Now 59 years since the 62 MAS first diver from Seiko, is this SPB451 the new standard for every new Seiko dive watch to come out in the future? New movement, sleeker, smoother and refined, could this be the best Seiko release of 2024?

Seiko is truly one of the only brands that actually listen to what their customers are saying. Smaller, thinner, longer power reserve and smaller clasps. You got it! Seiko prices out of control you say? Well how about zero price increases from 4 years ago. I’d like to see the Swiss try to do that. The Swiss doesn’t seem to care about what people are asking for and they keep raising prices with no added value to the product. Seiko is indeed one step ahead!

Idk, when talking about the $1000 price range their are other brands offering better movements and the same quality fit and finish, i love seiko but I’m starting to discover at $1000 and up their are better brands out there

@@shtzweakI can definitely see others may be better brands but I also feel anything over $1000 becomes more for the hard core Seiko collectors. What something is worth depends on how much you love it. It takes a special customer to play in that price range.

Interesting timing of this video, I literally just unboxed the San Martin SN007-G-X which I got to wear on holidays where I don't want to wear a Rolex, Tudor, etc to some sketchy locations (specifically Barcelona this time around).
It's basically a direct copy/homage to the original 62mas in a 37mm case and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with how it feels for a 300 bucks watch.
Should serve me well on the trip and hopefully not attract any unwanted attention...it's still very shiny, so I hope the thieves eyes see good enough to understand that it's not a very valuable watch lol...

It would certainly appear so but out of curiosity I did some digging and looked up the original pricing of the 62mas-010 and it was roughly $85ish dollars in 1965. With inflation that's about $830ish dollars in 2024. With a superior movement, sapphire crystal , AR coating, metal bracelet, and improved depth rating, the improvements and cost of materials comes much closer to the price that they are asking. This is MSRP and not the gray market most people take advantage of when getting their Seiko fix anyway so the pricing difference becomes even closer to the original. My AD is usually fairly generous with discounts on Seiko so there is also that to consider. One can purchase this new for $950-$1000 with the same minimal effort I put in when searching for this model online.

This always comes up with some people and ignores reality. They always complain when newer releases cost more, and ignore all the upgrades. Movement upgrades, bracelet upgrades, case upgrades, and you expect them not to raise price for those upgrades? You expect them to do all that research and development and machine retooling, and not have that reflected in the costs? It's just not rational.

I have the 140th anniversary edition of the 62 mas it has a 39.7mm diameter and a beautiful silver white dial. The bezel goes from almost black to royal blue depending on the light. Taking your advice about Seikos I sent it back to Seiko as the 6R35 movement was out of tolerance at -35 seconds per day. When Seiko returned the watch to me it was running at -20 seconds per day. This does not say much for Seiko's service department. I think these Seiko 62MAS watches are lovely but Seiko have to get their act together and regulate their watches. When you think of it you can buy an Aliexpress $50 Seiko NH35 powered watch that keeps +\- 5 seconds per day I have 4 like that. Lets hope the new movement lives up to yours. Japanese style, they don’t want to lose face so they under promise in the specs. I have several 4R and 6R that run +4/5 seconds per day (regulated but it deteriorates when they reach the last hours of the reserve). Great looking watch. I have the older gilt version and I've always hated that 3hz tick. It looks cheap and as if its malfunctioning. Really wish Seiko would just release a 4hz version. Love the sz and that blue looks glorious.

This watch is a solid $700 watch due to the tighter tolerance 6R movement and overall watch build quality.
I don’t see a justification for a higher price. Bracelet-case interface leaves a lot to be desired and as mentioned before, the clasp is a no go. Seiko could make this a 4hz movement, but I guess that’s a lost battle. At least 6R movement is an improvement, but still not as good a the equivalent ETA movements in the Swatch group IMO.
I do like the 4:30 position of the date window. Functional and subtle, without breaking dial symmetry.

The wife's comments were 😬!!! I tried this exact model at my AD and really love the tweaks they did to the watch. It wore beautifully on my 7 inch (17.8cm) wrist, but I also liked the old model on wrist. This is just a touch more compact. I really feel like these changes make it the Seiko Prospex (not Seiko Luxe) equivalent of a Submariner, except a hair more than 1/10th the price. I am definitely tempted with this blue one, though I also would love to get a Doxa and I have 5 Seikos already (1 diver). Decisions, decisions...

Like the new size reduction and refined bracelet links, however I still prefer my SPB143 over this for a few reasons. 1) The old version had a much nicer and more durable stainless steel hard-coated bezel insert (the new one is cheap painted aluminum), 2) The grey sunburst dial is much nicer and true to the original, 3) the old one has several micro adjust holes where the new one only has 2 holes for micro-adjustments (the new shorter clasps suck).

I need to see this one in person... finally a seiko Diver for my wrist. Incidentally, I say that wearing the 45mm Turtle right now, which actually wears OK (but not stellar) for my 6,5" wrist, but I love it anyway. When you compared it to the BB58 (which I do not own, have tried on, and want eventually) I have to say the Seiko blue just trounced it. The problem with Seiko, is stated accuracy specs, even though they are often much better, but still, and the dreaded misaligned bezels. I don't care for the date position on this one, and I agree about the 3 day text, kinda cheesy and who gives a flip... That said, I do want to check this one out. It looks good (to me).

I bought an Orient Kamasu (which has a conspicuously similar blue face) for $263 and a Jubilee style bracelet from Amazon for $21 and it is by and large a nicer watch. Nice Seiko, I suppose, but I'd rather take all the extra dough and buy a couple standout micros.

I still think £1,200 is too much for this kind of watch. I brought a Seiko Alpinist recently for £530... essentially the same movement and 200m water resistance. This was much better value for money. Date window here is even more of an afterthought then previous iterations but the dimensions seem more wearable.

Would worth peeking behind the caseback: it has a plastic spacer around the movement… I think no plastic parts should be in a mechanical watch, especially not above 1000 GBP…

Im quite lucky i own a sla043. New price in 2020 was £4080. I purchased mine used for £2350 in november 2020. These £1200 seikos are expensive , but id urge you to go the extra mile and get the sla versions. The difference is night and day . This model is nice , but the sla models are incredible, just dont buy new. My sla043 is my favourite watch , and ive got tags , rados , tudors etc. If you want a great dive watch , then buy a rado captain cook used for around £1200 or less. On the beads of rice bracelet , they are amazing. Go for the green or blue and you cant go wrong.

I'd prefer if this had 4R35 instead of the Seiko's notorious 6R movement. Of course the price should be much lower also. Only 4R's for me until Seiko can make a reliable 6R (or whatever) movement for this price point.
The watch itself looks awesome though.🔥

    • @joeschlicht
      @joeschlicht หลายเดือนก่อน

The 4R in my Turtle is has been quite reliable and fairly accurate for Seiko. I wound it and put it on today after having not worn it for a quite a while and as of right now, it's less than a second slow from when I set this morning. Not too bad. I'd take a 4R and paying less over the 6R at this price.... I do think this new 62MAS is a good looking watch is a good size for my wrist.

Seiko seem to be aiming this one more at their existing desk-diver/muff-diver enthusiast community than at actual skin divers or real men. But I do love a reimagined, reimagined Seiko as much as the next man. 🤷‍♂

Seiko needs to drop the minute markers on the bezel and it would look much better!!! If you look at all the top luxury divers, there are only 5min markers in the bezel instead of every minute.

I always love What The Wife Said. She's wrong this time though. It's a classy diver. I really like it. Really do dislike the "3 Days" text though. That really cheapens it the way Casio's "10 Year Battery" cheapens Casios. And that brings me to price. Puhleez... that's a $350 watch. Not several times that. Getting very tired of Seiko insulting us with their pricing. Especially after insulting us how they do with their QC...

I have a phone if I want to know the date, to me mechanical watches are jewellery, a no date watch looks better IMO - more symmetrical - and no need to set a date (and potentially doing damage to the mechanism when setting it at the wrong time etc.). This is a nice looking watch but a no buy: I'll just spend the funds on a holiday instead 😀

Save yourself a load of money with Fifty Four 62mas homage. The case is the same size as the original. You have a choice of an aluminium or ceramic bezel and the finish is superb. NH35 movement. I wanted a version as close to the original as possible, so I chose the aluminium bezel. Lume embarrasses Seiko. All for around £250! Oh and there's a grey dial!!
