As a candle maker: do not light candles with that much excess wick, it's a fire hazard and lowers the overall luminosity of the flame leading to burnout that much faster. If you want to try again, go with a thicker wick? It'll burn hotter than the standard wicks.

As a candle maker, this video concerned me for a couple reasons! 1) Crayons are made with a different type of wax than candle wax (specifically paraffin wax, which is a cheap wax when it comes to candles as it is a petroleum byproduct, and can release carcinogenic soot when burned!). These chemicals are dangerous to burn in the form of a candle! 2) They also add pigments to the wax and it is what clogs your wick. Even using a small amount of crayon wax to color appropriate candle wax can clog your wick and make it not burn correctly or at all.
Crayons are colored by "pigments" which is tiny particles of color inside a substance, which means they are not soluble (as in it doesn't bind to the wax and just floats around in it instead). Proper candles dyes (dyes and pigments are VASTLY different) bind to the wax molecules themselves which prevents the wick from clogging. A candle works by sucking melted wax through the wick. If the pigments cannot be sucked into the wick because it wasn't bound to the wax itself, it will just clog up the intake to the wick, which is why they fail so easily. Dyes bind to the wax molecules, pigments just float around the wax molecules. This is similar with using mica powders (which is incredibly fine grain forms of glitter commonly used in resin and soap making to give color).
MELTING wax and BURNING wax through a wick are vastly different. A candle relies on melting of the wax in order to facilitate being sucked into the wick. You aren't just melting wax when burning a candle. If you want to use crayons to color wax melts, I could see that being much more plausible than it as a candle, because wax melts literally just melt the wax and let off fragrance from the melted pool. Candles are designed to work long term rather than wax melts which are used in much shorter time frames. The problem is the WICK, not the concern if a wax will melt.
EDIT: Added from my other comment that looks to have gotten buried... The "Cracked layers" aren't actually cracks at all! It's just layers of wax cooling as soon as the wax hits the much cooler container as you pour! You see this in actual candle making too! If you were to warm up the container to 130 - 150*F by putting it into an oven on warm prior to pouring the wax, you wouldn't see those lines at all! This is a common practice in candle making.
EDIT 2: Clarified the "additives" in point 1 to mention that the wax itself (paraffin wax) creates carcinogenic soot when burned. Crayola doesn't decide to make it harmful, they just decide to use paraffin wax which is not toxic to use, but is toxic to burn. It's just the nature of the type of wax in crayons because it is softer to enable being smeared on paper. Can't blame Crayola like I originally insinuated, because melting crayons for candles is using it in a way Crayola did not intend.

Okay so as someone who is a former employee of Crayola I might be able to shine some light on this! Crayola crayons are made using 3 main ingredients: Wax, Pigment, and Clay. The clay is included to increase the strength of the crayon and also makes it a bit harder to melt down that just plain wax. I would assume the clay and the heavier pigments (because it has to do more than color the wax, it has to be able to lay down color on paper) it would prevent it from being good for a candle.
Well crayola makes crayons to color, not to burn. Not going to whine about their burning abilities.

My theory is that the Crayola wax is specifically designed to be non-flammable, so it just clogs up your wick and makes it harder to burn the regular candle wax.
That makes a lot of sense. They are in fact made for children. And it would be quite weird of they would be flameble. Right?
It's the pigments that don't burn, you need a lot more pigment in a crayon than you do in a candle. If you've ever tried to use a candle as a crayon you can see they don't leave much of a mark.
@@PeculiarGirlKelly This is exactly what I was going to say. The issue is the intensity of the pigments. I've made candles before using crayons to color the candle wax and it's crazy how little crayon you need to color candle wax. One crayon is enough for a large jar candle.

According to Hank Green, when a candle is burning the fuel is actually the wax not the wick.
So whether or not it’s on purpose it appears that Crayola crayons don’t have enough of the correct type of wax to fuel like fire.

@@official_aperson actually i have lyphodemia, which means I retain water in my legs. I had to reduce the amount of salt that I eat and take medication for it. But I live my SaltyCrafter. I know I'm lucky because I have the money to get it and appreciate it all the more

I used to have a candle making book that was printed sometime in the early 80's and it recommended using crayons to color the candles. The amount of crayon used was very small compared to the rest of the candle wax which was just a mix of paraffin and beeswax.

I'm sure someone else has said this, but how easily the crayon burns isn't correlated with how easily the crayon melts.
And given how popular melting creations is, it makes sense that Crayola formulated their crayons to resist burning (igniting) as much as possible to prevent injuries and lawsuits.
But yeah... I mean, ice melts very easily but that doesn't mean you can make a candle out of it.

You know, I think you're right Jackie. It's very likely that Crayola may have changed their wax formula. If you look on the back of their craft supply packaging it say that to help the climate they now make many of their products with recycled plastics instead of always brand-new materials. That also may have been part of why the candle did not work, but thank you Crayola for being enviromentally conscious.

1:59, I learnt this as a child and still make decorative yet semi-functional candles as gifts, but the wax must be proper candle wax and the candle wax to Crayola ratio has to be 2:1 or 3:1 preferably 3:1. the crayons are really just for the colour not burning and if you want cloud/fluffy wax, add cornstarch slowly and gradually while over low heat (this mixture will solidify and harden faster than if it was just regular melted wax and crayon mixture).
Adult supervision required (even if your 30 and doing this (hot wax burns and pouring can be hard to control if you are not confident/skilled).
as someone who makes candles, I have found that crayons in general are more color than wax. though they are good at making pretty colored wax, so if you want fun colored candles throw in a crayon or two with the wax before you heat it up.

I have discoverd that if you need to peel crayons, instead of trying for hours to peel them normally, you can just put them in cold water and the wrappers just fall off.
I had to peel a bunch once and this really helped me!!
I used to make candles with crayons all the time as a kid but I dont remember the ratio we used but they all worked well. (Typos are a thing don’t make a big deal out of them)

I’m not a candle maker but I have a suggestion. After going and testing through all my crafts supplies today I was going through my crayons and remembering that the cra-Z-art crayons felt and when I drew with them on paper felt like there was ALOT more wax so maybe if you try these crayons and do a part 2 to this it might work better. I don’t think the crayons will be good for candle making, but are better for art making lol. Like those cool melted crayon things everyone was making YEARS ago.
It could be helpful if you add some candle wax in it, but we can have it as a decoration piece than using as an actual candle.
The key isn't the meltability, it's whether the wax can be converted to fuel.
I remember doing a candle making craft around 3rd or 4th grade (age 8-9), it was part of a history unit about life in pioneer days. The teachers melted wax in large cans and used crayons as color, then the kids walked in a circle around the room and dipped a candle wick in each can to make a taper candle. Of course that was 40+ years ago so I don't remember what kind of wax (may have been beeswax) or what brand or crayon...and I don't remember if we actually burned the candle...but I do remember circling the classroom.

when you use the metallic crayons, you can rub the places where you used them to 'shine' the lil metallic specks...they really do show out much better and not just look blackish.

When I was a kid, my mom teached us to make candles. We dyed the parafin with crayons because the wax colors were very expensive

When I was 9 I wanted to sign up for this event that was happening where you sell stuff that go with there theme the theme was reuse items and make it different so me and my mom and dad came up with making candles but we would color them with crayons we would make big 5 lb batches then add 1 or 2 crayons into it they ended out great!

I have done candles with crayola, but I used them as coloring, not as a base (after learning the hard way they don't melt, exactly the same problem as many experiments with crayola candles). They color wonderfully, though. The wax chips accept the crayola as their own very easily. Also, next time use a flat silicone mould, the way the wax peels right off is so satisfying. You get a perfect colorful circle you can recycle into more candles

Ok so I played this game for about a year heres what I "learned" rosemary actually works as a candle as long as it can drip instead of pool( bullet shapes) crayola is great in small amounts for shading wax. ( you mainly get pastels) ( I used soy wax and bees mix)with using non traditional waxes like crayons the quick melt is less important than the stay power of the melt that being said crayola is great for "decorative candles" cuz its gardens hard and non sticky easily cleaned with water and soap.
