I will tell you - 3.2%. Do you realize what story this 3.2% tells? BTW, do you know that Bulgaria’s water supply pipes - where they exist - contain asbestos? Aнd there is rationing of the water due to limited water supply? And what exactly is she going to do living in a village with 5 grannies left there? Last time we travelled through a few Bulgarian villages we could barely see the houses, overtaken by weeds and wild bushes, Mother Nature having a full reign. Life after humans in all its glorious display! As for the clean air... you haven't been to Canada, have you? And in this case you have no clue what clean air and clean water actually are. I am Brazilian and during my youth I was dreaming about moving to "a better country'. Today in my 40s, having visited many "better countries", I realize that, even being a "bad" country, living here is not so bad. The sad true is that it is not because Brazil has improved a lot, but the 'better' countries have gone downhill. At least here, if you have qualification for a job with high demand, you can enjoy a good life in terms of earning/costs balance, plus you can make an appointment to good (private) doctors to the next week (usually). All the best in Bulgaria!

I have been looking at Bulgaria as a possible location to move to for some time now. I've visited: the first time only for a few days in 2019, then for 5 weeks in 2021 (amid COVID), when I traveled across a wide swath of the country, staying in Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo and Varna a week each. Like you, the low cost of living is a big attraction, as well as the abundance of culture. I still remember the first time I visited Sofia: from the imposing Stalinist style architecture of the Largo, to the Roman ruins of Serdika, to the neo-Byzantine churches like Sveta Nedelya and Alexander Nevsky, to Ottoman mosques and Jewish synagogues all within a 10-min walk from one another. And the rest of the country is equally enthralling, both in natural and historical beauty.

@@Burevestnik9M730 - OK, so most normal people, when comparing the cost of living between two different countries, compare common things, such as the price of rent or even the price of a meal at McDonald's. But not you. Nooooooo ... I've never heard of Merrel shoes, so I have no idea if $75 is good, bad, or indifferent. Were they on clearance? And soy sauce? Your comment definitely reads as if you've been sampling some fermented sauce, though soy wasn't the first thing that came to mind. According to the website Living Cost, a fast food meal, equivalent to McDonald's, averages around $7.56 (Canadian dollars) in Bulgaria and around $10.60 in Canada. A  3-bedroom apartment in a major downtown city (80 m^2 or 860 ft^2) averages $678 in Bulgaria and $2160 in Canada. While your beloved soy sauce didn't make the cut, a mid-priced 750 ml bottle of wine averages $6.81 in Bulgaria and $13.50 in Canada. A half litre of beer (16 fl oz) averages $1.01 in Bulgaria and $2.80 in Canada. Happy now?

Great choice, it seems that more and more foreigners are chosing our country! A few tips:
    - a lot of people from Sofia go to Greece for their beach vacations, the distance isn't much larger than going east to the Balck Sea.
    - there are more mountain ranges than you mentioned: Vitosha, Rila, Pirin, Stara Planina (the literal Balkan btw), Rhodopi, Strandzha, and a whole lot smaller ones spinkled throughout the country. Sofia is surrounded by mountains and you can take public transportation to some of them.
    - if you register an LLC for your business, you'll also have to hire yourself as the general manager and pay yourself a salary. This can be the minimum wage for that category of labour and would force you to pay in at least a little into social security. Many small business owners pay themselves a minimum wage and get most of their personal income as dividends, which are taxed at a further 5%.
    - Sofia is pretty walkable, but the sidewalks aren't great. You should watch your step or risk a nasty fall or a sprained ankle. This has been rapidly improving in the last few years though.
    - the air quality in Sofia can vary dramatically, from pristine to poisonous. Just a heads up, so you're not surprised. Luckily it's easy to travel to the countryside or catch a cheap and quick flight to some other European city for a couple of days if this is a concern.
    - Bulgarian and Macedonian are the odd ones out of the Slavic language family as they mostly lack a grammatical case system. Using Russian grammar won't work. That said, most locals know either English or Russian as a second language, so communication shouldn't be too difficult.
    Welcome and good luck!

I can't wait to follow your journey in Sofia, Bulgaria and every other place you will visit. A lot of Bulgarians don't understand why a foreign person would come and live in our country. But Bulgaria has so much to offer - beautiful places to visit, new culture to experience, people to meet, it's quite cheap to live a normal life as a foreigner in Bulgaria which is not the same for us locals (or at least a big percentage of us). I truly believe that you are making a good decision and I hope you enjoy your time in my city :)

I was very recently in Sofia and was blown away by how good the Metro is. As long as you are within walking distance of one of the stations, you never have to worry about any other kind of transport to the airport, nor the bus/train station. Also to note, you don't need to purchase those subway tickets you showed, you can just swipe your card at the little gates and they will charge you 1,60 BGN automatically. :)

Hey, I am so glad you chose my country! In general Bulgarians are very welcoming to foreigners, especially if they come and give their bit in economic prosperity of the country. You are going to do that, so you are more than welcome!
I see you are very well acquainted with the details about living in Bulgaria. If you know some Russian and you can read Cyrillic alphabet, it won't be so hard for you to learn Bulgarian.
Actually Bulgaria has 39 mountains in total, not just 2. :) Most of them are small ones, but there are some big ones - the two ranges you mentioned Pirin and Rhodopes mountain, but we also have Stara planina (Old mountain translated in English) which starts from the west border of Bulgaria and goes all the way east to the seaside of the Black sea. Rila is also very beautiful mountain with the highest peak on the Balkans and a lot of beautiful lakes. And most importantly - you have a mountain right next to Sofia - Vitosha mountain. So, if you like hiking and activities in the mountains, you will have a lot of possibilities.
I wish you the best of luck and I hope you like life in Bulgaria!

We were not sure that we could afford an early retirement - so we were also considering a digital nomad route - but life is so cheap in Bulgaria that we managed to live just fine. We are also originally from Ukraine and agree that Cyrillic alphabet and language similarities making transition so much easier. So far are very happy about our decision. Canadian, western Ukrainian heritage, lived and studied in Russia years ago, and going on 10 years with residecy in Central America. But I'm now middle age so close friendships and culture are pulling me back to eastern europe. Like you, I was impressed with Albania, just how open they were during the lockdowns, but language would prevent me from ever living there. I'm now proceeding with permanent residency in the one country I don't think you've mentioned, a place in the bad books with many in the west, but where language and culture are familiar and where the people are incredibly kind and welcoming. Anyway, I'll keep following your journey and see how things go for you. All the best.

Makes me proud you choose Bulgaria of all places and I hope you're happy with that choice. It's not perfect, but I'm sure you've taken almost everything (important to you) into account. I actually started watching you right when you were in Bulgaria 4ish (?) years ago as you popped in my TH-cam feed and been a fan of your content ever since. I really do hope you have a good experience in here. My judgement of life in Sofia can be harsh as a local, same as when you were talking about Toronto, it's a lot easier to critique when you lived here long enough, but looking objectively it's a great and a very safe place, especially if you have a good salary. You'll surely meet some rude jerks along the way, I especially sometimes have a hard time with how uncooperative the people can be, but my only advice as local is to remember that not everyone is like that.
Do you have friends in Sofia or anybody local helping you with the move? If you need any help or information, don't be afraid to ask.
