    I remember reading up on this that they originally thought the NA and the Pelican were two distinct Nebula, but the reality is, it's all one massive complex of nebulosity, and the "space" they thought separated the two, was actually just dark nebulosity within the singular complex. But how fortunate, as without that dark nebulosity, it would just be a massive, but indistinct nebula, instead of two, very iconic ones.

    That's crazy cool info, Joe. I always thought they were separated and never even considered it was a darker nebula sitting in front of them. Awesome pic!

    Hi Joe! Great insight on this nebula. Completely ignored this area when I imaged the Cygnus Wall a few years ago so it was a real eye-opener when you walked through your explanation. Super cool processing to bring it to the forefront. APOD worthy!!

    Dark nebula against bright emission nebula are my favorite DSO's. The Pacman nebula was the "ah ha!" moment for me.. realizing the dark areas were not empty space. Great final image! :)

    Before I watch the video… I must say that the dark thing in between the NA and Pelican nebulae is a dark nebula. Not many show this feature in their pictures of the region.

    Great image! Thanks. I'd seen the LDN designation before, but it never really clicked as to what it meant. It's pretty obvious from your image that it's dust sitting between us and the nebulae (or maybe it should be nebula, as it would appear the NA and Pelican are really just one huge nebula with a dust cloud obscuring a central part from our point of view).

    • @JoesAstrophoto
      @JoesAstrophoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dave! I guess it is just one big nebula as you say. Just hard to think of it that way after thinking it was two all this time. At least I thought it was two until now.

    That area was also one of my first images. I had done Andromeda and thought I'd try it out. I was using my Lumix G9 and a 50-200 lens on a Star Adventurer. I couldn't see any nebulosity at all in single subs... so it was really more of a "point and pray". At that time, I thought they were two separate nebulae with empty space between them.
    It wasn't until I hit that area again with my 294MM / GT81 and SHO filters that I really saw it for what it was. The image I took is one of my monitor's wallpaper. The Soul is on my other monitor.

    Hi Joe,
    VERY interesting. It brings back memories of my early days of meteorology with the advent of weather satellites. At first, we were amazed at seeing the clouds from above. But there were certain images that were confusing and I didn't know what I was looking at. "If only I could animate it"... that would help a lot and change the perspective of what I was seeing. The same goes here ... if only we could animate the view. I am sure you would see that dark area move as a low unilluminated area of dust obscuring the brightly lit gasses behind it. As Spock would say, "Fascinating"

    • @JoesAstrophoto
      @JoesAstrophoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Pat! Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could do that or see it up close enough to see it happening? “It’s only logical”

  • @thecampingastronomer8554

    Great detail in the dark nebula! Without that dust, there just wouldn't be Pelican. This would be a much less interesting piece of space to image without that dust. (I'm on a bit of a dust binge in Cepheus and Taurus at the moment, lol)

    Stunning image Joe! Really love your image processing, the colours pop just enough but you never take them too far.
    I never knew there was a dark nebula in between, definitely just assumed it was empty space. You’ve inspired me to reshoot the target and try to bring it out the same way you achieved.
    Wanted also get your thoughts on mono ZWO cameras. I’m currently using a one shot colour camera, the 294MC pro and have been debating switching over to mono for a while now. I know you mentioned that you use the 2600mm but also the 294mm pro. I was also looking at the latter option but wanted to see what you thought of it vs the 2600?

    • @JoesAstrophoto
      @JoesAstrophoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Jon! I love both cameras, but the 2600MM is the better camera. It just picks up more details in my opinion. That being said however, I find the 294MM to give me sharper images when I use it with my EdgeHD because the pixel scale is a much better match. The 294MM can also be unlocked into bin1 mode and works really well for lower focal lengths. I find myself still using the 2600 with my z81 reduced to 447mm but I do need to drizzle the data. The other thing to consider is cost. The 294 is much less expensive and you can get away using smaller filters as well. Hope that helps, you won’t really be disappointed with either camera.
