The fact that every episode ended with someone getting voted out and then having to sing an Avril Lavigne song through tears really set the tone for the show
The thing about the Glee Project that genuinely disappointed and irritated me is that Ryan Murphy and the rest of the writers were clearly trying to recreate the magic they experienced when they cast Chris Colfer. So you see these talented kids get eliminated because they didn't, essentially, "inspire" Murphy to create a character around them. But, quite frankly, I think it would have benefited Glee (which notoriously had major and inconsistent writing issues throughout the series) if Ry an Murphy had, at the very least, a working outline of a character that he was looking to cast specifically. Instead, they were just looking for a kid to do all of the work for them, not by creating a character that was already made to fit into Glee's story, but to just play a mildly altered version of themselves in half-baked and forced plotlines that get abandoned anyway.
... And then at the end of the day, all the winners' characters on Glee were kind of shit (i.e. majorly underdeveloped). What a waste of talent. He definitely should have written the characters before the casting process.
I think that's the approach they took in Season 2, which, as I recall, had 3 or 4 boy-next-door-who-plays-football types. Clearly, they were looking to cast another Finn/Sam type. But, yes, that annoyed me as well during Season 1 of GP. Especially since they were so excited by the idea of Damien as a leprechaun -- and then didn't do much with that concept.
He kinda did in season 2. He wanted a replacement for Finn she Blake was the closest they had. The show would have been much much more interesting if Ali had won.
please do season 2 so we can talk about the the robbery that was Nellie. like her "if I were a boy" is STILL so iconic. like it made the judges cry. legendary.
I feel like maybe Samuel had the worst arc, as Damien had the whole being deported and being a leprechaun thing. Samuel didn’t really get anything other than crushing on Quinn. Also, Damian got there solos, Sam didn’t get any
The biggest problem with the show was that they did everything kind of backwards. One of the major reasons Damian won was because he was constantly in the bottom and therefore got to spend the most time with Ryan Murphy and the judge's one on one. Because of this it painted a clearer picture of how Ryan could write for him. The top two performers should have gotten to perform for Ryan. Unfortunately that takes out the elimination bit, but the way the show did it gave the losers the advantage and the winner's the disadvantage. Update: Something I forgot was that Sam had also auditioned for Glee prior to the Glee project so he had already been on Ryan's radar giving him an advantage to win as well. (For the record, I was basically in love with Damian at the time, and was rooting for both him and Hannah. Neither of them were the strongest singers, but they had the most heart, and I'm sucker for that kind of stuff)
I really felt for Hannah. She was eliminated just before they decided to give everyone a prize. And I thought she was probably the best actor in the competition. Or, at least, she could have created a compelling character on the show, because she was just lovely.
Can we just talk about Damian and Cameron's epic bromance? Like on the show and then Cameron used his fan favorite prize (recording a song) TO RECORD THE SONG WITH DAMIAN? And they were doing TH-cam videos together and just I--
Can we talk about how Cameron's special thing was that he was a devout Christian and Ryan Murphy responded well to that, and the MINUTE he left Sam plays the "I'm a devout Christian, that's my thing". A THIEF! and that's why he won.
The glee project is how I got into Glee. I loved Season 1 so much. Marissa deserved so much better. And definitely once they were on Glee, Samuel and Damien deserved better.

I remember Lindsay sharing on Instagram a while back that they completely warped her in the Vulnerability episode, and that she'd shared her own experience with being assaulted/abused after Emily opened up, and THAT was why she felt fake and why she went for that as her word, but they painted the picture of her just being a diva :/

I completely agree with you--Alex and Lindsay were 100% my favorites/who I think were the strongest options. I was so excited at the premise of a younger, better Rachel to take down Ms. Berry a few pegs. THAT WAS LINDSAY! Plus, I have to wonder if the Marley/Ryder seasons wouldn't have happened if Lindsay won instead. We stan Melissa, but those two seasons were... something. I hadn't thought about how Alex/Unique was styled, but in hindsight that makes total sense. Gosh, I was just thinking a week ago that S1 of The Glee Project was 10,000x stronger than S2's cast.
Yes. If the top half or so of the cast had appeared in 1-2 episodes to see if they inspired the writers to wrote more for them. Uniwue!/Alex did. Harmony didn't and we never saw her again.

When I was little I had a HUGE crush on Damian because I would listen to him when he was part of Celtic Thunder. So ironically it was when he was in Glee that got me interested in the show 😄 And now apparently I'm in the top 5% of people who listen to Glee on Spotify 😂
Lindsay and Alex should have won season 1. Harmony could have been Rachels' rival in NYADA. Besides that, they could have used her character in season three to explore Rachel's insecurities. She could've sung a brodway song before Rachel's audition. That would explaint why Rachel failed it. Alex had so much to add to the show. That is why he got cast in season 4 and 5 as well. It's a pity Samuel and Damian's characters were so boring. Roy could've been well written and Joe had a random arc with Quinn before being completely forgotten. Anyway, we can't change it anymore. It's done. Btw I hope things get better in USA so Lindsay can continue to perform in Broadway. She was so excited to play Elphaba. That's a big role. I'm so glad she's finally being recognized by her talent.
So as someone who has seen Damian perform live multiple times over the years he was very under utilized on the glee project, and on glee. The closest you will ever get to knowing just how good he is on stage and how charismatic he is is with his final performance on the glee project. He's got a crooners voice like Frank Sinatra, or Michael Buble, and with the write songs it can sound really good. I know you said Damian isn't a theater performer, but he is, he's just not an actor. He is very much a performer. But your opinions are very valid.
I think that part of the problem is that they didn't know how to write for a bass baritone. They consistently made him sing baritenor, which probably didn't help his voice.

I really love damian performances on glee(except bein green), it was so refreshing to hear someone sing with a smooth voice and a low register in the middle of all the screamfest(not that i don’t enjoy that too, but is good to have something different sometimes)
Tbh i believe halfway through they started setting everything up for Cameron to win, even if he wasnt the best singer/actor of the group, but once he decided to exit competition they went for Sam because he could fill that "christian pretty boy" image that Ryan Murphy latched on. Then they decided to keep Damien because he was a fan favorite. Damian also already had a big fanbase in ireland due to him being part of the Celtic Thunder singing group. Out of all of the cast at that moment he was the only one who already was kind famous, at least in his own country. Tbh i believe the only reason he was casted to participate in TGJ was because of that, to catch the attention of overseas viewers and the fanbase he already had.
I loved Damian from Celtic Thunder, but the writers didn't really know what to do with his character on Glee. As for Bryce, I love seeing him soar now with hit songs on the radio. He's done far better than he might have if he went further on the Glee Project.
my biggest problem wit it was how the “winners” of s1 got duped in the actual show like there was supposed to be 1 winner that would get a whole season and in that sense a storyline but then they said it was 4 “winners” 2 allegedly got 7 episodes and 2 got allegedly 2 episodes so it was really confusing when they would barely be in season 3 and i always thought lindsey got done dirty cuz she was the only one that actually only had 2 episodes everyone else got more
You can absolutely find the sexuality episode online, I just rewatched both seasons a few weeks ago! That specific ep is just a lot harder to find, and I am entirely convinced it was washed from sites due to Mark being there and the comments he made. Saying to Alex who at the time was barely 18 "Are you old enough to be sexy" and asking to see his ID... If I was Oxygen I wouldn't want that video out there representing my network either. I just rewatched it, and I think he was freaked out because he didn’t expect it. Like Lindsay just a planted a kiss on him on camera without discussing it first. It wasn’t cool, and I can see why that would freak him out. And in fairness, during their last chance performance in that same episode, Lindsay gave Cameron a little peck next to his lips. So it seems like he was able to get himself to the point where he could kiss someone on camera. He just needed some warning

Second: Lindsay was asked by the producers to kiss Cameron like they did with Marissa but they didn't show it because they were clearly trying to create this storyline for Lindsay of being a fake bitch. Third: the kiss lindsay gave cameron on the stage after the duet was on the cheek.
When i watched this season 1, i can't stop thinking about marissa, how she got eliminated suddenly. i thought that she would've won the show for never been in the bottom three and won some assigment. how poor just like shana in season 2
Have you ever seen "Grease, You're the One That I Want!"? It was a reality show in 2007 to find the Broadway revival Danny and Sandy for Grease and it is fantastic! I was completely obsessed at the time. I think you would get such a kick out of it, and at least one of the contestants went on to be a very big Broadway star!

Because i never watched Glee when it originally broadcast so i never got to watch The Glee Project. now i dunno if that was a good or bad thing. seems it was even more chaotic than the actual show.
I remember being obsessed with Cameron... like I legit cried when he left so I never liked Sam for “stealing” his role hahaha I’m sad Cameron basically disappeared, he wasn’t the strongest singer but his voice was so different I enjoyed his style & I totally agree with you, he was everything baby me wanted 😂
In one if he early episodes Nikki said that TGP was a Bootcamp for Glee. They gave them feedback and expected them to come back and show them that they had incorporated that feedback. No one did that more than Damian which is why he was the (co) winner. I really felt the Cameron, but ultimate he was trying out for a job and he wasn’t willing to do what was necessary for the job. I give him a lot of credit for leaving and giving his place to Damian, but realistically he should not have been out in that position and should have been eliminated during one of the previous weeks. Marisa was super talented and was eliminated the slushy week. Both fo them struggled that week but they had to reset the cameras and wardrobe for him twice because he broke character.
I loved the Glee project! I would watch their performances over and over! Zac Woodlee may be my favourite human ever! Every time he would hug himself, when he was excited for a contestant! Made me giddy! I can never here I wish I “ had” Jessie’s girl after Damien, My dad would even sing it I wish I “was” Jessie’s girl! I will have to watch it again, as I didn’t like Lindsay, or Alex.... but I do acknowledge that they are extremely talented. Sigh Cameron 😍 I loved his voice, and he was so cute! I think some of my favourite memories of glee are from the glee project
me and my mom were obsessed with this show, too!! i remember them singing keep holding on every time someone got eliminated. i also remember thinking all the challenges/songs/whatever were really fun. definitely have fond memories of this
I remember watching it at the time and trying so hard to avoid Tumblr and Twitter spoilers, lol. Damien was definitely fave and I got obsessed with Celtic Thunder afterward. I still follow some of TGP members on Twitter. I'm glad they've all found their own success afterward. The editing was for sure unfair to them.

my cousins and I constantly talk about the glee project. for my bday last year one of them gave me a flashdrive with all of the episodes on it (including the sexuality episode from season 1) and it's truly one of my favorite gifts i've ever received lol
I've never watched the Glee Project but I think that Damian McGinty already had a higher chance to get in than any others because he was already in a band called 'Celtic Thunder' in 2007 when he was only 14 and he was in it for 4 years. I'm not saying he's not talented because he is but i just think that there could have been a small bit of bias as he already had a bit of a following.
He also didn't even audition to be on TGP, he was contacted by Robert Ulrich to come and be on the show, and then he 'auditioned,' so obviously they were already looking to cast him, or at least use his following for views. (I was obsessed w Celtic Thunder AND glee back then so this was all a dream come true for me 😂)

god i was obsessed with the glee project. cameron and damien were an actual brotp for me at the time like. i cried when cameron gave damien his place. and i was gunning so hard for damien but im pretty sure thats just the patriotism in me as an irish person
I think it's important to mention what Lindsay was actually talking about in the vulnerability week was her experience in an abusive/toxic relationship and the producers completely took that and edited it into Lindsay saying she felt 'fake' to fit their narrative. I find it so difficult to watch that back now, especially because in the same episode they shared Emily's story with being taken advantage of by music producers. It now feels disingenuous on the producers part. I feel so bad for Lindsay because I'm sure she had a lot of hate at the time. Also I can't believe they then went on to edit the kiss (Which allegedly she was told to do) as Lindsay just kissing Cameron out of the blue and trying to copy Marissa/Samuel. Thankfully she seems to have got past all the drama. I LOVE seeing her doing her thing, starring on broadway, getting engaged. I'm so happy for her.
I’m kind of disappointed how my Irish man was there for the first part and then just disappeared for ages... he’s honestly such an amazing actor in glee and I’m surprised he didn’t compliment the story at all... he just had his own storyline and then was thrown away, with Joe they did have him in the story for a bit but it’s the same with all of them unfortunately....
I kinda feel like this project was a huge waste of talent. The people who they cast not only were good singers but they could out sing half of the cast but they just dropped the characters without proper conclusions, rory and shipped back to Ireland but it was teased he lied about it kinda it was dumb. But it was really really dumb for the Christian dude whose name I cant even remember because his only character trait was being a Christian (I think it was jeff) he was just gone one day, I dont even think he got a solo? Whatever glee failed with this competition.
It was a good idea for a reality show, but they clearly didnt have a plan on how they where going to add them to the story. They should have had prepeared beforehand and cast someone that could fill an already planned role.
i just re-watched it as well, bc i love seeing old footage of ppl knowing what heppened, and in the episode 0, where we get to see the audition to see everyone, there was the youtuber paint that auditioned and the girl who plays josie in riverdale, and they look like such babies!!!!
Ryan was so good. I loved that he clapped for everyone but was honest at the same time. He saw people for who they were because he knew if he wanted the best singer he could do that without a whole show. Also Artie aka Kevin saying he lied in his callback about instruments 😹

Right, so I auditioned for the second season of this show. They basically gave you a list of like 4 or 5 songs you could sing that they ended up using in the next season of the show. Out of a group of like 6 they only took one person through to the next round (it wasnt me haha) I chose to sing I'm Yours by Jason Mraz and I shouldve done Gaga's Edge of Glory (not that that wouldve been good, but better at least) and it was super weird.
Idk if you have seen Damien's work with the Celtic Thunder group but if you haven't that will really show you his vocal ability. I mean he joined the group at 14 years old! I think that Damien just wasn't given very good songs with the exception of Danny Boy to sing. He is so much more of a Jazz, blues type voice like what he sang on the actual show Home, Blue Christmas etc. I'm glad they learned what worked for him for the actual show cuz those are some of my favorite performances of all time.

I think Ryan wanted Cameron but he didn’t want anything to do with the Show by the end of his run. He would have won if he hadn’t quit.

I completely agree with you--Alex and Lindsay were 100% my favorites/who I think were the strongest options. I was so excited at the premise of a younger, better Rachel to take down Ms. Berry a few pegs. THAT WAS LINDSAY! Plus, I have to wonder if the Marley/Ryder seasons wouldn't have happened if Lindsay won instead. We stan Melissa, but those two seasons were... something.
I hadn't thought about how Alex/Unique was styled, but in hindsight that makes total sense.
Gosh, I was just thinking a week ago that S1 of The Glee Project was 10,000x stronger than S2's cast.

Lindsay and Alex should have won season 1. Harmony could have been Rachels' rival in NYADA. Besides that, they could have used her character in season three to explore Rachel's insecurities. She could've sung a brodway song before Rachel's audition. That would explaint why Rachel failed it.
Alex had so much to add to the show. That is why he got cast in season 4 and 5 as well. It's a pity Samuel and Damian's characters were so boring. Roy could've been well written and Joe had a random arc with Quinn before being completely forgotten. Anyway, we can't change it anymore. It's done. Btw I hope things get better in USA so Lindsay can continue to perform in Broadway. She was so excited to play Elphaba. That's a big role. I'm so glad she's finally being recognized by her talent.
So as someone who has seen Damian perform live multiple times over the years he was very under utilized on the glee project, and on glee. The closest you will ever get to knowing just how good he is on stage and how charismatic he is is with his final performance on the glee project. He's got a crooners voice like Frank Sinatra, or Michael Buble, and with the write songs it can sound really good. I know you said Damian isn't a theater performer, but he is, he's just not an actor. He is very much a performer. But your opinions are very valid.
I think that part of the problem is that they didn't know how to write for a bass baritone. They consistently made him sing baritenor, which probably didn't help his voice.

I really love damian performances on glee(except bein green), it was so refreshing to hear someone sing with a smooth voice and a low register in the middle of all the screamfest(not that i don’t enjoy that too, but is good to have something different sometimes)
Tbh i believe halfway through they started setting everything up for Cameron to win, even if he wasnt the best singer/actor of the group, but once he decided to exit competition they went for Sam because he could fill that "christian pretty boy" image that Ryan Murphy latched on. Then they decided to keep Damien because he was a fan favorite. Damian also already had a big fanbase in ireland due to him being part of the Celtic Thunder singing group. Out of all of the cast at that moment he was the only one who already was kind famous, at least in his own country. Tbh i believe the only reason he was casted to participate in TGJ was because of that, to catch the attention of overseas viewers and the fanbase he already had.
I loved Damian from Celtic Thunder, but the writers didn't really know what to do with his character on Glee. As for Bryce, I love seeing him soar now with hit songs on the radio. He's done far better than he might have if he went further on the Glee Project.
my biggest problem wit it was how the “winners” of s1 got duped in the actual show like there was supposed to be 1 winner that would get a whole season and in that sense a storyline but then they said it was 4 “winners” 2 allegedly got 7 episodes and 2 got allegedly 2 episodes so it was really confusing when they would barely be in season 3 and i always thought lindsey got done dirty cuz she was the only one that actually only had 2 episodes everyone else got more
You can absolutely find the sexuality episode online, I just rewatched both seasons a few weeks ago! That specific ep is just a lot harder to find, and I am entirely convinced it was washed from sites due to Mark being there and the comments he made. Saying to Alex who at the time was barely 18 "Are you old enough to be sexy" and asking to see his ID... If I was Oxygen I wouldn't want that video out there representing my network either.

I just rewatched it, and I think he was freaked out because he didn’t expect it. Like Lindsay just a planted a kiss on him on camera without discussing it first. It wasn’t cool, and I can see why that would freak him out. And in fairness, during their last chance performance in that same episode, Lindsay gave Cameron a little peck next to his lips. So it seems like he was able to get himself to the point where he could kiss someone on camera. He just needed some warning

Second: Lindsay was asked by the producers to kiss Cameron like they did with Marissa but they didn't show it because they were clearly trying to create this storyline for Lindsay of being a fake bitch. Third: the kiss lindsay gave cameron on the stage after the duet was on the cheek.

I was completely obsessed at the time. I think you would get such a kick out of it, and at least one of the contestants went on to be a very big Broadway star!

In one if he early episodes Nikki said that TGP was a Bootcamp for Glee. They gave them feedback and expected them to come back and show them that they had incorporated that feedback. No one did that more than Damian which is why he was the (co) winner. I really felt the Cameron, but ultimate he was trying out for a job and he wasn’t willing to do what was necessary for the job. I give him a lot of credit for leaving and giving his place to Damian, but realistically he should not have been out in that position and should have been eliminated during one of the previous weeks. Marisa was super talented and was eliminated the slushy week. Both fo them struggled that week but they had to reset the cameras and wardrobe for him twice because he broke character.

I remember watching it at the time and trying so hard to avoid Tumblr and Twitter spoilers, lol. Damien was definitely fave and I got obsessed with Celtic Thunder afterward. I still follow some of TGP members on Twitter. I'm glad they've all found their own success afterward. The editing was for sure unfair to them.

I've never watched the Glee Project but I think that Damian McGinty already had a higher chance to get in than any others because he was already in a band called 'Celtic Thunder' in 2007 when he was only 14 and he was in it for 4 years. I'm not saying he's not talented because he is but i just think that there could have been a small bit of bias as he already had a bit of a following.
I always had a problem that no one ever talked about Damian being in Celtic Thunder. I didn't think it was fare to the others.
He also didn't even audition to be on TGP, he was contacted by Robert Ulrich to come and be on the show, and then he 'auditioned,' so obviously they were already looking to cast him, or at least use his following for views. (I was obsessed w Celtic Thunder AND glee back then so this was all a dream come true for me 😂)

god i was obsessed with the glee project. cameron and damien were an actual brotp for me at the time like. i cried when cameron gave damien his place. and i was gunning so hard for damien but im pretty sure thats just the patriotism in me as an irish person
I think it's important to mention what Lindsay was actually talking about in the vulnerability week was her experience in an abusive/toxic relationship and the producers completely took that and edited it into Lindsay saying she felt 'fake' to fit their narrative. I find it so difficult to watch that back now, especially because in the same episode they shared Emily's story with being taken advantage of by music producers. It now feels disingenuous on the producers part. I feel so bad for Lindsay because I'm sure she had a lot of hate at the time. Also I can't believe they then went on to edit the kiss (Which allegedly she was told to do) as Lindsay just kissing Cameron out of the blue and trying to copy Marissa/Samuel.
Thankfully she seems to have got past all the drama. I LOVE seeing her doing her thing, starring on broadway, getting engaged. I'm so happy for her.
I’m kind of disappointed how my Irish man was there for the first part and then just disappeared for ages... he’s honestly such an amazing actor in glee and I’m surprised he didn’t compliment the story at all... he just had his own storyline and then was thrown away, with Joe they did have him in the story for a bit but it’s the same with all of them unfortunately....
I kinda feel like this project was a huge waste of talent. The people who they cast not only were good singers but they could out sing half of the cast but they just dropped the characters without proper conclusions, rory and shipped back to Ireland but it was teased he lied about it kinda it was dumb. But it was really really dumb for the Christian dude whose name I cant even remember because his only character trait was being a Christian (I think it was jeff) he was just gone one day, I dont even think he got a solo? Whatever glee failed with this competition.
It was a good idea for a reality show, but they clearly didnt have a plan on how they where going to add them to the story. They should have had prepeared beforehand and cast someone that could fill an already planned role.

Oh amy - you are taking me back! 🤣 im 49 and i was at a youth theatre from the age of 14 til i was 18. Best years of my life! Amazing to be with people who had the same interests as you! It was very like glee. We actually did burst into song all the time. We went on holiday with the teachers to work on our techniques. I had the best time playing frenchy!

Right, so I auditioned for the second season of this show. They basically gave you a list of like 4 or 5 songs you could sing that they ended up using in the next season of the show. Out of a group of like 6 they only took one person through to the next round (it wasnt me haha) I chose to sing I'm Yours by Jason Mraz and I shouldve done Gaga's Edge of Glory (not that that wouldve been good, but better at least) and it was super weird.

Idk if you have seen Damien's work with the Celtic Thunder group but if you haven't that will really show you his vocal ability. I mean he joined the group at 14 years old! I think that Damien just wasn't given very good songs with the exception of Danny Boy to sing. He is so much more of a Jazz, blues type voice like what he sang on the actual show Home, Blue Christmas etc. I'm glad they learned what worked for him for the actual show cuz those are some of my favorite performances of all time.
Sadly I completely missed season 1 when it aired. So I've only seen season 2. I would love for you to also go over season 2! I really loved it!
