    Great addition, I put a Harleydavidson fan assisted oil cooler on my 2018 RGS after it got installed with a hotted up SE stage 4 , I like it and it does help I've put 32000ks on bike since install.allso I put a fender skirt on my front gaurd and mounted it 1/2" lower to protect my fan assisted oil cooler , I get no mud,dirt, stones on cooler ,still looks brand new , I do across the board , riding.

    I live in Arizona and none of us run oil coolers. I bought the Harley oil cooler with thermostat, always leaked around the adapter. I took it off and have never used it since.
    We ride all year even above 110 deg. HD does testing on new bikes out here in the middle of the summer. If they needed them they would come from the factory with them.
    Just ride and don’t worry about it. There are a lot of high mileage Harley’s out here in AZ without coolers and no problems.

      While your at it take the transmission cooler off your cars transmission. How do you know how hot the oil temp gets on your harley. An oil temp gauge is also a good idea.

    • @beri232

      What bike do you have and what oil temps do you see? I live in Canada and ride a 2014 Fatboy Lo. Oil temps on the dipstick show 250 - 270 degrees at temp. I’ve got an S&S 124 with 585 cams… Seems hot cuz the old 103 usually ran around 220 degrees.

    Here in SE Louisiana its 90 F at 7 am part of the year. Get caught in traffic and you quickly know your 20k motorcycle is going to start overheating . On my 2013 Ultra I had the "Reefer" by UltraCool, it kicked on a lot in the city and traffic, and after I would pull off a long hard interstate run on to an off ramp on the interstate. The 20217 FLHXS had the HD fan assist on the factory oil cooler that did the trick. once i added the S&S cam and High flow oil pump it helped keep it a lot cooler. Now I'm on a 2021 Triglide and looking at DK cooler/filter relocation or UltraCool cooler , but you have to cut part of your lower out to mount it . I know it solves the heat problem no matter what performance mods I do later. My thought is cool engine ='s longevity and better performance.

    My 2017 Freewheeler did not come with fan. Heating at rear of back cylinder head can be diminished by removing that cat that adds major back pressure in a short distance to back cylinder. Also using the EITMS ? to kick out fuel heating in back cylinder in summer traffic is a must imo.

    Hello Doc, thanks for your videos!!
    I own a road king 103 from 2011- original-except air intake I believe. EIMTS is often on. I would like to make sure that the engine is cooled enough and improve the comfort. With the catalysator there is also lot of heat from the exhaust: what is the best for my me: cool flow fan, or adding the Harley fan cooled radiator. I believe that each of them can be mounted, possibly not with all the functionalities.

      According to my catalog neither will fit your bike. A HD oil cooler will help the motor. I prefer the Jagg 10 row with fan or the ultra cool with fans. To help you feel cooler....stick your knees out in the wind :) Thanks ~ Doc

    Liked Sunday late afternoon 18 April 2021! Okay, when I have my pre-owned 2001 Sportster 883 tow-trucked in to the “vintage Harley-Davidson repair shop” for its imminent internal cylinder head rebuild, I will have them install an oil cooler. A short story about the Harley-Davidson Customer Care Department: they do not care about their own customer’s motorcycles once they see it as vintage. 😀

  • @rudeawakening3833
    @rudeawakening3833 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Doc : thanks for having such clear , concise , and informative videos for us !
    I’ve owned quite a few H-D’s since the 70’s , and remember back in the day , the bikers added oil coolers like the Jagg , which as you know mounted to either side of the frame’s down tube . This allowed “ clean “ air to run past it and STILL allowed said clean air to hit the V- twins forward cylinder .
    I traded my 83’ beloved FXWG Wide Glide in for a brand new FXLR Low Rider , and was SO DISAPPOINTED that Willie G and da boys installed the oil cooler smack dab in front of the engine’s front jug ! Now in the Texas heat , the air is preheating the air to the forward cylinder , and sending a blast furnace of scalding air to the rear cylinder …
    YOUR opinion please , sir ?

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My opinion is strong. Every one is under the misunderstanding that this large "oil cooler" in front of the front cylinder is for the motor. It is not! It is only to cool the front and rear exhaust valves. With the size of the M8 motor the Motor it self need a 10 row with fan oil cooler besides the center oil cooler. Like the old days. Yes I would rather have two oil coolers on each side of the frame tubes and let the front cylinder receive fresh air. I am stepping down from my box now....Doc

    I'm going to have to slightly disagree with the reason for HD putting the fan cooler on the Trike models; rather than because they are moving slower, more stop and go or that they are in traffic more often, I believe its because of the higher 114 displacement, more engine load due to extra weight and rear running gear, and that they typically have or get Lower fairings which tend to block some free flowing air.. I live in the ozarks area, have a 107 Street Glide, and added Lower Fairings and I'm considering adding a fan to the OEM cooler and maybe I will be able to keep the Rear cylinder auto Shut-off feature disable..

    I’m ( still ) highly disappointed that HD didn’t follow Jagg’s engineering by having the location of said oil cooler to either side of the down tubes of the front of the frame to allow
    “ clean air “ for the oil cooler AND clean air to hit the front of the front cylinder ! ( instead of placing the new HD cooler directly in front of the engine )
    This was a poor choice on the Motor Company’s part ; it would have been NO MORE expensive to have chosen this better location. , IMHO .

    I was just curious if the stock oil pump can handle the extra oil lines, cooler, and all of the curves and ups and downs. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Anyways just curious and since you didn't mention it maybe it's not an issue.

      HD does not offer a fan assisted oil cooler for the Slim. I went with Jagg 10 row with fan..I love it! Doc

      Harley-Davidson offers their tried and true premium oil cooler without fan. There are several aftermarket manufacturers who are offering an oil cooler with fan (s)..Jaggs and Ultra Cool are at the top of the list. Do your research, follow the reviews by people who have installed and rode with them in the heat. Thanks ~ Doc

    Hey Doc, Would I need an oil cooler on my 2017 Street Bob? It’s got stage 2, aftermarket Reinhart exhaust , and the engine cam. Or is it good for the engine over a the lifetime of the engine or bike, high mileage, etc? Not planning on doing stage 3 or 4 but maybe in the future.

    How about using steel braided lines n not worrying about stones flying . I had one on a 85 fxr. Can I get one for an 09 heritage softail? Would you know approximate cost of parts?

    • @ralphklink6288

      Steel braid covered oil hoses may well help guard against foreign object damage, however the heat exchanger body itself remains at risk of puncture damage from foreign objects unless protected by a wire mesh screen. Thanks, Ralph K in St Louis, MO

    I ordered the fan for the oil cooler but once on the lift, they found out the chrome cover I had on it was not compatible and it was either a choice of having the fan and loosing the chrome cover or not installing the fan altogether. After paying $$$ for the chrome cover, I choose not to install the fan. I just have to make sure not to get stuck in stop & go traffic. Oh, the police version have them on from the factory. *** We, the techs and I, re-read the catalog description and it did say it wasn't compatible. DOH!!! Cool thing is they didn't charge me anything for the mishap and kept the fan and restocked it.

    Hi Doc, what are your thoughts on OILBUD hidden oil coolers, any experience with them? Looking for an oil cooler that will be the most efficient for my 2008 FLHX with a 103ci installed. My bike always ran hot since new, even without the upgrade to the 103ci. Your help and knowledge is deeply appreciated, THANKS and stay safe!

      Brian I truly appreciate the question. I did not know about oilbud coolers. I am looking into them. Before your question I have been looking into Jegs and ultra-cool. I am a true believer in a fan with a cooler for those stop and go traffic moments. There are key points. 6 row vs 10 row. How much CFM the fan capability. Thermostat fittings and fitment. Do your research as I am. An oil cooler is definitely a great addition to any Harley-Davidson. Thanks ~ Doc

    Doc, …… i have question: Years ago I had a Sportster (1994) and there used to be an aftermarket round oil cooler that after you removed the oil filter you could screw on the finned oil cooler on and then the new oil filter behind it. It also gave your Sportster slightly more oil capacity along with extra cooling during very hot climates. During the winter time there was a leather sleeve that slid over the cooler to block the now much colder air flow on the fins but still allowed for a tad larger oil capacity w/o having to remove the cooler. I wanna say HD used to sell this product but have not seen one in 26 years. Any ideas on who made these animals and where/how I can get one now for my bike ?
