I think it’s a really good looking car! And for 30k it’s pretty hard to beat in terms of handling and fun while not being the run of the mill V6 pony car. Would be a fun track toy to mess around in. Great video as usual Matt!
@@Brian-jv8iy wrong. Toyota is a lot more reliable than porsche by far and continues even til today. The only reason why ppl think Porsche is "reliable" is because they don't daily drive em and they keep mileage low so they last for years. Toyotas are daily driven and last decades in general.

Thanks for watching till the end! Fun to drive alone, it's really close. The Miata has a slight edge with the open top experience, but the 86 is more tail-happy. Honestly I feel like they're pretty even from a driving standpoint.

Hey you're the first reviewer to detail some of the specific mechanical differences between the upcoming BRZ! That said, I do wonder if a more comfort tuned, softly sprung BRZ will actually be faster around a track. I think there's fairly good evidence that indicates a super-stiff, bouncy ride on actual roads (not made of glass) might turn quicker lap times...in addition to being more comfortable for daily driving.
In the future I can’t wait to own a Gt86/ GR86 or a BRZ they are both great cars.Can’t wait to have fun driving one. I have the GR86 as my wallpaper that’s how much I love the car. But Toyota and Subaru did a very great job creating the twins.
I waited a year and change for Wrxfan to do your thing. I have bought my last two cars, the 2017 BRZ and then my now 2019 MX-5 RF, due to you and your channel. I am considering getting the BRZ Limited for next spring (each car would have lasted three years about). Or, another MX-5 RF but this time with the Recaro seats and the Brembo brakes. Third car choosing from is a 2022 Mini JCW. Everything manual of course. Do you think maybe the BRZ could use the performance package that I loved from 2017? One more time for me Wrxfan, if you would :)
Thanks Dorian, I'm so glad the videos have helped you. I remember the Miata discussions. If your BRZ had the Performance Package and you enjoyed the bigger brakes, I'd wait to see if Toyota or Subaru do a Performance Pack eventually. The Mini is fun too, but a very different experience from the BRZ and MX-5. Between the ND2 Miata and the new 86/BRZ, it's a tossup in my mind. They're both equally fun, the main edge the 86 has is the better practicality and space. So if you're not needing more space or don't feel the urge to change cars, you can't go wrong sticking with the MX-5.
It’s funny how everyone was trashing the tires when the FRS/brz came out and now with the new one we get grippier tires and everyone wants to go with the base model because of how fun the tires are.
I am planning on buying a new car by Jan 2022. The cars I am currently debating over are this new GR86, the new Elantra 'N', or the new Civic SI. Maybe a Golf GTI or Golf 'R'. I want something fun to drive but dependable for ownership reliability. I will be retired but I still enjoy driving and I need to replace my current daily driver of fifteen plus years, 2006 Mazda3 5 speed sedan. And it must be a manual transmission for me! For reliability, I'd say the GR86 is the best out of all the cars you listed, mainly because it's the only naturally aspirated car on your list, and because it's been partially developed by Toyota. The Civic Si should be solid for a long time too, but the turbo motor may get carbon buildup eventually. Elantra N will have the 10 year powertrain warranty which is nice, and could be solid but also could have the carbon issue. The VWs will also have this issue long term, and VWs like to have electrical gremlins that can be annoying.
Awesome video the only think I disliked was the “1 lap at a time” rule, the pads are definitely not up to snuff a full track session, excited to see what they offer. 👍🏼

I was leaning towards Kona N's utility, but even ham-fist savagegeese was able to pull off some pro drifts. Because it's also a good daily, it'll quietly make an excellent instructor. I suspect Gen Z will have the most track capable drivers. Assuming enough of em are sold.
If I ever sold my low mile 8h Gen Civic Si, this is the car that I’d choose. Not everyone wants a 4 Door Sports car that everyone and their brother has out on the roads. I’d have to get a Manual Transmission though.

Too bad the ACTUAL 0-60 is more like 6.7 for the manual and 7.3 for auto… I was really bummed about that. It’s really not a quick car. But it feels quick and that’s what matters. How it makes u feel. Just don’t take to a drag strip cause u will still get beat by a Camry….

@@bosneb Yep I've seen a NB Coupe too! They made like 176 of them for only the Japanese Domestic Market, so its very hard to find! I'm sure that Coupe version is more structurally rigid, quieter, more aero dynamic, and safer in a car crash than the regular convertible NB. The current ND generation looks really good so I wish they would make a coupe version for trackday enthusiasts - sharing the nice roofline as the RF version. But yeah, we're grateful that the GR 86 exists anyway, as it is bound to be a great car too!

I'm so conflicted. I love these vehicles in theory, but not in practice. I live somewhere where I have absolutely no opportunity to take curves or anything like that so if it's slow in a straight line, there's no fun to be had. But I want to be able to get one and constantly throw them around the curves.
I wouldn’t call 6 ish seconds (manual) ‘slow’ as that’s still a decent amount if acceleration... but yea the best part about it is how it feels to control / turn etc.
Awesome review! I was looking out for your review as I knew you had owned a previous generation model, like I did, to fully appreciate the upgrades in this new one. I loved my 2015 BRZ and the new one looks to be better in every way.
Any idea what the 6th gear cruising RPM is now at highway speeds? I know the gearing is more aggressive, im just curious if this thing has to scream at 4000RPM to do 75 on the highway.
I was only able to briefly cruise at highway speeds (less than a minute) but the RPM seemed to be similar to the old car. This still runs pretty similar gearing to the old car, still has the 4.10 final drive.
Yeah I'm not sure why they aren't showing off the Neptune blue. Unfortunately I'm unable to request a certain color, the fleet just gets whatever Toyota sends and usually they just distribute all the cars that were at the launch event, which means there likely won't be any Neptune blues in the press fleets anywhere sadly.
Hey matt. Few questions for you ! 1. Worth the upgrade from a 2017 to GR86 money for the specs? 2. With this GR86 would you still choose a ND2 miata over this though?
Hey Justin, sorry I'm just seeing this now! 1. I think it's worth the upgrade, but it'll depend on your plans. If your 2017 is modified a lot and has more power, going into a stock GR86 might not impress you as much as it impressed me. If yours is close to stock (power-wise) this is going to feel a lot better with basically no torque dip anymore and way more punch. Could you modify your 2017 to be just as fast? Of course, so it just comes down to whether you want the OEM quality and warranty. I think the new interior is a really nice improvement too. 2. This vs. ND2 will come down to your preferences. If you'd appreciate the convertible experience and/or an even lighter, smaller car, yes, ND2 is the better pick. I personally think the RF doesn't handle as well as the soft top though, so if you're looking for a hardtop, I think the GR86 would be the better experience. The GR86 feels more solid and rigid in corners and just a tad flatter and sharper too. Plus the GR86 gives you much more interior space so it's easier to live with. Which car is the better pick for you will come down to how you feel about the things I mentioned. Honestly between the two there really isn't a bad choice though. Personally if it was just a weekend car and I didn't need a back seat, I'd go ND2 soft top, if it's a daily driver that also needs to do weekend duty, GR86 is the better all-rounder. Hope this helps!

What is the pedal placement like? Is it a good car to learn heel toe in? I have a Suzuki Swift sport and the pedals are to far apart it's near impossible to learn heel toe in.
Man I'm a little torn guys, help me out! Before I started to look into the brz I was hyped up for the new 86, but ever since around a month ago I've heard some things about the brz that makes it a better daily drive car, track am not sure, but I can't decide between the 86 or brz, any suggestions?
They're both great choices and will drive very very similarly on the road. The 86 is a little easier to slide around, the BRZ prefers understeer a bit more, but both are fantastic sports cars.
Not sure if it’s different in your country, but the Stinger only comes in Auto here... which makes it an entirely different car for me... plus it’s a Much bigger car... so completely different feel / class.

This seems to be the only car where universally, from what I’ve read, that a majority of people love the styling of the car. Nailed it.

Probably not a huge difference at lower speeds. In the city, the more nimble 86 might actually be a little more enjoyable. Worth a test drive!

I'm so conflicted. I love these vehicles in theory, but not in practice. I live somewhere where I have absolutely no opportunity to take curves or anything like that so if it's slow in a straight line, there's no fun to be had. But I want to be able to get one and constantly throw them around the curves.
You could move to a location where you have winding roads nearby 😏

I wouldn’t call 6 ish seconds (manual) ‘slow’ as that’s still a decent amount if acceleration... but yea the best part about it is how it feels to control / turn etc.

Any idea what the 6th gear cruising RPM is now at highway speeds? I know the gearing is more aggressive, im just curious if this thing has to scream at 4000RPM to do 75 on the highway.
I was only able to briefly cruise at highway speeds (less than a minute) but the RPM seemed to be similar to the old car. This still runs pretty similar gearing to the old car, still has the 4.10 final drive.
Please request the Neptune blue color if you’re able to if Toyota gives you a press car. Would love to see how that looks on this car on video.
Yeah I'm not sure why they aren't showing off the Neptune blue. Unfortunately I'm unable to request a certain color, the fleet just gets whatever Toyota sends and usually they just distribute all the cars that were at the launch event, which means there likely won't be any Neptune blues in the press fleets anywhere sadly.

1. Worth the upgrade from a 2017 to GR86 money for the specs?
2. With this GR86 would you still choose a ND2 miata over this though?

1. I think it's worth the upgrade, but it'll depend on your plans. If your 2017 is modified a lot and has more power, going into a stock GR86 might not impress you as much as it impressed me. If yours is close to stock (power-wise) this is going to feel a lot better with basically no torque dip anymore and way more punch. Could you modify your 2017 to be just as fast? Of course, so it just comes down to whether you want the OEM quality and warranty. I think the new interior is a really nice improvement too.
2. This vs. ND2 will come down to your preferences. If you'd appreciate the convertible experience and/or an even lighter, smaller car, yes, ND2 is the better pick. I personally think the RF doesn't handle as well as the soft top though, so if you're looking for a hardtop, I think the GR86 would be the better experience. The GR86 feels more solid and rigid in corners and just a tad flatter and sharper too. Plus the GR86 gives you much more interior space so it's easier to live with. Which car is the better pick for you will come down to how you feel about the things I mentioned. Honestly between the two there really isn't a bad choice though. Personally if it was just a weekend car and I didn't need a back seat, I'd go ND2 soft top, if it's a daily driver that also needs to do weekend duty, GR86 is the better all-rounder. Hope this helps!

Depends if you want a smaller, lightweight car or a larger, heavier car with more power. I'd go GR 86 personally.

What is the pedal placement like? Is it a good car to learn heel toe in? I have a Suzuki Swift sport and the pedals are to far apart it's near impossible to learn heel toe in.
Pedal placement is pretty good, should be pretty easy to learn heel toe on.

Man I'm a little torn guys, help me out! Before I started to look into the brz I was hyped up for the new 86, but ever since around a month ago I've heard some things about the brz that makes it a better daily drive car, track am not sure, but I can't decide between the 86 or brz, any suggestions?
They're both great choices and will drive very very similarly on the road. The 86 is a little easier to slide around, the BRZ prefers understeer a bit more, but both are fantastic sports cars.

I said f the back sit, I installled some amps and a large subwoofer.
184 ft lbs torque is still kind of low but hey it moves!

Maybe - but for that light weight it’s not bad.
It still needs more power. It may not be that affordable. I think the Kia Stinger GT-line is better depending on what you can get each car for.
Not sure if it’s different in your country, but the Stinger only comes in Auto here... which makes it an entirely different car for me... plus it’s a Much bigger car... so completely different feel / class.
@@MKu64 it doesn’t have to be exactly the same. Not talking about the GT-line but the GT with 3.3TT motor.
