    I'm your host, Darren Van Dam!
    Tired of looking for good movies to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services? Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.
    Thanks for watching!

      Saw "Exam" when it first came out, VERY good with a great payoff, it could honestly be a one-act play. DEFINITELY going to watch Under the Silver Lake, The Nines, Resolution, and re-watching Old Boy.

  • @ilshaguides
    @ilshaguides ปีที่แล้ว +97

    Honestly, the production value of *Coherence* I felt actually _helped_ the film. Because of the low-budget look, it makes you feel a bit more attached to the characters. You feel a bit more localized & present _with_ the events rather than just watching them.

    • @tonybarnes2920
      @tonybarnes2920 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah, Coherence really surprised me. The way everyone talks over each other is very "real" (because the majority of the film is improvised). There's an unease to it that just works.

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tonybarnes2920 I haven't seen this one, but I've seen a few other films that do that sort of thing - the intimate and somewhat chaotic production is generally done specifically to create this effect. I mean, even a decade ago (I believe this one was from 2012) anyone with a couple credit cards and a decent PC could pull off a _very_ high level of polish if they had the willingness to do so. When a serious team *doesn't* , it's usually deliberate.

    COHERENCE is a must see.I felt totallyexhilirated when it ended. Definitely deserves a rewatch. The low-budget video camera approach actually makes it easier to believe this could actually happen to you: It's just some neighbor's home movies.

    • @existentialcwboy
      @existentialcwboy 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      *SPOILER WARNING* Coherence was an excellent film. I may be misremembering the ending but from what I remember there was one thing I couldn’t figure out:
      in the final scene the blonde chick (forgive me it’s been years so I can’t recall the characters’ names) awakens the next morning in a parallel universe, which resembled her original universe but also was closer to what she wanted in her original universe and kills her parallel self to take her place, right?
      So What did she do with the body of her parallel self that she murdered? As I remember it the body was someplace it would easily have been discovered and she could’ve been found out right?
      Again, it’s been years since I saw it but I just remember that one last detail kind of irking me because it felt like a loose end in an otherwise, amazing film. I don’t know how I just stumbled upon it one night, but I am going to watch it again after seeing your comment. Thanks.

      @existentialcwboy she found her parallel self knocked her unconscious, eventually she wakes up and tries to run then getting knocked out again and put in the trunk of her car. She then takes over her life and pretends she belongs in this universe, later that night her boyfriend gets a call from her parallel self and the movie cuts to black with her boyfriend finding out the truth.

      I felt like the way the characters reacted to the events was unrealistic and broke my immersion. Ruined the movie for me.

  • @Stigggs

    Thanks for the great video and recommendations. COHERENCE and TIME CRIMES are my two favorites on the list. If a person has even the slightest awareness of things like quantum mechanics, Schrödinger's Cat, and parallel universes, then these two films are outstanding. The production values were actually just fine in both, the acting was more than appropriate - the actors sold the stories. The stories were completely original and ingenious. Loved them both. My runners-up are OLD BOY. and Mulholland Drive.

    Wow Darren! Another "Banger" of a list! You are by far a master of your recommendations/reviews craft and I have seen every..single..one of these awesome gems! Finally saw Infinity Pool last weekend on Hulu and loved it and was on par with Possessor for me (wish your list was 14 instead of 13 lol). Really respect your placements and 1000% agree with Mulholland Drive being #1 (Lost Highway is a close 2nd). Keep up the awesome work, my guy and can't wait for your next video!

    A documentary that stuck with me for weeks was Tell Me Who I Am (Netflix). It's quiet, with a very disturbing theme but doesn't have explicit violence, gore etc. The central question of the film bounced around in my head for a long time. I still don't know where I stand on what the right thing would have been.

    Side-note on Coherence: it's a movie that's largely improvised, beside just being "low budget". It gives it an interesting / manic feel, with people talking over each other, that I like. Great list. I've watched them all repeatedly, except Under the Silver Lake and The Nines. Thanks for the recommend... but that's why I sub!

  • @OloorinOfTheSouth
    @OloorinOfTheSouth ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That was a great list man, genuinely surprised and thrilled to see a David Lynch film take the #1 spot. Wild At Heart is pretty much my all-time favourite, but Mulholland Drive is a pretty close 2nd/3rd. Tidbit of trivia you might like about it - still have it on DVD, and there's this cool thing they intentionally did where they took away the ability to fast forward through the film, there's no chapters, you have to watch it in order straight through from start to finish. And on the inside cover, instead of chapter titles (as there are none) there's numbered clues instead to help you piece together what's going on. Definitely the most digestible, or most accessible of Lynch's films, and most profound, despite maybe being more confusing than some of his others.

    • @gatekeeperboxing5898
      @gatekeeperboxing5898 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not a fan of Lych but I can see why some people like his films i've seen Mulholland Drive a few times mainly to see if I had a higher opinion on rewatches and to get why other people rate it so highly, but it has failed to catch fire with me. I just can't get past alot of the weirdness to be able to enjoy the main plot of the film which is good but the rest makes it pretty unlikeable for me and not a film I will ever watch again. I've seen Blue Velvet once or twice and I enjoyed that one slightly more and saw Wild at Heart aswell. I generally try to avoid David Lynch movies, along with other Directors such as David Cronenberg, Wim Wenders, Lars Von Trier as I find all of their output mostly unwatchable for me.

  • @saltydog7038
    @saltydog7038 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The Nines is a really really good look at the relationships between creators and their creations. A writer and his characters, an actor and his roles a program and the games he designs and of course God and man symbolically. I remember before Deadpool when everybody was down on Ryan Reynolds for crap like Van Wilder and The Proposal I always cited it as showing his range and ability. It is from the writer of Go! which is an all time favorite movie of mine.

    One of your best lists! I've seen most of them! Nine of them, in fact :) just goes to prove that I love weird movies. Out of your list, Coherence, Resolution, and Primer are the best for me. I'm about to watch Mulholland Drive in a bit. :D Others that didn't make your list (that I love) are:
    Circle, Predestination, Donnie Darko, Triangle, Under The Skin (Johanssen), Endless (same universe as Resolution), Enemy (Gyllenhaal)
    That's just at the top of my head. :)

      Enemy and Under the skin are amazing!!! and Mulhollland Drive… well what can I say about the best film by the great David Lynch! I mean, his films are so bizarre and dreamy! ❤ I hope you liked it. It is not for everyone. But I think Lynch is so intelligent and unique. His work is amazing! There is nobody out there to compare him to. Absolutely superb!

    Thanks for the recommendations. For Coherence, I, like many others here, really liked it. As one person commented, the way in which it was made gave it a "You are Here" feel. I'll put in my suggestion, too: Memento with Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano,. Another Christopher Nolan flick.

    I'm so glad Mulholland Drive made the #1 pick I've seen it a dozen times and it never gets old - always something else to notice. Coherence is just a masterpiece the shaky camera work makes it feel like you're in the room with everyone filming it on your phone. Seen it three times and the story is masterfully subtle right from the opening frames not a single shot or line is wasted. Pay attention.

    Good list, but you laid it on pretty thick about Coherence's production values; they really don't take anything away from the film. Early on it develops a "found footage" vibe that breaks the Fourth Wall. For those not burdened by the "Auteur's eye", you'll enjoy it, and it will definitely get you thinking!

    I saw The Endless before Resolution and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Resolution. The Endless is way up there for me as far as the genre goes. Coherence is also a fun one.

    Love Coherence and Tumbbad. Will Farrell was great in Stanger Than Fiction, and when I first saw it, I honestly thought it was going to change his career on a more Robin Williams like path. Time Crimes is awesome, but Primer was so thought provoking, that I don't think I could honestly ever recommend it as part of a double feature because it's all you'd be able to think about.

    Good list, I've seen many of them. Primer is, without question, the best time travel film ever made. I have seen it countless times, very thought provoking. The score is also incredible, Shane Carruth is a supreme talent. Apparently he's had serious legal troubles and is out of the business. A real shame. Resolution is great, and there's a great tie-in to the later Moorhead/Benson film, The Endless. Coherence is sufficiently weird and is definitely worth a watch.

      I first saw Primer over a decade ago, and I periodically re-watch it. Part of the appeal to me is sort of nostalgic; I spent much of my career in 80's - 00's tech in the Bay Area (what I now refer to as "Silicon Valley 1.0", a very different place than it is now) and all the characters in the movie are very familiar to me. Sometimes from looking in the mirror. Never did accidentally stumble on time travel, however... 😋

    Mulholland Drive is the type of movie that leaves you with many questions after first viewing...because you definitely want to watch it again to pick up on the stuff you couldnt quite put into context the 1st time. Oldboy is disturbing... and a great movie.

      David Lynch’s movies are not supposed to make sense. The nature of his films is always based on a dream like state. That is what Lynch himself has said. Dreams usually don’t make that much sense, if you think about it. They are bizarre and kinda unsettling at times. Don’t watch his movies focusing on understanding them or getting real answers. just embrace the experience and enjoy the ride. That is why David Lynch is one of the greatest directors of art house films. At least in my opinion😊

    Holy hell! You mentioned “Time Crimes”! Finally!
    I’ve been watching and waiting for you to mention this movie, since I first started seeing your lists of obscure, overlooked, unknown movies…..how many years ago, now? I knew that you would eventually give it some love. (Based solely on many others that you’ve recommended.)
    And, maybe you’ve already mentioned it before, in some other list. Totally possible. But, if so, I’ve not seen it. And that makes THIS one, the first time that you’ve mentioned it! (In my world, that is!)
    This movie is really awesome! Plus, it’s a bit of a mind-bender, for sure. Anything BUT cut-and-dry easy to figure out! Very well done, especially for its meagre budget.

    Thanks so much, for including “Coherence” in this list!
    It’s an absolutely underrated film, in my opinion. It’s also one that I recommend, frequently. At least, to those who I think will appreciate it, anyway. (I understand that not movies are for everyone, for sure!)
    I think that practically everything about this movie, just WORKS. The production values included. But, the casting, the performances, the sets, the storyline and the writing, everything is done very well.
    Plus, the ending is amazing! And, it’s one of those that some people will get, immediately. But, quite a lot of us will not get it, quite so quickly. Once it hits you though…..wow!
    Just an awesome movie!
