That seemed like a lot of work to make a bowl, but at the same time, that seemed like ULTRA satisfying work to make a bowl. Well done!

The result is wonderful, the process however convoluted, shows remarkable flying by the seat of your pants to overcome tool limitations. This project will also instill a sense of priority in the way you start to tackle each one,a lot of time can be saved when there is an orderly plan of action.Planing the boards first, then cutting into 4 identical squares and making sure the glue-up was aligned would have saved a few steps.Maybe you can make another sled for the blade set at 45,would much rather see that, rather than twirling the bowl with the blade fully extended at 45,super-scary!All in all, never cease to amaze.

  • @DMZ739

Watching the work being done and the choice of tools might give the impression you do not know what you're doing, but in reality this is the work of an inspired, creative and talented artist who knows her tools. The final simple beautiful bowl do not render justice because ignorantly one might say 'That's easy to do on a lathe!' True. But doing it without a lathe. That's a different story. You're a true artist.

How to corner an untapped market:
Mainly men watch woodwork videos. Mainly men like gorgeous women. Therefore find a gorgeous woman who makes inspirational woodwork pieces and make videos of her doing that.
Give her the same name as the river which separates Devon and Cornwall, to many British people the magical river you cross as you reach our most wonderful holiday county for your annual two weeks in paradise.
Hey presto, that pretty much takes care of all elements necessary. Oh, unless while carrying out the woodwork Tamar could stop for a break to eat some chicken vindaloo with pilau rice and king prawn puri. That would be the crowning glory, and would complete the package. Anyway, I'm subbed now.

That was clever. I have to admit, I would have never thought of that. A tip: when you glue up two pieces of wood like that sprinkle a pinch of salt over the area, it provides grit to keep the blanks from slipping and melts away when the glue dries. Makes it easier to keep everything aligned.

OR... you could have just used hand tools like carving gouges, an adze, draw knife, spokeshave and sloyd knife, especially since you used a soft wood. Not only would the process have been more straight forward and less noisy, you might have listened to some beautiful music and created a lasting memory of the bowl carving experience.
I'm actually impressed with your final product because when you cobbled together that router jig with no mock-up, I couldn't figure how you were going to be able to get the proper shape. Nice bowl.
Tip: My rule of thumb; no board off the shelf is ever square, truly flat or straight. Always check grain direction; both for milling and later seasonal movement. Tip #2: Read and learn from the masters.

Fantastic job. Actually, I am surprised how great that Poplar looks. I would not normally choose that wood for this type project but it looks great. I make a lot of bowls by hand as sort of production item for me...you will be surprised how fast and easier it is to do it by hand using all angle grinder attachments. I first drill out some excess with a forstner bit, using a Arbortech product called Turbo Planer to rough it out, then sand it using flap sanding discs on the angle grinder. You'd be surprised how round you can get it. Your end product looks great!

Thanks so much! That seemed to be the most popular method when I searched how to make one without a lathe. I’ll have to give that a try sometime.

hhhhh I had the same problem.
    couldn't use a hammer too,
I had to make a circle 8cm deep and 30cm wide and couldn't figure out how since I don't have a band saw , so did a dance between a router and jigsaw,
sadly I had to give it up and went with 4cm deep still turned very bad, if only you had made your video earlier,
great skill and head for figuring out what to do with what's available.
    lovely bowl.

My dear lady let me tell you something, I love working with wood I’m not very accurate my family (that’s wife and six daughters)make me out to be a cabinetmaker where as I am a wood butcher in reality I wish I had the brains and the nouse to start my own business and if that was to happen I would employ you instantly obviously you would name your own salary and get the company car or van your choice and extra holidays also medical benefits and I’m coming to that yes, yes, yes, and you get the very best top of the range lathe , and god knows what you could make with a scaffold plank pair of pliers absent nail and a broken screwdriver, and ma’am you are gifted.

Hahaha! Thanks! The lathe part is tempting 😉

It looks great, unfortunately it didn't help me any. I' don't have a lathe or router, and I lack the money for such things, so I've been trying for hours to find information on making such things without them. I figure it must be possible, but I can't find anything regarding how.

Anything is possible. You can do this with just a gouge.

While I sympathize with you wanting a band saw, the problem with having one is it eliminates the need to think through the problem and innovate a solution.

      Bandsaw?
That was supposed to say lathe.
It looks like my brain thought faster than my fingers could output the type.

Great work. Perhaps the same idea for emptying the inside could be used to make the exterior round. Using a convex guide instead of the concave you showed. It should make the second part of the job easier
It would be great to know this idea worked for you

Thanks for sharing, interesting solutions. I would suggest exploring the world of hand tools. Like a lot of people youre trapped by the limits of the machines youre using. A good set of chisels has no limits on what you can make with it

2:01 You can use the side of the hammer to hammer the nails in tight spot as well. ;-) And btw: That bowl came out very nice. Good thinking with those jigs!

  • @scotttovey
    @scotttovey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Rather than relying on collet extenders for tasks like this,
    look for longer router bits.
Designing your jig with adjustable arms so that it is multipurpose rather than a one shot wonder, would also make the project more enjoyable as well as allow for larger bowls.
