important, in my opinion, as we often hear Memokeepers of Fuli talk about how "memory never lies" (which in an of itself is an odd thing to claim as people's memories become distorted easily, and memories are inherently filtered by our own perspectives and beliefs) but Mythus, being born OF and IN Remembrance (possibly an error in memory? Or a memory construct gaining awareness of itself?) states the exact opposite. That knowing all the facts of the past, and being able to precisely show what one thinks are both impossible and dangerous to seek as they erase all nuance and possibility from one's life. To live is to wonder. To exist is to not know.
Mythus is the gift of CHOICE. The blessing of POSSIBILITY. The ability to TELL STORIES. And the chance to BELIEVE.
If you look at Herta's Dev Log #2 for Nous she even states that Nous's seemingly infinite knowledge and planning frightened her and also that she found the very idea of Nous's goal to be rather disastrous (monotonous in her words, but for Herta that basically means really bad for everyone else), and that Stephen didn't even have a choice about joining the Genius Society. Nous wanted it and took the choice away from Stephen. (I wouldn't be surprised if Stephen might eventually become a follower of Mythus out of spite considering all he wants to do is make games and have fun, something that Nous basically strips the universe of the capability to do.
And if you look at the History Fictionologist Occurrence in the Simulated Universe the HF is one of the few non-Aeon beings who is completely aware that they're simulated, as if their own existence as a myth (hehe) basically allowed them an increased level of awareness of reality. (Which seemingly fits into Mythus's name being like Mythos, as in the Cthulhu Mythos where going "insane" allows one greater levels of cosmic awareness and power. Which seemingly fits into the Path of the Enigmata.)
The Curio Illusory Automaton makes one assume that the automatons are basically lifelike and "not real" in that they're just automatons, but what if they are born of symbolism, metaphor, and possibility themselves? They are potentiality and choice made real and given the power to make their own fates and do as they please, regardless of if they logically should exist or if the history they embody "actually" happened. Their existence makes their past real, and thus makes them just as real as the past that we call "real."
I think Mythus is the only thing keeping the universe from becoming just cogs in the machine that is called Nous. He is the only thing that prevents humanity from being ground up in the gears of a deterministic universe as championed by Nous.
Hell, Ena would have been more preferable to Mythus I believe than under Ena, there's Order, but in that Order there's still chance and choice. YOU make your choices but the world responds to you through Ena's Order. Nous's Erudition makes the choice FOR you.
Also, another interesting tidbit is that the Data Bank entry for the History Fictionologists being edited means that it was a probably a HF themselves who edited it, which means we can't trust ANYTHING about that data entry as being their real goals or ideals. And the same with the Riddlers. You can't trust anything said about them as being accurate, because you literally don't have to words to be able to accurately surmise their goals and ideals.
Sorry for the lengthy comment, I have a lot of feelings and theories about Mythus and seeing someone actually point out a nuanced understanding of his ideals and Path is rare from the videos I've seen.
    Regardless, great job! :D

Great video! Will you ever post like and update of the lore from story quest by now? Due to the time between quests (and my problems with memory) I find really hard to keep track with everything so It would be so friggin' cool to see a video about this!
