Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.

What part of Mississippi are you from I'm from tupelo in Lee County Mississippi
I'm going to suggest a very old (60's) one from Japan, called Tampopo. It's sort of a foodie movie, but it DID influence Tarantino's performance in Sukiyaki Western Django. It's in color, all subtitles, but very fun and just enough strange to be engaging. The MAIN story is about a widowed woman trying to have the best ramen shop around, and the help she gets accomplishing that, with a couple of odd side stories that pop in and out. It's a comic delight, you might believe Oriental comedy can be rather inscrutable but it's up front and evident with this one.
I never saw "Upgrade" I'll be checking it out soon. Thank you for all the excellent recommendations!
💖ed "Running scared" as well as "Upgrade"
... Oh! Theres an UNDERATED TV show on Max called "Wellington Paranormal" which is done by the same ppl as "What we do in the shadows...." "Wellington Paranormal" really is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! I laughed soo hard w this show. Great watch!
Gahhh, I just canceled my Max/hbo subcrptn after 2 yrs of having it. They really annoyed me after I changed my sub to the $99 w SOME ads, but also changed from the payment from my debit to my credit card (I wanted the money back % on reoccurring charges) and they saved the changes to my subscription, added my credit card, but STILL charged my debit card, gahhhh!!!! And I had other things charged at the same time & of course they refunded it, but it still took a few days to land in my account and I had to rush to the bank to make sure I didnt overdraft.
VERY annoying & they said they werent sure why it did that. I waited to renew to make sure the refund went through, then just too annoyed to renew and now Im not sure I want to, lol, but this video might just convince me I should..... Lol!
THankssss Darren, gonna cost me $99 today ;P Lol!
What you have done with your channel is phenomenal. You now have your own studio and you also designed the artwork on your tshirts. So dope!!
Thank you so much 😀
@@DarrenVanDam You’re welcome!
You’re very inspiring!!!!
Badlands is based on spree killers Charlie Starkweather & Carol-Ann Fugate. Fantastic movie! Going to be checking out a few of these, thank you.
I was just wondering about the tshirts!! They're awesome!!! Esp the Nicolas Cage & Big Lebowski. Will you be selling those in the future??!!
House of Sand and Fog was a real punch in the gut that stays with you - Kingsley is amazing in everything he does. Thanx for this heads up Darren! 👍👍👍
Running scared is one of the most underrated movies I've ever seen. So many genres so many twist and great acting from the whole cast!!
Really appreciate all of your recommendations! Thank you!
What a list- I've seen and love at least half of these and am looking forward to watching (&rewatching) the rest. Great job!
Love the videos man, long time subscriber. You come in clutch with the recommendations 🙌 Love the Saint Nicholas shirt, definitely ordering one
Thank you! I just added "Upgrade" and "Source Code" to my watchlist.
Upgrade and Source Code are my favorites on this list.
Thank you Darren for recommending "Upgrade". I just watched it and was blown away. Awesome movie!
I saw Rubber several years ago and it is a fantastic weird indie flick. The premise sounds dumb, but the way it was made just absolutely works! Great recommendation.
Thank you for your wonderful videos!
Out of the Furnace is criminally underrated. A+ cast
Upgrade is beyond dope! The camera man deserves multiple Oscar’s!
“Out of the furnace” was filmed just a few miles from my house and I remember when they made it. I watched it just because it was made here and it was EXCELLENT!
Love your vids as always, and any reference to Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days get's a like from me. As an aside, I'd love to see a top ten of alien invasion/occupation/dystopia movies, perhaps with some lesser known titles in there! As you ended with your outro, we'll certainly keep watching. Always good for something off the radar to watch.
I think I've seen "The Grey" enough in theaters that they made back their budget. I love it! Liam Neeson gave a seriously underrated and understated performance. He was as tough as his "Taken" character, but with 100x more emotional damage that you just empathize with throughout the film.
Jacki Weaver was the actress nominated for an Oscar for a Best Supporting Role for "Animal Kingdom" in 2011, and two years later she was nominated again for an Oscar for Best Supporting Role for "Silver Linings Playbook". She played Robert DeNiro's wife in that one.
She is a T Rex in Animal Kingdom!
Darren!! Great list as always. Saint Nicholas sweatshirt is on my wish list for my 81st birthday. Congrats to you and Mrs...great job and pleased you had fun creating these gems. Very best wishes from Portland Oregon xxxx
Badlands is based more on Charles Starkweather. Also, when you watch it, you’ll immediately recognize it’s vibe from True Romance, which took directly from Badlands. Absolutely stunning film.
Also, those shirts are killer. Some of the best merch I’ve seen on a channel. Especially love Saint Nicolaus. Might be the first shirt I buy from a TH-camr. Curious how one gets a shirt like that done. I can’t draw, but I’ve got some designs I’d love to have on my shirts.
Anyway, you’re one of my favorite channels and I love your content. Always on point with the movies and always promoting movies that I can get behind. Keep it coming!
RUBBER!!! One of my favorite "undiscovered gems." Great list as always. How do I miss these great films?
"Upgrade" is incredible, definitely underrated. "Rubber" is cinema verite', hahaha! Great list, man.
Darren, I usually agree with a lot of your selections of “hidden gems”, and this list is no exception. Spartan, The Grey, Upgrade and Mud in particular are excellent films. But House of Sand and Fog. OMG - No! I had to digitize that film when I worked on the Nominations Package for the Oscars that year and had to sit through that relentlessly depressing film. It just never let up. I felt like stepping in front of a bus by the time it was over. Sorry. I guess it takes a special person to get through that one.
That being said, I heartily agree with some of your other choices, including Strange Days, Source Code, and The Getaway (although I think the remake is almost as good as the original). Spartan is a movie I can watch over and over again. It’s one of David Mamet’s best pieces of writing, with a terrific cast. And Mud - well, Jeff Nichols has done some excellent films, like Loving and Midnight Special. And as much as I like Mud, to me his best is still Take Shelter. My first exposure to Nichols AND Michael Shannon, it is one of the most eerie and disturbing films I’ve ever seen. Plus it has Jessica Chastain. Highly recommended. Thanks for all you do in recommending lesser known films.
Good choices. I haven’t seen them all, but I agree with ‘House of Sand & Fog’, ‘Out of the Furnace’, ‘Upgrade’ and ‘Strange Days’ (which until recently, I had never realized was a Kathryn Bigelow/James Cameron project.) Some of my other underrated favorites would include ‘The 13th Warrior’ with Antonio Banderas, ‘Serenity’ with Nathan Fillion, ‘Warrior’ with Joel Edgerton, the remake of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ with Jim Caviezel, ‘Deja Vu’ with Denzel Washington, and more recently, ‘The Menu’ with Anya Taylor-Joy.
Great call on 'Out of the Furnace'! Watched it last week and it was surprisingly good.
This list is superb. Well done.
Rubber!! My friends and I used to run a club in high school called the “Bad Movie Club,” where we’d showcase all of our favorite “bad” movies to those who joined. Rubber was one of those movies! Lol
My favorite bad movie of all time is, of course, The Room.
Oh, hi Mark.
Also for those interested, other examples of bad movies we’d show were Troll 2, The Man Who Saved the Earth, Elves, Mac and Me, Samurai Cop, Leprechaun in the Hood, etc.
Looked at all the shirts. Very cool! Starting my Christmas list! Thank you!
So dope that you and the misses made these shirts...Ima have to get one.
THANKS MAN! ALWAYS ON POINT!
Great list. First time watching - subscribed. What are those flame spiral/elongated triangle lights in the background?
looks like a list of bangers darren! upgrade, mud, art of self defense are soooooo shamefully under the radar
I *_loved_*_ Upgrade:_ initially I saw its poster on bus benches. Once I saw it was a Leigh Whannell film, I immediate went to see it on its release.
Appaloosa is supremely rewatchable! I’ve watched it at least 3 times. Open Range would be a very good double feature. Appreciate you, Darren.
Is there a place I can get the shirts in a larger size? Great vids. I love your suggestions. Rubber, Be Kind Rewind and Upgrade are my faves from this list!
Great list as usual!
Great selection Darren 👌🏻
Nice list!!!
Really enjoyed Upgrade.
Thanks for the suggestion Darren
Thanks! Been wanting to see Upgrade
These were surprisingly good recommendations.
Having never heard of you / this channel before & just randomly stumbling upon this. Thanks.
Great video Darren! I did notice the wardrobe change but at the immediate start of the video I knew I needed the Saint Nicolas shirt.
Thank you!👍👍👍
You are getting better and better at this. I have seen about 16 or your 18 proposed flicks. This brought me back to them for an X re-viewing session and the wanting for something new. Great job.
Right on
Great picks here, the ones I haven't seen I'll check out. subbed!
I gotta tell you, almost EVERY video, at least one of your picks is a movie I've seen and loved So I trust your opinion on most of these lists. Upgrade is one and Be Kind Rewind is the other from this one. so thank you for all you do! 🎉🎉
At a friend's birthday party years ago we browsed Netflix and came across the synopsis for _Rubber,_ which we all knew we _had_ to watch immediately.
It is one of the best Mind-Eff movies, particularly it's surreal opening/entrance (with the chairs), where we're then instructed to keep in mind that Nothing Matters...
One of my favourite weird movies, I actually obtained _Rubber_ on DVD, with some great bonus features.
Thanks so much for this list. Would love to see your most underrated non-US medieval films.
Your movie reviews are the best. I only follow your recommendations. Subscribed of course.
I really liked Sourcecode, recently rewatched, still good.
The multiple twists hold up to multiple viewings unusually well for that type of flick.
Thank you for all you do Darren! Upgrade is such a Wild-Ass Ride - Bonkers in the best way. Been on the fence about watching Art of Self Defense since it released - maybe it's time... Ditto for Slow West.
This list and that T-shirt - good stuff mate.
As always, great list here
Slow west is so good. Same with Upgrade. Good list, just wish I hadn't seen all of them.
THANKS
Appaloosa! The book it's based on was actually written by my all time favorite author, crime writer Robert B Parker. He did a small series of Westerns and appaloosa was one of them - the best IMHO. Westerns aren't typically my thing but I read the book because I'm such a Parker fan, then saw the movie because I'm such an Ed Harris fan. Very much did not regret it, the movie was my favorite western since Pale Rider. You've got some great picks on the list, might have to rewatch some of them!
Great list, saved me a ton of time looking for something to watch at 1 in the morning. Going to watch Spartan, never heard of it, until now. Looks like a good flick!
Thanks for the bangers once again
The house of sand and fog is the most depressing movie I have ever watched, but it was a great movie. I've wanted to rewatch it several times, but I can't bring myself to do it 😭
Dude! Great T-shirt designs, just ordered the "Abide" in black. The background really ties it all together if you know what I mean.
Just came across your channel. I can say without a doubt, after seeing your movie list, you have great taste in cinema. Some fantastic flixs in this list.
Wish the shirts didn't have ads for your site on them. Love the designs.
I’ll have to check that out, thanks!
@@DarrenVanDam you get a chance to see "Wellington Paranormal?" Just curious on ur ligit thoughts on it.. U definitely like and recommend all the same movies and shows I tend to enjoy... And my son and I really do like there are people out there that can keep an open mind and enjoy ALL types not limiting ourselves to one genre (ALTHO horror is definitely up there, we are truly "FANS" of the "Film" genre in general)
THANK YOU for being YOU @DarrenVanDam ❗
From ur fellow Atlanta/Georgia area residents Sidney and Serrah! 😊
Running Scared (2006) is a movie that deserves the accolades it never gets. Such a stylistic shot film. It’s clear that New Line/Warner Brothers had no idea how or what to do with it. Paul Walker is incredible in it.
It also has a twist that's in the credits art of all things, really contextualized the whole movie.
I seen running scared in theatres and it blew my mind. That movie had EVERYTHING.
'Strange Days' is one my favorite 90s Sci-Fi flicks. It oozes 90s to an excessive degree, but I don't care. It's still a really cool movie with a fantastic cast. Teenage me was definitely crushing on Angela Basset and Juliette Lewis when I saw this the first time. I've also always had a special place in my heart for Tom Sizemore. He's always that side character with way more gravity and appeal than his few short minutes in the film warrant. Anyway my rule is if they like/love one movie I like/love, then I give their list a try. So thank you for the list. I'll be checking them out.
Lots of stuff I haven't seen here. Thanks!
Holy crap, I love your shirt on this one!!
Be Kind Rewind is one of my favorite movies. I'll watch this list, and keep my eye out for more now that I'm subscribed
I think my first comment here but, I've been watching you for a long time now, subscribed and liked, but never thanked you.
Thanks!
I' m a HUGE movie watcher and you really help[ winnow out the movies I want to watch and don't.
I'll never forget walking out of the theater when I saw the movie Mud. I was completely awestruck. It's still one of the best films I have ever seen and it was the first Matthew McConaughey film I saw that proved to me how amazing of an actor he truly is. It released before Dallas Buyer's club, so from the moment I walked out of that theater I have made it a point to watch all of his films going forward. Such and underrated movie, It can NEVER be recommended enough.
You didn´t see Lone Star or A Time To Kill when they came out? I was convinced of his enormous talent way back then. He just took a break from real work while cashing in on a streak of rom-coms then it was "back to business with Mud and a few other movies the year before. 🙂
@@lokabrazi I haven't seen either of those films. Prior to Mud, I only knew him from Dazed & Confused, romcoms and the dreadful Sahara. Although I had seen Reign of Fire, but it was a pretty forgetful movie other than it having dragons in it. I was only 11 when Reign of Fire came out and only 5 or 6 when the movies you mentioned were released, so I had no understanding or real opinion on what good acting or cinema was. Now that I'm in my 30's, I'll make sure to watch Lonestar & A Time to Kill and I'm sure I'll enjoy them both.
I remember some folks got Out of the Furnace, confused with A Place Beyond the Pines, as they have a similar feel, in the trailers.
Both are dramas, disguised by their trailers as action thrillers, with Out of the Furnace, more of the thriller, with action.
Damn good list running scared is my favorite on the list.
This is like the most useful channel I'm subscribed to.
"Rubber" and "Upgrade" are the only ones on this list that caught my attention. I have added them to my watch list on MAX.
Those new shirts look awesome! Deciding which one to get will be a difficult choice.
Ha! I tried telling her we made too many!
Very cool online shop! But needs more size options.
Running Scared is hands down the most underrated movie on this list.
✨️🤩👍✨️
STRANGE DAYS is SO DAMN GOOD!!! On SO MANY levels. It deserves SO MUCH MORE than it's ever gotten. BRAINSTORM meets MARLOWE. Flat-Out FANTASTIC 🎉
SOURCE CODE is just as clever, with phenomenal performances & an ending WORTHY of its audience. BETTER -- and MORE satisfying -- than ANYTHING Nolan's ever created 😅👍
I read the novel The Getaway not too long ago. Jim Thompson is so good, very underrated. He also wrote The Grifters which was made into an excellent movie starring John Cusack.
With your channel, chapeau bas!
Furnace reminds me of a cormac mccarthy work...gritty, unflinching...with an ominous villain. Terrific movie.
Love the wording of your comment! And Out of the Furnace IS a terrific film! I grew up in a small town on a hill above a steel mill north of Pittsburgh, so this hits home. All the big-name actors in this give killer performances....and I mean killer. This one might make my top ten all time favorites.
Seen 6 of the 20. Great list.
I never even heard of Appaloosa! it looks awesome! Thanks man. it made watching this video more than worth it.
Great list of movies, some absolute belters in there.. But what about Nocturnal Animals, that's such a great film 👍🏼
I’ve only seen Source Code and Mud. Looking forward to check out the other’s you’ve recommended 😊 🎬🍿🕶
Strange Days is an amazing movie! We watch it a couple of times a year. Source Code is a really cool movie that holds up over time. Upgrade rocks.
Be Kind Rewind is a great flick. It's a family favorite of ours. Makes us miss Mos Def. We loved watching him perform in this as well as 16 Blocks, Hitchhiker's Guide, and The Italian Job.
Dwarf wheat wasn’t invented at that time. Dwarf wheat also made a cameo in a Roman period piece.
I've seen quite a few of these and would have to agree so that makes me want to check out the ones i haven't seen yet...thx.
It's always nice to have a few flicks on standby for when you're not sure what you want to watch and looking for something new.
I added so many of these to my what to what next doc. Literally going to watch upgrade tonight it looks super good
Are your shirts available in Australia?
Man, solid list.
Absolutely agree with you in Running Scared, love that movie since it came out, such a great but underrated movie
Art of Self Defense is a masterpiece.
I was working at a video store when "Be Kind Rewind" came out, so I had to watch it for work.
I recommended it to so many ppl when it came out on DVD.
Thanks Darren first time seeing your channel. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 🍁🍂🎃🍂🍁
I love your channel my dude. I was looking for a new style for my beard and I’m digging yours. I’m gonna call it. the Beard DVDam
The Grey was actually filmed outside Smithers, BC, where I grew up, and, man, was it a harsh. unforgiving environment
I have a special shelf for my favorite DVDs all-time and "Mud" and "Out of the Furnace" are on it. Both are great movies! My favorites are generally intense character-driven dramas with little to no CGI, so these two really nail it for my tastes.
Others on this special shelf of mine are Mystic River.....Falling Down....Wind River....Winter's Bone.... Derailed.....American Beauty....Blood Father..... Spotlight....The Hunter..... The Square....Hell or High Water.... Chloe....The Lincoln Lawyer....Lost in the Sun.....Best Man Down....Sicario
Strange Days has been one of my favorite movies since I was a teen, and is still so good, definitely way ahead of it's time, and i think it'll stay relevant as technology gets even more advanced
