Definitely, musicals are fun but when you don’t live in England or America one of the only ways you can really celebrate theatre is with plays. Also, I’m not really a singer but I am an actor/stage crew person/theatre kid and so I always will prefer to be in a play. It means I can’t join in the celebration of “all the musicals I’ve been in”. In saying that though, I lived in the UK and went to see as many musicals as I could
Yes!!! My husband loves theatre (both musicals and plays) but he doesn't enjoy singing and dancing and would rather do straight plays and tech. And he is still a theatre kid in my mind for sure!!+

-falsettos was ROBBED
-the wizard and i is the best song in wicked
-defying gravity isn’t that hard, but it takes a bit time, it took me a week to belt it (probably because i’m a mezzo soprano)
-hadestown is good, it just didn’t really reel me in that well :/
-the hamilton fandom sometimes gives me a heart attack and ruins the musical for me

About the DEH and Into the Unknown riff thing, that’s actually the dies irae which was a song created in the 1800s which connotes death. It’s commonly used in music, and is used throughout Sweeney Todd, The Lion King and in lots of Star Wars movies.

Unpopular opinions: I genuinely think that Zoe Murphy is the most interesting character in DEH and I would have rather had the story revolve around her

I never understood the Lloyd Webber hate. Like, he’s written multiple shows that have run for decades. You don’t do that by being bad.

Exactly. I think people also forget that he has not only written many incredibly successful mega-shows, but also lots that people haven't heard of ( e.g.: Song and Dance, Whistle Down the Wind). I haven't seen any of these shows, and they may not be that good, but the fact that he has done all these smaller shows suggests that he is not *just* about making money: he also has a real love and dedication for musical theatre.
I think it's a case of separating the artist from their work. ALW has done some shitty things in the past, there's no denying that, but I still enjoy a bunch of ALW shows

My unpopular opinion that’s has switched: I bloody hated Hamilton I thought it was so overrated. until I watched it in Disney plus it slaps and Jonathon groff bops every time
This is me exactly. I didn’t understand the hype plus I thought it was overrated. Since i have heard people say it’s rap music, I already said no. I did however give it a try but it didn’t do it for me. When the show got on Disney plus, i was like ‘well, i LOVE theatre do why not give it a try, right? I mean I haven’t properly listened to songs really or watched any clips of the show so why not. I have access to it anyway’. Needless to say i cried my eyes out and i now love Hamilton. The fandom is just, you know, a lot sometimes
I never hated Hamilton but I definitely wasn't a big fan until I saw the show on Disney+. I can't even recommend the soundtrack to someone who doesn't have access to the Hamilfilm.

I loved Hamilton, but for some reason I disliked it so much less after it came out on Disney+ and I still can’t get back into it after almost a year 🤷♀️
my most unpopular theatre feeling is that i'm freaking terrified by heathers. the music is really good but the story is for some reason just nope nopity nope no thank you i'm too innocent for that. also i haven't ever seen it so that could be why. have seen illegal heathers though, and that scared me on a whole new level
and that one about theatre kids not just being people who perform in musicals is *chef's kiss* bc i absolutely love musicals and have like 50 cast albums on my musical theatre playlist but i've kinda been having an identity crisis because i don't want to be an actor professionally and am not the best singer so like... am i even a theatre kid?

I actually agree a lot!! A couple of my friends got into it when we were too young to really understand the satire and now it just kinda brings up bad memories for me... I'm sure the music is fine but I just don't think I'll ever love it.
If you’re not comfortable with the show that’s okay! I’ve watched it but don’t like it much personally. And there’s other shows like Spring Awakening that I would never watch because I just don’t feel comfortable with the content. :)
I have some opinions too!!!
1) Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again May not be a better movie but it’s still 2 hours of pure joy and I prefer it to the original
2) Lots of the same hamilton fans who applauded the race-blind casting and “immigrants we get the job done” are now saying “it’s just a musical, it doesn’t have to be political” when slavery and LMM’s controversies are brought up. It can’t be a liberal show AND non-political, so pls stop deflecting valid criticism
3) As no2 probably showed, I agree with what you said about liking shows while acknowledging their faults (I literally rewatched Hamilton last night)
4) For Good >>> Defying Gravity
5) Dogfight is the best Pasek and Paul musical and it should have done just as well as DEH
I love "For Good"...but the line "I ask forgiveness for the things I've done YOU blame me for" is basically saying "I'm sorry you're offended". I cringe every time.
John Mitchell Yeah that’s one of my big problems with the show, like i get its “america then shown by america now”, but the more i learn about the founding fathers’ crimes (including hamilton’s) then the less i like the idea of them being reclaimed. I’ve gotten to the point where i don’t even see hamilton as historical anymore, the show just washes down so much of their lives 🤷🏻♀️

On the Into the Unknown/ Waving Through the Window thing, that note pattern is called a Dies Irae and it comes from classic Latin music. Composers love it and use it a lot (especially in Disney movies).

I discovered ITH after Hamilton. But I absolutely LOVE the music and i can and in no way ever will compare it to Hamilton. They’re both so different yet both so great! I am extremely excited for the movie next year! Especially because one of my fav actresses is also in it (Stephanie Beatriz god i love her so much) and obviously Anthony Ramos is also in it! I love the cast album but i have yet to watch the show. I know the prerecording is somewhere here on TH-cam so I’ll definitely check that one out. That being said: Benny’s dispatch is a bop and I’ll dance to that song whenever I’m given the chance to
I feel like the generally agreed upon opinion with In The Heights is that it's brilliant in terms of music and choreography, but just story wise a bit bland. Bit too much soap opera.
And those things matter. Hamilton is, just by virtue of the truly *weird* topic and setting, something that catches your eye from a story standpoint.
unpopular opinions heeeeere we go. Avenue q did not rob wicked. Dear Evan Hansen did rob Natasha Pierre. The grease movie is way better than the original show. Most golden age musicals are boring and Stephan Sondheim changed the game. Company is Sondheim’s best show. High school Musical 2 IS the best one. In the heights is just as good as Hamilton. A lot of off Broadway shows are better then broadway shows. Twisted is by faaar the best starkid show. The closing cast of rent were better performers than the opening cast even though we’re all prefer to Stan the OG actors. The cats musical is far better than the movie and it’s a shame people’s opinion on the show will probably forever be changed. Cats is better than phantom.

The 4 notes from "Into the Unknown" are called a "dies irae" and they're super common in musicals. Once you hear it, you can't unhear it. You'll hear them everywhere.

While I agree that HSM 3 is a cinematic masterpiece, I ADORED HSM 2 because the songs slapped, the set was gorgeous, we got to see Troy and Gabriella in a new light, and honestly it could be because Sharpay got more screen time and SUMMER

Say the Cossete one again!! It actually gets on my nerves the amount of hate she gets. It's unwarranted, she's literally done nothing wrong. Our society has moved past the idea that liking someone means that you deserve their attention. Sometimes you like someone and they like someone else and it sucks, but you can't hate on the other person because of it. Eponine is great, but so is Cossete and I believe that the two of them would have become friends if Eponine didn't die.
That feels like a weird thing to demand from Hamilton fans... what if some of them do actually listen to rap?
I feel like a reason there's not much body diversity in musicals tends to be because of physical demands of choreography (depending on the show)
As a big girl myself I couldn't imagine a lot of big guys or girls in a Newsies role or smth without them being breathless while singing ya know
I think there’s two parts to this. Firstly, there are SO many shows where physical stamina isn’t massively important or needed - look at the examples I gave like Jenna or Heather McNamara, very little dancing etc.
And also, I don’t think we can assume anyone’s physical stamina based on the size of their body. There are people who are naturally bigger who have trained in dance their entire lives, are incredibly fit and trained to be in musicals. Hope that helps explain where I’m coming from.

YES. The music is a bit cheesy but that’s why I love it, I got tired of all these sad songs about depression and being lost and stuff( though I still rock out to Dust and Ashes from TGC)so finding Starry was a nice change

3 opinions from me:
- New musicals ought to be treated with just as much respect regardless if they are based on a book (E.g. Hadestown), a real life story (Diana) or a film (Back To The Future). Yes, it may already have a source material that many people can access but at the end of the day I think that is a good thing as it means it can make theatre more accessible for everyone and get rid of the gatekeeper aspect of theatre.
- I think the best Disney musical that is not of a Disney animated film that they have done is Aida. Yes, Newsies is extremely good but Aida's soundtrack is possibly one of the best I've heard regardless of it being produced under the umbrella of Disney Theatricals.
- I think whilst I would love to see theatre return, more needs to be done to protect peoples jobs and actually help actors with their mental health. I personally thought the way the actors at DEH were treated was appalling and could not believe they were treated with a lack of disrespect especially when they are in a show where mental health is treat with utmost seriousness and the moral of the show is to speak out if you are struggling with mental health or depression.
I love Newsies a lot, but YES! totally agree with you about Aida. That show is gorgeous.
@@seppyq3672 Absolutely. I mean still to this day I have only seen one other show thats rivalled Newsies choreo and whilst I do think it still is amazing, Aida is their strongest one. The music is just incredible and I think the story is so strong and bold (particularly as it doesn't have the Disney happy ending everyone expects at the end).

-honestly at some parts, it sounds gorgeous, but other times, I haaate it. I think I prefer it when Damon Daunno sings it, it sounds a little less squeaky idk. Reeve is incredible, I just don't love the super high bits while he does it.
-Waitress...yeah, I agree, it's kinda bland

-yeahhh, honestly, i feel like having mamma mia play out in front of you and being surrounded by people in real time is awesome, but I'm not a fan of how the orchestrations sound on the bway cast recording...
-chicago, i feel like has so many oppretunities to be interpreted in a new way, but its super long run on broadway kind of keeps every show looking and feeling similar. BUT I love the show so much that I still don't think its outlasted its run.

The thing about theatre kids hating other theatre kids I can kinda relate too. But I feel that I have good reason (kind of). I have one friends who just wants to like whatever I like and as flattering as that is, it gets annoying. I want to have one thing that can separate me from our group and then she’s just like, “OMG! I like it too!” I still love her but I just wish she would let me like something on my own. Everyone else I’m generally very accepting of. I encourage people to get into theatre (I can’t sing multiple part songs by myself😂) but I just want my own thing for a change. Wow. It felt good to type that out.

LISTEN UP! I only started watching glee at the start of this year, and i feel like i have been watching it for ages! I love it so much that i almost rewatch an episode each day, so it is possible for someone to start liking it, they just need to stick with it instead of seeing one episode and giving up.
My Unpopular Opinions:
- ALW is actually one of my fave composers.
- School of Rock is such an underrated show and i'm so sad Cinderella is taking it's place.
- Having listened to the Broadway megasix, i actually like the American accents. It adds another layer to the show.
Fun fact: the theme from Into the Unknown that’s also in Waving Through a Window is a variation on the dies irae, a song that is usually used to foreshadow death or something bad happening.

15:15 to build on this, I think that the only person in mean girls who couldn't be played by someone who is plus sized is Regina, because there's a specific line in Meet the Plastics that mentions she never weighs more than 115. Plus I feel like the plastics in general need to hold that "ideal" body type because of what they represent as characters.

Thank you! I can't sing or act for the life of me, and I never felt like I could be called a theater kid, even though I love musicals with all my heart. It just never felt like there was a spot for me in this community and I couldn't relate to people's experiences. This is the first time I've felt included!
I'm so sorry you've not felt included - that sucks!!! Listen, you're a theatre kid! As much as my Dad is who has never been on a stage and only sings along to Javert's parts when listening to Les Mis and doesn't really like any other musicals! We're all theatre kids!!! xx

To add in to the thing about people who love and go to musicals counting as theatre kids, I think that people who do lots of plays (but not musicals) should also count. I love musicals but I'm terrible at singing and dancing(although I'm working on it cause I do want to be in one someday), but I still do plays all year and I feel like people then think that I don't count, or that my end goal is to be in movies, when it really isn't

Maybe this is just me but personally I love SIX. The first time I heard I really wasn’t a fan and thought it sucked lol. Then I relistened and I fell in love! My favourite part are the harmonies❤️

Some unpopular theatre opinions of mine:
- Mean Girls the musical isn’t very good
- The music in Beetlejuice is nothing special, but what makes the show great is the comedy and the sets
- even though Sondheim musicals are considered the pinnacle of musical theatre, they’re not pleasant to listen to
- West End Heathers was too polished and lost a lot of the grit
- this one isn’t unpopular but Reeve Carney deserved a Tony nomination for Hadestown
- Moulin Rouge the musical is nowhere near as emotional or moving as the original film
I’ll say this, I liked the setup for the West end Version of Heathers, It felt more real and wasn’t as bland as the original, The original is still better though
Kind of agree on Sondheim. I don’t love the intricate rhymes and puns that are the first thing to come to mind with him. Much prefer his works that aren’t so heavy on that.

YESSSSS, EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO STARRY! AND THEN GO ON TIKTOK AND SUPPORT THE AMAZING STARRY COSPLAYS, we work so hard on these cosplays and people just need to check out this show. And my unpopular opinion is…let actors (mainly in drama classes) have a go at playing a lead so you as a teacher can get an idea of their casting type. My teacher does not do this and for years I‘ve stood to the side and barely said anything and the same kid gets the lead.

Some of my opinions! Let me know what you think of them!:
1: I love Hamilton, but people only praise the obc :(. The Angelica tour and original west end cast are also phenomenal! I also LOVE Zoe Jensen as Eliza and Solea is also an amazing eliza. Oh and we can’t forget Emmy as Angelica of course. They are all amazing and i have seen so much hate on other casts. It’s very sad to see
2: Amélie is CRIMINALLY underrated. The broadway album is amazing (i like the west end too! The music is different and really good! But Amélie’s accent is not my cup of tea. It makes her sound so angry and annoyed). It’s one of my favorite shows and the songs are amazing and soft. The guitar music is just so pleasing and beautiful and Amélie is such a cute goofy show. I love it and i wish more people knew about it :(
3: normalize people liking ‘basic’ musicals, please. They might have given more underground shows a try and didn’t like them. It’s okay to mostly like popular musicals! You can always branch out if you’re comfortable with that. But you don’t have to! Like what you like!
4: I’m sorry but I don’t really like Disney musicals a lot. It just feels to me like they want to find another way to make masses of money because they know they can make it awesome and cool looking. Tangled is one of my favorite movies EVER. But I’m just not feeling a musical, ya know? I will definitely give it a try though! Maybe i will like it and maybe it will change my pov

It was like the re awakening of my love for it. (Says the girl who's first musical was Evita when she was 7...or Starlight express I went to them in the same year so I don't know)

Also I think it's really unfair that most people say "The original actors are always the best and understudys are not as good." No...Everyone is amazing in their own way!
For example I like all Be more chill casts equally! (Yeah I did a bad thing and saw the london boot...) Stewart clarke was absolutely killer as the Squip but I think Jason tam was just as good. And Eric being the original as well. They all play the character differently and I love it!

This might be unpopular, but I agree on Damian. There have always been great bigger guys on screen, but Damian is one of the only bigger gay guys that I remember seeing. Growing up as a gay kid, I saw myself in him, and now that I'm a teenager, I have a similar body type. I think it mainly comes down to the fact that there is this stereotypical image of gay men as being not only skinny, but having a particular look (I can pinpoint the hairstyles, clothes and other stuff.) As a kid, I always wanted to look like that image because it was 99% of what I saw gay people represented as, but I had to come to the realization that I am just as valid as a gay guy. So when I see people who look like that image playing the one character that I feel looks more like me, it hurts a little. I'm sure the actors are great, but it bothers me a little, because this is one of the few roles that I saw myself in. I hope this is understandable. I don't want to come off as rude or overly negative.
I can totally see this argument. Plus it's not quite a double standard because there are already less roles for "bigger" guys in musicals. So, by having a skinnier guy you are reducing the body diversity in theatre.
If everything was equal, it should only matter about who can act the part but, everything isn't equal yet.

1. In the Heights is better than Hamilton, imo, because of how much creativity and originality there was. It's also because of the fandoms.
2 Great Comet is so good and was robbed.
3. Dogfight and Bare and 21 chump street and Waitress need more love.
4. Wicked isn't as good as people say it is. It's still good, but idk
5. While BMC (off Broadway)and Heathers and DEH are great, people should listen to Musicals other than those.
6. The last five years and La la land were pretty boring.
7. Grease the movie left out some of the best songs for the Characters to sing, like mooning.

the Damian opinion was mine but you actually changed my mind! I hadn't thought much about the way that is a double standard and you completely right. for me it's mostly because i have always loved the movie and i guess i always hope they cast people that resemble the movie actors when they make them into musicals. seeing slim guys play Damian annoyed me because he just doesn't look the way i picture Damian? at first i felt like casting slim people might take away an opportunity for bigger people to play him, but when their weight is not important to the role you're right that it shouldn't matter!
Thank you for not being upset I disagreed. I also think wouldn’t it be great if we had a bigger Aaron? Only bracketing “bigger” men as Damien’s gives them no chance of playing Aaron’s and wouldn’t that be awesome! There’s bigger guys who are sporty and popular and attractive and I would love that to be represented!!

High School Musical 3 is by far the best one. The fact you sang humuhumu was amazing! I actually have a story about that song. When I went to college for the first time my mom was very sad to have to say goodbye so to cheer her up I played that song and she laughed at the fact I could sing it word for word. It turned into the song we listened to every time she took me back to school.
Also my unpopular opinion is the Oklahoma has not aged well and is utter trash.
