As a Maine resident, it's always cool to see what other people think is cold. I hear "cold weather" and I immediately assume below zero, it's a neat little cultural thing. Nice ride, love those older Detroit Diesels.
I wish the EPA would just Eff off. Sweet truck man! I was sat in traffic behind an old coach bus with a 671 Detroit and could have sat there all day listening to it.
the inline 671 is my favorite. by far. I've even considered getting an old GM bus/RV conversion rather than a conventional RV just to get a good old 671. It's silly but it's my life,. lol.
You are spot on sir. Exactly how i start it. Crank it and slowly roll the fuel to it with the cable stop. Also seems to fire better if i stop cranking, wait a second, then crank again like i do in this video. If i sit there cranking and cranking letting it pour smoke it wont even attempt to start...ever!
Nice truck!! I had a 4-53 in a Suburban and it would NOT start below 35 degrees. I didn't employ the ether bunny; I preheated it when cold weather was forecast..
I had the same starting problem with my 6V53 in a F350. I would do like your saying crank then wait 10 seconds and fire right up. It worked fine above 0c when I use it everyday, but I got tired of it and just put an ether injection system that sprays directly into the blower with a switch in the dash, now in the cold it starts every time no problem.
mine isn't turbo. thats a real nice truck. If I didn't need my tractor (model 1950 Cockshutt) for snow plowing I would find a truck to build. I could only hope to do half as good a job as you did. My son does have a 98 chev with blown engine and lift kit that I would like to put the 354.6 perkins in that I have in a combine. Maybe some day.
oh hell eather dont hurt em if you only use a little at a time and not often. i have diesels that we use starting fluid on all the time when it gets cold and have had no trouble at all. even used it to run a moter till it picked up fuel to run on its own and is still running today just fine.
sounds like the 4th cyl fired at 1:42. If it fires and runs on 3 cyl, shut it down and restart it and it'll fire up on all 4. works everytime with my 453 in cold weather.
mine is the same way, crank till blue in the face with not much action. I can crank for a fraction of the time then wait a couple seconds and it'll crank and fire up nearly immediately.
I've got a 79 K10 Chevy i'd LOVE to have a 453 and a manual. I love the SBC 350 and all but.. c'mon.. few things make a nicer mechanical noise than a 2-stroke Detroit.
@John Nicodemus What nonsense... the Achates power engines is basically this engine with two blocks facing each other and no head.... its the one of the most efficient and clean diesels ever designed.... as well as being extremely simple. Now these old detroits aren't quite as efficient but they aren't' terrible either. They dont' have variable injection so idle sloppy but when pulling a load down the road they are pretty efficient and clean.
mine starts a bit better than that with no start aid. make sure to check the fuel modulator setting. I had mine set to smoke a bit but that extra fuel/timing was murder on the cold start performance. I put a cummins grid heater on the blower inlet and it makes a world of difference. it'll start at -10c no problem.
Do you still have this truck I'd love to see this truck with a boss xvt setup on the front of it not much would be able to stop it I'm from mass to ill be looking for you I gotta see this thing awesome truck well done
What is wrong with that motor? it should start better than that at 30 degrees. My 4-53 starts at -20c better than that, without either or plugged in. it has N60 injectors. this motor was new in '65 and has about 6000 hours on it and had one complete overhaul about 20 years ago. I regularly plow snow when its -40 plugged in it will start in about 10 revolutions. I've only used either once or twice when i've had to plow and tractor wasn't plugged in.
Is yours turbo or natural? Turbo models have much lower compression than natural models, therefor start harder in the cold. Also my engine has no fuel modulator, combined with the N60 injectors, so it really soaks it in fuel when cranking. Seen many other 453T models that start the exact same way as mine. Would love to see a video of yours starting sometime in the cold, thanks for the comment.
No glow plugs and they sure hate the cold. Turbo models like mine have lower compression ratios (17:1). Non turbo models are up around 21:1 which makes it a little easier cold starting.
I'm guessing that n60 injectors are quite high capacity, and that the fuel they inject into a cold engine drops the temperature in the combustion chamber, preventing ignition?
ah, that'll make it harder to start. Cable shutdown? cranking with no fuel and partially pushing the cable may help. grid heater is pretty easy to retrofit as long as you know someone who can AL weld.

I found your videos 5+ years ago.
This is still my most favorite truck on the planet.

When you wait in between cranking time the cylinders build heat

God knows I love that engine!!
This is one of the best builds I have had the privilege to stumble upon in TUBE LAND. GOOD JOB
Needs a block heater for the cold winter days...beautiful truck tho
A grid heater would probably work too. Not sure if it's doable on a 453 but i've seen some diesel tractors with them that seem to work out well.
I had the same starting problem with my 6V53 in a F350. I would do like your saying crank then wait 10 seconds and fire right up. Do you have any videos of that truck?
At low RPMs it sounds like a Cummins 495.
ive never heard a screaming jimmy idle as low as that
Good strong batt's and a real nice deep Detroit knock= pure Music
Nice video gotta love the old Detroit
Love the cold start with the stack cap.
Like how the flap on the exhaust quits dinging as each cylinder lites up
Nice truck!!! Sounds great. I'd like to see you take it down the road a bit.
My motor has no fuel modulator. It was missing when i bought it. Grid heater may be something to think about.

AL M Must be a Massey Ferguson combine then, right?
Ha! ...air compressor pump at 2:59... rebuilt a couple myself....Nice truck sir!!
It has a block heater and an oil pan heater. Just didnt have them plugged in that night. Its always plugged in once the cold weather really arrives.

Nice truck love the 453t Detroit diesel
What a beautiful machine.
I like the old school slotts. Don't know how much plowing you plan on doing but some type of block heater might be a good idea.
And the engine started without 5 cans of ether to boot.🤔😉
If a diesel ever needs assistant starting it's better to use WD-40 rather than starting fluid
+1 exactly, Starting fluid is meth for diesels and they become addicted
ether?
Jthumper sorry thats a old truckers tale engines dont have a mind.

works everytime with my 453 in cold weather.
one of the best starts!
God damn, that thing would never start in Canada
Jonathan Morley just needs a block heater. She'd be just fine.
We had -30 one day
Trudeau could suck start it.
Have you ever seen zipties n bias plies
Joseph Stalin oh fuck yeah! He could start anything as long as he's got the Cosby in a can.

I didnt know you were selling it. I just saw the ad on craigslist.
They don't make them like that anymore

Total eargasm! Badass!
I'll give my my 7.3 in a heartbeat
Yea anything below 30 might as well be below zero when starting this thing. It hates the cold.
It was telling me that it wasnt charging. The engine hadnt spun fast enough to excit the alternator.
Where'd you get the cool Detroit 53 decals? I'm looking for a pair for my '41 Dodge COE project.
sounds great
up in smoke !! nice vid
I was wishing for a plow this weeend!
If interested, I would like to meet up and see this beautiful beast! I am in the Fall River area.
great video. Nice cranking :)
He got it staated, then it was full of smoak in hea 🤣🤣🤣🤣

how much did this build cost

Great engine. How does it hook up to the existing power-train ? Love the sound.
Can you start it and show us what you're doing on the inside? Hitting the throttle at all?

Better than pushing a ford
Does yours start like mine in cold weather? I think the N60's make some of the hard starting for me. Anything under 40 degrees, shes fightin ya.
I'm guessing that n60 injectors are quite high capacity, and that the fuel they inject into a cold engine drops the temperature in the combustion chamber, preventing ignition?
That's really impressive considering Detroits don't have glowplugs or a grid heater.
I think i got them on ebay?...Someplace in austrailia had them and shipped them.
Yea Bourne, Ma
She started but she ain’t happy
why don't these guys use aero start instead of wearing out the starter
Love the stack setup, what size exhaust?
4 inch
@@josh216882000 Sounds great. Do you still have the truck. What made you swap In the 10 speed?
Nope no throttle. Detroit governors hold the throttle wide open on their own until then engine starts.

I sure do!
That is the two stroke Detroit diesel right
anthony hayes yes
What transmission you got in that that your running a transfer case with?
10 speed roadranger. Has a np205 divorced t-case.
And i thought a Cummins sounded awesome!!
I was just curious, what transmission do you have?
He's got an overdrive Clark 5-speed in it.
I would do anything for that truck
what was the motor in originally?
1979 chevy c60
