    I have owned a 2T Seageate desktop external HDD for almost 15 years (that connects with traditional usb-a) and it still works very well. The speed obviously does not compare to today's ssd but the life of this HDD surely far exceeds that of these ssd ! In particular, I have on this HDD a lot of great high-definition movies (copy of blu-ray without lossless) on it that have file sizes of 4, 5, 6, 7 or sometimes 10 gigs on it, they are read without any problem from a player like VLC in my MacBook Air m2 and their primer is very fast.

    Yep, took my 2TB T7 back to the store. It was significantly slower than my 1TB San-disk portable. Both were on the same PC, same cable, same USB port. SanD was 459 write, T7 215. Then did a real world file transfer from PC SSD to the portable SSD. I used about a 1gb or little bigger file with several thousand sub files (boat navigation charts). SanD was 1min 10 sec. T7 was 8:02.

      Generally SSDs last longer than HDDs, they're more rugged, less sensitive to drops and don't have any moving mechanical parts that may fail. Lifespan might be affected by number of times you right data on it. For backups, you're not constantly writing so you should be fine.

I just got the sandisk extreme pro 4t, and ran iPhone backup on Mac, I can see sometimes it’s stuck, and errored out when copying directories with many files in it complaining read/write error, I did not try t7, but I heard that t7 is much more reliable than sandisk, to an end user, reliability is the most important thing than the tiny speed gain and size, do you think users care about them if the disk had data loss?

    Citing Apple's pricing structures is neither useful or meaningful in establishing the relative cost of SSD technology, because a disproportionately large chunk of Apple upgrade pricing is taken as pure profit.

    • @RawansReviews
      @RawansReviews  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re absolutely right. But citing them wasn’t to establish the relative cost of SSD, but rather to illustrate that getting a decent amount of storage built-in is very expensive-so going lower there and getting an external SSD might be a option.

    Hi. Great video, I am in the market for the Mac Air m2 & was wondering what bearing formatting the ssd to APFS has on transferring files directly from other devices (eg an Android phone or iphone, as I have both and not sure which I'll continue with going foreward)?
    Thanks for any help you can provide.

    • @RawansReviews
      @RawansReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, as long as you're plugging your SSD into a Mac, you can read/write to it if it's APFS. Your mac should also be able to read files from your Android/iOS device that's connected to it. So you should be fine transferring data to the SSD. The only warning is, if you might use the SSD on a Windows machine, then avoid APFS and format as exFAT as that's compatible with both Windows and MacOS

    I really appreciate the very thorough but straightforward explanation. Very helpful for a very low tech person like me..
    I'd like to ask your opinion and advice since I'm still not sure what is best for me.
    I'm looking for something that I can store a backup of all my digital data for long periods of time.
    Things like personal & family photos and videos.
    I'm not a professional or youtuber. But I do like to take & keep high resolution photos and videos.
    I want it for personal use mainly for memory keeping and backup storage that can withstand time.
    I want it cost efficient but durable as well so I don't have to worry about it getting dropped or wet or data getting lost or corrupted over time.
    What do you think is best for me to buy?
    I'm going to base my purchase decision on your recommendation.

      Would you be moving that hard disk around, or could it be static, somewhere in an office or desk? If you're looking for backups, then speed is less important, you're better off getting more storage capacity than speed, for each dollar you put in. That's why I wouldn't recommend SSDs as, for the same price, you can get 2-3 times the storage capacity of an SSD if you get an external hard drive. SSDs are more durable though, and can take a drop and some light water splashes much more than external hard disks. If you envision you might be in such cases, then you might need to bite the bullet and get an SSD. But if you don't feel you're likely to be in such situations, but still would like portability, then a 2.5" external hard drive will give you much more storage for the same dollar value. But if you don't even need portability, then look into 3.5" externals (desktop external). This is larger and requires a power source, but likely to be the best value for money in terms of dollars/terabyte of storage. Hope this helps.

    • @gem2148
      @gem2148 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RawansReviews no I don't need it to be very portable as I'm probably going to store it somewhere I'm not going to move it around much.
      But i forgot to mention that I need something that can easily connect to my android phone.
      I have samsung note 10 plus.
      A hard drive will need a power supply.
      But will 2.5" external Hard drive also need a power supply or can I directly connect it to my phone using OTG adapter?
      I was thinking of (Seagate BarraCuda 1TB SATA III 2.5" Hard Drive - 5400RPM)

      Of course. But make sure what file system format you use. If you only want to “read” files copied from your PC, on a Mac, then NTFS file format can be read by Macs. But Macs can’t write anything on NTFS (not without 3rd party software at least). If you want to be able to read and write interchangeably on both Mac and PC, then best to use exFAT as both Macs and PCs can read and write to exFAT discs.

    can exfat handle large files tranfer now? previously we have to use ntfs. but ntfs is not supported in androids.

    • @RawansReviews
      @RawansReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it can. What you're referring to is probably FAT32, which had a 4 gb file size limit. exFAT has (virtually) no file limit. (In theory, it's 16 exabytes--1 exabyte being 1 million terabytes). So you should be good ;)

    • @RawansReviews

      So I ended up going with the sandisk extreme. I’m following a tutorial on formatting it and see these option under the Format tab:
      APFS
      APFS (Encrypted)
      APFS (Case-sensitive)
      APFS (Case-sensitive, Encrypted)
      Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
      Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
      ExFAT
      MS-DOS (FAT)
      The tutorial is saying to erase so I’m also confused by that

    • @RawansReviews
      @RawansReviews  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes formatting will erase everything on your disk. If you will use it only on Mac, then go for APFS. If you might use it on Windows then select exFAT as that’s compatible by both Windows and Apple.

    Ok this all sounds good but what are you suggesting for someone who wants to as speedily as possible back up 3.5TB of Data From Data Center high speed NAS device to a portable medium that can be used from your Laptop with top shelf NVME PCIe Gen4 SSDs, and Thunderbolt 4/USB-C 4, connections also a 10GbE Ethernet Interface? This is a much more interesting question. With all the new Gen4 NVMe Laptops reading and writing around 6MB/sec then having a way to store the data onto Fast Portable External drive is also import. No one ever seems to address this issue.

    Dont go with those small conventional spinning hard drives. THEY SUCK, THEY WILL FAIL. opt for ssd drives like this Samsung T series. Save yourself the grief of loosing your data with a clicking spinning drive.

      After unboxing i first tried with exFAT, then formatted the drive to APFS.
      I tested ot quite a bit and found out that After been plugged in for a 20 minute or so, the speeds do get better to about 800/600 or so. Nevertheless, i think they saved money somewhere on this shield version and especially on this 4tb version.

      If you plan on only using it on Windows, then I'd go with NTFS. If you might also use it on Mac, then exFAT as that's the format both Windows and Mac can read and write to.
