Came out great, I don't need anymore bowls but I might consider using similar techniques to create some wooden buckets that I've been wanting to make.

I know you know what you're doing. You do an amazing job. But OMG seeing how close your hand gets to that unguarded table saw blade makes me cover my eyes. You really do inspire me to try these projects. Please be careful! I'm old and I worry. 😁

There must be another way to secure those small pieces when cutting with your miter saw. I was holding my breath when you cut them. You only get one set of fingers!!!

Sorry but your hands are far to close to the chop saw blade. I would be looking to make some form of holding device. One slip could be very cost. Sorry for being negative but better safe than sorry.
Hi. I am enjoying your videos since recently finding them. While you display confidence and operate your tools safely, your fingers were quite close to the miter saw blade. Have you heard of the 10 million dollar stick? It is a safety device for holding small-ish pieces at the miter saw. You might want to look into it. It might have been useful for this project although with the stop block and second setup block, there may not have been room for it. Stay safe and keep up the great work you do.

The special router bits are nice because they give you the right angle right away. But other than that it seems like a cut simple enough that it can be done either with a tilting router table and a straight bit or even just a table saw with a tilted blade.
I'd never heard of this router bit before but I'll definitely try it! Your bowl turned out great, can't wait to give it a try.

I have 4 different brands. I like whiteside the best. I have a video tutorial on how to set it up
Nice job! Is the thickness of the padouk and cherry the same? I ask this because I wonder if you place the sides on an angle, doesn't the width change? I hope you know what I mean.
Yes, same thickness but the birdmouth router bit makes it all work together perfectly

Do you ever shop for hardwood at Fat Andy’s? I always thought they were a convenient shop with a wide selection. I haven’t been there for quite a while though.

@@woodworkingwithSkyler that’s too bad. They did have a big fire there recently. No I get a lot of my wood free as scraps from local cabinet shops. It’s high quality and great for small projects like your bowl.

Hi Skyler. Just found your channel, so new subscriber. Love the way the bowl came together Cool router bit process. Looking at the finished cut after the Birdsmouth bit, it is a very small lip. Does it really hold well?
Beautiful bowl and I learned a lot - thank you! Awesome work! One thing confuses me: the length of the tapered side of the cherry should be longer than the length before the taper yet you cut the padauk the same (pre-taper) length and the pieces seemed to match up perfectly. What am I missing?
I bought a tape dispenser from Amazon that holds 3/4 and 2 inch tape
It makes it easier on glue ups
did you have to mill the paduk down to 2 inches thick? the link shows 3/4 inch thick? thanks
I bought it at 3/4 in thick and milled it down to half inch just like the cherry
I found your video while searching for tips on making a segmented salad bowl with sloping sides. You did an awesome job. Do you know of where I could find a method to calculate the relationship between the diameter of the bowl, the width of the staves, the slope of the sides and the angle on the edges of the tapered staves?

Padauk looks great when first milled but turns dark brown within a few months.
how did you set the router bit height and depth? also, did you run into any issues with the fence opening when you got to the end of the stock?, thanks
I did lots of test pieces until I got it just right. After I did it a few times it became so much easier. Once perfect, I cut the joint on a piece of scrap wood and kept it as a set up block for next time will use same thickness material. The opening of router table was not a problem because once halfway through I moved the pressure on left side of board. If I got a bit of issue I would cut off the last inch of the board. That’s why is best to start with oversized pieces

Skyler, love your videos but I do worry about how close your fingers get to your mitre saw. Let’s remind people about saw safety, they might not be experienced woodworkers, I would hate people to have an accident.

What a great simple way to construct a bowl! No miter+bevel cuts. The birdsmouth bit establishes the bevel on straight paduak pieces, and mitering the cherry pieces provides the taper of the bowl sides. I just got some Odie's Oil to try too based on reviews of its finish & ease of use. Thank you!

Thank you for the video. Great looking bowl. You are very talented and a great instructor. Is there a certain setup for the birds mouth bit or is it just flush with the top of the board? I think i may give this a try😊. Keep up the awesome videos.
The setup could be a bit tricky. But once you do it a few times is really easy. They also sell setup blocks for it and those are a great starting point. Once I set mine up for let’s say 1/2 in, I route the profile then keep that piece as a setup block for next time

Beautiful meticulous work. You are an excellent woodworker. Nice to see you have a very extensive assortment of good quality tools! Only suggestion I would have is to put curtains on the windows and remove the manual release rope for the garage doors. Release rope makes it too easy for intruders to open the door.
That is excellent advice. Thank you. However, I have two dogs that will bark at any beep, good alarm system and about 15 cameras all around the property and house that beeps when detected motion. Also there are people here 24/7.

Very interesting - I am tempted to buy these bits and try some projects. One question - did you only put the 6 degree taper on the Cherry boards and Padauk boards were straight without any taper on them? Am I understanding this correctly? Thanks in advance for your help.
That is correct. Padauk we’re straight. Every birdsmouth joint requpne birdsmouth edge and one straight that will fit into the birdsmouth edge. Hope that makes sense. So you have two choices. 1- put one birdsmouth edge one every board so every board has one straight edge. 2- like I did every other board has both edges routed and every other board is straight on both edges. I chose option 2 for this as is impossible to route birdsmouth edges on tapered pieces

But my question was about the slight taper needed for bowl to have wider mouth than the base. For that if understand correctly, only the straight boards need taper and birds mouth boards don't need any taper. Right? Thanks in advance. 🙏
