    I did not expect the round that shoots Buffalo and grizzly bears to be effective on humans.

  • @zsreich
    @zsreich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +455

    The .45-70 is a proven round against aggressive bears and for hunting caribou. Remember, this cartridge was originally used to kill buffalo on the united states plains. Using the correct load that focus on velocity and expansion would be more than adequate for self defense.

      People put down bear with 30.06

    • @zsreich
      @zsreich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@Highgear145 of course! On the east coast that cartridge is used for the largest game, especially with a 220 grain bullet. However, for stopping aggressive large grizz and polar bears, You would probably want something a little heavier like a 375 h&h magnum, 45-70 +p, etc. But for hunting purposes the old 30-06 can take any game in north America with good shot placement and proper bullet selection.

    • @jimbo3615
      @jimbo3615 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@zsreich Yeah, if I was in grizzly or brown bear country and my choices for bear protection were 45-70 or 30-06 I’d take 45-70 every time. Sure, a 30-06 would probably work every time, but if came to life and death of a bear charge, I’d take the 45-70.

      .444 Marlin doesn’t get a lot of love but thousands of whitetail and black bear met their maker at the end of one. Great cartridge and I agree would make a great comparison to other thumper rounds. Maybe throw the old 30-30 Win in there if your really on a lever gun kick

    • @zsreich
      @zsreich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      .444 is amazing but usually uses lighter weight .44 mag projectiles that rapidly expand. This usually makes it not quite as ideal as the .45-70 for straight line penetration against charging animals. However, the.444 is great for black bears/large deer etc.

    I was introduced to the 45-70 back in 1992 when i bought a 45-70 barrel from Thompson arms. What a cannon from a 14" bbl. Shoot it mostly for fun because the recoil cuts fingers on the trigger guard. I bought a Henry side gate, similar to yours a few months ago. Brass was to add to my collection of Henry Brass rifles. Keep up the good work.

    Honestly I think calibers like the 45-70 or 500 magnum would be more useful in self defense situations that involve soft body armor. Because otherwise you're dealing with over penetration and possibly excessive use of force.

    • @zsreich
      @zsreich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Penetration has more to do with bullet construction then anything else. That said, being hit by 2,500ft'lbs + of energy while wearing soft armor may not be survivable anyway. Even a 9mm can crack ribs and give internal bleeding. These big rounds can literally shatter your sternum and turn your organs to mush. So the bottom line is that you don't want to get hit with these even with armor, especially not soft 3a armor.

    • @elementalist1984
      @elementalist1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zsreich kinda why I said they'd be more useful in self defense situations involving body armor, especially soft body armor. It might stop the bullet but it won't save you from the impact energy

    • @aviator2252
      @aviator2252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@elementalist1984 these big rounds have a lot of surface area, after hitting a soft target they tend to dump massive amounts of velocity into the target so even if it does go through it is traveling much slower and tumbling also in life and death situation you are not going to evaluate whether you need 9mm 5.56 or 45-70 you go with what you got and do the best you can to survive over penetration comes second to staying alive and stopping the threat

    • @elementalist1984
      @elementalist1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aviator2252 I guess I wasn't clear with my sarcasm. Obviously I'm not going to think about whether or not the home intruders are wearing body armor when I grab a gun.
      However I'll grab the 45 acp because I don't own a 9mm or 556. Personally I don't like 9mms and when I get an Ar style gun it's probably going to be a 308 or a pistol caliber carbine. Preferably in 10mm or 45.
      Though living in the country I'm more likely to be dealing with coyotes in the back yard... so I'd grab the 12 ga with 00 buckshot
      To further explain my sarcasm.. I don't think either a 45-70 or 500 magnum should be used for self defense situations unless that is the only gun you own. In which case go with it

    To catch and test bullets I use stacks of soaked magazines. To test my 45-70 hand loads I had about 3.5 feet of these magazines stacked in a box you'd use for filing papers. With the Hornaday 325 fr ftx bullet flying at between 1800-2000 fps I got a full yard of penetration and the bullet mushroomed out to .71 caliber from it's original .45.

    in track and field, there are sound triggers that start the racer's time from the report of the starter's pistol. wire that circuit to the camera instead of a clock, so the camera turns on when the weapon reports?
