This Haydn Trumpet Concerto has been one of my favorites for eighty years of my life, featuring numerous musicians all of whom were excellent but now, all things considered, this is the most luminous performance ever! Allison Balsom clearly has mastered Haydn’s Concerto most brilliantly. Bravo! Bravo! And thank you!
Magnificently performed by this British lady. A pleasure to hear her produce exquisite sound from her trumpet. No matter how often I listen to her perform, it remains magical.

Thank you for, among other things, recognizing that the composer's name was Josef Haydn. It galls me no end to hear classical DJ's refer to him as Franz Josef, apparently confusing him with the Austro-Hungarian emperor. A typically wonderful performance by Maestra Balsom, who, the old male chauvinist in me compels me to say, is also not difficult to look at. Bravissima!

Very good played, soft and good played together with the orchestra. Fine cadenza. But I shall also listen to Hardenberger and perhabs Trine *Thing Helset and André.And don´t forget Marsalis.
"Berrnt Ortner" nov 2015, I find Balsom above the three, despite Håkan Hardenberger's teaching her (he was to her what Leopold was to Wolfgang: a wonderful musician who propelled his pupil as high as making him/her totally overshadow himself) and Maurice André's highly deserved reputation (as well as Wynton Marsalis' in jazz). Trumpet will never be played the same after Balsom (her success is not primarily due to the accurate, velvet yet powerful, sound that people have learn to know and love, but on the intelligence, sensibility, hard work, tact, that she put in her selecting, transcripting and arranging all the classical pieces she plays). Is that a wrong note at 6:32, or was it intentional? The version of the Haydn that I own doesn't have the same cadenza that she is playing.

It's customary for the cadenza to be composed by the soloist. We'll never know if it was intentional or not! :)
Cadenza by definition allows and insists on personal expression and mastery of form and individual interpretation....

This sound fuller than Andre's in my opinion, but also a bit cold and lifeless compared to his, but it has a depth totally unique.
