Since Metallica has released 72 Seasons and we are now legally allowed to like their previous record, I'm here to say this is one of their most underrated songs.
This wasn't one of the standout tracks for me when this album came out but it's so good. The brief clean bridge with the bass harmonics and cymbal washes that breaks up the solo section and the outro has a certain Burtonesque beauty to it
What I love most about this video is that it's so serious and dark at first, but towards the end they sort of break character and just smile like they are having the time of their lifes, James is jumping with the crowd, smiling and Kirk is just on fire having a blast. Stuff like that just makes you love the band even more!

Not as good as the classic "Fade To Black" or "Welcome Home" but just in that area and that part from 5:57 and on, best of Metallica since Justice. Just pure genius and sexy riff

This song is literally saving my life right now. I'm an alcoholic, and it's been pretty bad these past couple of years. I've lost two jobs because of it, and was on the way to losing a third. My father was a raging alcoholic and a blues musician. So I get both my love of alcohol and music from him. I say "was" because he passed in 2011 when I was 26, and that's when I got really bad. 2:17 beautiful solo. Kirk is still one of the best lead guitarists out there. Not from a technical point of view, but for his melodic, musical and fitting lead contributions to the songs.
Well put Kirk in so perfect for Metallica. I think his solos are great fuck technical. Malmsteen is a technical genius name one of his songs???Kirk has soul!! Metallica is the bomb!!

Probably my favorite song from the album so far. Insanely good and incredible melodics. 33 years laters and these guys are still doing things their own way, trying not to pigeonhole themselves. And they succeeded!! I've been listening to them for 20 years now and I like them more than ever.
I have to agree. They really channeled some inner Pink Floyd in this song. I really thought this song and actually the entire album is maybe by far their best work ever. This album is extremely well written in lyrics and instrumentals, and has an amazingly good balance that sends your emotions on a rollercoaster. Almost every song is crisp, clean, and smooth.
That smile on Kirk's face at the end is one of the most genuine, heart-warming things I've ever seen. A musician who truly does what he does from the heart, and got famous along the way \m/
Pretty sure at 7:28 whilst Kirk is soloing James is in the close knit crowd jumping up and down. You know they are just fans of music and how it transfers you to another world. Awesome stuff man

Anyone who still says that kirk can't do good solos or was never good to begin with need to listen to the last 2 minutes of this song. That solo is worthy of being compared to the fade to black solo or the sanitarium solo

1 day James while receive the credit of being the greatest Philosopher of life and human emotion that he deserves. The knowledge this guy has of life is unreal and the ability to deliver the almost subliminal message of pain, joy, struggle, and hope. The power of the four of them will be compared to the greatest minds and artist ever recorded.
I was one of those..... one of those who stopped listening to metallica after reload. Didn't listen for over 10 years. Then the wife and I bought some guitars and started learning old metallica. So I begrudgingly picked up this album thinking I would hear nothing but horrible music. I was such a fool. This album kicks ass. Nothing but respect for metallica. Long live the kings of metal!
This has got to be one of the greatest metallica songs ever It's heavy, has beautiful mwlodies and at the same time so violent in the riffs New metallica is just precious
Now sure why this random guy has such a strong reaction to what you said but yes, I agree that it's awesome. They're not one of those bands that just sound the same all the time and sadly that's where they get their hate from. There are so many people who complain that they don't use the tones or styles from RTL, AJFA, MOP etc in their music anymore, but if they did, that's what everyone would be complaining about. They'd be like "This has sounded the same for 30 years! So boring!".
Dude, I totally agree. Everything about this song is so awesome. The Riffing, the melody, the lyrics. Guitar work is fucking stellar also. Hardwired is fucking awesome. METALLICA WAS BORN AGAIN... AND THEY WERE BORN AGAIN HARD!!!
the first time i heard this song i was like .. "mannn... why can't they make another power ballad with fade to black kind of vibe" ... i listened to this thinking it was the last time I'm gonna hear this song... a week later... I'd listened to it 1000 times 💜💜💜 #grammy4metallica
Saeed Alavi I feel the same slowly becoming one of the better tracks of this album. I think the ending is what does it for me and the transitions at the begging. pretty great song
Well, it's very similar to at least 3 Black Sabbath songs too... For example Wheels of confusion/The Straightener. it's kind of the problem with this album you can hear all the reference including selfreferences

People are still complaining about the crowd being cringe worthy or this is low budget. They are all members of the Metallica fan club. The band wanted it this way..they have always been close with the fans and look for any opportunity to thank them and involve them. And who else makes videos for every song on the an album? Manage your expectations. The childish first world complaints are really old and boring. Do your homework or at least ask questions before you make assumptions.

I can still see the expression that he had on that day as if it were yesterday.
I`d bet my life that you really made his day!!! That`s a nice memory to share!!!
drumstick or pick. Hetfield or ulrich. Just asking.

this is an incredible song. definitely underrated.

this song is ..perfect!
I liked because you were right and because of Opeth

Opeth for president! Halo on Fire is my favourite song from this album

Amazing
One of my favorite Metallica songs, period. It's a journey. Some of the best vocals James has ever done.
Agreed. It's like a modern Fade to Black. Such an epic song and I listen to it all the time

James in the crowd at 7:30 hahaha didnt see it coming xD
I think he's there a couple times, thought my eyes were deceiving me.

2:17 beautiful solo. Kirk is still one of the best lead guitarists out there. Not from a technical point of view, but for his melodic, musical and fitting lead contributions to the songs.
Beautiful, Kirk is brilliant ❤️
Well put Kirk in so perfect for Metallica. I think his solos are great fuck technical. Malmsteen is a technical genius name one of his songs???Kirk has soul!! Metallica is the bomb!!
Closest thing to a ballad on the album
Exactly, was looking for a ballad, really hoped they'll make one. I kinda have mixed feelings now.
Me too, I was hoping for at least one ballad
Minmataro718 This is their ballad
this and here comes revenge would be considered power ballads by Metallica standards so i'd say that this and here comes revenge are ballads
Yeah. I feel like it's pretty similar structurally to the Unforgiven songs, which is a very good thing!
It’s just like the modern fade to black man, look at that outro riff. Wonderful!
On reading your comment I have literally just thought that Fade To Black is my all time favourite intro and Halo On Fire is my all time favourite outtro.. spooky! 😱 lol

My favorite song from this album. Last 3 mins are great!
sick solo!
You mean solos? All solos in this song is realy good. :D
I don't hear any Pink Floyd vibe here. What album do you think it sounds like?
Juan Borjas There was an entire guitar solo directly copying (of course harder) than that of the great David Gilmour from Comfortably Numb.
Not really dude.
Dennis Reynolds i love David gilmour, that is my favourite guitar, but i dont think so , what minute?
That smile on Kirk's face at the end is one of the most genuine, heart-warming things I've ever seen. A musician who truly does what he does from the heart, and got famous along the way \m/
Or he just caught a shot of her nipples. Lol
Hahaha

Benziboiiii thats how volbeat was, he would just smile and smile while the show went on. it was so awesome to see that.
Yet to see them live but you best believe I'll be standing as close to Kirk as possible when I do for that exact reason
Pretty sure at 7:28 whilst Kirk is soloing James is in the close knit crowd jumping up and down. You know they are just fans of music and how it transfers you to another world. Awesome stuff man

Lyrics
Obey, obey
Come won't you stay
Sincere, sincere
All ends in tears
Endure, endure
Thoughts most in cure
Concede, concede
But both shall we bleed
Oh, halo on fire
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Allure, allure
Sweetness obscure
Abide, abide
Secrets inside
Deprive, deprive
To feel so alive
Obey, obey
Just don't turn away
Oh, halo on fire
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Prayers cannot get through
Return to sender
Unto which of you
Shall I surrender
Twisting in disguise
Dark resurrection
Lighting up the skies
Wicked perfection
Too dark too sleep
Can't slip away
Open or close
My eyes betray
Beyond the black
Come won't you stay

Lol, you just wanna "Fight Club" with women.. "no accounting for taste."
Metallica revolutionized the heavy music and now is evolving the concept of music marketing, living legends, only metallica can have the courage to do it ... the best rock band of all time ... time will tell ...
If you mean a vid for every track, they weren't the first. I know that Beyonce has done it... :D
And that's an entirely different market of customers. I had no idea she did that. Now Weird Al's promotion of his last album, that I was aware of.
But in contrast, they let different creators to do the videos, videos are not really the same as the other, each and everyone has its unique touch to it, they gave the oportunity to this artist to show their work and picture it for the fans.

The knowledge this guy has of life is unreal and the ability to deliver the almost subliminal message of pain, joy, struggle, and hope. And who else makes videos for every song on the an album? Manage your expectations. The childish first world complaints are really old and boring.
Do your homework or at least ask questions before you make assumptions.
Well if this crowd is cringey then I guess the crowds at every metal concert ever are cringey too. Because the crowd in this video is just like any crowd of metal fans I've seen.
