I have a Seiko solar diver. My only diver. It looks great. I don’t dive and I’m sure 90+% of diver owners don’t dive either. I also wouldn’t use a GMT or chrono as intended. Give me a solid build, solid movement, stylish watch that tells the time. That’s all I need.
Great analysis. I really like the SJE093, it's a beautiful watch. However, I'm with you. There is someting about the SPB143 that is truly special, and the grey dial is a knockout. You've made me feel better about my decision, and it's on my list. Thank you!
Ohhhhh My oh my did you nail this comparison. So much information packed into this analysis. Thank you for demystifying these Seiko models. You have validated my reasons for why I’ve decided to keep my SPB. Thank you for your hard research; keep up the amazing work. Best, AKA - Mr Valjoux
I bought a SPB143 four months ago and I wear it for around 98% of the time. :) I was hesitant at first cause I thought it won't work on my 7.5" wrist and most of my watches are 42/44 mm, but man it changed my mind completely! Love it so much. I even bought an OEM black rubber strap for it. It's just a killer watch!!!
Fantastic analysis. I have never handled the "premium" 62MAS offerings but I have the SPB143 and it's fantastic. I find myself staring at it in awe of its beauty. On the bracelet it's very good but on a good rubber tropic, it's amazing. If I could design my own watch, it would be the SPB143.
Good choice! The 62mas versions, really are VERY good but the often feel a bit "premium" and not necessarily in a good way. They lose a bit of the tool vibe, but quality wise there's no doubt you get a better built watch 😀
Very nice overview and review! I have a 62MAS, SLA017 and SJE093 love them all for slightly different reasons. The 6L37 movement seems to be quite accurate by many reports. Mine is running at +2 sec/day over the last month I've had it. The finish on the SJE093 is the same as the SLA017 which is not far off from grand seiko standards. I let the SLA017 go due to size.
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch From my research on seiko movements, the 6L is not slimmer version of 6R. The 6L is a modern production of their 4L movements which was designed to compete against swiss ones like ETA 2892. It was meant to be the mid range movement until they started introducing the 6R. The 6R is just an upgrade of the 4R.
The SJE093 is perfect. I don’t feel it on my wrist and the more I wear it the more stunning it looks. It’s not a cheap watch but it’s still in the price range where it can be used as a tool watch without worrying about scraping it up. I usually wear 41mm and up but this petite skin diver makes me feel like I’m getting more sophisticated in my taste and I like the direction I’m going. Bigger was always better but not anymore 🍻
Absolutely love my 143. You are correct about your observation of the 143. I love it and can’t see myself getting any other model. I have a 6.5 wrist and it fits me well.
Thanks for the information. Tremendous review and a great conclusion with the 143 being the logical winner in you eyes. I’ve been looking at these for awhile and I’m going to finally purchase thanks to this review.
Totally Stunned - for once I agree with everything you said 🙂 There is much that could be said for honest products, not status symbols, sold at a fair price . . . These products are often difficult to identify with minimal advertising
Great video and content is on point, got me to subscribe. In 2021 I added the SPB239 variant with aftermarket rubber strap to my watch collection. It’s been my daily driver since, it's traveled all over the world with me. I hike, swim, snorkel, climb etc with it. This watch always gives me the feeling that it's capable of what I will throw at it and therefore my go to tool watch. I expect it to be the most worn watch from my collection long into the future.
Hearing about all the QC issues over the years with Seiko, ive been reluctant to get one. In recent weeks, ive ended up with two! The SRPF77K1 and the SPB315J1. The latter has become my most worn watch, slim, comfortable and just looks so nice. I love the brushed finish a real tool watch.
So very much my thoughts on the Seiko Alpinists recreation versus modern re-interpretation. One is luxury, other is true to the original, which was an affordable GADA watch, both for office and hiking in the mountains. But the way you word it, and argue the case is as always a pleasure!
Absolutely compelling and interesting video. I was bracing myself for you to say the more expensive SLA is the only one to own, but was very pleasantly surprised when you said you prefer the spb. There's an honesty and truth to wanting what was original but for the modern day, a brilliant video! As a side note, people complain about the movement of a seiko but after you run it for a couple of months I've found that the tolerance is between +10 and - 10 a day on all mine.
Like those comparisons like taking a ride for example. And like always product analysis and product placement analysis at a level of the highest on yt🎉🤝🏅. All back up with real enthusiast attitude. Watched it with pleasure. Thanks
Thanks for the video, it was interesting. I have a Seiko SPB149, and an SLA037. We can probably derive and apply a few things to the SPB143/SJE093 comparison you’re making, since the finishing of the SJE093 looks similar to the one of the SLA037. The SPB149 is basically the limited version of the SPB14x line. The SLA037 is the most high end of the 62MAS recreations - everbrillant steel case, 8L55 which is a Grand Seiko 9s85 movement, but less decorated, and not regulated+adjusted. I initially bought the SPB149 because I wanted the SLA037, but did not want to pay 6.5k for the SLA037. I’m going to try to make a fair comparison between the two by breaking it down between parts: - Price: $1200 vs $6500. After owning the SLA037, do I think the price is justified? Mostly yes. It’s my favorite watch, my daily wearer. Do I think the SPB149 gets you 90% of the SLA037 for one fifth of the price? Also yes. But these extra 10% make me love the SLA three times more than the SPB. - Case finishing: The SLA is heaps and bounds above the SPB. The case edges are sharper, the brushing on the top is nicer, the polished parts are flatter, the angles are sharper. Lug holes are also better finished (truly round) on the SLA, ovoid on the SPB. - Dial finishing: Both are very well finished and very, very similar. The sunray effect is similar, the “powdery” effect too. Both have stamped indices (a legacy of the original 6217, to prevent indices from getting loose while diving), but the indices on the SLA are much more nicely finished. The angles and flat surfaces are more defined, the lume has been added inside of the indices and not on top like the SPB, and they have a black mirror finish to them - it’s pretty incredible in real life. The lume is also incredible on the SLA (the best lume I’ve ever seen), while it is a bit meh on the SPB. - Chapter ring: The SLA has a polished chapter ring that is incredible to look at, it just reflects everything like a mirror. The SPB has a brushed chapter ring. These differences are there by design, but the result is there. - Hands: The hands finishing is comparable - the hands on the SPB have that half-brushed, half polished finish that looks super nice. The SLA has polished hands with bezels on both sides, which also look incredible. - Date window: the SLA has a frame around the date- that is the same frame used on some Grand Seiko models, with bead blasted bevels and polished top. The SPB has no frame, and the opening in the dial has bevels, that are not particularly well finished. The printing on the date wheel is better finished on the SLA - it is the same date wheel as on the Grand Seikos with an 9S85 - silver date wheel with small striations. The SPB has a white date wheel. The printing is also sharper on the SLA. - Crown: the SLA crown is signed and polished, while the SPB crown is unsigned and brushed. Finishing on the SLA is better, under a loupe the part where you grip the crown looks rough, while on the SLA it’s been polished and is smoother. - Caseback: on the SLA is just laser-etched, which is a let down vs. the embossed caseback on the SPB. I wish the SLA had the SJE embossed caseback. - Crystal: The SLA crystal is much nicer. It has a higher dome, which gives a lovely distortion at the edges, while the SPB is just slightly raised - this is a design choice, and just my preference. What’s different though, is the antireflective coating on the crystals. The crystal on the SLA seems to be 100% transparent at all angles, while the SPB seems to miss a tiny bit of light transmission, and becomes milky as you angle the watch. - Wearability: the SPB sits flatter on the wrist, it is almost a millimeter shorter in height than the SLA. The SLA sits taller because the caseback is higher vs. the position of the lugs than on the SPBN. - - Adjustments: The SLA has tighter tolerances than the SPB. There is no gap between the bezel and the case on the SLA, while there is a slight gap on the SPB. The bezel clicks are nicer on the SLA, with no play. It is a big difference in tactile feel. Bezel finish is superb on the SLA, with laser-etched numbers on the DLC-coated insert. On the SPB, the insert is radially brushed, DLC-coated and the numbers are filled with paint. - - Bracelet: the SPB149 strap is very nice, but the SLA037 strap is even nicer, it feels a bit more rigid. The buckle is better finished on the SLA. Buckle is similar. - Movement: The 6r35 in my SPB149 shows a LOT of positional variance. Also, I can’t seem to get the same deviation every day. One day it will do +2, the next day -3, with no perceptible difference in what I do with the watch (for example, 2 work days), which makes me think that temperature, or knocking the watch might affect it. In the SLA, I have between +0 to +1 s/day, no matter what, it is rock solid. The movement is not adjusted in multiple positions but shows little variance, from -1 to +2s/day across all six positions. I hope this helps. I agree that the price of the SLAs/SJE093 seems pretty crazy at first, but once you have it in your hand it becomes clear that these watches are in a different league. The problem is the perception of the brand - they do watches from $100 to $8000, so people don’t see the brand as capable of delivering amazing quality - also they have their fair share of QC issues on low/mid-tier watches… Rolex, for example, only has one quality level - very high, which helps to perceive the brand very positively. They’re also the best at marketing and creating interest & demand, but that’s another topic… All this to say… try to get your hands on a high-end Seiko - they’re really comparable to some of the Omega, Rolex &co. Thanks again for the video 😊
Just watched the end of the video, we actually agree on a few points. I'm a bit surprised that you prefer the SPB143 but understand the reasons, if you make a direct comparison to the 6217.
Thanks - Glad you enjoyed it Yeah. Watches are a subjective thing, so despite the SJE objectively being better on pretty much any standard (movement, design, finishing), - I still prefer the SPB. That's the fun with watches. It doesn't have to be the most expensive one that always is the one the connects most 😃😃
Spb147 is my Seiko of choice currently. On a leather strap, vintage look, gilt hands and indices, accessible pricing, skin diver aesthetics it’s a great everyday piece. I’m not a fan of the movement however this one has been good to me and I feel as if I’ve been fortunate in that respect. Great video, informative comparison.
This is one of the best explained and reasoned videos on Seiko divers I have ever seen. Wow man! You crushed it and somehow captured the very essence of each model!
I really like the way Mr. "This Watch, That Watch" see things and I find myself listening to his videos while doing my IRL things. It's like listening to a person that you can learn a lot of things from. 👌
A few years ago you could get a Grand Seiko for $4k, now Seiko wants that for a 62MAS... As you said it might be because it is better finished with higher QC but its a tough ask given the movement. I agree with you that the SPB143 is simultaneously worse on paper but better on wrist. Sticking with your car analogy - The new mini might be fancier and sleeker but the old one will most definitely get you from Joburg to Cape Town without being put on a tow truck. That being said the SJE093 is a very pretty watch but I remain unconvinced that its worth buying. Have a great weekend!
On my wrist as I watch your video is the SLA043. I really like the 62 MAS. I had another 62MAS reinterpretation, SBDC051. The SBDC051 was my "tool watch", not that I do much 'tooling' these days. I agree that the Seiko name is associated with the common man, get it done, mass consuming ethos, and I love that, so much that I have had many Seiko's in my life. The watch on my wrist on my wedding day was a Seiko kinetic. The SLA043 was different. It highlights the best of Seiko (I am purposefully not mentioning Grand Seiko). The SLA series are not for mass consumption like Tudor BB or the Rolex Submariner. The SLA series are limited show case pieces (at least with the SLA017, 037, and 043). The mass Seiko consumer base will never know or care if these exist. Most will be satisfy with the SK5 series and would pinch their nose at the thought of paying $1k for the SPB or $4k for the SLA. As I grow more mature in my adoration for the watch hobby, this SLA will be my last Seiko.
Alwasy great comments... my SJE is +6spd... SPB 451 +12. My 143 (as you, I really loved them) were just all over the place (I tried 3) and they went from a near perfect example to +45.
Recently bought an SPB297 and I love it. That is because I first bought an SPB253 last year and I though that is such a lovely watch. And I totally agree with the movements. 6R35 on my black limited edition is so way off the specs! And the one on SPB297 is so precise! Anyways, great video, great analysis. I really enjoy your videos.
I'm in agreement with you. I currently have a JDM SPB 143 and have worn it daily since purchase this spring. I haven't had any of the usual alignment complaints, nor the substantial regulation issues often commented on (perhaps as it is a JDM model?). The watch has admirably stood up to the rigors of sailing, diving and general life on the water with little signs of wear. Having owned several rolexs and a couple of omegas, I find it quite liberating to wear a very serviceable watch that I can wear without concern for it's well being. I always removed my watch before diving to clean the boat bottom, now the thought never crosses my mind. And the watch looks good on land as well. For all the commentary one sees bitching about the price of the SPB143 (?!?) I find it laughable. It's a 1k watch that does all (and more) that my 5-14k watches did without having to baby it. Cheers.
Great video! I say as I'm wearing my SPB143 on a Crown & Buckle Black with Grey NATO. I think the SJE093 is a beautiful watch but I just love my 143; I wear it unapologetically and it just works. Mine is very accurate (especially while wearing it) and lines up like a dream. I have more watches than I should but this and my Baltic Aquascaphe in blue gilt see the most wrist time. Reliable work horses that look great and I just don't worry about them.
Interesting analysis at the end of your upload. That was exactly the reason for me to choose the spb143. And then also for the gray dail. For a moment I thought it was just me. We drive a (new) Fiat 500 btw, Mea Culpa.
Great analysis. I wouldn’t consider changing out my SPB147 on an uncle seiko bracelet. Yes, it has a flaw, bezel pip not centered in the 12 o’clock triangle, but mine is surprisingly accurate and the branding of this model melts away into the dial which makes one focus on the aesthetic of the watch. Great analogy re. Volkswagen / Mini. I couldn’t agree more with you assessment.
I just bought the SPB239 (the nato strap version) and really love it on the tan strap. And I guess I’ve gotten lucky, because it’s running very accurate! I did come in with low expectations of the movement, and because of that, I viewed the value for money as a bit low (especially compared to some of my other seikos like the original Alpinist). But it was a celebration purchase for myself and I decided to go with my gut. I’m very happy with the decision so far and will try it out on a leather strap soon. :) thanks for the video!
Mike, great video. If you haven’t already, you MUST put a Seiko MM300 ratcheting clasp with diashield coating on your SPB143. TOTALLY changed the wearing experience for me.
I very much liked your video. It was knowledgable and well thought out. As it happens, I don‘t have the same preferences as you. I prefer an upscale diver with great design language and a very solid movement with virtually no positional variance that‘s not well known. For me this was the SLA043.
Nice analysis and well-argued point of view. Thanks. I've had the SLA043 for a year+ on an aftermarket strap and enjoyed it a lot. Is it almost fancy enough to be a Grand Seiko? Yep. Does that compromise it's tool watch vibe? Not for me. I hike, swim, climb, and bang around in it because it is a tool watch -- even if it is better made than its progenitor. It looks gorgeous, the dial is brilliant, as is the bezel. Would I be happier with a watch that was more faithful to the 62MAS because its bezel did not line up, the movement was basic Volkswagen, and the finish was uninspiring? I've had a few of those from Seiko. They are fine, but gone now. Sure they were faithful. They were also boring. And the SLA043 isn't.
I’ve always believed watch enthusiasts to be romantics, whether we acknowledge it or not. What you said about the SPB143 is exactly why. Sometimes appreciating a watch doesn’t have anything to do with logic, rather it’s the idea of a watch’s essence that we fall in love with. The higher end models might be more visually pleasing and well built successors of the 62MAS but the SPB143 is the true spiritual successor.
I enjoy your breakdown and agree with your conclusion. Though because I held off for awhile now the SPB451 is out. While at first I didn’t like the 3 days on the dial I recently held one. I was really taken by it and think it’s certainly a worthy contender.
100%. And, not spending $$$ and then having to worry about getting a scratch on it while wearing it. SPB is the Seiko diver to have, enjoy and not stress about. It's about FUN! (Not worries.)
I just got my SPDC101 (SPB143) yesterday from Sakura watches. You are right on all accounts. I also have a BB58, that I just don't wear anymore. I like the Seiko much better than the Tudor. The SPB143, just has that everyday/every occasion feel. The guilded indices and the faux patina on the BB58 just doesn't lend itself to everyday wear.
I was debating on getting the latest 62MAS reissue or the new BB54. Happy I went with the 54, because it's +2 consistently, has no flaws, the new clasp is amazing, and being a bracelet person, I appreciate the rivet style bracelet (to the dismay of many, I love rivet bracelets). The 60 click bezel is a beaut and a pleasure to use. You contrast that with the latest 62MAS's movement accuracy and lack of a bracelet, coupled with having less access to service centers and overall customer service, it's clear the Tudor wins. And it looks like a dive watch from the 50s, albeit with modern upgrades. Nonetheless, the latest 62MAS, like earlier releases, is another limited edition. It's a niche market. It will sell out. If I see someone with a 62MAS on their wrist, I know, like me, they are a wristwatch enthusiast. It is a beautiful watch (I have a crush on it). I'm sure the 6L37 movement will make most happy. It doesn't need a bracelet, and looks best on a tropic strap. Seiko would make the entire wristwatch community happy if they gave the 62MAS a complete Grand Seiko treatment by upgrading the movement, putting a modern bracelet in the box in addition to the tropic strap, and most importantly, drop the limited edition nonsense. It would be nice to see the 62MAS as a permanent model to compete with Tudor, Omega, etc. Great vid. Thx
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. From the time I finished the video till I prepped it for upload the 62mas was sold out. If I had decided to get it, I would have had to have been a lot faster. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it vs the bb 😀
What a fantastic take. And I say that as someone who happily threw down for the SLA043 (which I still wear constantly), but I can't find any argument against your conclusion that the SPB is the more honest choice.
I have both the 093 and 143 and neither replaces the other. I still love my spb. The finishing on the sje is on another level. Seiko is conservative with their accuracy but I’m getting +/- 2 sec a week, the 6L37 is a luxury movement. A thin movement is difficult to produce. My spb was +/- 4-6 and then I dropped it so I had it regulated and now i’m getting almost the same timing as my sje. I feel like both watches are worth the money especially considering how limited the sje is but the spb is such good value and worth every penny.
Agree about the design.. but if would have to choose between that one and the bb54 .. bb54, at least for the effort/design of the bracelet which is a big difference. And no risk of alignement issues on the bb54
Excellent comparison, tremendously informative. This review played a big role in me purchasing the SPB143 this morning. Well that and a heavy discount! 😁 Bezel alignment is acceptable and no marks on the dial from what I can see. Minute hand looks a little rough. Hopefully the 6R lottery works in my favour, but overall, this is a more elevated version of what I'd imagine the original diver felt like in the mid 1960's. It has just the right amount of shine/flash without compromising its tool aesthetic, and the case finishing is far better than Seiko's sub-1000 USD divers. Overall, a great watch that I look forward to wearing on rotation.
Best discussion of 62MAS iterations I have seen full of keen insight and rare perspective. The SPB143 as you state steals the day because of its price point and honesty relative to its refined aesthetic and appeal. That said, the only Seiko I own is the Tuna 300m Seiko Prospex MarineMaster Tuna SBBN033 due to its unique charm and incredible Quartz accuracy at its price point. I just can't stand Seiko movements other than the NH-35 which are ubiquitous because they work as you say and being inexpensive, their wild fluctuation in accuracy is more or less permitted. To me, Seiko screws the pooch with their so-called higher end movements. In the $4K price point, I vastly prefer Tudor...pick one BB58 and not the 54, or Ti Pelagios an Omega or another with 'an accurate and regulated movement' where you get something for your dollar over and above a refined dial and case but crappy movement. Also, can't help but think of the appeal of perhaps the most iconic dive watch of all time the SKX-007 as you describe the 143...which fits the everyman characteristic you explain however on steroids. People look past the inaccurate, non-hackable, not windable movement in the 007 for its utter simplicity and durability and to me, still one of the best look diving watches that has ever been created.
Thanks for the feedback - appreciated 😃😃 You have a relevant point about their higher end movements. They're higher end, but then... not really. It's a problem for them 😃
If they would cost the same I would buy the SEJ because it is from a design perspective closer to the original. But I totally agree with you because of the price and the tool watch feeling the SPB is emotionally closer to the original 62MAS. Great Review!
I agree! After many years of owning a Black Bay ETA Black 🌹 and many Seiko Turtles and SKX's I could never settle on the perfect 'everymans' diver...Until I bought the SPB143... For me its perfect and it's the watch I reach for the most. I've recently put it on a black rubber strap and it's like a new watch! It hits the sweet spot of quality, value, accuracy, beauty, utilitarianism, old school charm and comfort. It's a handsome beast and I won't be downgrading or upgrading to another Seiko diver for the foreseeable future. A great video my friend 😊
@@daveLin104 I put an original Seiko black silicone strap on mine and it looks PERFECT. I took it off an SPB147 that I bought. Maybe you could source one from a Seiko dealer.
100% agree 👍 Refreshing for a watch enthusiast/influencer to not only praise the virtues of models at lower price points, but also to occasionally prefer one. Makes me feel better about choosing the SNE589 over the SPB143 - as I feel its design & price better convey utilitarian workhorse over precision and refinement. (Still saving up for that Daytona tho😁)
Recently picked up 65mas black series SPB253 and am loving it. $800 brand new from an authorized dealer. At that price, the 6R35 is more palatable. $1200 is just too much. Happy to report that nothing is misaligned! 👌🏼😅
I paid that for my SJE083 king seiko and still really happy with the quality of it. I like this 093 release but, for me, I wish it was much cheaper so I could wear it like it’s meant to be worn without worry. I’m okay with spending more money on dress watches as I know they won’t get banged about as much and of course they are meant to feel refined and luxurious.
I love King Seikos. I have an SJE089. It's a beautiful watch. It has a vintage feel to it. But shines like a diamond. I loved it so much, I bought a second one to keep in storage as a backup. If I could only own one watch, it would definitely be that one.
100% agree with your commentary. The SPB 143 is one of the best Seiko Divers over made imo. Despite it's imperfections, the pros outweigh the cons and it's a pleasure to wear. I own the SPB 143 and SPB 213 and enjoy both. Have you seen the JDM SBDC163? It's a Royal Blue dial 62 mas. It looks amazing. I'm surprised it was never released to the international market bc it would give the SPB 143 run for it's money in terms of popularity. Cheers.
Great stuff buddy! I really like the 62mas., as well as these reinterpretations. Though, I still think they’re a bit overpriced (and I’m not a big fan of that Prospex logo), so… I’m getting all AliExpress unbranded aftermarket parts and Seiko mod my own homage watch. 😉
Great explanation, many here will agree that these are all wonderful references of the 62Mas, I owned the 017, 037, 043, 143, and now the SJE093 and hands down my favorite. The Seiko SJE093 the small, thinner and compact. It has excellent finish and my example gains only one second over day which is on par with my Glashutte Sea Q 39Mm in solid red gold, and the GO caliber is no joke. My 62Mas purchases end here, I hope.
I doubt it. Seiko will sell you one more, I'm sure of it - You seem to be in hook line and sinker with those models (which is cool - They are great ) 😃😃😃
Well it is a difficult question to answer. I have a spb239j which I like but the sje093 is more looking like to the orginal both size wise and internal dial wise yes it is more luxurious but still has that vibe. The spb collection does not give me that history feeling that’s why I believe I will get the sje093
As always such a well made video! Thanks! And I am again enlightened by you, I know nothing about Seiko, but will definitely get one as a beater, tried the one for about 500 usd called blueberry and it felt terrible, crappy bracelet and finish, it felt cheap, and, maybe thats beacuse it is haha. I call my Tudor Ranger my daily beater and tool watch, but my real tool watch is actually my Casio diver, when I swim, or do stuff up in my cabin, thats the go to, dont tell anyone…😂 But definitely gonna look at Seiko and your video made me think again that the best bang for the buck, for me at least, is still Tudor, hopefully getting the bb54 shortly, have a great sunday my friend and sorry about the loooong and boring comment! Your video was awesome!
The 62mas is a great design and I should have one but…….Seiko really needs to work on movement accuracy and bracelets. I expect a little more from watches costing over $1000usd. Seiko designs are unique and deserve respect but I always get the feeling they fall short on some quality metrics. Great video as always 😎! Best regards
Seiko makes some "interesting" decisions regarding quality for sure. I've actually got a vid upcoming that adresses that topic. Hopefully it will drop in the next two weeks. Cheers as always 😀😀😀
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Hi Mike, I was saving for one of the Seiko 62MAS descendants. Then, I found and was besotted by a re-release of a Precista Royal Navy Diver from 1982 with a SW-200 movement for £495 and forgot the Seiko.
I am really attracted to SLA037 and SJE039's bubble sapphire glass. I think the bubble sapphire glass just makes the watch "pop". If it has display caseback, the watch will be perfect. It doesn't but it is not a deal breaker.
Hah! I have just had a parallel journey with the 6105 'Willard', except unlike you I found the SLA033 version was the one. Mainly because the case size, true to the original, is larger than the SPB237 and properly 'plump' (thank you Jeffrey McMahon!), unlike the slightly reinterpreted SLA Uemura version. Let's face it, the 6105 is all about the case... Great analysis, and you might enjoy Jeffrey for a refreshing perspective on the watch collecting obsession.
Lots of people bitching about qc but has anyone actually had qc issues with and SJE line watch?? I doubt it... There are many videos of this sitting next to a bb54 and the finishing details make the bb54 look cheap
I had to return my SJE093. It had a little crack in the date disc that could be visible between 1 and 31. Just frustrating after the effort of finally getting one. BUT I have to say that I also returned a BB54 because of a misaligned lume pip.
I love and have many seiko divers ,why do they struggle to line up the bezel, ive just spent a grand on the SPB239J1 and its not happening , ive learnt so much about my love of dive watches in a few minutes watching your video, i DO have taste after all ,thanks for sharing
Bro you made a 14 min video to convince the world and you in the process that you made the right choice I agree it’s the right choice for you but for me since I can’t afford a Rolex I’ll take Seiko that I can afford a beat up 13 year old kinetic skx371 that I recently had serviced I pick it up tomorrow after it being stored for years it’s running like new 😂 btw I enjoy your videos
In truth, I'm half way through getting the components to build a mod. SKX013 size, but using a GMT NH34 cause they seem super accurate. Will hopefully have an original dial though.
If seiko had originally realeased the 62mas in a 39/40mm case with aluminium bezel , with a bracelet and 6r movement , keeping to the original slim bezel design and dot lumepit and priced it at about $999 , it would of been seikos greatest triumph. They could have still done the sla versions for people with deeper pockets !!! My favourite is the sla043, i love the everbright steel , the deep blue dial that changes in the sunlight , and the baby blue seconds hand gives it a modern twist . And its 39.5mm case is perfect. Whilst the new version is the closest to the original , i feel the 38mm size doesnt work on my 7.5 inch wrist. Great if you have small wrists though.
You likely have a point, but that’s the whole thing with Seiko - make sure the premium option isn’t in direct competition with a cheaper option. Keeps everything desirable. Cheers 😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch yes that is what I meant, thanks. And I'm in the same boat as I have the 143 as well. Interesting that Seiko offered different colorways with this new iteration. Presumably not to anger those of us that have the older versions. But the grey dial of the 143 is perfect IMHO. Love your reviews btw. As others have said, you're one of, if not, the most sensible watch reviewer on YT. Keep up the excellent work! Cheers.
It’s a tropic style strap. Don’t remember where I got it specifically but watchobsession sells something very similar as does zuludiver Sure they can be found elsewhere as well. 😀
I have a 6R35 in a presage that was running +2 seconds a day, took it on a flight and now it’s running -30 seconds a day. Sent it to Seiko and they sent it back saying it’s fine. Have tried to demagnetise it myself with a very cheap demagnetiser and did nothing. I’m not sure if that is the problem however. Slightly fast is beautiful as you can just hack it every few days. Very slow is an annoyance. Will be taking it to my local horologist soon. Any other suggestions?
Take a 4 R or 6 R in for a service and they simply replace it in its entirety. My Emperor Tuna is a working watch ( Commercial Diver ) … the strap is nowhere near long enough to go over a dry bag and the movement isn’t exactly spot on however…. I still love it . Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that Seiko is in our hearts ?
I have a Seiko solar diver. My only diver. It looks great. I don’t dive and I’m sure 90+% of diver owners don’t dive either. I also wouldn’t use a GMT or chrono as intended. Give me a solid build, solid movement, stylish watch that tells the time. That’s all I need.
Great analysis. I really like the SJE093, it's a beautiful watch. However, I'm with you. There is someting about the SPB143 that is truly special, and the grey dial is a knockout. You've made me feel better about my decision, and it's on my list. Thank you!
And thanks for sharing! 👍😀
It's the 3mm larger dial and 1/3 of the price for me.
Simply the most down to earth and compelling analysis on TH-cam so far.
Thanks and cheers . Have no doubt you'll be happy with an SPB 😃😃
I bought a SPB143 four months ago and I wear it for around 98% of the time. :)
I was hesitant at first cause I thought it won't work on my 7.5" wrist and most of my watches are 42/44 mm, but man it changed my mind completely! Love it so much.
I even bought an OEM black rubber strap for it. It's just a killer watch!!!
Wow. The entire video was an excellent analysis, but your closing statements were outstanding! Well done, sir.
Nice.
Very nice!
This level of eloquence is how a weekend should starts.
Lol. Thanks 😀
That’s a strong point. The trend towards the original size is definitely the right way to go 😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch From my research on seiko movements, the 6L is not slimmer version of 6R. The 6L is a modern production of their 4L movements which was designed to compete against swiss ones like ETA 2892. It was meant to be the mid range movement until they started introducing the 6R. The 6R is just an upgrade of the 4R.
I have a SPB147, and I love it ! It’s on Uncle Seiko Z199.🔥
Got new for less than $900.
Great video !
Thanks for the praise. Appreciated 😀😀😀
Got myself the SPB 143 for xmas, you just made my day 😃
Good choice - enjoy 😃😃
The SJE093 is perfect. I don’t feel it on my wrist and the more I wear it the more stunning it looks. It’s not a cheap watch but it’s still in the price range where it can be used as a tool watch without worrying about scraping it up. I usually wear 41mm and up but this petite skin diver makes me feel like I’m getting more sophisticated in my taste and I like the direction I’m going. Bigger was always better but not anymore 🍻
Excellent review and thank you for being real about the SPB143. I’m keeping mine too!
It's on my wrist as we speak. IT's an amazing watch and a true tool 😃😃
Totally Stunned - for once I agree with everything you said 🙂
There is much that could be said for honest products, not status symbols, sold at a fair price . . .
These products are often difficult to identify with minimal advertising
Thanks - since you keep coming back your feedback means even more. 😀
Just because something is expensive, does not make it "better"
Cheers 😀😀😀
Great video and content is on point, got me to subscribe. In 2021 I added the SPB239 variant with aftermarket rubber strap to my watch collection. It’s been my daily driver since, it's traveled all over the world with me. I hike, swim, snorkel, climb etc with it. This watch always gives me the feeling that it's capable of what I will throw at it and therefore my go to tool watch. I expect it to be the most worn watch from my collection long into the future.
Welcome aboard - Truly appreciated 😊😊
Thanks
Thanks a ton, really appreciated 😀😀😀
The comparison with the cars blew me away. The best watch video that I saw on YT.
143 all the way. Great review, thank you.
Thanks for watching! 😃
I’m going to try to make a fair comparison between the two by breaking it down between parts:
- Price: $1200 vs $6500.
-
- Adjustments: The SLA has tighter tolerances than the SPB.
-
- Bracelet: the SPB149 strap is very nice, but the SLA037 strap is even nicer, it feels a bit more rigid.
Thanks - Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Outstanding, a reference video for anyone who wants to know the differences between models.
I bought the 143. Absolutely a stunner and get complements often.
Agree completely. Good choice 😀
Really, you get compliments?
@@daveLin104yeah… from other watch guys lol

by far the best review of SPB143 available in internet
That's high praise. Thank you 😀😀
I really like the way Mr. "This Watch, That Watch" see things and I find myself listening to his videos while doing my IRL things. It's like listening to a person that you can learn a lot of things from. 👌
Thanks for watching (and for the feedback) 😀
A few years ago you could get a Grand Seiko for $4k, now Seiko wants that for a 62MAS... As you said it might be because it is better finished with higher QC but its a tough ask given the movement. I agree with you that the SPB143 is simultaneously worse on paper but better on wrist. Sticking with your car analogy - The new mini might be fancier and sleeker but the old one will most definitely get you from Joburg to Cape Town without being put on a tow truck. That being said the SJE093 is a very pretty watch but I remain unconvinced that its worth buying. Have a great weekend!
If the SPB143 didn't exist, I'd likely go for the SJE. But it does.
Go bokke! 😎😎
Perhaps, but I think I would rather have a marinemaster 300 then. Id hate to be an All Black today! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
You speak from the heart and it shows. Great video
Very good perspective 👍👍👍
Alwasy great comments... my SJE is +6spd... SPB 451 +12. My 143 (as you, I really loved them) were just all over the place (I tried 3) and they went from a near perfect example to +45.
Love the conclusion. You are the man! Great thought process. Keep it up!! 🧿
Appreciate it! Will try my best 😀😀
I loved the end. Made me feel so much more confident in my decision to purchase the SPB model. I want a tool, not a dresser queen 👏🏼👍🏼
Glad it was helpful! 😀
Cheers.
Well said! Cheers 😃
Agree! The SPB is a total strap monster as well - it’s likely the reason it gets so much wrist time.
Thanks for sharing 😀👍
Interesting analysis at the end of your upload. That was exactly the reason for me to choose the spb143. And then also for the gray dail. For a moment I thought it was just me. We drive a (new) Fiat 500 btw, Mea Culpa.
Good day. I fully agree with your 143 choice. In my opinion the same goes for the willard and turtles. Great video!
Thanks for sharing! 😀
Such an amazing content with great insights from experience.
Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀😀
Noted. Thanks 😊😊
I very much liked your video. It was knowledgable and well thought out. As it happens, I don‘t have the same preferences as you. I prefer an upscale diver with great design language and a very solid movement with virtually no positional variance that‘s not well known. For me this was the SLA043.
Thanks for the feedback.
And yes - choose what you like. That’s the key to this watch collecting thing 😀
You got the point making this parallelism with the automotive commerce dynamics, great!
Glad you liked it! 😃
I just bought a SPB143 and I love it! Great video btw, you’ve got yourself one more sub 😊
Right on! Thank you 😃😃
Nice analysis and well-argued point of view.
That's the thing about these watches - What resonates with us will be very personal and that's how it should be 😀😀
I’ve always believed watch enthusiasts to be romantics, whether we acknowledge it or not.
New to the channel here.
Gotta say, your voice is great for this kind of video.
thanks .😃
love your analogies to cars and guns
I just got my SPDC101 (SPB143) yesterday from Sakura watches. You are right on all accounts. I also have a BB58, that I just don't wear anymore. I like the Seiko much better than the Tudor. The SPB143, just has that everyday/every occasion feel. The guilded indices and the faux patina on the BB58 just doesn't lend itself to everyday wear.
Excellent Review. That's absolute true what you say. The feel in a watch should account for 90% of one's choice.
Thanks for your mamarvelous channel .
thanks - cheers 😊😊
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it vs the bb
😀
All of the 6L37s I've seen on TH-cam so far have been running within your bb54 spec. Maybe they are conservative with accuracy estimates.
I follow the spec sheet, not just what people claim or show on YT videos. @@pk1342
Well said, my thoughts exactly.
@@RabbitWatchShopif your spec shopping than you made the right decision
What a fantastic take. And I say that as someone who happily threw down for the SLA043 (which I still wear constantly), but I can't find any argument against your conclusion that the SPB is the more honest choice.
Thanks - Appreciated 😃
had to sub after watching this video, true connoisseur
Thanks. Welcome on board 😀
The BB54 to me is the start of 2023 so far 😀😀
Glad you felt it was helpful 😀
Thanks for the feedback - appreciated 😃😃
You have a relevant point about their higher end movements. They're higher end, but then... not really. It's a problem for them 😃
I would go with the posh model and pay more but I understand what you are expressing. very thoughtful video thank you.
Excellent vidéo. I’m with you on this one. I prefer my spb147 for its rugged, vintage feel. And for a more luxurious modern look I prefer the SLA065
Well said. 😀
If they would cost the same I would buy the SEJ because it is from a design perspective closer to the original. But I totally agree with you because of the price and the tool watch feeling the SPB is emotionally closer to the original 62MAS. Great Review!
Thank you - and agree on your perspective 😊
Hi what rubber strap do you have I have the 143 and thinking of the gl831 or tropic strap.
Great point! I love the SPB143 and I particularly prefer the version 1 model from 2020. 🙂
Get your point - The more expensive the get, the more I baby them as well 😀
I love King Seikos.
Cheers.
Thanks and cheers to you too 😃😃
A nice review, and I bought SPB453 at last.
Enjoy it 😀
Yes - you really hit it right on
Great stuff buddy!
I really like the 62mas., as well as these reinterpretations.
Though, I still think they’re a bit overpriced (and I’m not a big fan of that Prospex logo), so…
I’m getting all AliExpress unbranded aftermarket parts and Seiko mod my own homage watch. 😉
That's the way to go 😃😃
Great explanation, many here will agree that these are all wonderful references of the 62Mas, I owned the 017, 037, 043, 143, and now the SJE093 and hands down my favorite.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know what you think. It’s hugely appreciated 😀😀😀
Spot on. Agree with your choice.
Facts! 👍🏻
Seiko makes some "interesting" decisions regarding quality for sure. I've actually got a vid upcoming that adresses that topic. Hopefully it will drop in the next two weeks.
Cheers as always 😀😀😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch look forward to it!
Very very nice review👍🏻
Thanks. Glad you liked it 😀
It’s a great reissue, however it’s sold out if not mistaken. Nowhere to be found today in any shop (at least in Germany).
Yup. Totally sold out. Sold out pretty much five minutes after I finished filming, so good thing I decided not to order it 😂😂😂
Buena reflexión final , tengo el SPB143 y coincido contigo. Saludos
Thanks! 😃😃
I'm with you.
Definitely, the previous version for me.
Always buy what you like, not just what’s new is what I say 😀😀😀👍
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Hi Mike,
I was saving for one of the Seiko 62MAS descendants.
Then, I found and was besotted by a re-release of a Precista Royal Navy Diver from 1982 with a SW-200 movement for £495 and forgot the Seiko.
Ok, maybe not here nor there, but should I pull the trigger on a SPB143 NOW or delay my gratification, save more money and get a BB54?
Tough call... Generally I say don't buy the substitute for what you really want 😀
Wise words of advice, thanks!
I am really attracted to SLA037 and SJE039's bubble sapphire glass. I think the bubble sapphire glass just makes the watch "pop". If it has display caseback, the watch will be perfect. It doesn't but it is not a deal breaker.
Can you compare all of the recent-ish 62MAS watches vs the latest SPB455 et al? I appreciate your analytical approach to watch evaluation
Thanks - happy you liked it 😀😀
Lots of people bitching about qc but has anyone actually had qc issues with and SJE line watch?? I doubt it... There are many videos of this sitting next to a bb54 and the finishing details make the bb54 look cheap
exactly.
Whatever it takes for me to convince myself that I did the right thing 😂
This is a really good channel.
Thank you kindly 🙂🙂
In truth, I'm half way through getting the components to build a mod. SKX013 size, but using a GMT NH34 cause they seem super accurate. Will hopefully have an original dial though.
Impressive. Never had the nerve to try my hand at a mod. Good luck 😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 🥳
Cheers 😀
Curious what you think about the new SPB offerings.
the 453? and those? Love them. .Clear improvement over the 143. Wouldn't get one as I already have the 143 but if I didn't I would 😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch yes that is what I meant, thanks. And I'm in the same
boat as I have the 143 as well. Cheers.
SLA043 is my favorite one!
Excellent video!
Thx !!!! .😃😃
Where can I buy the yellow strap of the spb143 in the video?
It’s a tropic style strap.
Don’t remember where I got it specifically but watchobsession sells something very similar as does zuludiver
Sure they can be found elsewhere as well.
I have been largely underwhelmed by the 6R movement.
