Two years ago I lived for 2 years in Bangkok, at a building that was a bit nicer than yours (if that's possible). On the 7th floor, it had the most amazing (huuuuuge) swimming pool ever, with islands (plural) in it. The social area, included 2 movies theaters, huge gym, 24 market on the 1st floor, white-glove porter, and a few other perks. Everything new and modern. For my comfortable studio I was paying US$400 per month, :) :) I am living in Portugal now, hating it and dying to return to my beloved Thailand :)

It think that she really misses Albania. After the glitter of Thailand fades, and she tires of the congestion and bustle, I think she will return to where the food is still good, the land largely undeveloped (plenty of nature and trails around) and the cities are quaint (though modernizing). The people are friendly, and their language closer to her familiar Russian, easier to learn. She should set up a coffee and tea shop, similar to those she has admired across her travels! I know, I shouldn’t speak as if I know her mind. Sorry, Alina. Love to you.

After living in Bangkok for over 10 years and Thailand for much more I would say check the market for yourself. The quoted numbers were close a year ago during the glut but as a condo and home owner I am sure they are pretty off the mark for buying a condo today. Rents are still low due to the poor economic situation created by the pandemic and I had to reduce my rental fees to keep the condos occupied (mostly Thais.)

Keep it on the down low Alina, us digital nomads and expats prefer less westerners in Thailand, since many of us left the west. Also, the older condos tend to offer better deals, newer ones go for more. Advice I received from old expats, never buy a condo in Thailand. Just rent for a year at a time and move when there is a better deal or property opening up (trendy spots and neighborhoods change fast). That being said, I have found it is best to have a smaller 1 bedroom condo and then use a co-op working space when available. I suppose having an extra bedroom is ideal for a office space if you're locked down for pandemic reasons...

Looking at it logically, if the long-term visa is $20,000 for five years, then that adds $333/month to the rent. Also, you're a non-immigrant so presumably you've got to pay for healthcare. Plus it's a military dictatorship and the rule of law there isn't the best. I looked at their tax laws, their income taxes are slightly lower than Canada but on the flip side, their CGT is charged at income tax rates, so if you invested in real estate you'd be paying more tax on disposal and it also makes passive income more tricky because you can't do it on a capital gains basis. Everywhere has its upsides and downsides. If there was one place that was the best, everyone would move there and it would be an instant shithole. But it's always good to have more information so you can examine your options! And besides, it's so much fun shovelling snow off the balcony... 😐

So much good info! I was not aware of the 5 year visa Alex mentioned. I assume it is renewable. Still, for a couple at 20K each, that works out to almost $700 Cdn per month, so even though places to live are cheaper, it is still a fairly big bite out of the budget. Also curious about HOA (condo) fees if one owns the unit. Have to pay for all those amenities (and staff) somehow.

Sure beats overpriced Canada and overpriced and crappy Toronto. I am living in a medium city in BC and I looked at a house on a small lake , its nice but not glamorous, not a huge property. They are asking over 1.7 million for it. Is there better value in a different country ...you bet that there is. I am thinking of moving away from Canada.
