We are learning from our first flock. All 6 have been together since hatching last July. We had no problems until the Buff Orphington, Peaches, got pasty butt about a month and a half ago. The white rock, Willow, began bullying her to the point of blood being drawn. I took Peaches out for a couple weeks to heal, but when I put her back, Willow was at it again. After some observation, it was apparent the other chickens followed Willow's lead, so I sent her to "Chicken Jail" for a week, keeping her in a carrier inside the hen house at night. During that time, Peaches was not harassed in any way. Willow returned and immediately started bullying again. Back to jail another 10 days and now back in the flock, but now at the bottom rank in Chicken World where she's getting a bit of her own medicine, but not nearly as vicious. Her temperament towards this human rooster is a complete turnaround too. No longer does she peck at my hand when I pet her, or squawk loudly when picked up. Today, she surprised me by flying to my shoulder where she sat until it was sore (open shoulder shirt), then snuggled in my arms while I pet her head. Rehab seems to have worked.
Excellent. My one rooster I just hold him. Now...he comes in the house where the gods live. THE FOOD GODS. Inside he gets yogurt and is very amicable. Of course now the girls are bored with him.
Years ago, my husband had a bully rooster. Only problem was, he mainly bullied me. I was newly married and not familiar with chickens. Only at KFC. He especially liked to wait until he cornered me in an outbuilding and look through the cracks at me with his beady little eyes. Then I would scream for my husband who would calmly come to my rescue. Thirty six years later, I raise chickens and love it!
ALL animals are so smart , if they decide you are a good fun toy, YOUR IT, my horse knew i was afraid of her in an open space. she would run at me and stop quick. i was scared she would slip and 1200 lbs smash 110lbs .. i would make her go in barn before i would feed het. one day she was eating in the barn i said she wont leave her food to tease me............ my back to the barn barn door i was moving horse poops. i felt the slightest touch on my shoulder, i turned, she reared up , scared the hell out of me, ran around laughing, went back in the barn to her food. how she came out of that wood floor barn without a sound? i did not know a horse could top toe ha ha
Last summer one of my hens, BB (big bertha) began to bully another hen, Brownie, who has pendulous crop. And she REALLY attacked her a few times, clearly wanting to kill her. So I did all of the things you mentioned. One after the other trying to find a way to change her behavior, all the while dealing with the poor girl with the sagging crop. I even tried those horrible blinders you attach through their nares so she cannot see in front of her. Well, she didn't let that stop her. It also prompted Sue Ellen to join in. Unacceptable. Sue Ellen is usually a very good girl, but she sure is influenced by BB. Since the two of them got along well, mostly because Sue Ellen is such a follower, they became the "Bad Girls", and I had to permanently separate the Bad Girls from Brownie and Runny, who get along famously.... the "Good Girls". (I never call them that so they can hear). That meant I had to build another coop for the Good Girls and make sure the run was fenced off from the Bad Girls. This has worked out best so far. Unfortunately, Brownie's pendulous crop is an issue, but using a crop bra, which she removes when she can, helps a lot. So there is the saga of The Good Girls and Bad Girls.

If you exhaust all options in dealing with a bully hen and she continues making other hens’ lives miserable I’m afraid that the only solution by then is to put her in a soup. I know that sounds cruel but you need to get the bully hen out of the flock before she seriously injures other hens. Even if she doesn’t injure other hens she will not stop making the lives of other hens miserable for as long as she lives. Some hens are simply not meant to be in a flock and in my opinion it’s much more cruel to allow your hens to live in pain and terror than it is to put one hen out of her misery.
Thx for the tips! I have a chicken from hell thats at the top of the pecking order. She has literally ripped out and bit off over 150 feathers in 4 days from my favorite chicken. Last night I contacted someone that may take her for their flock. I feel super sad about this bcuz one on one my evil chicken is sweet and she’s a terrific layer. I’ve given her a year worth of chances and separated her many, many times in my basement over that year. When I put her back out, she takes her place at the top of the order again. Today I’ll try the method you shared by putting her in my dog crate in the run with the others.
It’s hard when they are sweet but just crazy with the pecking order. I hope this works. Sometimes, it’s best to find a new home for them where they can completely start over. I hope that’s not the case! 🐔❤️
Loved the video, my rooster is bullying one of my hens who was injured, from my chihuahua, I kept her in the house for 2 weeks tending the cut. And when I reintroduced her in my brooder then the coop, he started on her again. He wont let her out of the coop. I put him in a small pen within the run for a week or so and then tried again and his bullying didnt stop. At my wits end, I may give them all chamomile, lol
Ugh I’m sorry that’s happening! Roosters are a whole other thing. 😖 You could try removing him completely to where he doesn’t see the flock for a week or two and see if that helps. But it really depends on the rooster’s personality. I hope he changes his ways!

Omg. 2:30 in and I just realized WHY my new Angry Karen is so food/water aggressive & protective and complains loudly ALL the time! I got a hen from my niece’s flock to keep mine company when I had to send my roo out to her place to be a Pasture Prince. This girl is so sweet to me but she bully’s my lone hen that needed company. 1st time I picked Angry Karen up I was kinda shocked at how skinny she is… not sure what her pecking order was before, but I’m betting she wasn’t on top. She understands now what ‘i’ma put you night/night if you be mean’ means as cage time and has calmed down a LOT 2 weeks in. They do understand simple commands and are trainable for sure!
I only have 3 hens and no roosters. They are all Barnvelders, all hatched April 19, 2022. One has always been a bit smaller than the other two. And I had always thought the larger hens sort of edged the smaller one out of feed, water etc. I just noticed this week that the smaller one is probably getting pecked, because it appears that feathers on her neck have been broken off and that her comb looks a bit pecked at, and I have thought one of them has been molting, probably the small one. I have listened to several TH-cams and I don't think she's sick. I thought I'd given them enough protein, but maybe not, so I will give them more protein and also try to let them out into a playpen more often because maybe they're bored. I don't free range. There are hawks sometimes, and we just have a coop that's rated for 3 chickens, in a southern CA backyard. I appreciate your videos, thank you.

Those flower remedies work! We used them to help curb the grief when my mom died. (For us, not the birds...lol) It calms you! I'll remember that for the birds. They do have such personalities! I have one that gets jealous easily. I said , "Look, your sister is finally laying!" and showed her the egg and she looked right at me and then pinched the skin on my arm. LoL.
Just a couple of hours in, Chickie Jail, brought Lilac down some notches from pulling feathers. We left Chickie Jail in place closed up where they can see it.
Dahlia, what would you do if it's a rooster being the bully? It's Spring, it's mating season. But I also know, he has a difficult time eating. He has a very long waddle. When he bends to eat, that waddle gets in the way and he steps on it. So by the time he's gotten out from under himself, another hen has already taken his food. He'll eat a little from my hand, but the girls see that I'm feeding from the hand, and they come to and my rooster departs when he sees all the girls coming. I feel because he may not be eating as much, he's jumps each one of the 13 girls like three or four times a day. When the girls run from him, he chases them, he plucks their neck feathers or even their combs. I've tried feeding him alone, but then he won't eat if he's separated from his girls. What would you recommend? Please help!!! A wreck, in Texas.😬
Is he acting normal? If he’s running around and mating and acting normal then he’s likely getting enough food. Roosters will let the hens eat first, usually. His other behavior sounds like common rooster behavior. They can be pretty relentless! You might consider getting a few more hens. :)
Back in the 90’s I took a coarse in using Bach Flower Remedy in my medical based massage therapy office. I don’t have to tell you just how beneficial they were in many treatments. A running joke in the office was that we all agreed that over 80% of the people could benefit from Holly Essence. Now retired and a chicken owner, I am faced with a bully chicken. Pac-Man looks it's infuriated easily 😃 I too face same problem with my hens. They are friendly with each other in cage when their stomach is full. Or else, the big cage turns into a bullying zone. Lack of food actually makes them stressed which inturn makes them angry. The same case is with roosters.
I did the two separation methods but my bully just got angrier and started attacking once reintroduced. She even attacked me. She also ruined another flock mate who also started defeathering other birds. They seem to be doing well at another barn nearby. Finally convinced my hubs that we need more room because I don’t have space to give them much enrichment. Once we get more space, I will be back to six birds. The flock is much calmer without the two bullies.
Our bully was 2nd in the pecking order and really wanted to be 1st so she would be so rude to everyone especially new comers...we put her on a dog crate inside the run for a couple days with her own food and water...she came out knocked down a peg. 😅

She has an amazing personality that is unique to her, just like my 6 other girls. I did the time out, and boy did it work. I’m so so happy because she’s amazing. I have given mine that, milk and water kefir grains and vinegar mothers. They eat them all. I have no problems with my chickens at all. They’re very happy!

Great video, I’m a little worried about my hen becoming more of a problem eventually but I believe when we integrate the new girls it will shuffle the pecking order and change it. Also Wren thinks your chickens look big and scary!

If they are really not getting along you might need to separate them again and wait until the younger ones get a little bit bigger. Then start the process of integration again.
I have a bully hen who was my favorite. She bullies everyone. She does not want to be a mother and brood on eggs. She even placed her own eggs under another hen who is raising them as her own. It is amazing the personalities chickens have. Who knew? !!
Aloha from Hawaii 🌺 I’m fairly new at raising chickens, so I’d like to get your opinion on something … I started with two chicks from a local pet shop, then decided I definitely wanted more of these sweet and amazing creatures, so two weeks later I got nine more chicks. The first two chicks have graduated from the brooder to the coup (they’re currently 8 weeks old) … which means the 9 chicks in the other brooder are 6 weeks old. Since it’s warmer here in Hawaii, and the 9 chicks in the brooder are already bored with limited space to move around, I was thinking about moving them outside to the coup earlier than 8 weeks … these nine chicks have been raised separately from the first two chicks that are two weeks older … how much more time should I give the 9 chicks that are two weeks younger, before moving them to the coup with the two chicks that are two weeks older ? I want to be sure I do this the best and safest way 😊 Thank-you for your kind reply, Darlene

I have a bantam that was the rule of the roost.. Now she's broody and is on the bottom of the pecking order.. The two she bullied is now bulling her.. Karma right... But I was wondering about separating them from the flock like you suggested... Maybe then my bantam will come out and chill... I don't want to get rid of any of them... I have a lady who came to me with missing feathers. I didn’t think anything of it other than that she might be molting… the feathers have never grown back and I now realize that it is because my one chicken is literally eating her feathers and now another one’s as well. There may be one other culprit as well but she’s not the worst. I have a large rabbit cage that I’ve used to isolate in the past but I’m not sure if it’s enough room when a chicken isn’t injured?

I had a chicken that looked a lot like pac man and his name was Dailey because we thought he was a she so we had to get rid of of daisy it was really really sad because we couldn’t keep him where we live
I bought 4 chicks from a local guy. 3 of 4 ended up being roos and since I live in the city I had to get rid of them. So I kept one and got 2 more from the same guy. That integration was fine. Next day I got 3 more from a flock that has a severe pecking issue. I realized a few days in That they must be pecking at night in the coop. My problem is I think it is all 3 and the 3 I already had seem super docile. So I built a 2nd coop for night time. They free range in a medium sized city back yard all day and only get locked up at night to sleep. I'm hoping this helps put an end to it. I am also going to buy some anti pecking spray in hopes that helps too.
Do you trim the crest feathers on your polish hens? I'm new to chickens, made a small (6) mixed flock in my backyard. Two are crested polish. They are so beautiful and sweet. I wish I knew how to trim their crests from around their eyes though. I'm scared to try that.
All my chickens come at each other sometimes and stand up in that "dare you" position momentarily. Is some of this behavior normal for chickens? I am wondering if sometimes it is when I come around and they are being competitive for attention or treats.

Hello we have a chicken that has been bullied she hides in her nesting box ,,when we get her out a few chickens were bulling her, then it changed and now different ones are doing the bulling. Poor girl. She is such a sweet girl. I don’t know what to for her.
I have four bantam Faverolls. My issue is I'm unsure if I have a bully problem. When one goes in the dust bath, the others need to go and help her by pecking off all the bits from her. This can cause feathers to be picked out, which is the main place. It's the top of their heads and necks. They are supposed to have lovely beards and cheek feathers, but mine have none. All been plucked out. Any suggestions would help.
I have a buff polish chick (which I thought was funny that that one was your problem child as well lol) that is a week old and I've been having problems with it since day 3. She like to peck butt fluff but not just peck and go on she likes to peck and grab ahold of the fluff till the other chick rips it's fluff out while screaming and running away from the bully chick. My brooder is plenty big enough them all and she's not picking on any certain 1 or certain color or type she's just getting who ever is closest to her at the time, almost every chick in my brooder has been tortured by her, 1 chick I didn't get to fast enough and her bottom ended up ripped open (which I had fixed and it has already healed) for now I have the bully separated and I keep trying daily while I'm around to add her back but she keeps doing it, what do you suggest I do? Do I just keep her separate for 2 weeks like you suggested for an adult chicken? Or maybe just separate her for a couple days then try again?
Ugh that's such a pain!! I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I would probably add some enrichment to their brooder like a clump of grass and dirt, maybe some greens for them to play around with, and/or a dust bath. You may also want to supplement a little protein like some hardboiled egg or mealworms. Another good idea is to use blue kote spray on any bald spots the others have proactively since she may try to attack new feather growth. If she's not improving from a few days separation, you could try longer and see what happens. I hope she grows out of it soon! If the weather is in the 60s you can take them outside for a little bit too, just as a way for her to not get bored.
@@chickenlady20 What kind of heat are you using? Curious because that can sometimes come into play. You could also try a drop of rescue remedy in their water daily.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia I'm using a big heat plate, so far there are no bald spots (except the one that is already healed and I dyed her bottom blue with food coloring mixed with neosporin no pain relief because that's what I had on hand at the time and her other fluff is covering it up pretty good now too). I'm new to chickens but my last batch of chicks were all so good no bullying or any problems really, and I use the same set up, I've got a big dog play pen and some small roosts that my husband and I made, I'll be adding some of the things you mentioned earlier in the morning. What's rescue remedy for? Vitamins?
@@chickenlady20 It's a flower remedy. It works like a homeopathic and is supposed to calm them down. I use it whenever I have stressed out chickens for whatever reason. I get the human-grade kind so I can take it too! LOL

Those flower remedies work! We used them to help curb the grief when my mom died. (For us, not the birds...lol) It calms you! I'll remember that for the birds. They do have such personalities! I have one that gets jealous easily. I said , "Look, your sister is finally laying!" and showed her the egg and she looked right at me and then pinched the skin on my arm. LoL.

Roos are a little different. Try these methods but also make sure you have enough hens for him. :-)
Just a couple of hours in, Chickie Jail, brought Lilac down some notches from pulling feathers. We left Chickie Jail in place closed up where they can see it.

Dahlia, what would you do if it's a rooster being the bully? It's Spring, it's mating season. But I also know, he has a difficult time eating. He has a very long waddle. When he bends to eat, that waddle gets in the way and he steps on it. So by the time he's gotten out from under himself, another hen has already taken his food. He'll eat a little from my hand, but the girls see that I'm feeding from the hand, and they come to and my rooster departs when he sees all the girls coming. I feel because he may not be eating as much, he's jumps each one of the 13 girls like three or four times a day. When the girls run from him, he chases them, he plucks their neck feathers or even their combs. I've tried feeding him alone, but then he won't eat if he's separated from his girls. What would you recommend?

Is he acting normal? If he’s running around and mating and acting normal then he’s likely getting enough food. Roosters will let the hens eat first, usually. His other behavior sounds like common rooster behavior. They can be pretty relentless! You might consider getting a few more hens. :)
Back in the 90’s I took a coarse in using Bach Flower Remedy in my medical based massage therapy office. I don’t have to tell you just how beneficial they were in many treatments. Pac-Man looks it's infuriated easily 😃 I too face same problem with my hens. They are friendly with each other in cage when their stomach is full. Or else, the big cage turns into a bullying zone. Lack of food actually makes them stressed which inturn makes them angry. The same case is with roosters.

I did the two separation methods but my bully just got angrier and started attacking once reintroduced. She even attacked me. She also ruined another flock mate who also started defeathering other birds. They seem to be doing well at another barn nearby. Finally convinced my hubs that we need more room because I don’t have space to give them much enrichment. Once we get more space, I will be back to six birds. The flock is much calmer without the two bullies.
Our bully was 2nd in the pecking order and really wanted to be 1st so she would be so rude to everyone especially new comers...we put her on a dog crate inside the run for a couple days with her own food and water...she came out knocked down a peg. 😅

I have given mine that, milk and water kefir grains and vinegar mothers. They eat them all. I have no problems with my chickens at all. They’re very happy!

Great video, I’m a little worried about my hen becoming more of a problem eventually but I believe when we integrate the new girls it will shuffle the pecking order and change it. Also Wren thinks your chickens look big and scary!

If they are really not getting along you might need to separate them again and wait until the younger ones get a little bit bigger. Then start the process of integration again.

I have a bully hen who was my favorite. She bullies everyone. She does not want to be a mother and brood on eggs. She even placed her own eggs under another hen who is raising them as her own. It is amazing the personalities chickens have. Who knew? !!

Aloha from Hawaii 🌺 I’m fairly new at raising chickens, so I’d like to get your opinion on something … I started with two chicks from a local pet shop, then decided I definitely wanted more of these sweet and amazing creatures, so two weeks later I got nine more chicks. The first two chicks have graduated from the brooder to the coup (they’re currently 8 weeks old) … which means the 9 chicks in the other brooder are 6 weeks old. Since it’s warmer here in Hawaii, and the 9 chicks in the brooder are already bored with limited space to move around, I was thinking about moving them outside to the coup earlier than 8 weeks … these nine chicks have been raised separately from the first two chicks that are two weeks older … how much more time should I give the 9 chicks that are two weeks younger, before moving them to the coup with the two chicks that are two weeks older ? I want to be sure I do this the best and safest way 😊 Thank-you for your kind reply, Darlene

I have a bantam that was the rule of the roost.. Now she's broody and is on the bottom of the pecking order.. The two she bullied is now bulling her.. Karma right... But I was wondering about separating them from the flock like you suggested... Maybe then my bantam will come out and chill... I don't want to get rid of any of them... But the bantam is my favorite.. And I don't want her stressed and hurt.... Thanks for the video..

Hi! I learn so much from you! Thanx! (greetings from The Netherlands!). I wonder, how did you release Pac Man after 2 days seperation. Did you put her at the flog at night? Or in the morning, freerange all together?
I have a lady who came to me with missing feathers. I didn’t think anything of it other than that she might be molting… the feathers have never grown back and I now realize that it is because my one chicken is literally eating her feathers and now another one’s as well.
There may be one other culprit as well but she’s not the worst.
I have a large rabbit cage that I’ve used to isolate in the past but I’m not sure if it’s enough room when a chicken isn’t injured?

I had a chicken that looked a lot like pac man and his name was Dailey because we thought he was a she so we had to get rid of of daisy it was really really sad because we couldn’t keep him where we live

I bought 4 chicks from a local guy. 3 of 4 ended up being roos and since I live in the city I had to get rid of them. So I kept one and got 2 more from the same guy. That integration was fine. Next day I got 3 more from a flock that has a severe pecking issue. I realized a few days in That they must be pecking at night in the coop. My problem is I think it is all 3 and the 3 I already had seem super docile. So I built a 2nd coop for night time. They free range in a medium sized city back yard all day and only get locked up at night to sleep. I'm hoping this helps put an end to it. I am also going to buy some anti pecking spray in hopes that helps too.
Do you trim the crest feathers on your polish hens? I'm new to chickens, made a small (6) mixed flock in my backyard. Two are crested polish. They are so beautiful and sweet. I wish I knew how to trim their crests from around their eyes though. I'm scared to try that.
All my chickens come at each other sometimes and stand up in that "dare you" position momentarily. Is some of this behavior normal for chickens? I am wondering if sometimes it is when I come around and they are being competitive for attention or treats.

Hello we have a chicken that has been bullied she hides in her nesting box ,,when we get her out a few chickens were bulling her, then it changed and now different ones are doing the bulling. Poor girl. She is such a sweet girl. I don’t know what to for her.
I would try to remove the main bully from the flock for a couple of weeks and see if that changes the dynamic.
I have four bantam Faverolls. My issue is I'm unsure if I have a bully problem. When one goes in the dust bath, the others need to go and help her by pecking off all the bits from her. This can cause feathers to be picked out, which is the main place. It's the top of their heads and necks. They are supposed to have lovely beards and cheek feathers, but mine have none. All been plucked out. Any suggestions would help.
My silkie went broody and one of my pullets is now bullying her. Is this a normal thing, and will it go away?
Yes it’s fairly normal, unfortunately. It should go away once the broody was wears off. :)

Do you mean pinless peepers? I think they should be a last resort and not left on for a long time. They seem to really struggle with them.

I have a buff polish chick (which I thought was funny that that one was your problem child as well lol) that is a week old and I've been having problems with it since day 3. She like to peck butt fluff but not just peck and go on she likes to peck and grab ahold of the fluff till the other chick rips it's fluff out while screaming and running away from the bully chick. My brooder is plenty big enough them all and she's not picking on any certain 1 or certain color or type she's just getting who ever is closest to her at the time, almost every chick in my brooder has been tortured by her, 1 chick I didn't get to fast enough and her bottom ended up ripped open (which I had fixed and it has already healed) for now I have the bully separated and I keep trying daily while I'm around to add her back but she keeps doing it, what do you suggest I do? Do I just keep her separate for 2 weeks like you suggested for an adult chicken? Or maybe just separate her for a couple days then try again?
Ugh that's such a pain!! I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I would probably add some enrichment to their brooder like a clump of grass and dirt, maybe some greens for them to play around with, and/or a dust bath. You may also want to supplement a little protein like some hardboiled egg or mealworms. Another good idea is to use blue kote spray on any bald spots the others have proactively since she may try to attack new feather growth. If she's not improving from a few days separation, you could try longer and see what happens. I hope she grows out of it soon! If the weather is in the 60s you can take them outside for a little bit too, just as a way for her to not get bored.

@@WelcometoChickenlandia I'm using a big heat plate, so far there are no bald spots (except the one that is already healed and I dyed her bottom blue with food coloring mixed with neosporin no pain relief because that's what I had on hand at the time and her other fluff is covering it up pretty good now too). I'm new to chickens but my last batch of chicks were all so good no bullying or any problems really, and I use the same set up, I've got a big dog play pen and some small roosts that my husband and I made, I'll be adding some of the things you mentioned earlier in the morning. What's rescue remedy for? Vitamins?
@@chickenlady20 It's a flower remedy. It works like a homeopathic and is supposed to calm them down. I use it whenever I have stressed out chickens for whatever reason. I get the human-grade kind so I can take it too! LOL
