  • Happy Sunday Funday from the US/CA border!
    We love Canada, and we miss Canada, so we're going to Canada! Well, sort of. We're heading north to Blaine, WA to the Peace Arch Historical State Park that lies on the border of US and Canada. The park is divided into two, and people can legally use all of the park without technically crossing any borders.
    Sadly, most of the Canadian portion is closed due to Covid but much of the park is still open for both US and Canadian citizens so we could still wave to Canada and say hello.
    We also (meaning Shawn) do some form-fitting boat work before doing something fun and unique...COFFEE TASTING! We recently heard about a local coffee roastery on Instagram, Hammerhead Coffee, so of course we wanted a farm tour and private tasting. Yes, the BarnYard Coffee Roastery and has none other than...farm animals! Talk about enjoying a cup of Joe!
    Be sure to check out BarnYard Coffee Roasters (a.k.a. Hammerhead Coffee) the next time you're in Blaine!

    I really like your videos, I find them to be super authentic. There are so many Sailing/Boating channels out there now. I think you guys really stand apart (at least in my eyes) for just being completely genuine. There are so many channels out there where the channel is trying to make the Boat. With you guys, the Boat was already made, and if I had to bet, if TH-cam didnt exist, you would be doing the exact same things. In short, I guess I mean you guys do not pander the camera, it feels totally authentic. Fair winds and following seas!

    My husband spent his childhood summers in Whiterock just over the border from Blaine. He and friends used to walk down the railway tracks over the border to Blaine to have ice cream. No one thought anything of it. This was in 1950s and 1960s. Now a days (before COVID) everyone drives through Blaine on their way to somewhere else. Don't let the secret out about what a cute small town it is.

    That was a great outing, interesting that the Peace Arch Park allows citizens of both countries to cross into the area freely. Wouldn't it be nice if all our borders were the same! And Barnyard coffee roasters, what an excellent find! Thanks for sharing.

    Another destination to consider around there is Point Roberts. A tiny sliver of a peninsula across Boundary Bay from Blaine. Still in the USA but very close to Canada. Also hurting for business because of the isolation and closed boarder. Stay safe.

    • @jaquigreenlees
      @jaquigreenlees 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once the border re-opens if you are at Point Roberts, just east and into the mouth of the Nicklemeckle river is the Crescent Beach Marina, a "weekend cottage" community just west of the city of White Rock. They do have a phone in Customs dock and are able to handle boats up to 60 feet in length. The approach is through a fairly narrow channel in the sand banks between Point Roberts and the Peace Arch crossing. The tidal flow is fairly strong in that channel, for best control go inbound during an ebb tide even though it's the high rpm on the engine to make headway.

    I live on Vancouver island.
    While it has been a nice summer with the lack of tourists, it has been pretty hard on the people who rely on tourism for their livelihood's. Lots of people doing "Staycations" but just not the volume like normal. It will be nice when things open back up again.
    I can't remember how many years ago it was, we were camping at a provincial park close to Chilliwack BC. We went out exploring one evening and found the border, we didn't know it at the time. There was one of those cairns set up so the kids and I went to see what it said. At on point we were doing the jumping back and forth from one country to another thing laughing away.
    And then the black helicopter showed up and started to circle overhead.
    Oh crap!
    So we all waved, got back into the minivan and headed back to our camp site.
    When you are allowed to come back across the border and you are in the Comox/Campbell River area, let me know. Would love to take you out for a coffee.

    Totally enjoy all that you share. Thank you. I cannot wait to get to Blaine. My question: if the key issue for winter heat is that warm air comes from up top and creates draft...which I understand...why not deploy a few super quiet "computer" fans in smart places to move cool air and warm air? Would that have been faster, cheaper and less hardcore work...while still using reverse cycle system which works so well in PNW (air temp is sill reasonable and water temp still has heat to offer in reverse cycle, unlike in, say New England in the winter?) Safe travels and thank you for your videos.

    Enjoy your vids and the Q&A on each is a nice way to do it. Looks like you have 2 separate circiuts going into one electrical box and a split receptical. That would mean 2 breakers need to be turned off to disable both outlets. Unless only Shore #1 OR shore #2 can be on at any given time, best practices and many codes (insurance by extension) require these circuits to have the breakers tied together, so if one side trips the other side goes off also. This may not be possible using shore #1 & #2. Solution would be to install a separate receptical.

    Hey guys loving the videos and the Q&A. How often do you guys anchor as apposed to staying in a marina and what's the average cost of staying at marinas where you guys are cruising? Is there a difference in costs as a liveaboard?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ralf Spoddig we have a liveaboard slip in Seattle which is about 25% more than a non liveaboard slip. We have it since we still need a home base right now, but are there about 40% of the time and anchored the rest. In the winter, we spend a bit more time in marinas due to weather but luckily it’s pretty affordable averaging $1/foot per night.

    You can have your leather painted - I know, who knew. I did this to my BMW seats, the guy airbrushed the leather, when he was done the seats looked brand new. Also did the same to a living room chair with the same excellent results. Call local BMW dealerships to see who they use. I am typing this on my newly refitted boat in Comox BC. In my first 20 minutes out on sea trials, the boat hit a log at 20 knots, now I have a leak I have to track down - 28 foot and a snort sedan cruiser, 1969 built in Vancouver. Looks brand new with goodies it never had before - designed so I can be on the hook for a month, no generator and still have enough amps for my style of daily living. Watch out for those logs, especially in BC, so many log booms being towed daily and some escape.

      THAT'S NOT A COKE HAULER IS IT? "SNORT " SEDAN CRUISERS I THOUGHT WERE MORE IN THE GULF WATERS, BUT AGAIN I COULD BE MISTAKEN. (I hope Rick has a sense of humor). AGREE WITH RICK ON DYEING THE LEATHER. CHECK WITH A AUTO UPHOLSTERY SHOP MAYBE THEY CAN SPRAY THEM FOR YOU.

    Thanks and interesting about the grey water disposal and different regulations by countries etc.
    Regarding grey water, do you use utilise marine friendly soaps and/or detergents?
    Thanks and keep up the great videos, cheers

      @mvfreedom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do for our detergent but we haven’t found any dish soaps or shampoos that are marine friendly and actually work.

    • @gordonlewandowski77
      @gordonlewandowski77 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try Dawn dish soap. Marine friendly. It works. We keep ours in a small “ketchup type” plastic squirt bottle and squirt a bit on a “Doobie” when needed. Effective and helps conserve water when we’re cruising (no water maker).

    Did you run the heat AC connection through the galvanic isolator? Running direct AC to the boat is not ABYC compliant to the best of my knowledge.

    Surprised you don’t have either a hydronic or airtronic diesel heat system as well. Ducting is necessary for the forced air and hose runs for the hydronic.

    The border area is monitored by camera and helicopters. But it is also a huge pain for farmers when their cattle cross the border and then have be quarantined due to animal born diseases. Have you guys ever been to Patos Island? It is the northern most US island in the San Juans.

    Awesome Video, Hate that the comments turned it political. I was wondering why you hadn't looked to using diesel heaters onboard if your going to be living on board I would think it would provide a better heating source than electric.

    Hi - I dont have Instagram, so am asking here..... Ian from Germany. Did the first dog die / had to be put down (unfortunatly)? And why did you name the small dog "Mr Sully"?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh so sorry to share that Sandy passed away before Xmas before her 14th birthday. It’s still hard for us which is why we haven’t updated our intro ☹️ And Sully was “Sullivan” when we rescued him, but Sully was cuter. And given his little boss man personality we nicknamed him “Mr Sully!”
