Also with Lin I dont mind him not being an incredibly strong singer, because it literally didnt affect the overall quality of the musical and there's something about his voice that really brings out Hamilton's scrappiness. Like it really nicely juxtaposes with the schyler sisters who have those perfect, refined voices
For me, I would’ve liked the movie more if the actors had more screen time with Emma. If they’re not going to show the chemistry with Emma and Allysa, the might as well develop their chemistry with her. Only Barry had a chemistry with Emma, but they only dedicated very little screen time on that.
Unpopular opinion- I love six with all my heart but it’s more of a concert than a musical. There is little to no strict plot and is more just singing about different little connected stories if you get me? I still love it though!
Hadestown deserves the hype Hamilton has (except for the ticket prices lol) Broadway tickets shouldn’t cost more than $150, with the possible exceptions of the front rows. Let more people come see them. Bootlegs are the only way some people (international fans, disabled people who can’t physically get into the theatre, people who can’t afford it) can see shows, and shouldn’t be such a big deal. I get the money thing, but worry about making it more accessible to the masses first.
Glinda is flawed, especially in the beginning, but through the show, just because she doesn't become perfect, it doesn't make her wicked. She's just flawed. She's done wrong things yes, but she never hurt anyone to, say, Nessa's extent, or the wizard or ms. Morable's level. THEYRE the wicked ones,
I may be misinterpreting the show but I feel like the whole point of Wicked is to say that no one is really truly wicked, just flawed. And saying that Glinda is wicked is kind of missing the whole point of the show. But I could be wrong, I haven’t listened to Wicked in an ungodly amount of time
I love how Glinda truly feels like a real, grounded person by the end of the show. She really develops into a well-rounded person who has made both good and bad decisions in her life, and who knows how to make the hard choices and what their consequences are
I LOVE Ben Platt's Evan, but I think Andrew Barth Feldman may be a better fit for the film adaptation. His performance was incredible and He is the right age range for it. Again, I LOVE Platt, but I think he may a bit too old to play Evan. Still excited for it regardless.
I COMPLETELY agree. I LOVE Ben with all my heart (honestly SO much) but I’m sorry he’s too old for it (especially in a movie. I feel like you can get away with it on stage a bit more) but I would’ve really loved to see someone closer to the actual age (like Andrew) play Evan. It just feels like a little bit of an injustice to the story tbh, it’s meant to be about a teenage boys struggle with social anxiety and feeling suicidal etc. And having Evan be played by someone who’s almost 30 just doesn’t seem as personal somehow?
I totally agree! Andrew should be Evan in the movie, I'm not saying Ben is bad HE'S WONDERFUL but he isn't fit for the role anymore. We've already seen Ben in this situation, when he was in the politician's first season Payton didn't look like a high-schooler, we couldn't sympathize that much with him because he didn't look that age. Imagine in Evan Hansen, the storyline is a rollercoaster of emotions all centered in a high school kid. It'll be nearly impossible for the people who watch the movie to sympathize with the things he makes up, becasue he looks like an adult, even making Evan the bad guy. If Andrew is in the movie it is totally believable and it's easier to sympathize with his situation. Well, that's just my opinion!
They should not have cut "In the Bedroom Down the Hall" from Dear Evan Hansen. Natasha Pierre and the Comment of 1812 should be revived I love Hamilton, but I feel like it's a 10/10, while people are making it seem like a 100000/10 In the Heights needs more love.
Jeff Blim's high notes have become their own character and that's why people enjoy it. I love to make fun of him for not singing in his octave, but I love his chaotic high notes ngl
My unpopular opinion is that the way dear Evan Hansen is written is horribly toxic in the way it portrays mental health. Next To Normal will always be my pick
BroadwayBookworm325 personally i agree but also think it could be fixed making Evan accountable and showing that having mental health issues is not an excuse for shitty behavior. I was dumbfounded by the end, it felt like it missed a proper ending, because the one we've got was "eh you did some bad stuff but it actually worked out in the end, my parents and the world needed your lies, so it was actually a good thing".
I agree. I actually side with the parents in DEH. Even tho i love DEH. And yes i agree Next to normal potrays mental illness very well. As good as it get’s
As someone who can’t fucking stand DEH (I literally only liked For Forever, You Will Be Found, To Break In A Glove, Words Fail and So Big/So Small. Every other song was just the fucking same.), and as someone with social anxiety, I agree. They had a perfect chance for the ending, maybe Zoe could yell at Evan, unable to forgive him. But nope! ‘We needed your lies, so it’s fine!’ What THE HELL?! It makes me wonder how the fuck this show win the Tony’s... And I can agree, social anxiety is hard. But I’m sure 99% percent of us would NOT LIE AND USE SOMEONE’S DEATH FOR CLOUT!!! It just...doesn’t work like that! It’s not good either, especially for those with mental illnesses that are impressionable and thinks that how they should act. Won’t say anything else, other than as someone with autism and social anxiety, I find Dear Evan Hansen to be extremely offensive.
LMM's voice isn't strong enough to play Hamilton but we happily give him a free pass because he's a genius. I still laugh at the thought that he originally wanted to play Burr. BUT his voice is perfect in ITH. ✨
Oooh other hot take: the Fiyero casting type needs to change. In the original source material Fiyero is a person of colour, so it only feels respectful to have the casting type align with that. Its an easy and appropriate way to make more roles for poc actors on broadway and a show like wicked would give amazing exposure for these actors!
also, as an Asian American gal I think we need more representation of cocky guys of color, like Fiyero 😂 they DEFINITELY exist and musicals should reflect that
One of my opinions is that theatre awards don’t correlate to how good a show is and shouldn’t be put on such a high pedestal. It’s either a popularity contest, or are just determined by the thoughts of one type of audience, mostly old white men, who will not enjoy shows like Beetlejuice because it is not targeted towards them, hence meaning it got shut down even though it meant a lot to a lot of young people. Either they need to be revamped, or admit they are just opinions and not truths. The 2020 Tony Awards should prove this point, considering they are almost a joke. In short, theatre awards mean nothing and while they’re fun to watch, are completely bias and are just the thoughts of one demographic, yet are put on a pedastal and determine how well a show does because wider audiences don’t understand this. Hope this made sense.
Unpopular opinions no one asked for owo - Robert Manion is (no joke) one of the best performers in overall theatre. I'd love to see him someday reaching broadway. - Also about Starkid. It really annoys me when some people take it as a joke. I'm not meaning about the show itself, since is basically comedy :v. But more on the company and the work this lovely people make, which is usually pretty underrated. - The Lighting Thief one of the best musicals. Great music, great performances, and a great intention. Is a love letter, to theatre, to the kids and to all the Percy Jackson fans out there. And seeing how this show has been discriminated by the tony's is really upsetting. - SPONGEBOB THE MUSICAL SLAPS - Movie musicals do exists, and are usually the reason why musicals are popular worldwide. Such things like the movies adaptations like Mamma Mia, to originals like Nightmare Before Christmas. Also Musical series like glee or Crazy Ex Girlfriend. - Idk how but Chicago has become an underrated classic. Edit: I- more than 200 likes? Oh dude, thanks :'3
Yesssss!!! Spongebob the musical is one of my favorites! Mostly because it’s was the first Broadway show I saw, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Honestly, i think Lin knows he's not the strongest musical singer, and if Hamilton was written by someone else, he probably wouldn't be cast as Alexander, but he is a prime example of WANNA GET A JOB? MAKE IT YOURSELF! and as a fellow actor and musical singer, i think this is one of the most respectable things. When he writes a spectacle like Hamilton, he deserves to also be the one to play one of the male leads as the OG cast.
1. hamilton is amazing, but i got bored of it really quick 2. i don't like dear evan hansen that much. i feel like it's glorifyig connor's suicide by everyone starting to like him only AFTER he died, which i don't think is a good message to be sending to young fans 3. you are still allowed to call yourself a fan of musicals even if you've only seen hamilton, deh, and heathers 4. (i don't think this one is unpopular, but i wanna say it anyway) the fact that they made beetlejuice pansexual in the musical meas so fucking much to me and it makes me super happy because he's such an awesome character and i like having a character i can relate to
Completely agree with this but the evan hansen one, people starting to like Connor after death was part of the plot because when someone does commit suicide or die everyone else acts like they were friends with them and loved them (they do something similar in Heather's). Zoe also says that when she went back to school everyone was being nice to her cause, "she's the dead kids sister". This kinda stuff does happen in real life but nobody talks about it or calls people out for it.
unpopluar opinion: in the heights > hamilton like don't get me wrong i love hamilton but in the heights tells such a beautiful story of a neighborhood coming together and trying to preserve culture! it doesn't get enough love. everyone regards hamilton as this "first of it's kind" hip hop musical but in the heights has the same vibe to it lol that's just lmm's style
get ready for my life story: the first broadway musical i got into was wicked because my mam took me to see it when it did a uk tour as i was studying defying gravity for my gcse music. i fell in love with it and i’d been to see PLENTY of shows before but not of that character or of the BEAUTY of that show. so then, i started listening to it non-stop *hahaha hamilton pun*. the year after i saw wicked, hamilton was on the royal variety show. i LOVED alexander hamilton so decided to listen to the cast album and i fell in love with it. i listened to it over and over and over for about 5 months and i wouldn’t listen to anything else. then, i started liking bring it on and carrie and mean girls and dear evan hansen and six etc etc. just last year or the year before, i started liking in the heights. now, as much as i love hamilton, i’d rather put in the heights on as i think i overplayed hamilton and there’s not much more i can get out of it. you’re welcome for that unnecessarily long comment :)
This is definitely not unpopular in the BMC community. Everyone (including me) prefer Two Rivers to Broadway. The only good things from Broadway for me were Will R (as a actor and a person. I love him so much.), Tiffany Mann, and LGW. (Also George but he was in the original so I didn't count him)
It's also autobiographical and I think what reads as general misogyny as more to do with how Brown viewed a former partner. I think that's why Cathy frequently comes off as shrill.
interesting ! One may also argue that the show highlights societal norms concerning gender roles and how they may hurt people and relationships :) I've never thought about it that way
@@lindsaym.h.3583 yeah I think that’s why it comes of that way bc it’s so authentic and truthful and the ugly truth is misogyny is real and was ever more so in 2002 when the musical came out
Some opinions: -West Side Story should stay with the new lyrics in spanish. -Song & Dance is ALW's best show (but only the Bernadette Peters version), the second best is Sunset Boulevard. -SIX will get a new script by the end of the decade, it needs to evolve. -The female cast members carry the show 90% of the time. -Not every man in the show should be a tenor. -The Mamma Mia movies handle the ensemble the way they should, having them appear throughout the story. -Follies and Company are Sondheim's best shows. -Women on the Verge is Yazbek's best show.
Six's script actually got some edits that I felt weakened it Like having Parr being forced to speak up instead of shutting down the fighting herself, and Jane's part becoming... it seems kind of ad-libbed? Like I saw 2 versions of the script after "What a stressful situation that never happened" was removed, and the lines were pretty different and in one of them they actually repeated a joke in an awkward way in its place. And then there's taking a lot of fun out of the IDNYL reveal and making it a lot more "We are saying what is happening. This is humor."
The six script is actually pretty different now than the bootleg that’s around (the one with the OG 6) when it properly came to the west it got updated. I’d imagine the Broadway version will be updated too. I just imagine they’ll do yearly or biannual updates like with Mean Girls getting a new update
Agreed on West Side Story. It just makes sense. And Lin’s lyrics are great. People who don’t like WSS in Spanish are xenophobic and probably not Latine 🤷♀️
@@kristinc628 If I told you I thought Robert Manion was talentless trash, (he is actually the most talented person ever, but that’s just an example) You would probably be shocked tho, so you never know
Lin-Manuel Miranda is not a strong singer, granted, but he's not *bad*... And he's NOT a bad actor (proof: Mary Poppins Returns and His Dark Materials)
Come From Away is my absolute favorite show. I don't know if it's just me being Canadian and having that extra pride aspect, but... I've gone and seen it 4 times, over the span of 2 years, (all in Toronto, never on Broadway), and it makes me cry every single time I see it, and a lot of the times I listen to it. It's just one of those shows where you leave at the end, genuinely feeling better about the world. I can maybe understand how people who don't know it well wouldn't like it (I was skeptical of it the first time I saw it, based only on a vague description), but I dont know how you can still have that opinion after sitting down and watching it
I did wonder if the person who's opinion got read out had actually seen the show in person. Saw the show in Toronto 3 times and loved it EVERY time. Sure there are parts I like more than others, but it's still on of the best shows I've seen, and above all else, a beautiful story of human kindness
Unpopular opinion of my own which may nor may not actually be popular. Jamie Muscato is the best JD by showing his trauma and weak side the best, and therefore that makes his psychopathic actions more realistic and therefore more scary. Also the fact that he gets funnier, more confident, more outspoken, and more happy directly after killing is THE BEST in terms of characterization because it really nails just how JD is messed up mentally. Not just why he's screwed up on a logical level, but in a physical, mental, and emotional level. Jamie knows his character's motivation in terms of JD's trauma, and it makes the performance just *chef's kiss*!
Don’t know if this counts but I want the DEH movie to book based rather than musical based. I feel like the book gives a lot more depth into the characters which helps you to create more of a sense of why Evan did what he did and also gives a lot more depth to Connor which I feel is very important
Same. The movie deffo needs to look at the book also. When I read it I just loved the fact we saw more of Connor and saw that he wasn’t truly alone in the world
I was a bartender at Broadway shows for 4 years. It did hurt my heart asking for $33 for a cocktail. I would never upsell the vodka. At least the well drinks are only $21. And I also poured a "gay bar" pour. For those of you that don't know, drinks at gay bars are much stronger than at straight bars here in America. So you basically got a triple if you came to me. Also at Mean Girls you do get $4 off on your next drink if you bring your cup back.
Unpopular Opinion: I hate the changes made to Janis in Mean Girls the Musical. She is just as mean and manipulative as Regina, using Cady for her own revenge and completely abandoning her when she inevitably can't handle it. In the movie, she admits that she's mean, but in the musical, she's treated as this cool alt girl and her actions are praised in 'Rather Be Me'. Also in general I find the Mean Girls musical to be really unnecessary.
I feel Janis has always been like that, even in the movie, But I agree, Id Rather Be Me is supposed to be Janis coming clean, But it ends up being the whole school just worshiping Janis for some reason? WHAT???
My opinions: Hamilton isn't overhyped. But I do agree In The Heights deserves more attention. But they are both great musicals who shouldn't be compared - Be more chill broadway wasn't that bad in my opinion, and Will Roland is a great Jeremy and doesn't deserve hate -I hate Maureen and Mimi from Rent -Anastatia is insanely underrated -As much as I loved Heather Macnamara from Heathers, she's not an 'innocent cinnamon roll' -Great Comet, Amelie, and Jagged little pill are underrated - I hate Chloe from Be more chill and I feel bad for Brooke -Spongebob the musical Slaps -Washington on your side is harder to rap then guns and ships -It's kind of unfair to hate replacements because they aren't like the originals ( Like Will Roland and Presley Ryan) -I prefer the stage version of into the woods -Twisted is the best Starkid musical
I haven't seen many people hate on Presley. The Beetlejuice fans I've seen love her commitment to the character and show, which is something they never felt for Sophie. And Great Comet is not underrated IMO. It's impossible for it to be underrated when you people never shut up about its unfair treatment.
I agree with bmc, i don’t see why people hate on the Broadway version. i don’t have much knowledge of the show, but when i heard people were hating on the Broadway version I was a bit confused. I had listened to both versions and honestly preferred the Broadway one better.. but that’s just me :)
@@rae0993 If you go on pretty much any video comparing them, e.g. "Who sang Dead Mom better?" there's so many comments saying "sophia is sooo much better than Presley" or "I kind of hate Presley's Lydia"
What I Iike about the Les Mis film is that it made the whole Baracade section (in my opinion the most boring section) a lot more dynamanic and interesting
@@luthientinuviel3883 Exactly. Like no shade at all to stage show but Im just glad the film took the oppertunites that the stage version never had and made to make more exiting.
@@jessccruz I’m glad someone agrees with me! I haven’t seen the show myself but I’ve never really liked the soundtrack when I’ve tried to listen to it and I don’t understand the storyline 😂
@@sophiec7498 I would highly recommend watching the movie that the show is based on. I love the movie and saw it before watching the show. I think once you know the storyline and understand what’s happening, it makes a lot more sense. Although, even if you still don’t like the music, I would still recommend the movie because it’s really good.
My unpopular opinion Falsettos is underrated and I love it and I wish it was talked about more. It certainly has a cult following, but Bill Finn is my favourite composer and I think it's just beautiful
As someone who got into Hadestown via the broadway version, I like the broadway arrangemnts better in a lot of ways, but I ultimately prefer the off-broadway version because the performances are better and because the live vibe works really well for Hadestown.
It was the person who played Aaron originally (not Kyle Selig but some other guy... I forgot his name). He is/was very anti-LGTBQ+ and it made much of the cast very upset; especially Grey. Edit: His name is Cameron Dallas and he actually did not originate the role of Arron (Kyle did) but he was casted as a stunt and everyone hated him so he was only there for like a week.
Lara Leigh Turner, the new Karen "When she isn’t performing, Laura Leigh hosts a podcast called Living in the Light with Laura Leigh- where she interviews artists and creatives and they tell their stories about how Jesus brought them from the Dark and into the Light." Just a look at her website...
Unpopular Opinion: I like the placements of "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own" in the Les Miserables movie more than the stage show. I absolutely love the stage show more, but I think the placements of the those songs work better for the characters.
True that. Especially I dreamed a dream. On stage it's just "too pure and pretty" and that's not what the song should be. Fantine is crushed and devastated. She has reached the bottom, and that pain should be reflected in the way the song is performed. Anne Hathaway does a great job on that.
Yeah completely agree! Although the stage show is definitely much better in a lot of ways. What do you think about the placement of Stars in the movie? I don’t really know as I feel it makes Javert seem more weirdly obsessed with Valjean for the whole period of time before the revolution as opposed to just happening to see him again later and pledging to hunt him down, but I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad change.
I mean, god, what even IS a cabbage patch kid? It's like you're cutting into a head of lettuce and oH sHiT a BaBy I wAnTeD a SaLaD, but now I have a cHiLd
as a former grammar nerd, "none of my closest friends even has hands" is technically the proper way to say it. It's the only Mean Girls lyric I will ever defend.
Wicked is my favourite musical, it was the show that made me fall in love with theatre. It’s just everything you need in a musical: absolutely incredible music, amazing costumes, relatable characters but still something away from reality and it’s just one so good!!!! How someone doesn’t get chills at the end of Defying Gravity astounds me!! 💚💚💚
Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but I absolutely hate “Blue” from the OBC of Heathers. It just made me so uncomfortable and it was definitely not the type of song I would like. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the changes to the soundtrack, but I love the replacement song “You’re welcome” from the West End version.
I think the Les Mis film was only semi saved by the younger cast members-- Hugh Jackman and cast that played the older characters were really held back and fell so horrendously flat, which means the whole first half is the longest two weeks of my life (at least it seems so).
Not sure if anyone has already mentioned it but the supposed "anti-lgbt" actress is Laura Leigh Turner, the current Karen (although she only had her first performance before the Broadway shutdown). People are saying that she is anti-lgbt as she is a conservative/republican however a lot of the Mean Girls cast have defended her.
@@yee-raplantar-maximoff4318 He might be but more of a deal was made out of Laura Leigh's casting, you just have to search her name on Twitter to see the hate she got from Mean Girls fans for her casting.
@@yee-raplantar-maximoff4318 Im still trying to understand what that's about. So far all I got is that he threw water at this guy? But I still dont know what that has to do with anything
I think part of the situation with The Last Five Years is that it's so heavily influenced by Jason Robert Brown's own divorce (to the point where he was taken to court and had to change things) that some very messy, uncomfortable feelings about his ex-wife come up and he probably isn't objective in the writing process. That's not an excuse or a denial, but I think it's why we see it so heavily in that show and not necessarily in Brown's other work, imo.
@@Abigailbooks okay you've made an excellent point when you say you like them equally. Number 1: Why for so many people does there have to be a best one (i mean fair enough if you actually like one more than another then thats cool) but feel like people feel like they need to choose one person above all the others and its a competition. Number two: why sometimes when people pick a favorite, does it have to results in then putting the other person/people down? Just to note, I'm not talking about everyone here. These are just things that I've noticed here and there within the realm of the musicals fandom :)
you're not wrong.......my official stance is jeremy jordan's a better performer but i'd rather be friends with aaron tveit. as if that would ever happen
Your opinion on the 10th anniversary Les Mis dream cast is accurate. Fuckin Ruthie Henshalls I dreamed a dream is impeccably performed and sung it gives me chills. Lea Salongas Eponine is pure perfection. Philip Quast as Javert is why I love that character so much he shows his complexity and vulnerability all while sounding great vocally. And Michael Ball as Marius?! So GOOD🖤 I could go on🤷🏻♀️
Movie musicals are an iffy thing, but like I feel like the quality of movie musicals (we dont talk about cats) is improving so much, especially since there was a period after the classics where they just havent been good or have been painfully cringy. Like across the board I feel like they're improving a lot and that the cinematography for these movies are so gripping and do the choreography justice
Unpopular Opinion: Cats is a good, fun, musical. The movie destroyed the characters and story, and will turn people off of the really good stage version of the show. AKA the best Cats movie is the 1998 stage version.
I played Judas, in JCS. Judas and Jesus both switch between antagonist and protagonist throughout the story (though it is more often framed with Judas as the antagonist). But Rome (The council in "This Jesus Must Die") is unquestionably the villain!
So for Mean Girls/It Roars: "none of my closest friends even HAS hands" is grammatically correct. "None" is singular and so the verb "has" agrees with it, ignoring the phrase "of my closest friends." Many people think the verb would agree with "friends" ("friends have hands") but it actually is "none has" ... That being said, I realize it sounds weird because people don't casually talk like that! Might have been more fitting for Cady to use improper grammar since she's a teenager and more of a math person (than English, I assume). Whew! See, my English degree has a purpose sometimes 😂
Eddie's version of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables will never make me emotional I think it's one of the most beautiful versions of it. Hate me if ya want 😂
Wicked was probably the first show that properly got me into musical theatre The thing I absolutely love about Lin is that he made me realise that you don't need a classically Broadway voice to be a performer
I think the placement of „I Dreamed a Dream“ is much more impactful in thr Les Mis movie than it is in the show, but overall I prefer the stage version. Although I haven‘t seen the newest one at the Sondheim yet, so...

imo hamilton is overplayed (hearing it so much you get sick of it, happens regardless of quality) not overrated (undeserving of the praise it gets). also i don't think glinda is wicked even at the beginning. she's shallow and a bit of a mean girl, sure, but wicked is a far jump. she's a flawed teenager (they're starting college at the beginning of the show) who is turned into a prominent public figure overnight but develops and becomes a more understanding person and a force *for good* by the finale

Washington On Your Side is harder to rap than Guns and Ships. The part where Jefferson says “If Washington isn’t gonna listen to disciplined dissidents...” is really hard in my opinion. I cannot rap it but I can rap Guns and Ships (after I listened to the soundtrack way too many times).
Unpopular Opinion: Hadestown isn't underrated! Let me explain ... in this new decade, we find a lot of content online, so when a show gets popular it's obviously going to be all over the internet, people will talk about it yada ... yada ... Hamilton was a freacking big production, the amount of search and money in the project is Ludacris. So, when a musical like Hadestown, that is freacking amazing, and well done, doesn't recive the same amount of hipe or reconization, people get mad, and says that Hamilton is overrated, or Hadestown is underrated (i'm bored, those words have been thrown around a lot ...), but acually not, they're totally different from each other, Hadestown feels like a traditional musical, as good as it is(it is SOOO GOOD! i got totaly hiped as a fan of Greek Mythology!!!), while Hamilton fits into the cathegorie of being inovative. The sucess comes from being something new in musical theater (just like Phantom or Wicked were at their times) Doesn't meam you have to like one more than the orher, just that you don't have to compare or put one down to reconize the other! But if you wanna compare them, i believe there's a lot of more productive ways to do that, than saying "overrated" or "underrated", let's elaborate more our opinions (Sorry for the big ass comment! And i love your chanel!!! 😂❤️)
@@QuikVidGuy sorry, i don't understand wich part you're talking 😶 If i mispronpuced something, i'm sorry, english isn't my first language! I used Phantom and Wicked as examples of musicals that like Hamilton got a lot of hype because of what they brings of new to musical theatre!
@@e.c9770 I think what they're trying to say is Hadestown is very innovative. In some countries the word wicked means very. Or they were trying to say Hadestown is as innovative as Wicked was when it debuted While I disagree that Hadestown is classical musical theatre, I do think fans overuse the words over/underrated. We need to recognise that just we don't like something doesn't mean that everyone is wrong for liking it. IMO any musical that wins the Tony for best musical isn't underrated, but people perceive it as such because it's not everyone's all time favourite. A lot of this comes from people's tendency to be very hyperbolic on the internet. It can lead to very stale opinions because all every one talks about is not liking the new popular musical or calling a very popular musical under hyped because it's not everyone's fave. I would love for conversations to move past this.
@@booksvsmovies THANK YOU!! I love Hadestown, but i doesn't like talking about the show because of of how superficial the discussion ends up being I kinda of agree you!!! And i could have expressed my opinion better! What meant with Hamilton being innovative/inventive is how, not only the extructure of the show seems to be meticulously though, but also i rarely see a Musical with the soundtrack that people that doesn't even like musicals could listen casually(as someone who have been a fan of musicals for less than 4 years, i can tell how much songs i used to skip when trying to make a playlist) Normally we see people that doesn't like or aren't used to musicals listening 2 or 3 songs, but not the entire musical. The hip-hop being not only refered but also present into the entire musical, was new, and this is why i understand how the Hamilton got so popular(this and the massive market campaign...) Phantom was famous for being BIG and expensive(also for making a more of a sexual/romantic version of Eric) Wicked for bringing a new look for a very famous story, and making a villain a misunderstood figure(this is common today, but at the time it was something new) Cats for being weird and for not having a storyline Being expensive or popular doesn't always equals good, that's why i'm happy with the sucess of musicals like Six, even if the storyline isn't nothing new(we have seen a lot of musicals using historical facts as a base), the format is(doesn't matter if everyone likes it or not, we can't denial how it opens new possibilities of how to make a musical) What i meamt with Hadestown being traditional/classic is how it is more of the musical formula, the extructure is the traditional for a musical, but the way they use a greek myth but place it in more recent days is of course something new. What made me a fan of Hadestown was the Greek Mythology and how they made the characters be exactly how i would've though them to the present days I have always loved Persephone, and this version is more of a modern look in what the whole kidnapping/manipulation and love/hate realationship would have resulted A lot of medias fails to represent how troubled Hades and Persephone's relationship would be, making her purely loving and vulnerable, but this sassy, and caring version seems more cottect Same with Eurydice, the show gave her the personality we can't see in the actal myth, she isn't purely passive in her situation. I love how strong the females characters that are very passive and vulnerable in the are in the show without being OOC comparing with the myth ❤️
Between everything that has been going on in the US and my courses and quarantine and the horrible lack of musicals and theatre, I've been having a rough time, but this video made my whole night a little better and more musical! I wanted to say thank you for a very welcomed break from all the stress! I love your content and your channel, and I hope you have a nice day!
I know I’m late I have some unpopular theater opinions as well: Be More Chill does the same thing as Dear Evan Hansen but in a way that’s significantly better and it has better representation of a number of things (more poc, more lgbtqiapn+ characters, better mental health awareness, and even nuerodivergent characters who are all represented in a way that’s lovable and none of the characters fixate on any of that which is something deh could take note on) Head Over Heels was one of the best musicals on broadway and was absolutely groundbreaking (in many ways but especially it’s casting, it has lesbians, poc, trans people, feminists, an obese body positive leading lady who gets romance, etc) but it’s short run time demonstrates how broadway isn’t as progressive as we’d (including myself) like to believe The Prom is good as a musical (it’s cute, the plots good and well paced, the score slaps) but really sucks in terms of queer representation, particularly with Emma and Alysa because for “musical leads” they have little development, agency, or stage time in their own story Oliver the musical deserves more appreciation and deserves a Broadway revival The My Fair Lady revival deserved more attention because it was spectacular Phantom of the Opera isn’t high class, it’s just slow with a lack of wit Be More Chill is a fantastic musical that is criminally underrated (it’s my personal favorite and I could rant about how great it is for ages) The prices and lack of broadway proshots is a form of elitism Producers do have a legitimately important job and I’m glad they get paid well, but because of the split actors end up with not nearly enough money which has given the profession a bad name Shrek the musical is not at all a good musical but man the costume, make up, set design, and tech crew deserved to make a fortune The Lion King is honestly just a schmaltzy mess that doesn’t work as a musical and is far better as a nostalgic Disney cartoon The Music Man isn’t a good musical and Hugh Jackman isn’t a good actor; the fact that it replaced Beetlejuice on Broadway is outrageous The Producers is a hysterical show and deserves more hype (also the character Robert Debris is a lot like Barry from The Prom but significantly funnier, more likable, and even more progressive) The new musicals are genuinely really good, not over rated, it’s just that a lot of musicals are critically underrated
About the point about seeing the same actors names , I have to agree . Especially during the pandemic , ANY kind of MT performance that can go ahead WILL sell out , theres such a high demand . Many of the names featured , talented though they are, are very fortunate to have additional income from being influencers , and don’t necessarily need the work . I’d love to see the drive thru and other events showcase fresh grads or new talent - they’d still sell out with just one big name rather than the entire line up
I'm so mad that James Corden is in the Prom Movie. I was really looking forward to it because Iove the musical (and Andrew Rannells), but then I heard he was in it and,,, uhhh,,, Idk man. I've got nothing against him as a person, I just haven't liked him in anything I've seen him in (cough cough Into The Woods and Cats) so the news has really put me off. Edit: having seen the film honestly I was pleasantly surprised, he's still not my favourite but he's better than I expected
I AGREE! It’s not that he was ever genuinely awful but he kind of plays himself in everything if that makes sense? Like in Into the Woods and Cats and the trailer from the Prom you can’t really see a difference in the characters, it’s just him being James among a cast playing their characters and it’s very uncomfy
I agree with some of the Wicked comments, as the years have gone on I just realize that while I do enjoy a few songs and the staging and themes are great, but overall, I just...meh. Its pretty much the new Rent, which I have grown to hate (expect Tango Maureen and Take Me or Leave Me because those songs are ).
Also with Lin I dont mind him not being an incredibly strong singer, because it literally didnt affect the overall quality of the musical and there's something about his voice that really brings out Hamilton's scrappiness. Like it really nicely juxtaposes with the schyler sisters who have those perfect, refined voices
Yeah at least in the Disney+ recording Lin does okay in the first act but does reallllllly well in the acting department during Its Quiet Uptown
yessss x
To me it’s more like a character actor/singer. It added to Hamilton’s personality ^_^
Also what Lin is is a rapper, which is the style Hamilton(character) primarily uses.
I thought he was putting on a voice the first time I heard him
“Get. Back. To. The. Lesbians.” Can’t help but think this will be all of us watching the prom film
literally!!!!
For me, I would’ve liked the movie more if the actors had more screen time with Emma. If they’re not going to show the chemistry with Emma and Allysa, the might as well develop their chemistry with her. Only Barry had a chemistry with Emma, but they only dedicated very little screen time on that.
We need more representation on Broadway for ALTOS and BASSES.
Seriously!
YES!! As a trans woman who is a bass there are no roles for me and it sucks
Yes PLEASE!
Barret is doing this for us
YES! 100%.
Unpopular opinion- I love six with all my heart but it’s more of a concert than a musical. There is little to no strict plot and is more just singing about different little connected stories if you get me? I still love it though!
Didn't they mention in in the "musical" itself?
Hadestown deserves the hype Hamilton has (except for the ticket prices lol)
Broadway tickets shouldn’t cost more than $150, with the possible exceptions of the front rows. Let more people come see them.
Bootlegs are the only way some people (international fans, disabled people who can’t physically get into the theatre, people who can’t afford it) can see shows, and shouldn’t be such a big deal. I get the money thing, but worry about making it more accessible to the masses first.
And then they don't release pro shots because it'll 'reduce' ticket sales, nobody can buy tickets because they're so goddamn expensive!
Glinda is flawed, especially in the beginning, but through the show, just because she doesn't become perfect, it doesn't make her wicked. She's just flawed. She's done wrong things yes, but she never hurt anyone to, say, Nessa's extent, or the wizard or ms. Morable's level. THEYRE the wicked ones,
with their fancy gowns
and their fancy airs
True
I may be misinterpreting the show but I feel like the whole point of Wicked is to say that no one is really truly wicked, just flawed. And saying that Glinda is wicked is kind of missing the whole point of the show. But I could be wrong, I haven’t listened to Wicked in an ungodly amount of time
I love how Glinda truly feels like a real, grounded person by the end of the show. She really develops into a well-rounded person who has made both good and bad decisions in her life, and who knows how to make the hard choices and what their consequences are
In 50 years, we'll have a show about how Morrible wasn't wicked but just bullied for her horrible makeup skills
I LOVE Ben Platt's Evan, but I think Andrew Barth Feldman may be a better fit for the film adaptation. His performance was incredible and He is the right age range for it. Again, I LOVE Platt, but I think he may a bit too old to play Evan. Still excited for it regardless.
@Dax Madison-Cedillo Did someone say Draco Malfoy????
Yes!I agree!
yes! i wish the got andrew to do it, not to mention he's an actual teen
Natasha Pierre and the Comment of 1812 should be revived
I love Hamilton, but I feel like it's a 10/10, while people are making it seem like a 100000/10
In the Heights needs more love.
It’s always bothered me that Cynthia never got to have a song and ITBDTH was so beautiful
These are all so true. I love ITBDTH with my whole heart.
Yes All of this is true
Totally agree about Great Comet!
ith > hamilton i have to say it
Jeff Blim's high notes have become their own character and that's why people enjoy it. I love to make fun of him for not singing in his octave, but I love his chaotic high notes ngl
i- i’d love to say i agree but i just can’t. that last one in nightmare time... murder me...
Agreed, it's such a manipulative presentation of social anxiety. I don't really feel bad for Evan.
I love DEH but I’m gonna agreee
“I could genuinely just sit here and cry about Broadway for an hour”
Ha. Same.
Its an easy and appropriate way to make more roles for poc actors on broadway and a show like wicked would give amazing exposure for these actors!
also, as an Asian American gal I think we need more representation of cocky guys of color, like Fiyero 😂 they DEFINITELY exist and musicals should reflect that
@@Grace-ez2ot 100%!
I saw Wicked in Korean and honestly it’s ✨elevated✨ (so is the Korean Elisabeth omgggg amazing)
OMG YESSS
yes!!!!!!!! we’ve had enough white boys
I would like this but it has 69 likes
Unpopular opinions no one asked for owo
- Robert Manion is (no joke) one of the best performers in overall theatre.
- SPONGEBOB THE MUSICAL SLAPS
- Movie musicals do exists, and are usually the reason why musicals are popular worldwide.
Agree with the first two, disagree with the next one (idk about Spongebob), agree with the last two
I haven't watched/listened to the lightning theif but I agree with the rest!
Yesssss!!! Spongebob the musical is one of my favorites! Mostly because it’s was the first Broadway show I saw, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Robert manion is gift to this world
I haven't listened to SpongeBob but you're 100% right with all of theseeee
Honestly, i think Lin knows he's not the strongest musical singer, and if Hamilton was written by someone else, he probably wouldn't be cast as Alexander, but he is a prime example of WANNA GET A JOB? MAKE IT YOURSELF! and as a fellow actor and musical singer, i think this is one of the most respectable things. When he writes a spectacle like Hamilton, he deserves to also be the one to play one of the male leads as the OG cast.

"Ughh get back to the lesbians!!" is such a mood
1. hamilton is amazing, but i got bored of it really quick
2. i don't like dear evan hansen that much. i feel like it's glorifyig connor's suicide by everyone starting to like him only AFTER he died, which i don't think is a good message to be sending to young fans
3. you are still allowed to call yourself a fan of musicals even if you've only seen hamilton, deh, and heathers
I agree. I seem to gravitate more towards in the heights because the story seems a lot more personal to LMM
I think in the heights will get more visibility after the movie and everybody will fall in love with the story, characters and songs
Saaaaaame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Hamilton but I love in the heights more
get ready for my life story:
the first broadway musical i got into was wicked because my mam took me to see it when it did a uk tour as i was studying defying gravity for my gcse music. i fell in love with it and i’d been to see PLENTY of shows before but not of that character or of the BEAUTY of that show. so then, i started listening to it non-stop *hahaha hamilton pun*. the year after i saw wicked, hamilton was on the royal variety show. i LOVED alexander hamilton so decided to listen to the cast album and i fell in love with it. i listened to it over and over and over for about 5 months and i wouldn’t listen to anything else. then, i started liking bring it on and carrie and mean girls and dear evan hansen and six etc etc. just last year or the year before, i started liking in the heights. now, as much as i love hamilton, i’d rather put in the heights on as i think i overplayed hamilton and there’s not much more i can get out of it.
you’re welcome for that unnecessarily long comment :)
YES! And also Claudia’s death is sadder than Phillip’s
My own opinion, I don’t know if its unpopular or not, is that the Be More Chill original cast recording is miles ahead of the broadway recording.
From what I know, the Broadway recording isn't liked.
This is definitely not unpopular in the BMC community. Everyone (including me) prefer Two Rivers to Broadway. The only good things from Broadway for me were Will R (as a actor and a person. I love him so much.), Tiffany Mann, and LGW. (Also George but he was in the original so I didn't count him)
i like will roland a lot more than will connoly, but i'm so mad about all the lyric changes (especially pitiful children oml)

I think that the misogyny in the plot of Last Five Years is purposeful and part of why the relationship of Cathy and Jamie was the way it was.
It's also autobiographical and I think what reads as general misogyny as more to do with how Brown viewed a former partner. I think that's why Cathy frequently comes off as shrill.
interesting ! One may also argue that the show highlights societal norms concerning gender roles and how they may hurt people and relationships :) I've never thought about it that way
@@lindsaym.h.3583 yeah I think that’s why it comes of that way bc it’s so authentic and truthful and the ugly truth is misogyny is real and was ever more so in 2002 when the musical came out
@@CP-gk4ri agreed. And I think it has a touch of trying to break down gender norms when Cathy sings “I can do better that” and “Climbing Uphill”
Some opinions:
-West Side Story should stay with the new lyrics in spanish.
Six's script actually got some edits that I felt weakened it
Like having Parr being forced to speak up instead of shutting down the fighting herself, and Jane's part becoming... it seems kind of ad-libbed?
NOT EVERY MALE ACTOR NEEDS TO BE A TENOR! Say it louder for the people in the back.
Sunset boulevard slaps
Agreed on West Side Story. It just makes sense. And Lin’s lyrics are great. People who don’t like WSS in Spanish are xenophobic and probably not Latine 🤷♀️

Lin-Manuel Miranda is not a strong singer, granted, but he's not *bad*... And he's NOT a bad actor (proof: Mary Poppins Returns and His Dark Materials)
Just because he's a good movie actor, does not mean he is good on stage.
I think he's fine, but many movie actors are not cut-out for the stage
Come From Away is my absolute favorite show. I don't know if it's just me being Canadian and having that extra pride aspect, but... I've gone and seen it 4 times, over the span of 2 years, (all in Toronto, never on Broadway), and it makes me cry every single time I see it, and a lot of the times I listen to it. It's just one of those shows where you leave at the end, genuinely feeling better about the world. I can maybe understand how people who don't know it well wouldn't like it (I was skeptical of it the first time I saw it, based only on a vague description), but I dont know how you can still have that opinion after sitting down and watching it
Agree! It's a fantastic show, really makes you feel good.
Loved seeing it both in Toronto and New York. Such different reactions from the audiences. The Canadian audience reacted so much more!
@@virginieroy9707 That’s really interesting to me. Do you mean in terms of laughter/emotion or praise/clapping???
Yes. Everything about it is just so great, catchy, and wholesome!
Jamie knows his character's motivation in terms of JD's trauma, and it makes the performance just *chef's kiss*!
yeah same haha
Best quote of the day : ✨fat people can fall in love too✨
Don’t know if this counts but I want the DEH movie to book based rather than musical based. I feel like the book gives a lot more depth into the characters which helps you to create more of a sense of why Evan did what he did and also gives a lot more depth to Connor which I feel is very important
Oh I absolutely agree. I adore the book and would love to see the movie be more based on that!!
Also at Mean Girls you do get $4 off on your next drink if you bring your cup back.
get me to the gay bars in nyc then!!!!
WHAT???
My opinions:
Hamilton isn't overhyped. But I do agree In The Heights deserves more attention. But they are both great musicals who shouldn't be compared
- Be more chill broadway wasn't that bad in my opinion, and Will Roland is a great Jeremy and doesn't deserve hate
-I hate Maureen and Mimi from Rent
-Anastatia is insanely underrated
-As much as I loved Heather Macnamara from Heathers, she's not an 'innocent cinnamon roll'
-Great Comet, Amelie, and Jagged little pill are underrated
- I hate Chloe from Be more chill and I feel bad for Brooke
-Spongebob the musical Slaps
-Washington on your side is harder to rap then guns and ships
-It's kind of unfair to hate replacements because they aren't like the originals ( Like Will Roland and Presley Ryan)
-I prefer the stage version of into the woods
-Twisted is the best Starkid musical
I agree with ALL of these, These are facts lol
I haven't seen many people hate on Presley. The Beetlejuice fans I've seen love her commitment to the character and show, which is something they never felt for Sophie. And Great Comet is not underrated IMO. It's impossible for it to be underrated when you people never shut up about its unfair treatment.
I agree with bmc, i don’t see why people hate on the Broadway version. i don’t have much knowledge of the show, but when i heard people were hating on the Broadway version I was a bit confused. I had listened to both versions and honestly preferred the Broadway one better.. but that’s just me :)

True that. Especially I dreamed a dream. On stage it's just "too pure and pretty" and that's not what the song should be. Fantine is crushed and devastated. She has reached the bottom, and that pain should be reflected in the way the song is performed. Anne Hathaway does a great job on that.
Okay, but...

So for Mean Girls/It Roars: "none of my closest friends even HAS hands" is grammatically correct. "None" is singular and so the verb "has" agrees with it, ignoring the phrase "of my closest friends."
Many people think the verb would agree with "friends" ("friends have hands") but it actually is "none has" ... That being said, I realize it sounds weird because people don't casually talk like that!
The sucess comes from being something new in musical theater (just like Phantom or Wicked were at their times)
Doesn't meam you have to like one more than the orher, just that you don't have to compare or put one down to reconize the other!
But if you wanna compare them, i believe there's a lot of more productive ways to do that, than saying "overrated" or "underrated", let's elaborate more our opinions
(Sorry for the big ass comment! And i love your chanel!!! 😂❤️)
hadestown is WICKED innovative, what?
@@QuikVidGuy sorry, i don't understand wich part you're talking 😶
If i mispronpuced something, i'm sorry, english isn't my first language!
I used Phantom and Wicked as examples of musicals that like Hamilton got a lot of hype because of what they brings of new to musical theatre!
@@e.c9770 I think what they're trying to say is Hadestown is very innovative. In some countries the word wicked means very. Or they were trying to say Hadestown is as innovative as Wicked was when it debuted
While I disagree that Hadestown is classical musical theatre, I do think fans overuse the words over/underrated.
I love Hadestown, but i doesn't like talking about the show because of of how superficial the discussion ends up being
I kinda of agree you!!! And i could have expressed my opinion better!
What meant with Hamilton being innovative/inventive is how, not only the extructure of the show seems to be meticulously though, but also i rarely see a Musical with the soundtrack that people that doesn't even like musicals could listen casually(as someone who have been a fan of musicals for less than 4 years, i can tell how much songs i used to skip when trying to make a playlist)
Normally we see people that doesn't like or aren't used to musicals listening 2 or 3 songs, but not the entire musical. The hip-hop being not only refered but also present into the entire musical, was new, and this is why i understand how the Hamilton got so popular(this and the massive market campaign...)
Phantom was famous for being BIG and expensive(also for making a more of a sexual/romantic version of Eric)
Wicked for bringing a new look for a very famous story, and making a villain a misunderstood figure(this is common today, but at the time it was something new)
Cats for being weird and for not having a storyline
Being expensive or popular doesn't always equals good, that's why i'm happy with the sucess of musicals like Six, even if the storyline isn't nothing new(we have seen a lot of musicals using historical facts as a base), the format is(doesn't matter if everyone likes it or not, we can't denial how it opens new possibilities of how to make a musical)
What i meamt with Hadestown being traditional/classic is how it is more of the musical formula, the extructure is the traditional for a musical, but the way they use a greek myth but place it in more recent days is of course something new.
What made me a fan of Hadestown was the Greek Mythology and how they made the characters be exactly how i would've though them to the present days
I have always loved Persephone, and this version is more of a modern look in what the whole kidnapping/manipulation and love/hate realationship would have resulted
A lot of medias fails to represent how troubled Hades and Persephone's relationship would be, making her purely loving and vulnerable, but this sassy, and caring version seems more cottect
Same with Eurydice, the show gave her the personality we can't see in the actal myth, she isn't purely passive in her situation.
I love how strong the females characters that are very passive and vulnerable in the are in the show without being OOC comparing with the myth ❤️
@@e.c9770 oh I think I understand your point about Hadestown now.

I wanted to say thank you for a very welcomed break from all the stress! I love your content and your channel, and I hope you have a nice day!
“He’s short and lovely” 🤣😍
I know I’m late I have some unpopular theater opinions as well:
Be More Chill does the same thing as Dear Evan Hansen but in a way that’s significantly better and it has better representation of a number of things (more poc, more lgbtqiapn+ characters, better mental health awareness, and even nuerodivergent characters who are all represented in a way that’s lovable and none of the characters fixate on any of that which is something deh could take note on)
Head Over Heels was one of the best musicals on broadway and was absolutely groundbreaking (in many ways but especially it’s casting, it has lesbians, poc, trans people, feminists, an obese body positive leading lady who gets romance, etc) but it’s short run time demonstrates how broadway isn’t as progressive as we’d (including myself) like to believe
The Prom is good as a musical (it’s cute, the plots good and well paced, the score slaps) but really sucks in terms of queer representation, particularly with Emma and Alysa because for “musical leads” they have little development, agency, or stage time in their own story
Oliver the musical deserves more appreciation and deserves a Broadway revival
The My Fair Lady revival deserved more attention because it was spectacular
Phantom of the Opera isn’t high class, it’s just slow with a lack of wit
Be More Chill is a fantastic musical that is criminally underrated (it’s my personal favorite and I could rant about how great it is for ages)
The prices and lack of broadway proshots is a form of elitism
Producers do have a legitimately important job and I’m glad they get paid well, but because of the split actors end up with not nearly enough money which has given the profession a bad name
Shrek the musical is not at all a good musical but man the costume, make up, set design, and tech crew deserved to make a fortune
The Lion King is honestly just a schmaltzy mess that doesn’t work as a musical and is far better as a nostalgic Disney cartoon
The Music Man isn’t a good musical and Hugh Jackman isn’t a good actor; the fact that it replaced Beetlejuice on Broadway is outrageous
The Producers is a hysterical show and deserves more hype (also the character Robert Debris is a lot like Barry from The Prom but significantly funnier, more likable, and even more progressive)
The new musicals are genuinely really good, not over rated, it’s just that a lot of musicals are critically underrated
