Hey everyone! My hen had a very deep wound, you could see her spine and a fly laid eggs. I rinsed it thoroughly with saline and poured 50% DMSO solution on it twice a day for 5 days. The flies didn't land on it because they are afraid of the smell of DMSO and after 5 days the wound was completely healed and the hen returned to the flock healthy.

As a nurse I thought maggots only ate dead tissue. Clinically raised maggots have been used in in medical facilities for necrotic tissue debridement on humans (because they don't eat the live tissue). Little did I know there a different kinds of maggots and some eat live tissue...yikes! Your video gave me some science education. Thanks!

This happened to one of our chickens. I was horrified. I have never seen this. I bathed her in Epsom salt and vinegar water two times a day. The first day was so bad. I got as many maggots as I possibly could with the first bath. I continued four more days. Our chicken was able to heal. The vinegar seemed to kill the maggots quicker than the salt.

Fly strike is one of the most traumatic and terrible things I've ever seen. It's like something out of a horror movie and our babies never deserve to go through that. 😭 I will NEVER underestimate a poopy butt again, my god. I'm so glad your little guy's recovering!!! Sending love. 💗

Fly strike is so absolutely horrific! I was in shock when it happened to one of my Serama girls, I cleaned her up as best as I could, it is so traumatizing for all involved. She passed away, I was not able to save her. I have a white Splash Polish girl who from the time she was a baby her butt has always been dirty. I’ve taken to placing her in a big bowl of warm water each week or every few days to keep her clean
I’ve also noticed if I run a oscillating fan in their coop flies don’t gather
I’m am so happy Mr Robot made it!!!! ❤️💓💗💖

We lost 2 ducks in 2 weeks to fly strike this summer (and one turkey to ants). It's horrific, and I didn't know how to treat it better than flushing and "picking". But when there are just so many literally climbing out of the skin in MULTIPLE locations... it was more human for us to put them down. We don't have livestock or avian vets around us, so it's all on us. So traumatic Thank you for the advice. I'll be adding some of these things to my medicine chest.

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, my vet told me that it can get so bad so fast that the maggots will literally get under the skin and infest multiple places within the body. So awful! I’m sorry it happened to your ducks. ❤️

OMG I had to pause mid video and go check my chickies, make the fly spray I’ve been wanting to, and cuddle the Silkie Marshmello in my lap for awhile. I needed those cuddles for strength to finish watching and see Mr Robot. Yay a new robot fam, beep boop! Flystrike has been my worst fear since getting birds, and my husband doesn’t seem to care when I say flies are a big issue. EEK!

I lost my older hen recently to flystrike. It was horrifying to watch her death. She was elderly and already slowly going down hill, and had a poopy butt, which we had been bathing her for. But it hit so fast and her feathers were completely hiding the horror underneath. We tried to flush her, but it was too late. My first chicken loss.

I’ve treated fly strike many times, a lifetime of farming. Dettol disinfectant works a charm to kill them them then use an antiseptic or antibiotic if the damage is bad. Vaseline mixed with Sulphur powder in a stiff paste is a good dressing as it stays on and kills fungus too

Just lost our first chicken to fly strike. It was very traumatic. Fortunately the rest of our hens were ok. We washed all the rest, redid their coop with fresh wood chips and fresh chips on their immediate area. Made sure there was Apple cider vinegar in their water, and I think we got lucky with our remaining birds. Tough lesson to learn. Thanks for the info.😊

I use Zane oregano oil for infections and to boost immune system . 2 drops per gallon in the water. I also use thyme and oregano both in fresh herb and oil. I usually pour a drop in a spoon, spread it around the spoon and use it to mix quinoa (which my chickens love, specially when they are sick).
Homeopathy is used depending on the ailment. Works wonders very fast.

An absolute nightmare but I appreciate you sharing all of this so we all know what it's about and how to handle it if it comes up. I worked as a kennel helper at a vet as a teen and I still CLEARLY recall assisting the vet with cleaning maggots out of a cat's wounds. 30 years later, the horror of it is still ingrained in my brain. I earned a whopping $4.25 an hour at that job!

I had flystrike in my flock recently - my beloved Ebony Belgian Maline Mimi got it. I didn't know what it was and I had not seen it coming. It isone of the most horrific things I've ever experienced. I did my best bathing her and was lucky to get a Vet appt later that day. Her uterus and other organs were injured and unfortunately the doc had to euthanize her.

Colloidal silver idea as drinking water is great, only it should only be diluted in distilled water, as it will react with the minerals from the regular water and create compounds.
Oregano oil cannot be diluted straight in water, it should be diluted in oil or in the egg yolk, which is what I do.. However, you can use oregano herb in water.

I used blu kote and deep woods off . Because you do not want more. She had a blue rear end for a few days . Unfortunately she started laying eggs in her belly after . And developed more problems. I had to put her down . My grandkids antibiotics come in handy every now and then . Just cut the dose way way down .

Dalia, you are a saint for telling us about this. I have had birds all my life but never ran into this, thank goodness! I have ducks and a goose right now, no chickens. We've been having a very rainy year and trying to keep the run dry has been a challenge. I've been using a bug zapper but maybe need to add other methods as well.

I'm so glad you shared Mr. Robot's situation. I had a white leg horn who died a few days ago. I cried for a long time. She had ascites for many months. I drained her fluid using a sterile field (used to work as a medical laboratory technician assistant while in college). Initially, the ascites color was yellow. Towards the last 2 'treatments,' the fluid was greenish yellow. That was alarming. That greenish tint was bile. Her liver was failing. The last draw wasn't good, the fluid was murky green with red. I was very consider. Blood was appearing in her ascites. Within a few days, she passed 😢. Towards the end, I was drawing about 375 MLS. I loved that lady. I recently dreamt she will die. God was preparing me.

Oh ghod, that's what happened to little Jeri before I lost her. I had no idea how I missed it, and I felt horrible. She'd been sickly for months--in that time, she died three times and I nagged her back to life--so I was watching her closely and still missed it because I wasn't stressing her by picking her up. I washed the maggots off her butt and though I couldn't find a wound, I put Bag Balm on her. But she was already in the end stages from something the vet couldn't pinpoint. After her cremation, I found foil in her belly. That poor little bird... I'm absolutely giddy that Mr Robot made it through! Thanks so much for explaining fly strike.

I'm thinking an ozonated water would also be great to keep wounds from infections or to rinse. Anybody with pets, chickens, farm can benefit greatly from owning a colloidal silver and ozone generators. A small investment but can save lives.

Yes, ozonated water would be really good for this. I’ve been thinking of buying a generator but I worry I will mess things up somehow haha.

Oh my what a stressful thing to go through. I'm so glad he made it! I have one chicken Lil Fluff who has poopy butt. I've been giving her yogurt with monostat mixed and it seems to be helping. Now I'm going to be more diligent about this! I had no idea about fly strike. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate all you do

I didn’t even know about this one. Thank you. It’s been an extremely wet and humid summer where I live. I will keep a closer eye on them and be a little quicker at giving them baths when they have poop on their fluff.

FYI for anyone wanting to use “hot” oils like oregano, peppermint, cinnamon on animals… they do burn but they work very well- YOU MUST dilute!!! If putting in water YOU MUST have the oil absorb FIRST in baking soda or epsom salts before dissolving in water- if you don’t… the oil will sit on top of the water and be full strength (unless you literally put it in a water bottle and shake it really really well right before application)

Oh my goodness! How dramatic!😱So glad there was a happy ending.😊 What a wonderful friend you have to do all of that for Mr. Robot. Now I have to go and check all of my chickens so they're not poopy or wounded...
By the way, some advice from an Oregano-oil fanatic: Use it!😁 It's amazing for chickens. Haven't had a chicken with a cold since I started using it about 2-3 years ago. But, never ever put it straight in water. It won't mix with water and will burn the chicken that happens to drink it. For daily use, dilute in veg oil and mix in the feed. 5-8 drops in 1 tbsp veg oil is perfect for my 20 chickens😊 sorry for the rant!😅

Haha no need to be sorry! I agree Oregano oil can be caustic. One time I put some right on my tongue, straight! Oops!!!

Yay for Mr. Robot! Good info, our fly trap just arrived last week and just set it up two days ago with the fermented bait. So good to hear that the flies aren’t just an annoyance, but good to know we can potentially prevent this too. Thank you!
