I admit I have become impatient with my wife in the past when teaching her something, like how to run the garden tractor or how I snow blow the driveway. It took me long enough (too long) to figure out a better way to show her, but this is how we do it now. Part of her job is to document procedures in the hospital, so we've learned that the best way for me to teach her is for her to document the process. It changes my engineering- brain paradigm from "teaching my wife" to "documenting a process". So when she is unclear, it is usually because I am going to fast, using jargon, or skipping steps. But I don't get impatient, because the documentation method keeps me objective. And in the end, she knows how to do something, she has a "manual" of sorts (as do I), *and* more often than not, I realize I can make it easier or safer or better because I'm seeing the process evolve on paper.
Things have sure changed since the last time I was on a fishing boat 50 years ago. We had a depth sounder, a radio direction finder, ship to shore radio, a plotting table, and a cabinet full of charts. In the fog most of all of that gear we did have was pretty much useless. The fog off in the Straits off of Neah Bay is relentless. Clear straight up, but can't see past the bow.
Great episode, whole vid is good, but you might as well just skip to 1:04. Happy birthday Elizabeth !!! Looking good at 29ish 🙄. I vote to have Elizabeth in a bikini all the time, but that's just me. Smooth sailing to you guys. Take care.
I love this channel. I am a native Pacific Northwesterner and have lived near the salt all of my life. I was born and raised in Bremerton, many years ago! And I love Nordhavn trawlers.
Happy Birthday, Elizabeth. What I enjoy most about your channel is the enthusiasm and honesty you show as you discover new places and take on new challenges. Keep it up! I can relate to many of the places you have been in the PNW as I was born and grew up in Victoria, BC.
when i got my new boat i spent days on end docking and more docking till it was a piece of cake, remember the golden rule there is absolutely no substitute for experience but you must be very careful getting that experience, thats when crap happens One more thing when it comes to learning from Sean always remember get him to show you what you need to know not everything he knows. He is way over the average persons intellect when it comes to operating computers and all the electronica equipment associated with that boat
Happy umpteenth Birthday and don't forget to lose count my dear...Congrats on your newly gained maritime knowledge and for the record it could save your lives in times of peril. No place on the vessel for grumpy grumps so take it all in stride and enjoy the time you have together even in such a confined space. Long passages as you know require teamwork and I think youse guys work well together...sooo the "dumb" was just a phase! Thank you for the view and God Bless your travels.
Funny. My wife and I have been married for 31 years and she’s still only 28. Well Happy Birthday young lady health and happiness finds you well. Stay safe and smooth sailing to you both.
Just watching you JUMP into the water, scares me! SOOOO COLD Doing this, learning??? AMAZING gift for yourself. I am pleased. Everyone, captain and mate, should know how to make way! Plot courses! and plan a trip. I love the other videos, but this was such a cool episode... great to see you growing. I've been working with my oldest daughter, helping her understand more, the riles of the road, piloting and of course, driving. She's pretty good in most sea states, and all but single handing our little boat. I am expecting her to be more up to speed each season. Great Loop MAX height: 19'6" Draft: 5ft max, but 4ft draft is best. Otherwise, you are holding your breadth and watching depth sounder carefully. Longest Range is 208 miles, fairly certain MV Freedom can squeak by on that Length... that's a tough one... many marinas cannot do longer than 42, and some planning will need to be done for longer boats. but, technically, 90ft is max (there's one lock that maxes at 90) Beam: less that 18, usually 16. There are plenty of other issues, too, with requirements, but the Loop can be a fun challenge.
Seems like a checklist for start up, laminated, would be a smart way to make sure that all steps are done in order. Have one for at anchor and another for pier side. This is what we had for the boats (submarines) I served on. Made everything mistake proof. We would even have some that were doublechecked by a second person to ensure that they were done correctly if they were critical or could effect safety. Kudos for wanting to learn. In submarine parlance, you are getting qualified!
Congrats to Elizabeth, first mate, for getting the Northavn under way from scratch. Now, you'll be looking out for the unexpected, and checking all the information on the console when Shawn is in control, just like he does, when you are in control, or at the helm. He can now finally relax and chill, knowing you now know how to really have command of the boat. And happy birthday Elizabeth. What a way to celebrate 🍾, by doing something that scares you. Interesting thought. Best wind to you both, stay safe, see you on your next vlog. 😉
It is great that Elizabeth wants to understand the systems and how to get underway. There is no guarantee that one day the captain will for some reason not be able to handle the boat. If Elizabeth doesn’t know, you could be up a creek without a paddle. Occasionally I would tell me Ex to take over so I could (here make something up). And she would have to dock the boat 45’ monohull sailboat, then our 44’ M/Y. After a brief moment of panic she remembered what we had discussed and docked perfectly. Eventually she got where she would take either boat out by herself. Great safety and comfort feature. Your videos are by far, really far, the best.
Happy Birthday Elizabeth!!!! I think it's great that you want to learn how to get the boat underway. What if something happened and someone was seriously hurt? If you were the only one left uninjured onboard you should be able to get the injured to safety. When I was young my father used to take us up to Vermont snowmobiling. Back then the roads weren't as busy and during a storm you might go for miles without seeing another vehicle. If something happened to my dad he wanted me, being the oldest but not yet legal to drive to learn how to drive so I could take the other kids and my father to safety. So more power to ya! It's good to learn how to move your boat any place you need to go! It makes you a much more valuable crew member too! Good Luck and practice, practice, practice!
Another great video. Both halves of a cruising couple should have proficiency in handling and electronics. One never knows if incapacitation of the “captain” will happen, so being prepared should always be the motto. Lastly, if both are proficient it takes the pressure off one person. Happy boating !
Great stuff. I have friends with a 41 footer, they spend their summers cruising the BC/Alaska waters. They have taken the grandkids with them for years. Rule number 1. Every grandchild learns how to operate the boat and all the electronics on it, how to navigate, start the engine you name it. If anything were to happen they want the grandkids to be able to get home safely. Lots of times when one of the kids show up to go cruising, grandpa lets them make up their mind where they want to go and they basically stand back and let the kids do all the work with grandpa just keeping an eye out for any major mistakes. I tried to get him to adopt me but no luck.... Happy belated birthday.
Oh to be 38 again! Here, in Boston, the water is also cold. So, I cringed at the 53 degree jumps you made. Great to learn how to run the boat. My wife loves to dock our boat and can run it too. It makes all the difference when you’re capable, like when the anchor is stuck. Happy Birthday! Love the videos.
I did it with my wife as well but I did it by having her turn on everything she felt she needed and then discussed those that she should have turned on but didn't. It seems to make more sense that way for me. Also, we only had 20% of the switches you have. I think every couple/family should have knowledge on how to hand their home, an emergency is never announced in advance. Well done gang and thanks for taking me along.
Gotta love that 53 degree water! Invigorating! Just pulled docks and because my waders leak anyway I just walked in... A towel, dry clothes and you’re good to go! Happy birthday Elizabeth! Looking forward to seeing you “own” the helm!
Why not create a "spreadsheet checklist" for both scenarios (anchor v. dock startup) that can be used by you and Elizabeth to help walk through the setup? Sounds like it would be a good way to make sure you both are on the same page, AND you can find issues or change process quite easily and keep track of it. Another benefit is when you sell the boat you can hand this off to the new owner as an added/valuable asset to buying YOUR boat over someone else's. Just my 2 cents worth.
This is Tony's first mate who is inspired to get smarter about all that he is learning about how to operate our new boat. I'm also inspired to do scary things! I am working on my scary things list for today and for my 50th birthday in March. I think that one of the lists will include cannon balls in foggy cold water! Thank you for your inspiring video today!
Happy Birthday Elizabeth...I really enjoy your videos, especially since I live in Seattle. I swear I have seen you pass by on my walks on Alki...happy boating.
Happy birthday Elizabeth and thank you for sharing! My admiral has shown interest in learning to master our boat as well... Shawn is a pretty good instructor. I learned a lot too.... mostly how much I want an interactive system on my boat 😝
🎈🎉 *Happy Happy Day Day to Elizabeth!!!* ✨🎁 00:15 ~ hears crash into object 👂 01:19 ~ Shawn if you don't retrieve that from the water... you are way "LESS SMART" than I have been giving you credit for - open your EYES, man... 😏 04:53 ~ I would hate that too, Mr. Sully. 04:57 ~ for like HALF a second you get a blink of his pain hoping he buddies don't watch TH-cam... 😂 05:55 ~ and at least it wasn't a leaf blower or a new washer/dryer... 13:30 ~ do you not have stabilization while at anchor with no engines running? Doesn't that get pretty rocky at times? Thanks again for another great video... It always puts a smile in my Sunday. 👍👍
Excellent video beginning to end. Fun energy you both display. Enjoyed especially Elizabeth’s 10 cannonballs in 53 degree water, and appreciate how good that can make you feel! Not many would jump in, so hat's off too you.
First of all, Happy Birthday Elizabeth!! Glad you asked to learn process of how to turn all all the equipment!! I absolutely enjoyed learning along with you, must be a guy thing! Great job Shawn!!
Good teacher + good student = successful learning. Can’t wait for the video about convincing your spouse to buy a Nordhavn. Make it a great video! A lot depends on it..... no pressure.
It's not only more fun to know what you have to do to run the boat, but a major new level of safety for all concerned. This way you can always take charge of the boats operation if Sean were to get sick or injured. It may just save his life one day!
Great video and a very important subject. We boat as a couple also in the Apostle islands on lake Superior. Best thing is to both know the basics. Be prepared and it makes for a better more enjoyable experience for all. Happy birthday and take care.

I will add birthday wishes! Another present suggestion - “marriage savers” like Eartech Lite headsets so you don’t have to share your communications with any neighbors! Finally - something I forgot to ask or note weeks and weeks ago when Shawn was in the galley and he automatically, with no conscious thought, folded the dish towel into thirds lengthwise and put it over the oven handle. I assume he does that with all towels. Where did that come from? A closet OCD ha it like I have? I ask because we’ve done the same for years and years with all towels. Hi Elizabeth, Happy Birthday!! Don’t let the knowledge snob scare you, it’s more about your fears than anything. You did good challenging yourself and recognizing your choices are the power and means to well being and becoming who you want to be.

Happy Birthday, Elizabeth...looks like you had a splashing good time (sorry, couldn't help it). Thank you both for a great tutorial video...you make a great team! Be well, be safe, happy voyages.
Happy Birthday from Manfred who's 30 plus 43 (never heard that before, I feel so much younger now, lol). Any water temperature below 75, in my book, is called Polar Dipping...would he have gone in after you should you have required help? I got 5 dollars that say "Yes"
Looks like you had a great birthday, Elizabeth! I'm glad your wishes came true. I really enjoyed this video for both the fun and learning aspects. Stay safe and warm
I really enjoyed this video...educational..great job explaining.....I usually watch you at night on Sundays, I enjoyed my Sunday morning video...with coffee
Good idea to put all of the start-up/shut-down procedures on a laminated checklist

Dave T we’ve started documenting as well since Shawn often changes the order in which he does things which made the mental notes confusing 😉

Happy Birthday Elizabeth! My mom after she turned 38, was 38 the rest of her life lol!
#forever29 😉
You're not dumb at all, your journey is one of learning, live your dream you go girl......👍👍

First thing is HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I know zip about running a boat but there is one thing I do know...you are definitely the prettiest first mate!
You jumping into that water gave me goosebumps and I’m laying in bed with a blanket over me😂

Elizabeth - I feel like I have so much energy right now !
Shawn - How you doin? 😉
😂😂😂
When the stabilizers were activated, I was surprised as to their necessity since the water appeared so calm, almost flat.
Into Puget Sound we always have them on since you never know and they really make a huge difference at 7-7.5 knot speeds 👍
Another great video. Both halves of a cruising couple should have proficiency in handling and electronics. One never knows if incapacitation of the “captain” will happen, so being prepared should always be the motto. Lastly, if both are proficient it takes the pressure off one person. Happy boating !

BRAVO to you, Elizabeth, for learning how to operate the boat and her systems!!
Besides adding to the fun, it adds immensely to overall safety.

00:15 ~ hears crash into object 👂
01:19 ~ Shawn if you don't retrieve that from the water... you are way "LESS SMART" than I have been giving you credit for - open your EYES, man... 😏
04:53 ~ I would hate that too, Mr. Sully.
04:57 ~ for like HALF a second you get a blink of his pain hoping he buddies don't watch TH-cam... 😂
05:55 ~ and at least it wasn't a leaf blower or a new washer/dryer...
13:30 ~ do you not have stabilization while at anchor with no engines running? Doesn't that get pretty rocky at times?

Great video! Do more in depth process videos!
Great video and a very important subject. We boat as a couple also in the Apostle islands on lake Superior. Best thing is to both know the basics. Be prepared and it makes for a better more enjoyable experience for all. Happy birthday and take care.
That was a well done teaching moment... communication can be very empowering...and ultimately adds to your shared enjoyment of cruising.
For the person looking for a Great Loops Boat ..... Nordhavn has just introduced the 41 which in my opinion was designed for the Great Loop cruise. You should check it out on their website.
Captain Elizabeth! Go girl!
Great video, very informative. Happy Birthday Elizabeth. Will be watching for at the helm more often now.
Good video and Happy Birthday!. To add to your excellent video, a good habit is to prior to departure, check your reported Lat and Long against the chart. Make sure it is roughly correct and the same with your depth reading. It's also a good practice to check your electronic reported heading with that of your compass every few hours. That why you can be sure your compass is ready if you lose GPS. We lost our gyro on a cutter I was on and it was deceiving, slowly changing the heading which would have run us into the reefs without a regular check against the magnetic compass ( I sailed prior to and during the advent of small vessel chart plotters) Autopilot is nice, we would be two weeks stints on a cutter with no autopilot, so we got pretty darn good with a wheel in a following sea.
It’s a decorator/designer thing or so I’m told... Shawn?
Haha not sure why, but we both do it and don’t like towels drooping too low below the handle.
you got a like out of me when you jumped in that cold water. I live in Mukilteo, so I'm familiar with how chilly that water is, especially on a foggy no sunshine morning. Good job and Happy Birthday.
I love seeing Sully just randomly scamp around in his sweaters. LOL
🐶🐶🐶
In reverse?!?!?!?! Oh! Probably same last words heard on the titanic bridge. Nice vid. Well done.
Hi Elizabeth, Happy Birthday!! Don’t let the knowledge snob scare you, it’s more about your fears than anything. You did good challenging yourself and recognizing your choices are the power and means to well being and becoming who you want to be.
Happy birthday Elizabeth 🎂
The water in Hood Canal off of Port Gamble never gets much above 53 degrees! 29 forever!!
I needed this video to stop being intimidated by our just bought Grand Banks 32. All is learnable and possible. If my hubby gets sick, I have to be able to get my lovely home. Thank you so much.
I am going to be 64 Friday, but am still 29 in my head!!
Happiest Birthday Wishes Elizabeth! May you be blessed with all your heart desires and may all of your dreams come true. Wishing you oceans of love, happiness, peace, and prosperity, as it should be according to the prophecy.
Great video, very informative, always wondered how you started a boat for cruising, Elizabeth, your one crazy and brave lady, the water has to be hot tub hot for me, I'm now looking forward to next weeks instalment.
Nice job Elizabeth
There is also a safety aspect to consider learning how to operate the boat. Nice to know how to use it if the Captain get ill. Happy cruising from Norway :)
Just an FYI the bridge south of Chicago is 19'6" there are other optional canal systems and other things that lower that height. I forget what your draft is but around 4' is as deep as I would go there are some shallow marina's and anchor areas.
Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!
Always good overcoming silly fears-
Were those cannonballs? 🤔
Thanks for sharing.
Life is good~
Happy birthday Elizabeth! A very informative video. The more you practice, the more confidence you will get!
Happy Birthday,, love the Video and Thank you for sharing...
Happy 29th Birthday Elizabeth...maybe get a slightly bigger costume for your 29+ 11 th Birthday next year.....will save you a bit of time editing the "blurring" of the video :-)
