This reminds me a lot of a drill Mike Malaska wrote in his book called the Invisible Swing. In that book he talks about redirecting momentum. There are a couple pages (133 & 134) where he puts an alignment stick through his front belt loops and another in the grip end of the shaft. He then does a drill where he makes his backswing then swings down keeping his hips turned away and points the alignment stick and grip behind his right leg before his hands reach hip high down. It is an unusual concept for a lot of people, but if you do it correctly you'll feel the club take on a lot of momentum and speed that will accelerate you you through into the finish with no effort. It will probably surprise how fast the club moves when you do it. I think the concepts associated with these thoughts have been termed directing momentum and tipping the club out.
Andrew, thank you so much for this tip and drill!!! It truly is transformative for me. I have been struggling with instilling the proper move to get the body to turn through delivering the club on plane at proper point of impact. I thought this was crazy, but what a difference. It’s effortless, and produces on line and solid center hits. I’m a 4 handicap and tried for years to get a repeatable way to get the body to turn through in sequence…this solved my issue in an hour on the range. Thanks again.
Sounds like you were out of sequence John. I encourage you to watch some more videos on my channel. Once you blend the vertical movement of your arms with the horizontal motion of the body the game gets a lot easier!! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Hello Andrew i am 53 and you described my situation exactly. I am fortunate enough to have my own sim and used this feel drill today and am absolutely shocked at the results. For whatever reason this resonated with me. Thank you.
This was a fun one!! No body taking the advice ‘literally’ which is good!! But working that feel into your regular swing works remarkably well for those that lack supination and arm expansion through impact. Appreciate the support! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
This completely stopped my over the top move, since watching your videos my irons have been better than ever. Thanks Dave, hopefully next spring I will be able to come see you for an in person , live in the Charlotte area.
This move is also how to get the clubhead to release into the back of the ball. The lead arm folds, the grip end starts pointing back to the rear hip, causing a braking action so the clubhead can accelerate. Excellent video. There's really no way to come to this realization without training the hands to do what you're saying. Eminently trainable though. Well done, sir!
Very salient points from someone with a very high golf IQ. Educated wrists and arms give a golfer permission to move their body dynamically!! Thanks for the comment and welcome aboard! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Coach Andrew- I’ll be darned! I was on a plane heading back to Connecticut from Puerto Rico when I watched this video and as promised went out as soon as I got back to give it a try. I started out doing what you showed us about taking the club back and then very slowly flipping it over towards the big toe on my right foot. Felt strange as hell, but understood immediately the “feel.” Then after taking a few practice swings, I committed to making a full swing while making sure to keep that same feeling of turning the wrists completely over as I swung through the ball. Wow! The ball was really flying off the club face and going almost perfectly straight with a little baby draw action. it was really the first time I found myself at the end of the swing looking under my right arm and watching the ball fly. I really appreciate your feedback about remaining patient. I’m going to remember that and keep getting after this. I watched your video a while back about pronating the trail arm and that helped a lot, but this really drove the point home. Thank you too, Paul. 😊🙏🏌️♂️
Thanks Coach!!! I’m an 8 handicap but my spin out move usually cost me a couple strokes per round. It’s so much easier on my back. I owe you a beer! Merry Christmas
I stumbled onto this move in August. Went from a 10 to 4 hcp. Really. Went from shooting 87 to 75. Went from Driver, 3W, 9i on #1 to Driver, 3H, putter. 7i went from 150y fade to 170y laser
No surprises there!! Learning how to create speed with the wrists and arms in ‘sequence’ with the body is transformative for many golfers!! I’m so glad it’s helped. Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
I've recently discovered that in transition, after bumping forward and allowing my arms to drop, if I, at the right time, stall and retract my right (I'm a right-handed golfer) shoulder, I get what I think is a similar result that you are promoting. It lends much more speed..a whipping action, like the flicking of a towel, to the movement of the clubhead through the impact area.
I keep watching this. Fascinating. First time I’ve ever heard anyone focus on pronating the back forearm and supinating the lead. Makes so much sense. And yes, I’m definitely finding it transformative. Thanks Coach! 🙏🏌️♂️
Be patient Gordon!! It’s going to help you increase your arms speed and rotate the club face more proficiently in ‘sequence’ with the rotation of your body! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Hello Andrew just found you, brilliant video and practice drill. This is my main fault racing the body through, leaving the club face open. All the best for the coming festive season. Mel (UK)
Coach A- Seems like what you’re saying is start with a slight tug on the grip end, then while the Clubhead is still high and the hands are low to feel like you start to release the club while feeling like the shoulders stay back and just let the body respond rather than starting to spin the shoulders.
I know it's true that the extreme feels and sensations from some of the more successful drills can radically change one's swing (but it works the other way to: a wrong drill at the wrong time for the "right" guy, your golf buddy, can cause big problems, "we didn't mean to sabotage you Pete!"😂😂😂). The first thing I noticed about your drill was that it was the opposite of what Moe Norman would demonstrate in his "layed off drill" where he would let the club tip back the opposite way you are demonstrating and he would "oddly" hold that pose "static" for 10 minutes...funny to watch. But I see benefit in both these extreme feels depending on the golfer who needs a particular fix. Since I have about 5 fundamental flaws that plague me from time to time in my swing, I need all these extreme exercises to fix me at any given time. Problem, I have is I can't see myself, swinging and it is just a long trial by doing (practicing by myself on a deserted course) to get back to hitting fairways with some power. Great video, I know this will help with my sometimes tendecy to "chicken wing" a bit coming into impact.
I watched Moe live on numerous occasions in the early 90’s when I played College Golf. It was always mind boggling to witness in person the man that hit more golf balls than anyone in the history of the game - although that part is rarely mentioned!! Exaggerated ‘Feels’ v reals never cease to amaze me! - Moe’s ‘vertical drop and horizontal tug’ is a great feel for increasing linear momentum. No one moved the grip end of the club better on its approach to impact in my opinion. Bottom line you have to find what works best for you. This one is extreme ‘isometrically’ for sure but it’s impossible to actually be in this position ‘dynamically!’ For those that have never released a club head freely - it’s shockingly effective! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Agreed 💯 The INTENTION ALONE of the arms falling first will set off a chain reaction causing the rest of the body to respond appropriately in support. Getting students to believe that is the challenge 😖😂
Great vid coach! What adjustments would you make when needing to hit a fade? Open the body and face to the intended path with no change to the release pattern or the opposite and not let the face turn over?
You’ll change your release pattern for sure! Stand a little closer, play the ball a little further forward. Align left and aim slightly left. You’re going to exit left releasing your lead wrist into more extension than rotation!! The back of your lead hand will feel more on top of the handle through the ball which slows the ROC and keeps the face open to path. Best, A. 🏌️♂️
Great question…..Neither David - it’s a rotational release pattern. As vanilla as it gets!! The drill however is very exaggerated. So many golfers transition spin and leave their arms and club at the start line. I believe this FEEL drill combats that affliction very well! Incidentally a roll release is wide open to closed which is terribly challenging and not what I prescribe. Those with weaker grips unfortunately are forced down this road and are rarely successful. It’s why a stronger (leveraged) grip is favorable in my opinion. A throw release favors a much stronger grip with a more closed club face and or more flexion on approach which gets ‘thrown’ into lead wrist extension with less rotation post impact. It usually produces a fade which as you know is the preferred pattern among elite golfers who can hook a ball on command!! Unfortunately 80% of golfers don’t have that problem!! Hope that makes sense! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️
key question: on contact of the ball how is the hands positioned? Will the left hand logo be pointing downwards on contact of the ball or after or before ?
The position of your lead hand at impact will be very strongly influenced by the position of your lead hand at address!! Release patterns have to match your grip! However, every golfer should avoid spinning their body in order to create speed. You never want to leave your arms at the start line. It’s also fair to say that 80% of golfers should FEEL like their lead hand is pointing slightly down at impact!! The weaker the grip - the MORE supination is required!! Hope that makes sense. It would be killer if you had a student try these on camera. Show the progress and correct possible wrong ways to do it if they arise during the lesson.
I recommend you swing your arms down....don't pull the grip down.... very two different ways. One creates tension ( pulling ) and the other feels effortless.
the pulling seems to start release early, I try to feel a slight push on the grip and this seem to delay the release and keeps my left arm a bit straighter through finish.
@@runner.urbano2020 I focus on my left arm hand - that is my lead hand. I found that if I use the right hand (dominant) more likely to come over the top.
You are really showing an early extension problem and saying you need to stop rotating. That will introduce a world of flipping and inconsistency. Instead it would be better for the "spinners" to get a feel for how the hips should move...wich is away from the ball perpendicularly, not closer to it. What you are showing is pretty much what mybswing used to be as a junior. Gives some great speed but misses will be all over the place, as the face will not be stable through impact.
Never said to stop rotating! Rather to stall the spin phase and isolate the feeling in the wrists and arms. I’ve talked about EE on my channel. With so many golfers under utilizing linear and angular momentum they’re forced to throw the kitchen sink at the ball which in many respects causes EE! Once you leverage the golf club using the wrists and arms correctly then working in body dynamics is extremely helpful! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Exactly!! Most golfers do what I call ‘Pinning and Spinning’ - Slow arms speed is a huge problem for most golfers who throw the kitchen sink at the golf ball from the top! It’s often said that the body or hips move the arms. They do of course to a certain extent but arm speed comes ‘primarily’ from the arms NOT the body!! Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
They’re equally important. Angular momentum without sufficient linear momentum won’t transfer sufficient energy to the club head. Linear momentum without sufficient angular momentum to your point is also problematic!! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
awesone drill coach ! I needed something like this as homework because I'm totally lost with the quality and consistency of my impact. I would appreciate a next driver release video. 🙏. Thanks as always ! 💥🏌🏽♂️🇦🇷

once a rabbit always a rabbit.
Arms move arms?
Yesssss

Damit I got to do this off to spend coin on the range again damit
Get after it!! ⛳️🏌️♂️😂🙏🏻
Yeesss …..
Thanks Mark!! 🙏🏻
A minute in and still talking and no getting to it
Stick to YT Shorts!! 🤣🤣
Moving your arms faster is no good creating speed without an effective wrist cock and release at the right time
They’re equally important.
Noted!! Thank you! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
